P35 Neo2 not booting with Crucial Ballistix PC8500 (2.2volts)

This is a psuedo overclocking issue, a mod can move it if need be.
So I got MSI's P35 Neo2 board and I'm frustrated with their whole package.  I install everything and get into Windows and was naive enough to consider running MSI's Live Update, which nuked all possibilities of me getting this to the person I was building it for before Christmas.  If this post seems too wishy-washy, that's why.
The problem is in the RAM I'm attempting to use.  Crucial's Ballistix DDR2 1066 http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=BL2KIT12864AA1065 wants to be run at 2.2 volts, and before updating the BIOS through live update it worked without a hitch.  Now after I ran the update, it gives me errors.
By the way, how in high hell can MSI put out motherboards without documenting them properly?  I spent hours trying to find out how to either change the voltage in the BIOS or do the same in Windows through the Dual Core utility.  The latter ran, but never actually changed the voltage.  And the BIOS - there's nothing in the manual or official online pages that tell you how to change the damn voltage!  It was only after I searched through enough forums that a user suggested using Page Up-Page Down.  Worked like a charm, but wow, if the manual or BIOS had said as much it would have saved me so much time. 
So I do have the BIOS selected at 2.2 volts now, everything else set to auto.  I save and reboot, but no luck.  After three restarts the board tells me in very broken english that my attempted "overclock" has failed with settings reset to default.  I get into the BIOS to find that the voltage is still at 2.2 (which makes sense, otherwise the system wouldn't boot at all, correct?) with all the other settings as they were before.
Question time:
1) The first BIOS revision worked with my RAM perfectly it seemed.  Is there a way to "roll back" without busting out a floppy?
2) Why isn't the system booting?  I know this is a RAM issue because if I break out a slower stick of DDR2 4200 that runs at the more "normal" 1.8 volts, it can get into Windows just fine.  This is how I attempted to set the voltage using MSI's Dual Core utility to no avail.
I've heard good things about MSI motherboards, but these snags I've run into discourage me from using MSI in the future.  Running a board's memory or CPU at higher voltages isn't rocket science, in fact so many memory vendors do it right out of the gate it's incredible you have to do the memory hot swap at all.
Any help would be appreciated.

OK, I've reflashed the BIOS back to v1.0 and now I'm able to boot once again with my Ballistix memory.  Thank God for forum moderators and USB flash tools. 
I might play with the BIOS further - I took a quick look at the revision changes and none really referenced changes in overclocking or RAM compatibility.  As I already explained, I won't be able to get this machine to whom it's intended for until after Christmas so at this point I'm in no hurry as the problem is most definitely a BIOS issue.
Also, after examining my voltages confirmed by CPUz after reloading the v1.0 BIOS, the board correctly detected my memory's stock voltage at 2.2v, which is good to know and lines up with what I've experienced beforehand.
Hopefully they can fix this in a future BIOS revision, but since my Q6600 and RAM appears to be detected correctly at the moment I may never bother.
If anyone needs or wants me to look into this further or to reupdate the BIOS one at a time for documentation/research, let me know, otherwise consider this case closed.

    according to the Apple specs for the 1.83GHz mbp's - 2Gig of memory is the limit......
    512MB (single SODIMM) of PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 memory on 1.83GHz configuration; and 1GB (single SODIMM) on 2.0GHz configuration; two SODIMM slots support up to 2GB
    Crucial Memory says the same.

    The specs, on the web site say that the  max memory supported is 3GB DDR2 because the notebook was built with the OS Vista(32 bit) installed so that’s why the manual has the 3 GB max. memory supported limit. The 32 bit OS can’t address memory over 3.12 GB.   To my mind that is not a spec. but rather a tech. writer who made a mistake and copied the sales literature.  With Windows 7(64 bit) Pro. installed the OS can address up to192GB of memory if the system supports it.  Other Compaq and HP Notebooks can deal with 8GB of memory installed. That’s why I would think HP’s could easily fix this with a patch or use one of their other BIOS’s. 
    The difference between 4GB and 6GB is that with 6GB system runs faster and the display quality has improved.  I have set the cache size to large and the executive paging is set to off in the registry. The menu(System Properties - Performance Options – Advanced – Virtual Memory) is set to automatically manage the paging file size.

    What lead_org is referring to is commonly known as "re-balling" which involves unsoldering the Southbridge chip from the planar, replacing all (6-700) solder balls with new ones and then re-attaching it under heat/pressure.

    K9AGM3-F motherboard does not boot with PCIe 4x Intel PRO/1000 PT dual port network interface card installed into PCIe 16x slot on motherboard. The boot process stops in BIOS screens. The motherboard works flawlessly without this NIC. K9VGM-V + Intel PRO/1000 PT boot successfully. I tried three K9AGM3-F motherboards and two Intel PRO/1000 PT NICs in different combinations, the results are always the same. It appears to be some kind of BIOS problem.

    The PSU is irrelevant too because the same NICs work in the PCIe 1x slot of the same motherboard with the same PSU.

  • T60 does not boot with Intel T7600G CPU

    I replaced my Intel Core Duo T2400 with Intel Core 2 Duo T7600G CPU in ThinkPad T60(1951-CTO) laptop. However, laptop does not boot with Intel Core 2 Duo T7600G CPU. It doesn't even complete the POST: https://db.tt/8UL8FlE0 As seen in the video, I plugged in the power adapter at 0:02 and pressed the power button at 0:06. One can hear a little click made by optical device. If I press the power button again at 0:16, this click does not happen. BIOS version is 2.27. I have reset the BIOS settings by disconnecting the CMOS battery, but this didn't help. Once I replace the T7600G with my old T2400 then I'm able to boot the laptop.
    Any ideas what might cause such behavior? Shouldn't there be beep codes in case of CPU issues? What else to try?

  • HP G62 Will Not Boot With Power Cord Plugged In

    I have an HP G62 laptop that is about four years old. I've had a couple of problems with it before that were resolved relatively satisfactorily, however five or six months ago I started having a new issue. The laptop will not boot with the charging cord plugged in, whether there is a battery in it or not. Nor will it return from sleep mode (screen black, status light on the power button flashing) with the charging cord plugged in, whether there is a battery in it or not. It simply shuts down and I end up with an error screen the next time I boot up. I have tried other charging cords and it has been the same, however the cord will still charge the battery. This means I have to charge the battery, unplug the cord, boot up the computer. This annoyance is worsened by the fact that the battery  is old and unable to  hold charge for very long at all and I fear one day even the battery won't be enough to boot the computer.Can I fix the power cord issue? Should I buy a new battery? Or let my computer give up the ghost and scrounge for a new one? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    i got a bunch of 2960X switches. But some of them do not boot with the new IOS Version. The older 15.0-2 EX do boot.
    Does anybody have a clue why this happens? During the Bootprocess it just stops to load:

    On the ones that cannot boot 15.2(2)E, can you break the boot cycle using the "Mode" button?
    If the answer is "yes", then try the following: 
    1.  Copy the IOS BIN file from a working switch to a USB flash drive; 
    2.  In ROMmon, force the switch to boot the IOS from your USB flash drive; 
    3.  If it does not work, try a different IOS, like the EX3 for instance.  Try the same process, boot the BIN from your USB flash drive. 
    4.  If it works, try a different IOS, like EX3, for instance.  Downgrade the IOS from 15.2(2)E to EX3 and see if the switch can boot normally. 
    This exercise will determine where the fault is coming from:  IOS bug or a hardware batch problem.  
    To determine if you'e got a hardware batch problem, you may need to look at the serial number of the switches working and not working.  From left to right, look at the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th numerals.  This will determine the year and month your appliances were made.

    I had a problem with my M93p SFF relating to an older external USB drive from Seagate, and an apparent incompatibility with management of the drive across soft reboots.  I opened a support ticket and got superb results from Lenovo engineering over the next few months.  I sent them the drive to have (as I had no use for it, replacing it with a new Verbatim USB drive which was fully 100% compatible with the machine and saw none of the problems I saw with the Seagate drive).
    The eventual outcome was a public fix in a new version of the BIOS to handle the unique characteristics of the Seagate drive.
    So, have you actually opened a ticket with Lenovo? They need to have something official to start from when new problems are discovered.  The M93 machines are "new", so issues of compatibility is not a surprise to me.  Especially when UEFI, GPT, large drives >2GB, and Windows 8 are concerned.
    [I'm still staying with Win7 Pro x64 for now.]

    Okey so I bought this rig last friday(will post specs later). 4x 1gb ram sticks, shows up as 3.3gb. Was gona install 64-bit Vista today, but got some problems.
    I left my computer on during night just to check if it runs fine. I wake up around 6am, turn power on to my monitor. Screensaver, move mouse, desktop and BOOM: Bluescreen(something about memory). Ok so I shutdown my comp, try to reboot got no signal. Removed 2 ram sticks(A2,B2) and yey it works. I plug them back in and again nothing. I test them 1 by 1 on both of the free slots, no problems detected.
    Why won't my P35 Neo boot with 4 gigs of ram? And why did it work for 2days? :P
    My guess is that the bios is still not ready yet(using 1.2v).
    Specs: OCZ 700W GameXStream, P35 Neo-FI, C2D E6750, 4X PQI 1024Mb DDR800Mhz, Leadtek 8800 Gtx

    Yes, I could install Vista and XP just fine. Also at first I could boot them with 4gigs just fine. Now my system won't POST with 4 gigs.
    I've tested each one of the ram sticks and they are error free.

    A have a problem with my Neo2-FIR. But first my system's specs:
    MSI P35 Neo2-FIR (PCB 1.2, BIOS 1.9 or 1.A - the first one supporting my CPU. I don't remember and there's no video, so I can't check it)
    Intel E8400 E0 stepping (SLB9J) cooled by Thermalright Ultima-90.
    2x2GB DDR2 A-Data 800MHz 4-4-4-12 2T
    PowerColor HD4850 PCS+ (512 MB)
    Enermax Pro82+ 385 W (Click for more)
    WD AACS 640 GB (irrelevant)
    It has been working well since fall 2008. Suddenly, I turn on the PC to see "No input signal" on my monitor..
    Diagnostic LEDs report GRRR (from top to bottom), which translates into "Initializing video interface. This will start detecting CPU clock , checking type of video onboard. Then detect and initialize the video adapter". No signals form the speaker.
    The full sequence after an restart is GRRR (for a split second) -> RRGR (Mem. detection test) -> RRGG (Decompressing BIOS image to RAM) -> RGGR (Processor initialization) -> GRRR.
    After hardware changes (like different RAM configuration - in this case detecting RAM), it can freeze on some other stage. But an restart helps, and clearing CMOS before start up prevents this. Normally it's the above sequence.
    What I've tried:
    - Tested all the voltages with an Voltmeter. They're fine. The PSU was always rock solid.
    - Detached everything that's not crucial (HDD, DVD, fans etc)
    - Checked all the connectors.
    - Cleared the CMOS (with the button, by removing the battery etc.). It worked, because the dual boot issue was reintroduced.
    - Booting with the video card in the second (yellow) PCI-e slot.
    - Booting with an old, PCI videocard. (Same symptoms as with the new one). I've also tried booting without and video card - it was the same, but there was an beep from the speaker.
    - Booting with one RAM stick, in various configurations.
    - Reseating the CPU (it looks fine, so does the socket BTW).
    - Reseating the motherboard in the case (to make sure there are no shorts). No shorts on Ultima's backplate.
    - probably some other stuff that I don't remember
    - (edit) various FSB jumper configurations.
    Of course the video card was checked on an different PC and it works fine. I can't check the CPU, but it's rather unlikely that it is its fault.
    What I haven't tried is an blind BIOS update. A bit risky. Is it worth trying?
    Any ideas? I probably have to RMA the board, but maybe someone knows the answer or had an similar problem.
    I've also had some problems with CRC errors with the HDD. Windows reported problems with writing on it (don't remember the error codes). It was moths ago and replacing the SATA connector and changing the port helped.
    There were some (rare!) BSoDs, mostly caused by Realtek drivers. RAM was tested with Memtest86+, it was fine. Anyway nothing special and most probably nothing related to the current problem.

    They've actually sent me the P35 Platinum Combo mainboard. It the same as normal Platinum, but supports both DDR 2 and DDR3. I don't mind really, though I also don't need it It does have a slightly different PCB and a different BIOS (at least it has it's own number, everything else looks the same).
    I have a problem though with the BIOS. It's impossible to set the proper CPU voltage. On Neo2-FIR the minimal voltage was equal to CPU VID (1.1 V). There were some problems with EIST (when it was enabled, the minimal voltage was higher - 1.25 V I think. I've just disabled it).
    On this mainboard, with exactly the same CPU, I'm unable to set the voltage below 1.25 V and the CPU overheats  It works, but gets really hot. EIST was disabled on default. Rather annoying, this is supposed to be a quite build, which won't be possible with an overvolted CPU
    The BIOS is the newest version, but I'll double check.
    I'll probably create a topic about this issue after some more research and testing (when I'll find time for it ). Though I'm afraid it's a bug that cannot be resolved. Apart from that everything looks fine.

  • MSI P35 Neo2-FR booting error

    Hello all.
    The problem I'm having is concerning a MSI P35 Neo2-FR.  For about the past year, this mainboard has been used in a Windows Home Server Setup.  Not to long ago, we had a power outage (Yes, should have been plugged up to a UPS, Mea Culpa).  When the power came back, (and I got home), it couldn't get it to boot.  It was doing the old MSI False boot routine that has become infamous. While checking the cables inside, I hit the CMOS reset button while the power was on.  Now, I'm not sure how completely screwed I am, but at this point I'm stalled as far as booting at the "initializing keyboard" status light indicator.  (Two red followed by a green, then another red, from top to bottom on the LED status light strip). It just hangs there forever. I can't get to a bios screen.
    Is there anyway to salvage this?
    Oh, and I have an Identical system (different videocard, but same MB, Ram and CPU that went through it, to no ill effects.)
    Before it's asked, I have fiddled with the memory (swapped slots, used one stick etc), I have tried booting it with no RAM, no Keyboard, a PS2 Keyboard and a USB Keyboard.  All to no avail.

    hoho resetting the BIOS while the system is still on is a big sin..I have done the same mistake as u are and to settle this..there's a thing called RMA,u might want to try that

    I'm another unlucky MSI P35 NEO2 FIR user whose mainboard does not boot. My config is as follows -
    mainboard: MSI P35 NEO2 FIR
    cpu: E6750
    ram: OCZ Platinum Rev.2 800 2x1G
    gfx card: MSI 8600GT
    psu: Corsair VXEU450W
    In the beginning it worked flawlessly for about 4 months. Then the boot problems started to appear. After turning on, the mainboard status leds configuration was red-red-green-red, the system kept rebooting and I had to wait several minutes before successful boot occured. (The whole procedure involved additional amount of hassle for me because I had to open the case and disconnect the harddisk during the "warm-up" time.) Gradually the time before successful boot increased. At one time I was not able to boot for several hours. Then I changed FSB jumpers configuration, moved memory to different slots, reseted BIOS and I don't even remember what I tried before eventually miraculously booting the system. After this accident I had to wait 0.5-1.5h for successful boot. In the meantime I upgraded BIOS to v1.8. Nothing changed. This lasted few weeks, and now the big problem reoccured. Initially, the behaviour after turning on slightly changed. Instead of red-red-green-red leds, I got 4 reds. The big additional disadvantage of this was that the system was not rebooting automatically after a few seconds. I had to manually turn it off then turn on again and repeat it until I got red-red-green-red leds, after which automatic reboots started. It's been getting worse and worse since then and now the situation is that I haven't been able to boot the system for a few days. Each of those days I tried for several hours without success (still trying while writing this post).
    The one thing I haven't tried is using the 667 memory, I read that it might help. But even if 667 memory will help, does it solve the problem once and for all, or it's possible that the problem will reoccur later (note that my mainboard worked fine for 4 months)?
    Also, do you have any other suggestions?

    I believe RAM is ok, because when my system worked I ran Orthos a few times for several hours in "blend" mode and no errors occured. Unfortunately I can't easily get 800 or 667 modules.

    I recently bought 4x 2GB sticks of Crucial DDR2 memory.  I originally had Windows 7 x86 installed, and with all four sticks in place there was no problem (except the memory limit for x86).  All 8GB of memory registered fine though. 
    I decided to install the x64 version, but setup would hang at every step and installation took over 12 hours - Windows 7 would not boot either when it was complete.  I removed all but one of the 2GB sticks and everything installed fine and it's up and running now.  If I put the rest of the sticks back in, Windows begins to load but gets stuck at a black screen.  I've swapped each 2GB stick in my system and they all work as long as only one is inserted at a time. 
    MSI P6N Platinum SLI (v1.7 BIOS)
    Windows 7 x64 Ultimate
    Intel Core 2 Quad @2.4GHz
    4x 2Gb Crucial DDR2 @ 800 MHz
    NVidia GeForce 8800 GTS 640Mb
    I've done some google searching, and it seems like other people are having the exact same problem with the P6N boards, but I've never seen any solution...

    The memorycontroller on that board is an oldie, got one myself  and it will probably not run @800MHz with all slots occupied on a x64 OS.
    That contoller is only rated for 667MHz when running all channells fully occupied.
    The fact that you could run it so under x86 has probably to do with the fact it didnt adress all the memory, but only 3.25GB max and thus it was stable enough.
    Now you are running an OS that uses all memory and thus it can become unstable while its running at a too high speed for the controller.
    I had the same and could "only" get the memory to work @750MHz tops, before it decided to BSOD or bootloop on me.
    This is inherent to its design (from NVidia, they made the chipset) and cannot be overcome, but dont worrie yourself, the speeddifference between 667MHz and 800MHz is negligible and will only show up if you run benches, in normal day to day use, you will hardly, if ever, notice it.
    But, do you really need 8GB???
    If you do gaming, internet, office and other "light" work, i.e. normal homeusage, 4GB is already more then enough.
    8GB is nice if you use cad/cam, photoshop and other memory intensive stuff.

    I am not sure if it will fit.  In any case, as far as I know the CNPS77000 Cu only has a 3-Pin FAN-Connector.  The problem here is that the P35 Neo2-FIR (and all recent MSI Boards) have a 4-Pin CPU Fan Header.  If you want to take advantage of the automatic CPU FAN regulation feature of the board, you need a CPU Cooler that has a 4-Pin FAN Connector.
