Override default RSS / Atom Feed

Hi,
I have a created a base page for my app which inherits from the foundation/components/page. I want to customize the rss feed, so I have created the feed.jsp within the base page component of my app.
When I access the link http://localhost:4502/content/<app>/page.feed.rss.xml, the feed is rendered based on the OOB feed.jsp and not from the custom feed.jsp. What is going wrong here? Am I missing any configuration?
Also, is the feed & rss registed keywords? If so, where is it configured. Also instead of feed, I would like to use page.rss.xml or any other custom name, so how should it be configured? I tried creating a jsp (say hello.jsp) taking the code from feed.jsp, and when I access the url (page.hello.rss.xml) it does not get rendered. So what could be going wrong here.
Thanks,
Chetanya

If you are requesting /page.feed.rss.xml - shouldn't you create a feed.rss.xml.jsp instead of simply a feed.jsp?

I am new to dreamweaver and have undertaken the cd training, however I am unable to find information on how to add an rss feed reader to my site and which extension is most appropriate. I would really appreciate if someone could advise me how i go about adding the feed reader to my site so I can show content generated by Feeds from other websites. I would also appreciate any advice on which reader is most compatible with CS5
I went to the Adobe Exchange for Dreamweaver and search on "rss" and got 14 hits:

  • How do I get thumbnails of images embedded into our RSS/Atom feed

We have an RSS feed enabled on our CQ5 blog at http://www.wsidesignermarketplace.com/content/designer/Design_Blog/_jcr_content.feed?type= rss2 which we want to pull into a content widget.  This feed does not have images/thumbnails enabled.
Can someone walk me through how we can enable thumbnails from the blog into the RSS feed?

Do you have a back up of the iPhoto library from before the crash?

  • Why isn't Firefox rendering RSS or Atom feeds?

Firefox used to style RSS/Atom feeds when they were accessed directly by URL, and if not, would at least display the raw XML source. But for many versions now, maybe since the RSS icon was removed, visiting any feed will only show a subscribe now button with a pulldown list of helper apps, but zero content, as if the feed was empty. However, viewing source for the page shows the XML. And this isn't an issue of a bad feed, since I ran several of them through the W3C validator and they passed. I also experience this issue with a clean profile and no addons. Is there any way of showing feed content again, preferably styled?

''There is still an RSS feed icon available, but it is in the Customize palette and you need to drag it on a toolbar yourself.''
The icon is not an issue. It is the feed content that doesn't work for me.
''Are there any errors in the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer)?''
YES! This is what it shows when run on every feed I try in safe mode:
    TypeError: this._feedWriter is null subscribe.js:21
Use of Mutation Events is deprecated. Use MutationObserver instead. menulist.xml:240
    uncaught exception: out of memory
    TypeError: this._feedWriter is null subscribe.js:17
''What does the page inspector show if you right-click the space where the feed content should be?''
An empty element. This is the entire content from the inspector: http://pastebin.com/f0hkn9VD
''Is there a feedBody DIV and a feedContent DIV?''
    Yes, see paste above.
''What is the setting for Web Feed in Firefox > Preferences > Applications''
    The default "preview in firefox".

  • What's the difference between RSS and Atom feeds?

I just figured out the RSS thing, which is great. However, when I go to sign up for a RSS feed, I am often given a choice between RSS, Atom, sometimes different versions of RSS. What's the difference between all these? (I tried searching, but was unsuccessful.) How do I make a choice?
Another question, can someone see that I have signed up for RSS feed from their site?

    Hi again,
but how do people decide which one to use for subscribing?
People can choose whichever one they want - Safari supports both RSS and Atom, other applications on OS X (and Microsoft Windows, Linux, etc) may only work with RSS or Atom so by publishing in multiple formats they can be fairly sure that everyone can read the content.
And how can you see who has subscribed to an RSS feed from your site?
They will be able to see the IP address of the requester in just the same way as they can when you load a webpage - there's no difference in how the RSS/Atom data is requested sent over the internet compared to HTML webpages.

  • "We had difficulty reading this feed. null" Atom feeds no longer work?

Hi - our Audioboo feeds used to work fine when submitting as a podcast (eg http://audioboo.fm/users/4705/boos.atom). It seems like they stopped working recently - maybe in the past couple of days - and just report "We had difficulty reading this feed. null" when you try to submit them.
I'm beginning to suspect that the use of atom rather than rss is the cause. Can anyone confirm?
    -Jonathan

This feed can be subscribed to manually in iTunes (from the 'Advanced' menu) - actually I'm rather surprised it works because it isn't a valid podcast feed (though it is a valid Atom feed).
It has the iTunes 'declaration' and some itunes tags, although the former is contained in a 'feed' tag whereas it should be a 'rss' tag: there is no 'channel' tag enclosing the podcast data, no 'item' tags enclosing each episode, and no 'enclosure' tags within each episode containing the media URL. I'm not surprised you can't submit it as a podcast, and as I say it's a but surprising that the iTunes application recognizes it.
In order to get it accepted in the iTunes Store you need to create a feed in the correct format: this page contains a sample basic feed so you can see how it should look:
    http://www.wilmut.org.uk/pc
If the feed contains the valid iTunes format it can also contain atom tags, which iTunes will ignore.

  • Displaying Release Date from Atom Feed

When using an atom feed with iTunesU, we find that the Release Date field does not show meaningful data. The field contains the value of today in every
instance. I wonder if there is any way to make Release Date show the contents of the <updated/> element, or to otherwise modify the feed to enable use of the Release Date field?
    The feed is here:
    http://www.cs.washington.edu/events/colloqvidcast.xml
    Thanks, Fred

I can attempt to offer just a bit of assistance; however, I don't and haven't used Atom for feeds, so my experience is limited to RSS only.
The Release Date field in the iTunes U Store and iTunes application rely on the pubDate tag in the iTunes xml namespace.
For details, please see the following link:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/podcaststechspecs.html#rss
The page explicitly mentions RSS, but does not explicitly say that ATOM will not work, so YMMV.
Hope this gives you a starting point.

  • ITunesU cannot update atom feed

Hi: Running Podcast Producer 2 in a Snow Leopard machine, and the Podcast Library is stored on the same computer. Without any changes, we are getting the bellow messages for all of ours atom feeds on iTunesU.
Is anyone else experiencing the same problems.
I can access the Podcast Producer library from a public computer and all content is there. For whatever reason, iTunesU don't seem to be able to update.
    Thanks,
Dear iTunes U administrator, instructor, or course manager,
Your 'CLASS OF 2014 FALL SEMESTER 2010' course in your umich.edu iTunes U site populates its track list automatically from an Atom feed, based on the podcast Atom feed URL and details you specified. iTunes U encountered the following error while trying to access the podcast Atom feed:
iTunes U could not update the content because iTunes U could not download the specified feed (http://servername.x.x.x.x:8171/podcastproducer/atomfeeds/730B3E46-7282-4E53-A349-8897412A9535). Until the issue is resolved, iTunes U continues to display the last downloadable version of the content. Verify that the feed specified in the feed URL field and the resource are available, and then try again.
To check your iTunes U podcast Atom feed URL and details, Atom Feed Settings located at Michigan > Schools and Colleges > Dental School > Dental Students > Class of 2014 > CLASS OF 2014 FALL SEMESTER 2010.
    Sincerely,
    The iTunes U Team

We're getting this message as well, but it's from an RSS feed, not an atom feed. See below.
As far as I know, this happens when iTunes U tries to refresh a feed, but encounters a timeout getting the new RSS/Atom XML document.
I'd love to know if we can suppress these notices, if they are just a notification. Our faculty get these emails because we add their email when we register their RSS feed in iTunes U.
    Anyone have any ideas?
Dear iTunes U administrator, instructor, or course manager,
Your 'Swahili - Journals' course in your indiana-public iTunes U site populates its 'Feed' group track list automatically from an RSS feed, based on the podcast RSS feed URL and details you specified. iTunes U encountered the following error while trying to access the podcast RSS feed:

Until the issue is resolved, iTunes U continues to display the last downloadable version of the content. Verify that the feed specified in the feed URL field and the resource are available, and then try again.

  • Flickr Atom Feed Problem

IF I pull in the RSS 2 Feed, from the latest uploads eg:
    http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne?id=98234668@N00&lang=en-us&format=r ss_200
I can work with it well, and do whatever I want.
IF I pull in a set feed (which is apparently Atom 1.0) eg:
    http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/photoset.gne?set=72157606748972492&nsid=98234668@N00& lang=en-us
I get nothing usable in Dreamweaver 8.
I have pulled every single item from the feed into the
dreamweaver page, and nothing. Not even a space or paragraph jump
to indicate it tried to pull something, but couldn't.
Now - if I change the photo set code to reflect that is an
RSS 2 feed (ie. add - &format=rss_200) to the end of the line
where it connects to the source, I get the same information as I do
when pulling the "latest" feed, and can work with it no problem. No
problem while previewing the XSL fragment anyhow. Once I call that
fragment from an ASP page, it gives me this error:
    MM_XSLTransform error:
"flickrgalleryfeed.xsl" is not a valid XSLT document.
Reference to undeclared namespace prefix: 'media'.
I have tried to declare media using a declaration from the
page that works - to no avail. It just wont parse.
How can I hack the page so that it thinks it is parsing RSS2?
Is this a dreamweaver problem, an IIS 5 problem, or what? Please
help. What is being checked, and by what, to tell my browser (FLock
2 and IE6) that there is a problem???
Remember - the XSL fragment page previews correctly on it's
own. Once it is called by the ASP page it has a problem and
    generates the error.
I have viewed the feed directly with Flock and other feed
readers, so I know that there is valid data there, I just can't get
    it to display.

    had the same problem have found the following;
Uploading to Photostream - permissions ok
Uploading to a new set via iPhoto - permissions ok
Uploading into a current Flickr Set (even with current photos in set permission as only you) - permissions of uploaded photo not respected and set to public

  • Set Default RSS Reader in Mountain Lion???

So now that Mail & Safari dont have default RSS readers support, how does one change what was previously set?  Somehow the program "Socialite" has been set as my default RSS Feed reader.  I do NOT want to use this program for RSS feeds but cannot seem to find a way to change the default association.

Use whatever RSS reader you prefer from the very many that currently exist. Find them at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads . You can also find them on the Mac App Store. A good one is NetNewsWire 3.3.2. It's also free.

  • How Web Dynpro supports RSS (ATOM)?

Let's image to generate our feed (RSS/ATOM) via java classes or xslt; now how is it possibile to expose it to the end-user?
From the development point of view it is similar to expose other Web Dynpro UI and it would be nice to use the same "prospective" and project also for this kind of comunication method...

    Valery, thanks for the replay.
I agree with you: "nothing of special about RSS/ATOM and
No problem also building the XML object".
    Let me try again:
    - user contacts the url of the WD application
    - the system should response just with the RSS xml data and not with UI objects (tableView, textEdit, ...)
But the WD does not allow you "to send out raw XML" even "send out raw HTML".
It allows "only" to build nice UI via objects it knows.
When you say "construct contex value nodes" do you mean that you are able to replay with the raw XML data?
Are you really able to response to a browser as the following url https://forums.sdn.sap.com/rss/rssmessages.jsp?threadID=75910
does? (It is the feed of this post)

  • Default RSS reader option

What does the preference in both Safari > Prefs > RSS > Default RSS reader and Mail > Prefs > RSS > Default RSS reader do?
Until now I've been doing all my RSS in Safari, which is OK but not stellar.
Now that Mail supports RSS in 10.5, I'm experimenting with it there. But as far as I can tell, RSS feeds that are subscribed to in either app seem to get updated in either app. So what does the "default RSS feed" do?

    Hi
When you open (expand) an RSS feed in either Safari or Mail, either Safari will go to the actual page (if set as the default), or a specific RSS Reader will open.

  • How to set default RSS reader...

    Hi,
how do I set an alternative default rss reader in ML ? I've NetNewsWire installed but when I select a feed:// bookmark in Safari it still goes to the default mailer (Thunderbird) in my case. How can I make NetNewsWire the detault reader?
    Cheers, Fons.

I found and used http://www.rubicode.com/Software/Bundles.html#RCDefaultApp to set NetNewsWire as the default RSS reader. All fine now.
    Cheers, Fons.

is there a way to make Feedly.com my default RSS reader? I tried using shrook, but it wasn't a good replacement since it doesn't save the list of RSS feeds i feed it.

    Hi
When you open (expand) an RSS feed in either Safari or Mail, either Safari will go to the actual page (if set as the default), or a specific RSS Reader will open.

  • Example iTunes U Atom feed?

    Hi
We’re making arrangements to set up an iTunesU store for our university. We're also building a sql database which will publish our media content through to our CMS and build the web feeds. So I need to ensure the web feeds are compliant with iTunes U.
I understand that iTunesU will accept rss and atom feeds but that atom is the preferred format because it affords the publisher the option of specifying multiple media types in a single feed item. i.e. in an atom feed you could specify multiple mp3's or an mp3, mp4, m4v etc in a single feed item. Is that correct?
Also, can you point me to examples of well formed iTunes U atom and rss feeds? Perhaps you have some example feeds on the Apple website?
    Thanks

As always, standard disclaimers apply, I defer to Duncan for an official reply.
I would not say that RSS is preferred to Atom necessarily. Rather, the basic consideration for the iTunes U admin is what each of those feeds "maps" to within iTunes U. In iTunes U, an RSS feed can be made to map to a group (that is, a tab within a course). An Atom feed, on the other hand, maps to a whole course and creates groups (tabs) as required by the feed. Often, within a course, you create tabs to match media types ("Video", "Audio", "PDF", etc.). But in principle, and so far as I know, the course-to-Atom feed mapping can be anything that is logical…that "makes sense"…for your site.
In effect, Atom gives the iTunes U admin a very simple way to automate the creation of a course and link it to a single (Atom) feed. In the past, an admin would first have to create the course, then tabs, then link each tab to a separate RSS feed.
