Outlook 2013 connection status 'Exchange Directory' disconnected randomly for random users (Exchange 2013)

We have been encountering an issue where upon random Outlook 2013 users are unable to open the address book, or add a room to a meeting (using 'Add Rooms...' button), and an error message is displayed that the server is unavailable. Mail flow and
everything else functions normally.
If I look at the Outlook connection status of an affected user, I will see that all connections are established except for the 'Exchange Directory' connections which show disconnected. If I click the 'Reconnect' button the Exchange Directory connections
are re-established, and the user can now access the address book/meeting rooms as normal.
Are there any ideas what I would check, logs I could look at, events or anything I can check on the server side that might lead me to an answer what could cause this?

Outlook 2013 gets that data from Exchange 2013 by connecting to Exchange Web Services.  That's where you should look.

  • Exchange 2010 mailbox prompts for authentication to Exchange 2013 mailbox

I am in the process of a 2010 to 2013 migration. The only issue I can't seem to manage is an authentication issue with Outlook 2010. My Outlook profile consists of my Exchange 2013 mailbox and a shared mailbox on Exchange 2010. Initially, Outlook was prompting
for authentication to the Exchange 2010 mailbox. Regardless of whether I entered the correct credentials or simply cancelled the prompt, I still had full access to both mailboxes (including Public Folders on 2010). The authentication prompt was removed with
    the following command:
    Get-OutlookAnywhere -Server my2013exchserver | Set-OutlookAnywhere -InternalClientsRequireSsl $true
The second issue I now have is the reverse of the above: an Exchange 2010 user is prompted for authentication to an Exchange 2013 mailbox. How do I begin to troubleshoot this problem - should I run the same command (above) on 2010? I don't quite understand
how Outlook communicates with Exchange but I am thinking there is an incorrect setting on one of the Virtual Directories(?).
    Many thanks.

    Hi Dennis,
Please open Outlook - press CTRL key - right click on the Outlook icon from right bottom corner taskbar –Connection Status to check the connection for your Exchange 2010 mailbox with shared 2013 mailbox. The following example in my test results:
Please check your connection authentication. We can  run the following command to set your Outlook Anywhere for Exchange 2013:
Set-OutlookAnywhere -Identity "E15-01\Rpc (Default Web Site)" -InternalClientAuthenticationMethod Ntlm -ExternalClientAuthenticationMethod Basic -ExternalClientsRequireSsl $True -InternalClientsRequireSsl $true
In Outlook side, please ensure the following settings in Account Settings:
In Security tab, make sure Always prompt for logon credentials is unchecked and Logon network security is set to Negotiate Authentication.

  • Exchange OWA Page Blank For Random Users After Mailbox Moves

We have three Exchange server. msexch1, msexch2, msexch3. msexch1 is currently offline. msexch1 and msexch have the CAS and MBX roles installed and are in a DAG. We moved all mailboxes from msexch1 to the other two servers. Since then we have users reporting
that when they logon to owa they get a blank page. The resulting url is owa/auth.owa. The domain we use is exchange.ourdomain.com. The fqdn of each exchange server is msexch2.ourdomain.com, etc. We use round robin dns for our exchange servers, therefore we
have two entries for exchange.ourdomain.com. For the purposes of this question lets say the ip of msexch2.ourdomain.com is 10.10.10.52 and msexch3.ourdomain.com is 10.10.10.53 and we have two entries in our dns for exchange.ourdomain.com, one for 10.10.10.52
    and the other 10.10.10.53.
When a user experiences this issue I have found that when I ping exchange.ourdomain.com to determine which exchange server they are "connected" to; if I force them to use the other one they are then able to access owa just fine. For example, I
have a user whom is getting a blank page after they logon to owa. I ping exchange.ourdomain.com which returns 10.10.10.52 for an ip address, which tells me they are connected to msexch2.ourdomain.com. When I enter in the url https://msexch3.ourdomain.com/owa
to force them to logon using the other server, they are able to owa owa without any issues. When I use the url https://msexch2.ourdomain.com they receive a blank page after logon (as expected because this is the server they are trying to contact via dns exchange.ourdomain.com)
I have tried recreating both owa virtual directories which did nothing. I am at my wits end here and would greatly appreciate any assistance.

    Hi,
According to your description, I understand that OWA get blank after move mailbox to another mailbox server, and you deploy DNS round robin in your environment.
If I misunderstand you concern, please do not hesitate to let me know.
It may be caused by OWA proxy cannot work correctly, please try below steps to double check:
    1. Get a mailbox place in msexch3 and login OWA with
    https://msexch3.ourdomain.com/owa.
    2. Get other mailbox place in msexch2 and login OWA with
    https://msexch3.ourdomain.com/owa.
If the steps 2 cannot proxy URL to https://msexch2.ourdomain.com/owa, it may be the key reason.
Please clarify the environment of your Exchange:
    1. Which version are you used?
    2. Check the authentication of OWA: Get-OwaVirtualDirectory | FL Identity,*URL*,*Auth*
OWA is configured to use integrated windows authentication on each virtual directory, and the external URL under is blank.
Also, please run below command to double check the health of Outlook Web App service:
    Get-ServerHealth “msexch3” |?{$_.AlertValue –Eq “Unhealth”}
    Thanks

  • Exchange Indexing Not Working For Some Users

I know this is Exchange 2013 forum but I see that Exchange 2010 has been removed so I'm hoping someone can still help me out. We are planning to soon move to Exchange 2013 but in the meantime I've been having some indexing/search issues.
We have a particular mail database for one of our departments and after the database was moved to a new disk, the indexing has never been the same since. To remedy this, I had enabled the Windows search feature on the application server (we have Outlook
2013 hosted as a RemoteApp application with the use of user profile disks) and had them switch to cached mode which seems to be hit or miss. I also have tried following the recommended procedure of stopping the search indexer service on Exchange and then I
deleted the catalog data folder and then restarted the service to have it rebuild the indexes for the particular database. I have also confirmed through the management shell that the index is in a healthy state for the database.
I have now requested for the user that is testing to disabled cached mode to see if the indexes on the Exchange server will be better and I am awaiting feedback but I thought I would be preemptive and see what any suggestions you all may have with dealing
    with Outlook / search indexing.
Thank you in advance for your time!

    Hi Scott,
    Thank you for your question.
Are there any Event IDs in application log which is related to search? I suggest we post those Event IDs to
    [email protected] for our troubleshooting.
Did the issue occur on OWA?
Run the following command to check the database status:
    Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus -Server <servername>
We could dismount the specific database then mount the specific database, then rebuild the Indexing to check if the issue persist.
We could refer to the following link:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/mspfe/archive/2012/04/27/how-to-troubleshoot-issues-with-exchange-2010-search.aspx
If there are any questions regarding this issue, please be free to let me know.
    Best Regard,
    Jim

  • Outlook Anywhere proxy changed from Basic to NTLM for external users

I have a Exchange 2013 environment that is also running Exchange 2010 coexistence (migrating). What is happening is autodiscover is handing out NTLM for the proxy settings and not basic. However when it is using NTLM we seem to get the password prompt over
and over. If I manually changed it to Basic then it works fine, but when autodiscover goes again it changes back to NTLM and prompts that the Administrator made a change and you need to restart Outlook.
I checked Outlook Anywhere and all my servers have Basic set for external users and NTLM set for internal.

  • Acrobat 9 email and Exchange directory

When sending out PDFs for review throught Acrobat 9, acrobat is able to add individuals from the Exchange directory but not groups created in Exchange. For groups created in Outlook there is no problem, Acrobat opens the groups and allows all the individuals to be added but not for groups created in Exchange.  The client software is Acrobat 9 and Office 2007.

Sending email to groups through Acrobat 9's "send for shared review" feature doesn't work well with Exchange since Acrobat 9 doesn't recognize group names in Exchange directories but there is a work around for this problem.
Using the SMTP address does allow mail to be sent to Exchange groups, which means the end user has to open the properties on group in order to see the SMTP address.
There is no problem with distribution lists created in Outlook.

  • Outlook 2013 on terminal server Search failes for all users

we have a small comany with a new Windows 2012 Fileserver and Terminal Server.
Office 2013 is installed and we use Office 365 - Exchange Online as our mailserver.
We use Outlook with the Cached Exchange Mode ON. We have shared our mailboxes with our collegues.
Indexstatus is complete for all the users.
So far the information i have.
I suspect wrong permissions on the Windows Search Folders are the cause of my problems but where can i find the Windows Search Folders which are indexed (and shoot be accesable for the users).

Winnie, thank you for your answer.
    1. Make sure indexing is complete. ==> Index is complete
    2. Make sure Indexing Options are configured correctly ==> Indexing Options are configured correctly for the administrator, Outlook
isn't configured in de Indexing options for the users (that might be the problem i guess)
    3. Make sure Outlook data is included in indexing==>
Outlook Data is included in indexing
    See screenshots below:
First screenshot are the Indexing Options as configured for the users, the seconde one are the indexing options for the administrator. I suspect there is my problem, but can't find the solution the solve this for the users.

  • Excel Services Connectivity on Sharepoint 2013 for external user

Currently , external user is able to refresh the data on sharepoint site through browser. the data connection is pointing the one of the external data source. But how can an external user (Internet user which accessing sharepoint through internet) download
a copy of excel in sharepoint library and open the excel workbook with data refresh ability at client machine ?
Do we need client machine to be able to access / ping the external data source?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the response.
They want to perform data analysis and design their own report with own template , for example : to remove subtotal from the powerpivot tables which we cannot change the formatting at the excel services at browser level.
So if i understand correctly, we need to get the client machine to be able to access to the database server directly to get the access to the cube for data analysis although we had this odc file connection setup, am i right?
For internal user, network team should open port / access for them to access database server directly.
For external user, either to open public access to the database server directly or setup a VPN connection for the external user to access the database server in their secure network.
Let me know if i understand this correctly.
    Thanks.

I migrated my exchange 2010 to 2013, then move several mailbox to 2013 mailboxdatabase.
Mail flow works fine, just I noticed that outlook 2013 client got this connection status issue only.
outlook 2010 is totally fine. Any idea?

    Hi,
Does the issue happen to all users in Exchange 2013? I noticed that this issue only happens to Outlook 2013 users. Please verify whether the issue happens to all Outlook 2013 users but not Outlook 2010 users.
Please click Send/Receive > Send/Receive Groups > Download Address Book, then check whether there is any error logs if it is failed. In Outlook Connection Status, please click Reconnect to have a try.

  • First timeout, push retry and then succesfull connect?! Starting Outlook 2010 connect to Exchange 2013

    Hi!
    Some info:
    2x AD/DC Windows 2003 Native.
Previous Exchange 2003 installed, but now cleanly as it gets uninstalled.
    Exchange 2013CU2v2 Aka Version 15.0 (Build 712.24)
Office 2010 with Outlook 2010 (Latest SP, and WU)
Outlook-prf configured for Outlook Anywhere. (i've also tried to configure manually, no difference)
Exchange: SAN Cert. GUI requested from ECP. This one covers all possible host names the server can use. autodiscover, owa, mail, "netbios"-name. Self issued from the internal CA. CA distributed to clients with GPO. I get NO certificate warnings
    surfing to OWA, ECP.
Exchange: ECP/Server/Outlook Anywhere; Auth set to NTLM (not Negotiate)
Ping inside host names resolves to the Exchange server.
Starting Outlook.exe with /rpcdiag show two connections for a while. One of the type catalog and one of the type redirect.
    Problem:
When starting Outlook you see "Loading profile" for about 30-40 seconds. /rpcdiag show two connections CID "9","11"; SERVERNAME "---","[GUID]@thedomain", AUTH and ENCRYPT is empty.
The the a dialog comes up that says that the server isn't available?!
Clicking "Retry" makes Outlook connect as it should. Everything from there works like a charm! /rpcdiag windows show that it has connection as it should.
Tried to click "Reconnect" in /rpcdiag. It also takes about 30 sec before it regains the conneciton. The part hanging there is the Type: Redirect.
So, does anyone have a clue for why it doesn't work and then does?
Can it be something wrong with the autodiscover?

    Hello,
Do you mean the issue occurs when you select manually configure outlook exchange account or automatically configure outlook exchange account? If so, please make sure whether all users have the issue.
I recommend you check if there exists redirection on your rpc virtual directory.
I recommend you use "test e-mail autoconfiguration" tool to check if your autodiscover is correct.
Besides, I recommend you to enable global and advanced logging for outlook to check RPC trace events.
