Pacman alpm issue, vercmd missing, after rescue from install CD

Hi
I wanted to remove all packages from my system and reinstall from scratch
So i used the pacman tip from the wiki to reinstall all packages on the system
but changed it to remove instead -R instead of -S, little did i think ...
everything on the system was removed, except running processes.
i had no ls etc, no pacman and so on.
So i created a arch cd from another computer and booted on it on my arch install computer.
then i was advised on the archlinux irc. todo a chroot mount and  use pacman to install base-devel (+ base)
Hence i did that, ... after a long long while i succeed.
i first got chroot /mnt  no /bin/bash mesage when trying to start the chroot.
So i copied the files shown via: ldd /bin/bash & ldd /usr/bin/pacman
then i mount:
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/
mount /dev/sda5 /mnt/boot
mount /dev/sda6 /mnt/usr/
mount /dev/sda7 /mnt/var/
(i didnt mount /home).
then
$ chroot /mnt
From here i use pacman to install packages
pacman -S base-devel  - runs fine.
pacman -S base           - i miss one package file (dcrond - i think)
Then instead i go the the very fine wiki again, and see how to install all local packages.
and use that.
However now i get messages under the pacman install of the type .
/tmp/alpm_QWYZ/.INSTALL: line xyz: vercmp: command not found.
------------- || -------------------------: line xyz: [: : integer expression expected
I can't find out where this message comes from, i can find no vercmp comand
(maybe a shell function?)
I get lots of other similar errors.
============================
At last there are al those /etc files which got .pacsave endings, should i think about them?
Here some more errors from a "pacman -S base" via the arch CD and chroot
find: /sys/devices no such file or directory
Which: no /pcmcia-socket-startup.staic in (/sbin)
ERROR: '/sbin/pcmcia-socket-startup.static' is not a file
+ some related files /sbin/pcmcia-**
============================
If i reboot and enter my system on its harddisk instead of via the CD.
I get SH:   not able to change group (-1) : inappropiate ioctl for device.
This error message is by memory, since i just borked something else.
and couldnt load system on harddisk, somehow the kernel has misplaced itself...
============================
Ok more information:
I succeded in booting via hardisk, and it looked very promising.
However ...
Console messages:
device-mapper: ioctl: 4:15.0-ioctl .....
Waiting 10 seconds for device ...
:: running hook [resume]
Waiting 10 seconds for device ...
Root device ´´ doesnt exist, attempting to create it
ERROR: failed to parse block device ids for ´´
ERROR: unable to detect or create root device
.. some general info stuff
You are being dropped to a recovery console

Thanks John, Bill and Graffiti for your interest!
The original install, many years ago, was of an education version from a local college. As updates became available thorough the update manager, they were installed. As stated above, it updated though 6.0 to 6.6, and then on to 7, eventually to 7.1! I can only repeat what happened, but not explain it. I thought nothing of it at the time, as it was all being managed by the update manager. I agree that this last seems to be more an upgrade than an update, but... what can I say? What happened is what happened, and it happened as I described it.
But not's get hung up on the history! Now that I seem to have solved the original issue of not getting past the message that 'a more functional version has been detected', how does one solve the 'invalid serial number' issue that occurs when attempting to reinstall 6.0? Delete the Acrobat registry keys from HKLM and HKCU, and possibly anywhere else? The former didn't work yet, so, where else? Maybe there is an 'update' folder hanging around somewhere with a registry reference that needs to be deactivated?  Something like {AC76BA86-0000-0000-7AC5-6028747ADE00}?
Any further thoughts? And thanks for the input, it really is appreciated!

  • All clips missing after import from camcorder!

All clips are missing after import from camcorder - Canon ZR20.  For some tapes all clips are there, for others there are none.  All the files are there in the finder, but I don't know how to have them show up in Final Cut Pro X.
    Any suggestions?

Ok - this is frustrating.  I have been importing my old miniDV tapes again into FCPX as I wasn't able to transfer all of these projects from iMovie - don't get me started...  After importing about 7 of the tapes the first 3 came in fine, but the last 4 didn't have any clips as I said in my original posting.  Now after restarting FCPX a couple of times all of a sudden the clips are all coming in!  Strange!  Guess I'm OK now.

  • Mail goes missing after downloaded from POP server

I have never run into this before. I have on this brand new MacMini (2 weeks old) with one POP email account set-up on Mac Mail 2.1.1 and in one folder the messages are going missing. Anything about 3-4 days old are fine, but the rest give me a message telling me to download them from the server. In the Mail preferences I have it set to remove from the server after one week, but considering this is a POP account it should have been downloaded to the computer once mail is checked from what I understand. I have seen this problem before with IMAP, but not POP. Now in other folders this isn't happening, not the Inbox or Sent just this one folder. I rebuilt the folder and these messages were completely deleted. Then I repaired permissions, however, in the log it didn't say that there was any issues with Mail. Does anyone have any insight or any suggestions? I just don't want this happening again in the future. Thanks.

If this is a custom “On My Mac” mailbox, in the
    Finder go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/. Can
you see the mailbox there? Report its contents.
Note: For those not familiarized with the
~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home
folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder

  • Faces thumbnails missing after recovery from time machine

I got a new harddisk in my iMac via Apple's harddisk replacement program. I recovered all my data via a Time Machine backup (from a Time Capsule). All seemed fine after recovery of backup. When firing up iPhoto after the recovery iPhoto asks for updating all the thumbnails (don't know why). After a while everything seems fine - all photos are available with thumbnails in the events view. However all Faces thumbnails are missing - all persons in the faces view are black boxes. I can see that all the faces tagging are intact - when clicking a person I can see all the tagged images as black boxes. When switching the little "Faces - Photos" control to "Photos" I can see the photos containing all the tagged persons all right. I seems like it's only the face thumbnails that are missing.
So far I have tried the following without succes:
Repaired the iPhoto database with iPhotos own tool (holding Command and Option down when starting iPhoto)
Updating the entire library from an earlier backup
Updated the faces database files from an earlier backup as explained in this post
I'm out of good ideas now - can anyone help?

Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Issue with battery after waking from sleep ...

    Hey Everyone,
I just recently starting having battery power issues when I awake my machine from sleep. If I am working with a full battery ( or almost full ) say 80% and I put my machine to sleep, it goes to sleep (like it should). If I flip the machine over and press the button on the battery to check it's level I get 4 out of 5 green lights. This is all normal. Now for the strange part ... when I wake the machine back up, regardless of how long it has been asleep the battery meter switches to Red and "calculating..." and basically it shows the battery as empty. If I check the green lights on the battery at this point I get only 1 flashing green light. I do not however get the power warning message. If I check the battery levels in System Profiler it shows my full charge as around 1600 mAh ( around 5500 before it goes to sleep ) and remaining capacity at 0 ( around 4420 before sleep ).
Now, if I continue using the machine it doesn't run out of power ( obviously because the battery is still pretty much full although the system and battery itself doesn't think so ). If I wait long enough the "calculating..." status eventually corrects itself and suddenly I have 80% power and everything has returned to normal! However, if the machine goes to sleep before this, it won't wake up and I need to basically plug the machine in ... then it will turn on and switches to "Charging" which only take about 20 minutes to get a full charge seeing how the battery isn't really empty.
I have read all the posts on the battery issues and I have a machine that's only a few weeks old. It did not experience these problems at first. It seems as if they appeared after I ran the firmware upgrade.
Has anyone else experienced this behaviour? I have done a battery calibration with no luck ... I really feel it is a software issue and not hardware from what I can gather. Any ideas?
I should also note that if I put the machine to sleep with a full battery and also with the power adaptor still plugged in ( and green ) ... the machine wakes up just fine. However, if it goes to sleep on battery power then the trouble begins.
    Cheers,
    Michael.

Have you reset your PMU? The Apple website has instructions for doing that. It sounds like some power management problem, but beware of your battery bulging, which I'm sure is an actual chemical change. I actually only noticed my battery bulging when I removed my battery to reset the PMU, which didn't help me. Apple replaced my battery promptly... Your problem is different from the usual bulging battery, though, so I would reset the PMU.
I understand why you think it is software/firmware related, but I don't buy it completely... Near as I can tell, the charge indicator LEDs on the battery are technically independent of the computer, they still work if you take the battery out. I had a bulging battery and saw some funny things with the LEDs: the computer would completely shut down and I would get no LED signal, not even one light flashing. If I left the computer alone for a few hours, the LEDs would work again, and I could even turn on the computer and get up to 5 minutes of uptime out of it. Have you checked if your battery bulges?
Another thing you might try is check to see if the firmware update was successful. I read somewhere that there was a risk of the update failing and about a procedure for reverting the firmware. Find out how from Apple, though, some people post instructions on the discussions that are incomplete.

  • Many apps missing after upgrade from iPhone 3gs to iPhone 4?

Hi - I'm trying to troubleshoot for my dad who was lucky enough to receive the iphone 4 today. He says the majority of apps didn't transfer from his iphone 3gs. I did a screen share with him and he's right. The apps are on the old iphone 3gs but not showing in his apps library or on the new phone. Anyone else experiencing this? He did a full back-up and had already upgraded his iphone 3gs to the iOS4 software. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had this issue but found the cause and solution.
When upgrading from the iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 4 (initial connection of new phone to iTunes) and AT&T moved my phone number from the 3GS to the 4; the 4 told me to power cycle (and I think unplug). Since a power cycle causes the phone to disconnect & reconnect to iTunes, and since the first sync after plugging the phone in always does a backup, it did a backup of the blank phone settings (no apps), and therefore wiped out the checked apps in the Applications tab of iTunes. (Note: The apps' data did exist, so checking an app, syncing, and then running the app showed the data. Good news: Data's still there. Bad news: Any apps you skip will hold their old data, as opposed to when you delete an app and it removes the app data for you.)
After hitting Erase All Content and Settings on my old 3GS and realizing it only took a minute and not an hour like the original iPhone did running OS 2 or 3, and seeing how smoothly its reinstall went (loaded settings, rebooted phone, and loaded apps OK), and more importantly that iTunes kept the old final 3GS backup and used a new backup for the new iPhone 4, I tried it on the iPhone 4: I hit Settings, General, Reset, Erase All Content and Settings, then connected the phone. It asked which settings to restore, found my old phone backup (used date/timestamp to find right one); it then loaded settings (a few minutes), rebooted, and went right to installing apps. My phone was fine after that - all apps and folders were restored.

  • Audio Files Missing after sent from FCP

I'm sending a sequence to STP from FCP. There are 8 tracks of audio (4 stereo pairs). Tracks 1 & 2 have dialogue, 3,4,5 &6 have SFX and 7 & 8 have music. After sending a Multi-track project I am missing audio files on the dialogue track. The visual reference is there. The audio and video are linked in FCP but sections of dialogue are just not there.
I've repaired disc permissions, trashed preferences, ran Disk Warrior and reinstalled FCS. I'm on STP 3.0.1.
I searched the forum and was unable to find a similar situation. Any and all insight are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

You have to assign tracks to a submix and then out to the master before you can hear them.
But some of the audio files are there and some of them aren't. There is no rhyme or reason for audio that appears and files that are missing. I can hear the dialogue that made it to STP from FCP, along with the SFX and the music. I've never assigned a submix to audio just to be able to hear it.
    Are you on a laptop?
I've tried it on my 8 Core Mac Pro and my 2007 MBP. Same result on both. I have other sequences where everything is sent over completely. It's just this one. It is no different from any other sequence. It is all ProRes 422 and .AIFF 48khz/16 Bit
    Thanks for your input.

  • Dial-up Internet connection support software missing after Rescue and Recovery on T42p

    Hi!
I have a ThinkPad T42p laptop computer with Machine Type: 2373-HSG and Serial Number: xxxxxxx.
The computer came with Windows XP Professional SP1 as well as a number of useful tools and applications preinstalled by the factory.
One of them was a piece of software called something like "Call Waiting" or something similar, as I cannot now remember very well. Its purpose was to allow users receive an incoming telephone call while being connected to the Internet through a dial-up modem connection.
Unfortunately, a few weeks ago, a virus caused so severe a damage to my system that I had to use the Rescue and Recovery feature to have the preloaded operating system, reinstalled.
I subsequently upgraded the preloaded Windows XP Professional SP1 to SP3, upgraded Internet Explorer from the preloaded version 6 to the latest version 8, dowloaded and installed all the other available Microsoft Update files as well all the latest versions of drivers and ThinkVantage utilities and applications from the Lenovo website.
Unfortunately, however, this "Call Waiting" application has been lost as it neither available for download on the Lenovo website nor in the C:\ibmtools folder on my hard disk which includes all the applications and utilities of the system as they were delivered and preloaded from the factory.
I would greatly appreciate your help that could be offered to me about it.
More specifically, I would like to know what the exact name of this piece of software is because I am not sure if it is indeed "Call Waiting" or something else and where can I download a legal copy of it from.
However, if it is no longer available for download, is there any other similar application which would work the same impeccably with my ThinkPad's integrated 56K CXT modem and, if yes, where could I get it from?
    All the best!
moderator note: serial deleted for owners protection.

Wow.. I didn’t think there was anyone left on 56k Dial up...
I think I vaguely remember the software from my old T41 but I think it was IBM propriety and as I don't have that Thinkpad any more unable to check.

  • Audio device missing after wakeing from sleep modeOptions Mark as New Bookmark S

I have an HP Pavilion a1253w. I just installed Win7 home premium 64bit. I had to do "Custom" install as I was upgrading from XP. I also had to change boot sequence to DVD drive to get it to load. (Win 7 installation disk instructed this) I tried to do the easy transfer but it was a mess. Reinstalled win7 (Didn't have to change boot sequence this time). Both times I installed win7 the sound card was not found. Just the "Unknown Device" with the yellow triangle. After windows update the device shows up and I have sound. Now (only after re-install) when the pc goes to sleep when I move the mouse nothing happens, I have to hit a key on the keyboard. When it wakes up, there is no sound card listed. When I do a restart, the sound card is there, and all works well. I know most would say "Just don't have it sleep". This is my son's PC and he always forgets to turn it off. I have external speakers hooked up the monitor is an HP vs17e it has built in speakers but I am not using them.
Now I know there is a lot to read and take in, just trying to put as much info as possible to help you all help me.

Nobody out there has any suggestions, opinions, or anything?

  • Issues with MacBook after waking from sleep

I use my MacBook with an external display, mouse and keyboard most of the time. Frequently, when I unplug and wake my MacBook from sleep, a few odd things will happen:
    - Finder (the desktop) will stop working. I usually have to restart it by pressing "Cmd Option Esc."
    - The graphical transition for Spaces will not initiate. Changing from one Space to another will be instant. Clicking on the Spaces icon and going back to the desktop fixes this issue.
    - The Dock will have a black pixel outline at the top. Again, initiating Spaces from the Dock fixes this issue.
    - If iTunes is open, clicking on another view from the source window (i.e., going from Music to Podcasts) will move the window location.
I've experienced these issues before I formatted my machine (I was also running a previous version of 10.5) so I'm going to rule out an OS issue on my end. But I'm thinking it could be software or hardware related - anyone have any similar issues?

I've been suffering from this too, and am currently trying this:
    http://www.ewal.net/2012/09/09/slow-wake-for-macbook-pro-retina/
Seems to be tied to this 'Power Nap' feature.  I tuned it for 12 hours instead of 24.

  • PDF Printer went missing after clean OSX install

    Hey,
In Adobe Illustrator - I used to have a choice of printers between my Epson and printing to a PDF.
I had to reinstall Mac OSX 10.5.5 (Leopard) and now don't have the PDF printer option.
I found the FAQ regarding precious versions of OSX - but neither solution worked.
I was using the PDF printer fine before my re-install, now it's just missing.
    Where can I find it?
    Thanks!

One last thing. After reinstalling the CS 3 suite, you need to run the
updater to fix compatibility issues with 10.5. You may need to run the
    updater several times.

  • Can't start X, libXaw.so.8 missing after a fresh install of Arch/xorg

    Hello,
i just did a fresh Install of Arch and also installed the xorg Package plus the fitting driver for my GFX card.
did the usual stuff, configured x11 and now when i try to run x, following error pops up:
xterm: error while loading shared libraries: libXaw.so.8: cannot open shared object file: No such file or direcotry
libXaw is installed, also 100% sure the right drivers for my card are installed (nvidia for a GF8400M)
    Any help on this?

i had the same issue; after conky crashed X on me i was getting the above error whenever i tried to start xterm.  i reinstalled libxaw, xorg, xterm, all to no avail; finally, desperately i tried:
    sudo cp libXaw.so.7 libXaw.so.8
and that fixed it; i know, terrible right? i haven't noticed any negative side effects yet (it's been two weeks or so); i can simply remove libXaw.so.8 to reverse what i did (and re-break xterm), but what's the actual way to fix this?

  • Password issue - disks missing and can't install new anti-virus -- HELP!!!

    Hi,
I've got a Mac Mini and since I moved it appears I lost the Mac disks. I've got some serious issues with the Mini's web-browsing slowing down, maybe virus issues and I need to renew my subscription to my anti-virus to hopefully correct the issue. It appears that I need to know the password, which I never set, but I need one to log-in.
What I understand is that I can reset the password to be able to install my anti-virus, but what I'm seeing is that I can't do it without the disks. How in the world do I correct this issue??? You help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    JimBo

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are two issues here, the first being your password. If you can't remember your password and really do need to reset it, you will need your MacOS disk. If you have lost this, it would be wise to get a replacement - you can get these from Apple. Since there are other occasions you might need the original install disk, it's not just for an occasional password reset that you would do well to have one on hand.
It's not clear, however, in this situation why you would suddenly need a password. You say you did not originally set one, which is unlikely since it's one of the first steps in the initial set up of the system. It is of course possible to set a blank password, in which case the password will remain blank of course. The password would be required every time a major install or update was being run.
The second issue is the web-browser slowing down and your thought that this may be virus issues. This is highly unlikely. While there are a few potential Trojans which can gain access to MacOS, none seem to be in wide circulation. There are no viruses. More likely if you're noticing performance issues in your web browser is that you are suffering something more akin to cache issues or possibly a small amount of free drive space. Depending on which antivirus product you already have, it may even be that which is the cause, since this type of software typically adds considerable load to the CPU when running.
That isn't to say antivirus software is a bad idea, because it is better to be prepared than taken by surprise and have no defensive software in the event that MacOS becomes targeted. It's also beneficial to have it if your Mac is in a mixed environment where otherwise you could pass infections unknowingly to Windows systems.
In this situation I would be inclined to do some basic system maintenance using a tool such as YASU, but even that would require your password in order to run. As such, I would first try to clear your browser caches (in Safari, you'll find 'Empty Cache' halfway down the Safari menu) and obtain a replacement install disk from Apple to enable you to get full control of your system if indeed you have a password set and don't know what it is.
