Pacman - Synchronizing package databases

Hello folks,
pacman does not update my system. The last time I did 'pacman -Syu' was on the 23-08-2011, but I can see that there are updates for core and so on.
When I force pacman to update the package list with 'pacman -Syy' or when I try to update the system I will get something like
pacman -Syy
:: Synchronizing package databases...
core 0.8K 8.2K/s 00:00:00 [##] 100%
extra 0.8K 1004.6K/s 00:00:00 [##] 100%
community 0.8K 1134.7K/s 00:00:00 [##] 100%
multilib 0.8K 1432.4K/s 00:00:00 [##] 100%
archlinuxfr 24.3K 368.0K/s 00:00:00 [##] 100%
The databases for core, extra, community and multilib are very small and i guess that's the cause that my system does not update.
The mirrorlist seems to be OK.
Any suggestions on how to update the package database to update the system again. Has it something to do with the latest pacman update?
Thanks!
#EO

  • Pacman gets stuck Synchronizing package databases

Today, I tried to run a normal pacman -Syu to update my system, and I found it hanging at the "Sychronizing packacge databases" step. I can still install and remove packages, but I seem not to be able to resynch my database. Here's the output from pacman -Sy --debug, up to where it stops at.

I've made sure that I have uncommented mirrors and the like-- all these things worked just fine the last time I ran -Syu, a couple days ago.  I've changed no proxy settings in the meantime, so I don't see how that can be the issue.
    Any ideas?

Thanks, that did it. I'm used to getting some sort of message when the mirror doesn't work. How come that didn't happen?

I then tried to use another server in pacman.d but I got the same result. The good news is that I still got internet working ie. can use firefox and surf to different sites
The server seems to be alive

Okey, I have tried all norways, finlands, swedens, germans and usa's mirrors and none of them will work for me. I got the exact same error as stated above! I don't think it's healthy for me to countinue and try out another mirror
I will simply try to reboot my arch and see what will happend..hahaha...this is just crazy!

  • Synchronizing package databases

I get this error when I try to "pacman -Syy" or "pacman -Syu"
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    error: failed to synchronize core:
    error: failed to synchronize extra:
    error: failed to synchronize commutity:
error: failed to synchronize any databases
I'm pretty sure my network is up, I can ping www.google.com
I originally tried to use the example
    [core]
    # Add your preferred servers here, they will be used first
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    [extra]
    # Add your preferred servers here, they will be used first
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    #[unstable]
    # Add your preferred servers here, they will be used first
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    [community]
    # Add your preferred servers here, they will be used first
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
when that didn't work I tried "nano /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist" only to get a newfile. Apparently mirrorlist does not exist. I then tried it "Include = /etc/pacman.d/" in all my lines, wherein I still get the "error: failed to synchronize *"
Should I have anything specific in those lines? what about my mirrorlist, what should it look like.
    note: I'm using x86_64 version.

You can reuse that mirrorlist from svn, but you have to substitute the @carch@ just like the PKGBUILD does :
    sed -i -e "s/@carch@/${CARCH}/g" ${startdir}/pkg/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
So for x86_64, you can do this after copying the file to the correct place :
    sed -i -e "s/@carch@/x86_64/g" /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    I was going to copy http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/p … iew=markup

Yes, you are supposed to do as I said!
First copy it to the correct place, then run that sed rule.

pacman always syncronizes data base. Even after 1 min of pacman -Syu it still upgrades the data base. It worsk fine on the installation side, never downloads/upgrades the same package again, I mean it never upgrades the packages more than once  system is updated, it is fine. Only the pacman's database of packages (core, community and extra) keeps on upgrading all the time.  Earlier it used to say  something like core datbase is up to date but now, from last 1 month I can upgrade data base 60 times an hour, anytime of day. Any solutions ?

Crows wrote:Is the mirror you're using http? I seem to recall that pacman needs ftp mirrors to be able to tell if the list needs updating. Http mirrors must be re-downloaded every time.
You got it right. Its last month I chanegd the mirrors to http. I made that change as rankmirrors shows the time for syncing  as   ftp = 3 x http  , means it says http sync is in 1.8 sec but same ftp mirror syncs in around 3.8 or 5.76 sec. I don't know why pacman says so, but it is consistent in claiming so.

  • (SOLVED)Problems during installation, can not refresh package database

I have been using Arch for a year (dual boot) but for some reasons I had to do a reinstall. It worked fine, but I did some things wrong and I had too reinstall (again, befor even entering the system).  This time (and all the other times i've tried today) I can not complete the "select packages" step, it either freezes at "Refreshing package database" or gives me a message that it just can not be done (sorry, I do not have the exact words atm). I have internet and I've been trying a million different mirrors (including the one I used when it worked). What to do, what to do?
Worth noting is that I had the same problems a year a go, but it solved it self, no idea what I did then.
I would really appreciate if some one knew what was going on - it is driving me crazy beyond comprehension!
EDIT: maby this should have been pasted in the installation section?

I'm trying again atm.
EDIT: The error message I get is just

  • Refreshing package database crashes host machine

    Hi everyone,
I'm having a problem that I can't figure out here.
I have Arch installed on my desktop computer. This is using kde networkmanagement to automatically 'share' the Internet connection on wlan0 to eth0. The ethernet connection is to my laptop, and this is running Arch from a live CD.
I run dhcpcd from the laptop and can connect to the Internet just fine. When I run the installation framework, I can get as far as selecting packages, then when the package database is refreshed, my desktop computer completely freezes, and the database refresh subsequently times out. The same happens when i type '# pacman -Syy', independently of AIF.
I managed to refresh the package database once and carry on with my installation, then my laptop's battery ran out during the download of packages. Could this be something to do with it?
It's not possible to plug the laptop directly into the router as it is in an inaccessible location, unfortunately. All the same, I would like to delve deeper into this problem and see whether I have unearthed a bug, or my setup is at fault. Has anybody any suggestions or a workaround?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    EDIT:
OK this was a bit of a vague diagnosis from me. Using wget on the laptop results in the same crash, which rules out pacman or any software that's running on the laptop. I've also found out that using wget on http doesn't crash it, whereas ftp does. I will try using a http mirror to install Arch, then report back.

And directories are used to load the data. I created the directories in the TEST database and create the physical directory in the TEST database host machine. 1. when issuue was raised from pl/sql - have you check the code ?
    2. Have you tested code independently - instead of executing from job. ?
    3. Forget about production system for a while, try to check the pre-requisites required for the things to run. ?
    4. what is the pacakge code dependent on v$instance error - have you checked across ?

  • [Request]Move icecat to Package Database

Hi, I'm new here so I don't know if I'm in the right place, but I'm posting this anyway hoping that I'm not being preposterous.
I've been using GNU Icecat for a while, preferring it to Mozilla Firefox for several reasons:
1)Is Free Software, free of any of Mozilla's trademark/copyright/licensing burdens
    2)Maintained by the community
    3)It's an official GNU Project
4)Is more sensitive about security issues
5)Does not include any proprietary software. Last time I used Firefox it still had the proprietary crash reporter [EDIT:Disregard that, replaced by Breakpad].
6)It's kept in synch with Firefox development
7)Is bundled with extensions like GNUZilla Privacy Extension and HTTPSEverywhere (which everyone should have)
Before someone calls me a Stallman zealot or something like that or tells me to GTFO and use Parabola or even Debian, my commitment to free software isn't just ideological, I do have practical reasons for using Free Software and Arch has always satisfied my needs in these regards, I don't need to install another distro to do what I've have already been doing since I installed Arch.
Compiling GNU Icecat on my PC takes more than 3 hours. I don't have to do it very often and I prefer compiling over installing binaries anyway, and I'm also aware that it doesn't have to take that long if I avoid re-downloading and re-compiling the entire source. But that's not the point.
I believe GNU Icecat should be moved from the AUR to the Package Database. Right now it's a pretty popular AUR package, with 233 votes and probably way more users. GNU Icecat can perform as well as Mozilla Firefox, has the same features and it's even better in some regards, since it's maintained by the community and it doesn't that doesn't have any corporate interest. Useless features that are implemented right away by Mozilla developers are instead discussed within the Icecat community, making it a much more stable piece of software.
I know that Arch Way and I know what many would answer - that mine is just a political request and that icecat has no real advantage over firefox and so on. But I really believe that GNU Icecat is a better browser than Mozilla Firefox for the reasons which I stated above, and request that the former be moved from the AUR to the Package Database. I am ready to accept a "no", but please tell me why. Thanks for listening.

Seems to me that you're not understanding the concept of unofficial repo or I am confused by your concept of Package Database. If you take a look at pacman.conf, you see the several repositories, but that's not all.
That repo contains among others the -zen kernel, but there are other unofficial binary repos populated with binaries built from AUR packages, see the PF or CK repo
Ok, my fault, sorry if I expressed myself unclearly. I was talking about official binary repos. I was aware of unofficial repos but I never used them because my Arch configuration is really minimal and the PKGDB+AUR already provide for most of my needs, and when they don't I handle the installations myself.
Thanks for your suggestions for the mailing lists, I think I'll hit them.
I don't want to bring the issue any more than needed because it's inappropriate and I already said I didn't want to sparkle flame wars but many distros already have icecat as their "firefox" package - Debian does that and I believe that even Ubuntu at some point did that, although I'm not sure if it still does. Icecat and Firefox are identical in everything aside from few internal and configuration differences and of course, the branding. They both are Free Software released under the same kind of license, three actually. The only reason I have for preferring one to the other is that GNU Icecat is maintained by the community and I'm actually able to get involved in its development rather than sit and watch and wait for my patches to be refused, which is what "open source" corporations like Google, Oracle and MozillaCorp do with their products. It's reasonable to expect to have control over your creation but the input those companies accept from their users is sometimes minimal, they prefer to have guys on their payroll to do the coding rather than honest and passionate independent programmers. Look at what happened recently with OpenOffice and maybe Java as well. I personally don't have the time to check the source for all the software I use so I rely on the Free Software community to help me, and contribute when I can, and to me that's what all the Free Software movement is all about. You don't like something, modify it and make it work. I think it's a very practical view on software and I'm sorry if I sounded like I was preaching for Stallman, which anyway is a noble act that has sadly been criminalized and vilified in the Open Source community just because of the hate spread by open source "advocates" like Google and Eric S. Raymond, which should burn in their personal hell for creating a war between "Open Source" and "Free Software", with the former being cool and the latter being cancerous and viral when in the start it was just about people sharing their source codes.
    Suggestion: paragraphing improves readability.
In Arch (as previously mentioned) its very simple, a developer/TU has to be interested (for a package to move into the repos), else it stays in the AUR. Substitution of icecat for firefox is unlikely, since that would be political rather than practical, and would require the consent of the whole dev team (good luck on that one).
Non-dev/TU members of the Arch community can't do much about this besides creating unofficial repos (which are not in any way at odds with maintaining a 'very minimal' system), but of course there's a trust issue with those as well.

  • Why does pacman lock the database during downloads?

Something that's always irked me about pacman is the fact that it locks the package database during the download stages of package installation, before anything has actually been installed/committed. Is there a reason for this, and if not, would a suggestion/patch be acceptable?
Here's the scenario I'm encountering right now:
    * Downloading large package in background
    * Need to upgrade flash player (YouTube no longer accepts an older version I suppose, and lolcats are a necessity)
    * I cannot do this quick upgrade due to the lock pacman has on the database while downloading said large package

Sounds reasonable, but the following scenario may or may not be a problem:
You have package A B and C installed:
Run pacman -Syu (huge download, all three packages updated)
Simultaneously, you execute pacman -R A (basically modify the pacman DB)
Package A updated (reinstalled) by first process
Not sure how pacman is built, but it probably locks and reads the DB when started, and then does it's thing without worries. In any case, it does support resuming downloads, so you could just end the long running process, install whatever, and resume.
    I think it's the same with apt-get.
That's an interesting point, although I'm guessing the package manager could check to make sure that all packages that it wants to update are present on the system right after it locks the db, and if for some (rare) reason that one is missing, skip it.
    hadrons123 wrote:
What is that large package which you think is that big?
I think locking is present in all package managers in all distributions and it is  a good Idea, so that someone can't install and uninstall a package at different terminals at the same time, and end up with a messed up package manager .
Well in this case, it is eclipse (>200 MB), but there are a variety of other large packages in the repositories. What may be small to you may seem massive to those with slower connections.
How could it become messed up? I'm not proposing the database lock be eliminated, but rather wait until the actual installation process begins before locking it. It's no skin off anybody's ass if someone simply downloads packages simultaneously.

  • Solaris 10 x86 package database corruption

After installing Solaris 10 3/05 s10_74L2a X86 (version as described in /etc/release) I find that the package database file /var/sad/install/contents appears to be corrupt.
If I do a "pkginfo -l <package name>" command to view the details of a package I get an error like this:
    pkginfo -l SUNWaccr
pkginfo: ERROR: bad entry read in contents file
    pathname: /usr/apache/tomcat/webapps/tomcat-docs/servletapi/javax/servlet/ServletRequest.html
problem: unable to read content info
If I add a package, say from the Companion CD, it to gives the error.
    I cannot remove packages either.
I have re-installed and tried the pkginfo command immediately - without adding any packages.
    Anybody experienced this?

    what's your DHCP server configuration?
type dhtadm -P and that will print the configuration of the dhcp table and all your macros.
On another note, I also have a blade server (3Up CMU-4) that has USB keyboard and mouse, even if the interface is PS/2 (converted internally to USB). Solaris will not recognize the keyboard and mouse when installing or booting, but after the kernel is loaded I can use them OK. I do get the keyboard profile error and I think it is related to the fact that there is no PS/2 k/m enabled. The only way that I found that I could use the mouse in the graphical interface was to use a USB keyboard with a hub and connect a USB mouse to the keyboard, Anybody has any explanation for this behavior?

What does a package database consist of? can any one give me complete description.

    Hi,
    This is Prabhuram Devar,
    A package database consists of:
/var/sadm/pkg: This is a directory containing one directory entry for every package installed on the system.
    /var/sadm/pkg/<packagename>/pkginfo
    /var/sadm/pkg/<packagename>/save/<patchid>/undo.Z for the backout packages.
/var/sadm/pkg/<packagename>/save/pspool/<packagename>: A sparse package that is used for non-global zone install.
/var/sadm/install/contents: This file has an entry for every file in the system that has been installed through a package. Entries are added or removed automatically using the binaries installf and removef.

  • Package Database, AUR, and Wiki Search - Chromium Extension

I made a Chromium (Google Chrome) Extension to search the package database, AUR, and the wiki.
You can search from the extension's icon or by right-clicking on highlighted text. (I've found this feature the most useful)
There are many configurable options in the Extension's option page and by default it will not search AUR or Wiki only the Package Database.
You can download the extension from Google here: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/de … nbhk?hl=en
Or you can get the source here and pack the extension yourself: https://github.com/FunctionVoid/ChromeArchPackageSearch
I am also considering creating Firefox and Opera ports.
