I am uploading the latest BETA BIOS Release for the P965 Platinum: A7238IMS.193 [=v1.9b3]
Changelog [A7238IMS.180 -> A7238IMS.193]:
- the POST could show 4096MB when installing 4GB memory, but BIOS System Information only displayed 3328MB
memory size.
-fix installing 1TB hard disk, when configuring sata mode as IDE, the bios shows 1000GB, but post shows 100GB. the bios and post both show only 100GB in AHCI mode

Hi all,
I have run with the above hardware specification since Jan 2007 without experiencing any hardware problems at all. Two weeks ago I upgraded the CPU from an E6700 dual-core to a Q9550 quad. I was a little concerned about doing this, because the P965 supports a max FSB of 1066 and the Q9550 is rated at 1333. In any case, I Googled around and found that some flavours of the Q9550 had been tested on my mobo (http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-MSI/P965_Platinum_(MS-238).html) and also MSI list the Q9550 stepping C1 as being compatible so I took the leap.
Early indications were good - Vista detected the new chip and I rebooted when prompted. However, in the space of two weeks I have experienced around one or two BSODs per day STOP 101 or 124 codes. Hmm!
I have switched back to my trusty E6700 chip and the system is then as solid as a rock. I see 3 possibilities here:
1.The Mobo website (MSI P965) lists the Q9550 stepping type C1 as being compatible. There is no mention of E0 or C0 which seem to be the other two variants. I have no idea which stepping type mine is as the product numbers for the Q9550 chips are all the same (EU80569PJ073N or BX80569Q9550) regardless of whether it is a C0, C1 or E0 stepping. Is there any way to tell which on I have - I tried with CPU-Z but didn't spot the stepping type? In any case, could this be the problem or am I off-base?
2. It's possible I have a faulty chip. How likely is this do you think? I could ask for a swap with Novatech but could be back in the same boat, and they will reject the return unless it is 'proven faulty'.
3. I need to mod the clocking on my rig to support the Q9550. If so, can anyone advise on what I should do?
I doubt the problem is caused by an OS factor as I ran some tested in an XP pre-boot environmet and still got the lock-ups.
What should I do? i don't really want to ebay the chip at say a £50 loss if i can help it.

No, the OEM Order Code is different, and the sSpec Number also.

P965 Platinum and E6600 won't go to 3GHz

Hello,
I have a MSI P965 Platinum and a E6600. Currently I have two sticks of Corsair Value Select 1GB PC-5300 RAM, rated at 667Mhz 5-5-5-15.
The E6600's stock is 2.4GHz, and I want to go to 3GHz. This should be dead simple - not only can the E6600 usually clock much higher, but 3GHz will only require a 333Mhz FSB (9 x 333), which means my RAM doesn't have to be overclocked at all since it is rated for 667MHz DDR2. I should be able to obtain 3GHz with a nice comfortable 1:1 FSB:RAM ratio without stressing the Corsair Value ram beyond specifications.
However, it just won't work. I seem to be having RAM instabilities at 667MHz 5-5-5-15 and 333Mhz FSB. The reason I say RAM is because Memtest86 freezes, and SuperPi has a 'not exact in round' error in 16M and 32M - which apparently means there is a problem with memory stability. Now, I know this sounds like the RAM is faulty, but I don't think it is, because when I run stock 266MHz FSB, the system is fine at 4:5 divider to make the RAM 667Mhz. It's only when I increase the FSB (and not the RAM at all) does the system become unstable. At 266MHz FSB and 667MHz RAM, my system will pass any stress test, but not at 333Mhz FSB and 667Mhz RAM.
I've upped the CPU voltage 3 notches to around 1.350 or so under load. My ram is at 1.9v, although I tried 1.95v too. I didn't touch the chipset voltage (should I?). My temperatures seem ok - I'm only using the stock Intel cooler, but it should be able to handle 3GHz fine. It hovers around 48c idle, 60c load according to Everest Ultimate (before it crashes in SuperPi), so it doesn't appear to be overheating while overclocked. Not great tempts but acceptable.
However, there are two things I've noticed:
- In the BIOS, if I select CAS to be 5 or 6, CPUZ still reports my ram at CAS3 (which my RAM can't do at 667Mhz), or 3-5-5-15. However if I select CAS4, it reports CAS4 properly (still unstable though), or 4-5-5-15. This is only a problem when I overclock the FSB - at stock FSB, the CAS timings are reported correctly. It could be an issue with CPUZ, but I doubt it. If there is a bug with the P965 Platinum not setting the CAS right when overclocking, this might explain why I'm having RAM stability issues even though I'm not overclocking the RAM - i.e. because the board is not using the right CAS setting. Is this a known bug? Also, I tried Auto SPD but it tried to use 4-4-4-12 at 667MHz (again, which this RAM won't do).
- When I run 333Mhz FSB and 667MHz RAM, the POST shows some sort of error message about the board not supporting CPU's with a 267Mhz FSB or something (which is weird, because 266Mhz is the stock speed *shrug*), and that it's resetting it. Sorry I can't recall the exact error off hand, but I can try the overclock again and provide it later on if needed. Anyway, despite the error message, the overclock still applies - it will boot into Vista 64-bit at 3Ghz, it just won't pass any stress test.
Is it possible a BIOS update could help me? I run V1.4, and even though I know there is a V1.8 now, no newer version mentions anything about fixing overclocking issues. I don't like to update my BIOS unless necessary (and I don't even have a floppy drive anyway, would need to figure out how to do it via USB).
Thanks for any help. I'm certain my RAM isn't faulty and I'm certain my CPU should be able to reach 3Ghz surely. I'm also pretty sure heat isn't an issue. I think maybe the board is trying to force CAS3 when FSB overclocking or something? That's my guess anyway.

Sorry, I should have mentioned I was definitely achieving 1:1 - I recall the confusion over why my RAM was trying to be 800+MHz at 667 and then I realized 533 actually meant 1:1, 667 4:5 etc, so I am definitely running at 533/1:1. I doubt this RAM would even post at 800+ MHz.
So updating the BIOS may help? Ok thanks, I guess I will update then. I don't see it in the "fix" list though on the site. Is there a way I can get a *full* fix/enhancement list for 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 and 1.8 so I know exactly what I'm fixing going from 1.4 to 1.8?
Also, does MSI support LiveUpdate BIOS in Windows Vista 64 yet? And if not, is there an official way to update via a USB stick? (no FDD here).

MSI P965 Platinum, system won't boot only when ICH8R is in RAID

So I couldn't get my system to boot properly when I have the ICH8R in RAID 1 mode.
I have the boot drive on a single, non-raid Wester Digital 250gb Cavair HD on the ICH8R.
Installed XP Pro SP2 with the ICH8R in IDE mode. I installed in IDE mode beceause I was unable to install XP on my single drive when ICH8R was in RAID mode. I installed XP in IDE mode, did all driver updates, then put the ICH8R into RAID 1 mode for my other data drives and the system will post, start to boot and get to the Windows XP boot screen then the system just restarts before the boot completes. It does it in normal boot mode and safe mode as well.
With the ICH8R in IDE mode everything boots/runs fine.
The problem is, I need the 6 SATA RAID controllers on the ICH8R as I have 3 RAID1 arrays.
I've done all the updates to windows, motherboard bios, Highpoint RocketRaid bios update, tried every mode on the ICH8R, unplugged the Highpoint Rocket Raid, left it plugged in with no drives plugged in, disabled the Jmicron controller, everything I can think of.
Any help would be appreciated.
I did not do the windows floppy driver install for the ICH8R when I installed XP, but I have not had to do that in the past with the ICH7 on my old motherboard so I assumed I wouldn't here as I've been told it's just if you are installing windows on a RAID.

The problem that you are having has nothing to do with your mainboard.
Once you decide to install Windows XP SP2 when the ICH8R controller is in IDE mode, Windows will give you a bluescreen once you switch to RAID mode after the installation is done because it is to stupid to change to the proper driver. Consider this as normal behaviour.
You have basically three possibilities:
1. Reinstall XP with integrated SP2 and integrate the Intel ICH8R RAID drivers using a floppy disk
The latest drivers can be found here.
As I understand, you have already tried that. I if you don't feel like trying this again, have a look at this:
2. Slipstream Intel ICH8R SATA RAID drivers using NLITE or XP ISO BUILDER and try to install again with a self-made install CD that already includes the proper drivers (no floppy needed)
Use google to find one of the tools I mentioned. The procedure is free, perfectly legal and easy to do. Guides for this can be found all over the internet
3. Switching to RAID mode without having to re-install Windows XP
If you are still using your existing installation, that was done when the controller was in IDE mode, the follwing trick may work for you.
I posted a little guide on how to switch from IDE to AHCI mode without having to re-install XP. Have a look at the guide. The procedure is essentially the same for RAID. The only difference is the content of the REG-File that you have to make.

The procedure works perfectly well in most cases (but not always).
I hope one of these three "methods" will work for you.

Windows XP-Pro will not install on my new P965 Platinum

I hope someone can help me with my problem.
It seems that everytime i try to install Windows XP-Pro after the initial
drivers setup i get this Error Message:

This is a new build with a Samsung Spinpoint SP2504C SATAII Drive but
when this occurred i thought that it might be the drive that was the
problem.So i therefore put it i my Old PC and tried to install Windows
XP-Pro onto it which i did with no problems at all.
I then put the drive back in my New PC where it Booted Up First Time and
runs OK and i have even installed Software onto it.In fact i am using at
this very minute as i type.
Unfortunately when i still try to Reinstall Windows XP-Pro on my New Build
with my P965 i get the same Error Message as above.

Your Windows Installation CD should be as up to date as possible, especially for newer hardware. SP1 is from 2002, SP2 was released in 2004. Neither SP1 nor SP2 install CDs provide the proper drivers for the JMicron chipset used on your mainboard. I cannot give a detailed list about the differences between SP1 and SP2. I just know, that there are a lot of problems when people do not use SP2 on Intel 975/965 Chipset-boards which where released in 2006.
When you say that your installation works fine on your old PC I believe you. It worked on my old Laptop too. However I was not able to install XP Pro on my 975X-board without SP2 at all until I upgraded my Installation CD.

I don't know anything about the JMicron and the need for SP2. But, as you can see from my sig, I'm using XP Pro SP1, and once I moved my NEC 3500 back to the mobo IDE (as secondary behind my IDE hard disk) everything worked like a champ.

To relate Garfields problem with your solution is a mistake. Your board does not use any JMicron hardware, has NVidia chipset instead of Intel and an AMD CPU. Your are talking about a totally different Setup here.

P965 Platinum, Vista, and Raid

I spent a good couple of hours skimming the boards yesterday trying to set up my two new 320 SATAII hard drives in a RAID array. I ran into a ton of trouble, but then finally figured out part/all of my problem and got things working. I figure this information will be helpful for anyone who is trying to do the same. I'll post the most useful links I found at the end of this post as well...
heres what i'm working with:

promise technology ultra ata 133 tx2 (the source of a ton of trouble)
originally i had vista ultimate x64 installed on a 36.7 gb raptor that was performing ok (once i did the extremetech suggested reghacks for lowdiskspace and 8.3ntfsfilenames), but not as well as my friends new computer with a blazing fast 500 gb stripe.
my bios was configured as such:
on board raid controller: ide
on chip ata devices -> sata 1 config: enhanced
...configure sata 1 as: ide
...sata 2 configuration: enabled
i shut down the computer, and changed
on chip ata devices -> configure sata 1 as: raid
then i was able to get into the raid setup with Ctrl + I, and set up my array. Here's where I ran into my first problem. I figured I wanted a raid 0 because I don't care soooo much about my data being lost, and i have never had a hard drive die on me (knock on wood) in the past 8 years (guardian angel). So setting up my array was working fine, except for i hadn't anticipated that i would have to choose an ideal strip size. The board suggests 128k, but after much deliberation I decided since I wanted the speed benefit for my OS and programs, I wanted 32k strip size; but having a 640 stripe for just the OS and programs seems huge, so out of curiosity I tried setting up two raid arrays (both across the same drives). The first was a 100gb raid 0 with a 32k strip size and the second was a 496.2 raid 0 with a 128k strip size. This worked fine, but then I got to thinking... can I set up the 100 gb array as a mirror? If so, then I get the best of both worlds since I can secure all my OS/settings/programs/documents, but I'll have a super fast (respectively) 400 gb drive for ephemeral memory and expendable data (replaceable stuff like ripped dvds, downloaded music and programs, downloaded anything...). This would all be at the expense of 100 gb which certainly seems worth it at this case because I wouldn't have to worry about the possibility of losing all my data like everyone seems to cry about all over the internet when talking about raid stripes. So i set it up, this worked fine... next step boot into vist ultimate and start installation.
Here proved my most annoying step, as my first problem occurred when I couldn't find the dvd/cd drive in the boot sequence menu. I saw the usb card reader drives, my raid arrays, and my raptor... but no dvd/cd drive (of which I had two connected). After scouring the web about that darned Jmicron chip, it appeared as if the bios cannot see the PATA drives on this board and I would have to try pressing F8 at the jmicron bios screen. THIS IS COMPLETE MISINFORMATION.
As stupid as it is, the real problem is that the boot sequence only displays 6 (i think it's 6) bootable media, and if you have anything else it just doesn't show it. This gave me the impression that the bios was unaware of my cd/dvd drives connected to the IDE controller. As soon as I unplugged my card reader, the dvd/cd drives appeared in the boot sequence... thank gawd because...
i had tried plugging my dvd/cd drives into the promise ata controller (which i already know lacks a vista 64bit compatible driver), which actually allowed me to boot into the vista setup whereupon I was asked (I did NOT have to press F6, even though everyone seems to think they have to) to install the driver for the dvd/cd controller (I assumed and was right that it was asking for the promise ata controller driver). I put the most recent drivers from their website on a usb stick, plugged it in, and the driver worked and then setup was able to see my dvd/cd drives (which is weird because how did I get to that point if it couldn't?).
Then setup said it couldn't find any drives, so I figured the problem was with the driver for the ICH8R intel raid controller. I downloaded drivers from MSI's website, intel's, and a bunch of others, and NONE of them worked. Setup would install the drivers, but it still could not see any hard drives attached to it. I'm not sure what caused this problem, but my best guess is that it had to do with the promise card being plugged in.
I gave up on that and figured I'd try something else, maybe the promise card was causing the problem. So I tried changing the ports that all my sata drives are plugged into. The two new 320's were on 0 and 2, and I also had a drive on 3 4 and 5. I read somewhere that intel had some array issues on 0 1 and 2, so I tried setting my 320's on 4 and 5 and moved my other drives around it. This is also when I had the idea to remove my card reader and pull out the ultra ata 133 tx2 card.
I was able then to see the dvd/cdrom in the boot sequence, put it first, and boot into vista setup. VISTA ULTIMATE DID NOT ASK ME FOR ANY DRIVERS AT THIS POINT. I'm not sure if it was the sata ports I had my drives plugged into or not, but at this point vista setup saw all my drives and I chose the 100 gb array and installation went smoothly.
Excellent… now I just have to install photoshop and see if it loads in 4 seconds like on my friends new computer with the stripe. If not, then I'll probably just cry.

I have the very same issue except two things. When I try to see why it will not load the Array I find that the first drive (Maxtor 6V160E0) is red and considered to be bad. Did you happen to notice if your system showed the same thing?
I have moved the drives around and it still corrupts the Maxtor 6V160E0. I have not tried to move them to the end of the SATA connections. I will try that and see what happens.
Other thing was the JMicron would see my NEC DVDRW, but thought it was a ACSI and it would only read at 12X. It even stated that in the OS. I then was told by the Techs that they have not had alot of luck with NEC drives. So, I purchased a LiteOn SATA II DVDRW, connected it to the JMicron SATA connector and it came alive. I then found it to turn out worthless DVD's and CD's. Not even that Drive would read them after burning. I got so ticked about the JMicron I just shut it off in the BIOS. I hooked up the drive to the #4 port and whala, no more problems with burn. Now it reads, writes, and re-writes at the stated speeds (also I needed to update the firmware twice since I purchase the drive. The MS updates did something to it and the new firmware fixed it.). I have never been able to get a drive to work correctly on the JMicron no matter who made it.
I sure hope that MSI has scraped any board that will ever use that controller. JMircon is not my friend!
I am going to get 2 more SATA II drives and try this without having to backup all my data.

I need help getting my P965 Platinum board to work

ok, I've tried researching it and searching the forums but I'm still having a lot of trouble and it's all a tad bit confusing. I've finally gotten all the stuff hooked up but I've run into trouble. My dvd drive and hard drive are both IDE and they aren't being recognized in BIOS, although I can select them as boot devices(the exact devices like ASUS DVD, not the generic cd-rom one). After it goes through th msi logo screen it goes to a screen with JMICRON stuff on it with the name of my hard drive in blue and my dvd drive in green, and to press any key to continue. If I try to boot from an xp cd in the dvd drive it gives me an :
"CDBOOT : Couldn't find NTLDR
Error loading OS"
error.
I think getting this error may have to do with the dvd drive and hard drive not being recognized in BIOS. Now, I read that one solution was putting the drivers on a floppy and booting from that. Of course I don't have one but I was able to scrounge one up from somewhere but with no blank floppies. I rewrote over a couple of the old one I had, one doesn't get recognized when I put it in and trying to boot from it give me an error and tells me to remove and media, the other is unformattable and the last one gives me an error that just says it cannot boot or there was a boot error. I download the driver folder and all I did was copy the inside of the floppy32 folder and paste that onto the floppy. Please help me, I'm on the end of my rope here. I've been dealing with one installation problem after another and now I feel even more broken now hat I know how p965 doesn't have native IDE support. I don't have SATA anything, but I do have a cd burner, a flash drive, an xp disc and possibly floppy stuff.

I went to the g4 forums so I could bother them about it because I didn't want to bring up something that's already been answered on here, but I've gotten barely any help from them and all the issues I've read about on here don't exactly relate to my situation and are kinda confusing. Seems like some who have tried two devices on the JMICRON IDE port have had trouble. Try without the hard drive and see if you get that error. If that is the case I would try a PATA to SATA converter for your hard drive and connect it to one of the Intel SATA Ports.

New Computer with the P965 Platinum

Hello. I'm new to computer building. I'm tired of Dell. I just ordered the following setup:

Did I screw anything up? I was wondering if I will be able to assemble the computer and have it boot the first time. Or should I expect problems? Does anyone have any insight or wisdom for me as to what I should expect?
I had a few specific questions:
1.) RAID0 configuration: Is there more than one RAID controller? If so, which is better?
2.) Windows Vista (32 bit) installation: Is there anything I should do before installing Vista?
3.) Overclocking: After the dust settles I want to mildly overclock my CPU, GPU, and RAM. Does anyone have any recommended overclock settings or links on how to do this?

Why overclock? Mainly because of intellectual curiosity and because faster is better all else equal. It's like Spinal Tap - I want my volume to go to 11!

My computer runs great and is fast. It's been quite a learning experience so far. You guys have been a lot of help. Thank you.
I created a bootable USB drive (definitely good to have around) and flashed the BIOS to 1.5b3.
At boot time, the computer beeps once for every USB device that is plugged into the computer. Is there a way to disable that beep in the BIOS? I have a USB mouse and keyboard and it's a bit annoying to listen to the beeps.
I installed CPU-Z. I got a scare to see my CPU idling at 1.6 GHz instead of 2.67 GHz (6 multiplier vs. 10 multiplier). Then I realized it was completely normal because of Intel SpeedStep.
I installed MSI DualCore Monitor, nVidia nTune, CoreTemp to monitor my temps.
Here are my temps:
Closed case (messy wires still)
- GPU 68 C
- System 40 C
- CPU 34 C (CoreTemp & DualCore Monitor) vs. CPU 40 C (H/W in BIOS)
Does anyone know why the CPU temp measurements differ so dramatically? SpeedStep?
If I take the side panel off the computer, all temps drop 3-5 C.
I noticed that HDD write cache is disable by default. Do you guys think it's worth enabling? It's a performance vs. data protection question. I don't mind a little data loss in the event of a power failure, but I don't want the OS to become permanently unstable.

Comments on my proposed build using the P965 Platinum

My current PC is over three years old and I'm itching to upgrade. I'm starting off with Windows XP but will move to Vista eventually.
This is what I've come up with so far and I'd welcome any comments:

I'm not a game player but want to be able to run all the Vista eye candy when I eventually upgrade. I do thrash my machine a fair bit with downloaded stuff that needs parity checking, decompressing and converting if necessary. I also tend to have loads of applications running at the same time. I'm not interested in overclocking.
I also have the following questions:
1. I understand that Windows XP won't recognise the full 4 GB of RAM, will Vista?
2. Is it worth having 4GB RAM under Windows XP in preference to 2GB?
3. Can I get by installing without a floppy drive as my DVD Drive isn't a SATA one and I'll need the additional drivers. Can a windows install recognise drivers on other media such as a memory card in a card reader attached via USB or a USB pen drive?
4. Will my power supply be adequate? I will be adding hard drives as time goes on and possibly another optical drive.
5. What advantage is there to running the SATA drives under AHCI and if necessary will I be able to pull the drive out and access it in another PC with a different BIOS?
I've not built a machine for ages, so I'm well out of practice and spending ages on research. I'll be grateful for any help you can give me.

I do development and such. Run one or two VM's at a time. A lot of apps running at same time.
I went with the P6N Platinum. The chipset seems pretty good.
I went with the E6600 and same RAM, although I went with 4 gigs due to the VM's running.
After reading some reviews and such, I would recommend going with the Saphire 512 version of the X1950 Pro, which I did. I'm running Vista Business and the Aero interface is good and my index from Vista, for what its worth, is about 5.9 with the 3-D stuff.
I'm not familiar with the PSU. While I've worked with a couple other major PSU companies, I have NEVER been burned by PC Power & Cooling's products. A little more expensive, but they have been rock solid. I've been able to hang onto their PSU's over the years until the wattage becomes too much of an issue, to which I buy whatever covers it.
I tend to never use anything other than Pioneer or Plextor on the optical stuff. For video work and my experience in the duplication area, both companies products have far exceeded the performance, longevity and fewest coasters for the small difference in price difference.
XP X64 will see the full 4 gigs. X32 editions will not. I would suggest going to X64 Vista when you make that move, however you'll have to do a clean install. Drivers can be a bit of a tough thing, but I need rock solid performance and that gives me that.
2 Gigs is really pretty good. With XP, it will see the extra space and take around 500-600 megs to improve performance. With Vista, its about double that. Running a lot of apps or doing some memory intensive apps, such as graphic suites, etc, you will not regret 4 gigs. That will lighten the load on disk paging.
I didn't install a floppy. I had to dig around and found some utilities for format a USB key and boot to a DOS. So I use that, setting the bootup on the board to use the memory key as the initial bootup device. From there I've been able to do RAM testing as well as flash bios.
I'm running around a 520W PSU. But its a solid 520. But with the high performance card and 4 SATA HD's and the optical, I will probably upgrade up to the 750W PC Power and Cooling. That's what is recommended by their selector for the board anyways. For now, I have not found any problems in the PSU end.

DVD Burner problem with P965 Platinum

I have had on going issue with my DVD burner. When i try to play or esp burn a DVD the whole PC slows down and i am unable to open or run any other applications. The Burner is connected via IDE cable and i have tried 2 other DVD Burners with all the same result. When i play a DVD the picture jitters and when i burn a DVD the burn rate is about 10 x slower than my other PC. It comes across as if there is a data transfer problem, not sure though.
Could this be a bios issue or maybe a faulty IDE port on the MOB ???

I would also like to add that, this fix has also fixed my Lan input port. I built this PC about 3 weeks ago and from day one the Lan connection would come up with that "Limited or no connectivity" issue. So I thought it was a faulty Lan port so I went and bought a PCI Lan card to fix that issue.
But as soon as i applied this fix, I noticed the network connection popped up so I tried it out and the damn thing now works.

P965 Platinum and Vista x64 RAID config?

Ok, I have looked all over this forum for Vista x64 issues. Nothing even comes close to my problem. When I load Windows Vista Ultimate x64 Edition onto a clean SATAII drive (single non-RAID drive) I have no problems what-so-ever.
Now here is when it really gets weird. When I run install on a RAID array (2 SATAII Seagate 160GB drives) I see issues in the install. First thing I see is it corrupts the data on the first drive. This causes a blue screen at restart. When I go into the RAID config (ctrl+I) I see the first drive has errors. The only thing I can do is delete the RAID and start over.
When I reinstall Win XP Pro X64 I have no problems at all. I have downloaded the latest drivers from the downloads section and I have tried the newer Intel drivers. Non work!
Computer info:
CPU: Intel 3.4GHz Pentium D x64
MB: MSI P965 Platinum
Storage: 2x Seagate 160GB SATAII
RAID: Intel ICH7R/ICH8R SATA RAID driver 2006-08-29 (and have tried the newer driver from Intel)

Oh yeah, I looked at the specs sheet for the P965. They need to remove the NEC 3550 from the "OK" list since it does not Wright period or READ at install. I went through a big deal with MSI about this and they still have not removed it.

Well sh**! I borrowed a friends Vista x86 and found it to also have the same issue. Would not even load the "Choose Drive" screen or allow me to even install the RAID drivers.
Man when a board gets Vista approved is must not take much. I have had compatibility issues with this board since day one. I think maybe it is time to through it away. What a shame since it is only a few months old.

P965 Platinum + Audigy 2 ZS or X-Fi Conflicts

Hey there.
Hopefully someone can help me workout a small issue I've been having for awhile.
I'm running the following:
Intel Core2 Duo E6600 2.4Ghz
MSI P965 Platinum
2x Geil 1Gb DDR2-800
XFX nvidia 7950GT 512Mb
2x LG IDE DVD-RW drives
320Gb SATA Seagate Cuda.
and either:
Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS (PCI) or
Creative Soundblaster X-Fi oem (PCI)
My problem is the same with either Soundcard.
If either of the IDE DVD-RW drives are in use, ie when I'm copying or viewing data on a CD or DVD or burning a DVD or CD, and I'm playing music, watching metacafe or youtube, or playing a game my sound starts stuttering & skipping really really badly, wether . I can get around the problem by not having any sound playing when I use the DVD-RW drives, but this is a bit of a pain, and is surely avoidable.
It seems like there is a conflict between my IDE channel (which there is only one of) and any PCI sound card I install.
Any idea's ? Anyone ?

No IDE device detected on p965 Platinum

Hi, I have a p965 platinum and I get the others parts for my new pc (cpu, ram and vga) first, I have to update o the last bios v1.6 to can work with the 1333 bus of the cpu (e675) I update and start ok, but now, I have to install a system, but no detect dvd or hard disk conected to IDE, I was try with a lot of combination of configuration on sata, raid, ide, enchande, disable, etc. but can't fix it. I was read a lot of people with problem like this, or umda on dvd and fix with a bios update. I been update to the last bios, but problem still no fix....any idea?...I'm looking to install windows via network, but one tiime I have windows, I need dvd anyway, so need to fix this problem

My suggestion is to start from scratch:
Unplug main A/C power connector from PSU, hit power-on button a few times to drain capacitors and Clear CMOS. After restarting load Optimizes defaults in BIOS and make sure the JMicron controller is set to RAID:
Integrated Peripherals --> Onboard RAID Controller --> IDE
Make sure that the IDE devices connected to the JMicron controller are jumpered correctly as Master and Slave.
If that does not solve your problem, I suggest you use a SATA HDD and connect it to one of the Intel SATA Ports. The JMicron controller is a tricky thing and seems to be picky with drives sometimes (especially if two drives (HDD+opt. drive) are hooked up to the IDE port.

P965 Platinum system freeze

I have a problem with my new system. Every time I start downloading with a download program (e.g. utorrent, Azereus) the system freezes after 5 minutes. This also happens (but taking longer before freezing) when I use MS Office or MSN. When the system freezes I can't do anything, the mouse isn't reacting, no error message, no blue screen nothing. The only thing i can do is reset my system. After booting up there is no error message, or anything suggesting a problem. I've update my bios, raid drivers, VGA drivers, or any driver i could think of. I also tried using the SATA 7 (Jmicron) controller, but same problem.
The strange thing is that after i used my IDE HD as master drive for windows and not the SATA HD I could download using utorrent (eg). It seems the problem lies with my MB or my SATA HD, but i don't know how to fix it.
Can anybody help me!?

Reason for your issue can be other, or more than one problem, but your weak PSU is most suspected for me at this time.
Tests to be performed:
get 3DMark 06 --> http://www.futuremark.com/download/3dmark06/
and leave your system to loop tests for 3-4 hours.
get S&M 1.8.1 (160) ------> http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=127
setup CPU priority to long run, include all test, and Power Supply Test too, VGA Heating and toward included.
freezing may come from RAM too or to be software related. get Memtest86 (use test N5 only to test ---c,1,3,5 keyboard shortcuts from a program, lets make 20 loops on test N5, ensure no errors there occur)

P965 Platinum booting problems

Hi all,
I have a serious problems with stability of my system. It seems to behave pretty randomly. Every now and then when the power button is pressed the system seems to start booting up for 2-3 seconds, then suddenly turns off and re-boots again. If everything goes ok windows is loaded and sysem is pretty much stable. However every one in five booting attempts ends up with system trying to boot a couple of times, getting on and off constantly so there is not even a chance o get to BIOS. After some time the POST screen shows up saying that an overclocking attempt has failed and system will be restored to te defaults. The story is that there has never been an overclocking attempt whatsoever since I can not get he system running stable at stock settings!!! Anyway, I get finally to BIOS but sometimes next restart of the system occurs and the story is all over again. When I finally get to the settings and restore the defaults the system will reboot alright and for the next couple of times it will turn on normally untill the next doggy start forces me to get to the BIOS and start al over again. Initially I thought that this is due to the fact that the memory runs at 667MHz(2x333MHz) when the FSB is set to 266MHz - FSB:DRAM 4:5. I changed it manually to 533MHz (FSB:DRAM 1:1) but the problem did no vanish. I also tried different memory timings set manualy and by SPD but it also failed. At this stage I used up all my ideas and really do not know what to do know. The memory I have is pluged in in slots 1 and 3 for dual channel operation.
I bought this motheroard to get fast and stable system that will not failed during week-long simulations and I'm very dissapointed with what I got so far. Below are my system specs:
