Output to firewire = distorted audio

the subject says it all.
If I play the timeline out my computer, everything is fine.
If I play out to the firewire port, the audio is massively distorted and after a few seconds the video stops playing.
I play into my DSR-20 deck and my VX-2000 camera and get the same results. This happened out of the blue, don't you just hate that.
I reinstalled FCP 4.5 and still get the same results.
I hope this is NOT 10.4.2 related.
still......I have to get this project out of the computer.

don't know the answer directly but basic troubleshooting process would be:
Has this ever worked?
If yes, have you changed any settings on the deck since the last time you did this or changed any software since the last time you successfully worked with the equipement?
If yes, then start with that.
If no, does it work with other projects? Does it not work only with this one?
It might be QT7 related. Since you can't control the audio in the firewire stream directly, there has to be something happening in the way it is being sent out or the way it is being processed at the other end. Since QT is the underlying engine for all of this a/v shiftyness, it could be a funky installation.
good luck.

My T400 has poor visual quality in pictures and videos one week ago.  After I updated the graphic driver, the images of the pics and videos are ok now, but the laptop is giving out distorting audio output on my videos. Can someone help me out with this issue?

    Solved!

I updated my audio driver and bought another headphone and solved the problem.  I don't don't know why my previous headphone doesn't work for t400--it works perfect for my desktop.

  • Heavily distorted audio over firewire seemingly triggered by FW Drives

I have a Focusrite Saffire Pro 20i/o firewire 400 audio interface which worked fine for a while but for the last few months I have been occasionally getting distorted audio. The distortion starts gradually and over a period of a few minutes seems to increase until the original sound is barely recognisable. It sounds a lot like the BitCrusher plugin in Logic.
It usually seems to be caused by the presence of a firewire hard drive and is triggered when I start doing any kind of processor-intensive task (or perhaps hard drive intensive task), such as exporting a quicktime movie or rendering a sequence in Final Cut.
I imagined this was a problem with the Focusrite itself but I've found that my friend who has a MOTU 828mkII firewire interface has exactly the same problem at times though not as often. He too only started experiencing it a few months ago.
I told Focusrite and they suggested I shouldn't use a FW drive on the same buss - but I used to do this without a problem. Even when the interface is in the 400 socket and the drive is in the 800 socket is seems to happen. Are they sharing a buss?
The Focusrite is a class-complieant device and relies on the OSX firewire audio driver rather than a third-party one, but the MOTU has its own drivers. I'm using the latest Apple FWAudio driver that focusrite distributes with their driver downloads.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Did something change in some OSX update to cause this?

You're right, I wouldn't do anything intensive while recording.
But usually this happens when simply playing a song in iTunes and then I copy a big file or export a video whilst iTunes is running and the audio gradually deteriorates, and the only way to get it back to normal is to turn the Saffire off and back on again. And it does only seem to happen when a firewire drive is attached, and probably when I'm writing to or reading from that firewire drive.

  • Play out to firewire massive audio distorition

    the subject says it all.
when I play the timeline out the comupter speakers, everything is OK.
when I play thru the firewire port so I can see the video on and NTSC monitor or so I can make a DVCam or VHS print, I get MASSIVE AUDIO DISTORTION.
    Never had this one before.
I have head that itunes for widows comes with a worm the effects audio and video of PC's. Could the boneheads (for lack of another word) have made a strain that effects Mac now too.
Itunes v6 upgrade and the addition of a Lecitech USB mic are the only possible variables in the equation.
what could be causing the massive audio distortion thru the Firewire port.
    thanks.

Do you have another way to monitor the audio thats being sent thru the FW output other than the way you are now? Maybe it's the external monitoring that's pumping up the audio somehow? Also check that the master output levels in the audio mixer are not causing this too...

  • Mac Pro and FireWire M-Audio 1814

Can some one please HELP ME configure my Mac System with my Fire Wire?
all I need help with is hooking up the Speakers to the fire wire then the fire wire to the Mac so I can get the sound Out.
    many thanks in advance..

Dear Mr. Zarzowski, I'll do what I can. first try going to m-audio.com and under 'support' type in the model # of your thing...ah, I see. the M-audio has ts/trs connectors which use headphone style plugs (the big ones) so, depending on what connector your speakers have, you'd need a speaker connector to 1/4 inch adapter
as for the fireWire, you'd have to go into audio, then input/output, select the FireWire unit, then maybe output over Firewire. Also go into midi setup and make sure that's setup correctly, ie the output and input should be FireWire and not line in/line out. I presume the unit comes with software, ie a FireWire control panel? You might want to install that, too

  • Desktop Pavilion Elite m9250f distorted audio when playing a dvd

I have a 64-bit operating system: Vista Service Pack 2 (two).  The monitor is an HP w2207h HDMI with internal speakers.
When I play a dvd with audio going to the monitor speakers, I get this nasty repeating rumbling noise that has both a low-pitched and a high-pitched component to it; absolutely no intelligible audio (music, dialog, etc.) comes through, and the video displays fine.  However, when I play the dvd using headphones, there's no problem with the audio whatsoever.  There are no other problems related to audio coming through the monitor.  I control whether the audio goes to the headphones by using the "Realtek HD Audio Manager" found in the Control Panel; when I choose "Speakers," the audio goes to the headphones; when I choose "HDMI Output," it goes to the monitor's internal speakers.
Any assistance with this vexing problem would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

    Hello @Jeff77xx,
I understand that your HP w2207h monitor has distorted audio. I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
Step 6. Try different cables between your computer and monitor.
If the above steps did not resolve your issue you can try the monitor on a computer or other device to see if the issue persists. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. • Simultaneous import of video via firewire and audio via in-line audio port

I have a converter that takes the S-video and audio input from my DVR then converts both to DV format, and then outputs via firewire. I hook the firewire up to my G5, open iMovieHD, and the application recognizes that as a camera and imports wonderfully.
Well, the audio comes through with a MAJOR buzz or hum. It's probably the converter, but the buzz/hum is not enjoyable.
So, I removed the audio from the converter, and the video converts wonderfully in iMovie without the audio. I have the audio coming in through my audio line-in.
I start to import my video, and iMovie starts recording the video. But I want to record the line-in audio at the same time. But when I switch to audio to turn on the input from the line-in, the video stops capturing.
When I start to capture audio first, then switch to capture video, then the audio stops capturing.
Is there any way that I can capture the video via firewire for one "track", and my line-in audio for the other "track", and have them play simultaneously in iMovie during capture??
Any help would be appreciated. thanks Adam

    hey there badkitty 42,
i don't think you can do that. it sounds like your issue is electrical. try turning the plug around on each piece of gear in the chain & listen for the buzz. if it's not heard you've found the cause of your ground loop. you can also pick up some of the 3-prong orange or grey electrical adapters from Lowe's or Home Depot to see if you can "lift the ground" to get rid of the buzz. i'd try one on the convertor 1st. one last thing, do you have any flourescent lights in use on the same circuit or in proximity to where you're doing your transcoding? these are notorious for inducing 60Hz hum in audio & video gear.
    good luck.

  • Fixing Distorted Audio

    Hello,
I am working on a project for which I received the source media digitized into a firewire drive. Once I imported that media into FCP, I discovered that the audio in one of my interview subjects' footage clipped at certain points, making some of his words sound distorted - I am unsure if the audio was originally recorded as such by the sound tech, or whether it was captured at an incorrect setting by the person who digitized the media. Bottom line is, the audio on one of my interviews *****, I have no access to the master tapes (reshooting is not an option), and I would like to be able to salvage some of the soundbites in question.
I am aware that it's near impossible to get rid of distortion once it's been recorded or digitized - does anyone know of a certain combination of FCP filters which would, at the very least, help me minimize the distorted audio?
    Thanks in advance.

If the clips were captured as DV clips via firewire, then the person who captured is in the clear. The fault in that case would be the shooter's.
You might take one of the clips into Soundtrack Pro and look closely at the waveform to see if you can pin down the distorted parts. There's not much you can do about it, but you can at least confirm with your eyeballs that it's there and therefore unfixable. OTOH, if you see clean waveforms there, then . . . no I won't get your hopes up - it's not fixable.

  • Recording a bands live set has distorted audio

Previously I have recorded many bands live set (small hardcore bands, all legal, don't worry) using the Camera app on my iPhone 4, 4S, and 5. Always got very high quality recordings thanks to the automatic gain control (I think?). Now with the iPhone 5S and iOS7 I get very distorted audio. Not sure if it's the software or hardware change. Sadly I do not have my old iDevices to test them again, but a lot of my old videos are on youtube. Any thoughts or solutions?

    1. What is the maximum number of tracks that can be recorded at one time in Garageband?
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/GBFAQ.html#maxnumrecordabletracks
(Let the page FULLY load. The link to your answer is at the top of your screen)
I read somewhere that Garageband can only record 8 live tracks{...} Is this true?
yes, however that 8 tracks is 16 channels, explained briefly here:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/TricksHacks.html
    and 1 MIDI track simultaneously.
    correct, there is no workaround
    2. Optimally I would like to have 10-12 real recordings
doable if the interface supports it, and you're up for the extra work in post
    and 2 MIDI
    not doable with GB.
    3. I plan to record to a 1 TB external USB drive so that I don't run out of disk space. Would GB play nice with recording to an external drive over USB?
to record that many tracks, you want FireWire, not USB.
    4. If no, should I record each song, save it, then copy it over to the external? or record the entire set in one recording?
trusting an entire performance to a single recording is not a good idea no matter what you use. saving each song would be wise no matter what.

  • Distorted audio during playback

has anyone else had the problem of distorted audio in itunes. when i play a song on itunes, it's totally distorted, as if the output level of is too loud. even when i turn down the volume fader, the audio is still distorted. i play the same tracks through quicktime and they're fine, so it's definately an itunes issue.
    can anyone help?
    thanks
    simon

    Hey Simon,
I've had this issue since iTunes went to version 7. I believe it may be tied to the original DRM scheme Apple used and is using. I don't know about you, but I have no issues with iTunes Plus purchases and if I rip my own CDs. Otherwise, all of the non iTunes Plus downloads distort. If I'm correct, you may see this thread vanish in the near future. I think this is potentially a huge issue when you consider a billion downloads, or however many Apple is up to now.

  • Mac Mini has Distorted audio over HDMI

My brand new mid-2010 Mac Mini has distorted audio over HDMI. Ideas? Tried multiple connections, devices, but the Mini's audio flattens and distorts high pitch sounds. Really distracting, makes movie watching impossible. Thinking about returning it.

Update: After a bunch of playing around, it appears that I do, in fact, have audio output. What is missing are the up and down volume chirps. I can do without that.
Now, anyone know how to fix the Logitec webcam's input volume...?

  • Z97M Gaming distorted audio.

I just finished building my system yesterday around a Z97M Gaming mobo, and from both the front and rear 3.5mm ports I've been getting heavily distorted audio. HDMI output from the GPU is totally fine -- it's just the 3.5mm from the motherboard itself.
I have uninstalled and installed the latest drivers from Realtek, reinstalled Windows 8.1 64-bit twice, and disabled various functions individually, such as the Ethernet port and wireless adapter. BIOS is up to date.
There are two sound devices, one High Definition Audio Device (Speakers) and one Realtek High Definition Audio. Disabling the former does not allow for any sound at all. Disabling the latter still results in garbled, distorted audio.
The problem appears to be related to, if not identical to, these two topics:

    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=250923.msg1442404#msg1442404
None of these problems were answered, though.
    My specifications are as follows:
    Intel Core i5-4690K
    MSI Z97M Gaming
    Asus Strix GTX 970 OC
    GSkill RipjawsX 8GB DDR3-1600
    Crucial MX100 512GB SSD
    SuperFlower Leadex 750W
Any help would be much appreciated!

    Hi Nichrome,
Thanks for the quick response. I can definitely pinpoint that it's not an issue with the speakers -- neither headphones nor (two different kinds of) speakers work in the front or back ports.
HDMI audio works perfectly from the GPU, but HDMI directly into the motherboard doesn't even detect that it's plugged in -- won't even give me the option of choosing HDMI audio output, and just says "not plugged in". I suspect that this might be a separate driver issue entirely, or maybe the entire onboard audio is faulty.
I haven't had the time to test if the motherboard is faulty, but I'll return with results.

  • How to use airplay speakers in multi-output device without crackling audio?

    Hi,
I would like to mirror the audio output from my mac mini to the built-in output and an airplay speaker.
Therefore I added a Multi-Output Device containing  the Built-in- and Airplay output, as soon as I activate the airplay speaker the sound is mirrored but unfortunately always with a crackling sound coming of the speakers set as "slave Device"... only the Device set as "Master Device" has clear sound, doesn't matter if it's the airplay speaker or the speaker (or headphone) directly connected to the built-in output.
I've tested this with a mac mini and an mac book air as audio source, same problem. Both were running Mac OS V. 10.9.2.
Does anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong?
    Greets
    Chris

I'm using a 2011 Macbook Pro running Mavericks and current Apple TV (MD199HK/A 3rd generation) when trying to output audio to both Apple TV and built-in output simultaneously I suffer crackling and popping. I have this issue once I use Audio MIDI Setup (under utilities) to create a Multi-Output Devise. Once I use this multi-output devise made up of Apple TV and Built-In Output to get my music to both output devises at once BUT I get crackling sound on either Spotify or iTunes.
I've worked around this issue by using AirParrot. I select Apple TV in AirParrot with Audio enabled. The Apple TV then takes all audio output, then I select the 'Multi-Output Devise created in 'Audio MIDI Setup' and I have playback through Apple TV and Built-In Output without any crackling or popping.
Only minor outstanding issue is that whatever scenario I then run Audio Midi Setup in terms of setting various devises as Master Clock and resampling of sub devise I can't perfect the sync between Apple TV audio output and my local Macbook Pro, but close enough with the slightest hint of echo. Plenty of forums discussing Word Clock sync which is out of my league. Un-ticking drift correction on the 'AirParrot' audio output has them close enough, depends on how easily you can hear your apple TV output from the room where your Macbook Pro is and vice versa.

  • Is there a way to link up my firewire 400 Audio I/O into USB3 or Thunderbolt?

    Hi all,
I'm currently struggling trying to link my Firewire 400 Audio Interface to my new imac.
There seems to have no easy way to link it up to either USB2/3 or Thunderbolt.?
    Cheers

It would require both a > Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.) and a Amazon.com: elago FireWire 400 to 800 Adapter for Mac: Electronics
I don't have an Audio Interface to test, but sucessfully use the above connection with a couple of old Maxtor FireWire 400 HD Enclousures.

  • Output via firewire with studio 2

I have recently set up a FCP Studio 2 system with a kona LHe card and am having a hard time outputing to dvd. We are using an HD player deck (JH-3) and our analog outputs from the kona are component only. DVD players only take s-video and composite. I need to find a way to go firewire out into my dvd player. There is no option for this in the video playback... I know people doing this on studio 1 but i cant seem to find any way of outputting via firewire in studio2.. any suggestions???
    Helpme604

Thanks for the reply. Yes Im trying to go to a dvd recorder for dailies output. In avid i have s-video and analog out of the mojo but I only have component out as an analog option from our Kona card. In our studio 2 for some reason we dont have an option to go firewire out. Could this be from a poorly installed FCP? In the video playback options we dont have any firewire options.
    thanks again
