Paint chipping off?

So, my Macbook is just over a year old and I've had some problems all year long. First, my enterkey didn't function all of a sudden, and they replaced the entire keyboard and lower encasing.
Then, the lights on my macbook didn't function, lights like the battery-indicator, the shift-key-light... Again they replaced the entire lower part of my computer. This was all under waranty.
Now my MBP just fell out of the waranty-zone, and it seems like the edge near the trackpad is starting to chip off? I didn't even know the MBP are painted, aren't they supposed to be made out of one solid block of aluminium?
It's like black tiny dots, and it feels kind of rough too.
What should I do?

How exactly do you sand pits out of a piece of aluminum?
Don't sand the pits out, just the rough edges so when one's hand or finger brushes over it so it's smooth to the touch.
There's nothing you can to do remove scratches or pits without affecting the finish of the surrounding area
The pits can be filled and any rough edges can be buffed without affecting the surrounding area with the proper tool and attachments.
Color matching with fill material will be the hardest part.
Just because you tend to think it can't doesn't make it so.  Put a buffing head on one of these.

  • IPhone 5 paint chipping off

I have had my iPhone 5 for a week and a day and the black paint is coming off already! I am 30 years old and take care of my stuff. I have never put it in one of my pockets while there is something else in them. Basicly I have treated this phone like a new born child! I am fuming!

This seems to be a common issue with the iPhone 5. Search the forums here for "iphone 5 chips" or Google the same and you'll come up with a ton of user experiences with the issue.
    You can either:
    1. Live with the scratches/hide them with a case
    2. Return the phone & exchange for another
    3. Return the phone for a refund and purchase at a later time (if/when manufacturing issues are resolved)

  • Paint Chipping off macbook pro keys?

I bought my macbook pro in August of 2012, recently over time the paint has begun to chip on 3 of my keys, I was wondering if apple will replace theys keys, I have the additional apple care, but I am willing to pay to get the keys fixed.
Does anyone know if apple will fix this and how much it will cost?
    Thanks!

make an appointment at the genius bar or an AASP for an estimate.

  • IPhone5 paint chipping

I bought my iphone5 last week from The Carphone Warehouse and noticed the paint had chipped on the box fresh phone. I showed the sales clerk who brought another one out that was also scratched, and then opened a third factory sealed box which was, yet again, chipped. As it was the last one in stock I had to take it. This morning my phone slipped out of my hand and after a 20 cm fall, landed on my desk and a big chunk of paint chipped off of the outer steel rim. My phone looks like it's been through the wars after owning it for less than a week! I took it to the Covent Garden Apple Store to show them and expecting another exchange, only to be told that they will not help as the paint chipping is not an official known issue. This is the worst customer service i've had with Apple, who have previously been superb whenever i've dealt with them. It's obviously a flaw and everyone will soon be having this problem, standards are definitely slipping. Not at all happy!

    Andy,
I have had a similarly frustrating situation. Bought my shiny new and durable (so I thought) iPhone 5 from Orange three weeks ago. Didn't even take it out without buying a screen protector and case. Within 10 days I was alarmed to see the paint chipping off.
I went back to Orange, they sent me to Apple - who said I should go back to them. Apples or oranges I said, I just want a resolution (Apple worker didn't see the funny side) said the only thing to do was make an appointment with the genius bar. Clearly a complaint to be made with the advertising standards authority, because a '"genius" has just told me that Apple would not replace it, for the same reasons you were told. Nice, when I asked to finish work early and made an 18 mile round trip journey to Apple in the Trafford Centre. Clearly fobbed off by the first Apple worker who knew her co-worker would have said the same thing. I am very, very disappointed with Apple, despite really good customer service with other Apple products in the past.
I don't buy the anodising process to attach the paint excuse either. I used to mountain bike when I was a lot younger and some were sold with black rims using a similar process. They lasted a lot longer and that was with constants brake pad friction.
Does anyone at Apple customer care even read these? And if so, do you guys care about the bad taste you're leaving in your customers mouths as a result of this issue?

  • Paint chipping, lots of it. Is it covered?

Quite a bit of the matte coating on my black MacBook has been chipped off from, what I think is, regular use. I just pick up my MacBook, set it down on my desk, maybe use it on the carpet, but that's about it. I don't know why my MacBook has had so much of it chipped off.
I was just wondering if this amount of paint chipping was covered under Apple warranty, and if I could get a new MacBook if it is covered.

I would definately call and bring it to a genius bar. That should not happen. Good luck!
PS - I am 90% sure they will not replace your macbook. It is very rare they replace them with brand new ones. You never know though!

  • Laptop paint coming off around touchpad

Hi, I have an HP 1a30us and the warranty ran out about 2 months ago.  Right before the warranty ended, I had the laptop sent in to be fixed because the paint around the touchpad area kept chipping off. When I got it back, the parts where the paint had came off were gone and it looked like they replaced those parts.
Within the first couple weeks that I got it back repaired, the paint started chipping of again, and in the same area. I'm not using the touchpad area it with long, sharp fingernails or anything, just normal use, so I can't understand how the paint keeps chipping off.  It would be great if HP could repair it again even though its out of warranty, because its the same problem I had before, and it hasn't stayed fix.
    Thanks.

Is it on the right button, too? It is happening right where you touch it the most, but should be able to withstand normal wear. But replacing those parts is expensive and likely not worth it unless there is a functional issue.

  • Paint worn off on all iPhone 6 & 6 Plus on bottom?

I went to the Apple Store today and got my first opportunity to check out iPhone 6's up close. I happened to noticed that the paint was worn off (chipped?) on all iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models on display right at the area of the lightening connection port.  I looked at at least 3 different iPhone 6's and they all had the paint worn off on the bottom.  Is this a rampant occurrence that many are experiencing?

Fair enough...definitely seems like reasonable scenario.  Thanks for chiming in...I'm really happy to hear it's not a mass issue.  I really enjoyed checking out the iPhone 6plus in particular.  I will say that all of the reviews of the phones being very slippery weren't as over exaggerated as I expected.  They are very slippery phones for sure.  The paint chipping easily would really bug me so I'm glad this is likely a case of people not being respectful of the demo models.  How hard is it to be mindful of not jamming the phones on their respective display connectors.
    Thanks for sharing your insight.

  • IPhone 6 Plus Paint Chip

The top of my phone has a lot of paint chipped from it. Apple said they won't replace it, so is there any alternative to repainting it?

The paint is chipping off by my headphone jack and I've been extremely careful with my phone.  The thing that bothers me is the paint is obviously defective and it's going to lower my trade in value.  It's unfortunate that apple won't remedy an issue they've obviously created by not using materials that will stand up to day to day use of headphones.

  • Iphone 6 paint chip beside headphone jack

After plugging in my headphones into my iphone 6 for the first time, I realized that the paint work beside the headphone jack hole suffered a small chip. Thinking back when I was using the previous versions of iphone, it was designed in a way that an isolated ring was there in place to prevent the headphone plug from snapping onto the phone's body directly while plugging in. Thus, I am quite disappointed that apple actually do away with this design feature which reduces the wear and tear, eventually the paint chip will be more obvious.

If the device is under warranty and the issue is not the result of user inflicted damage (i.e. dropping the device or water damage), Apple will likely replace it.  Keep in mind that what anyone says here has no bearing as we are not Apple employees, but merely users like yourself sharing our experience and knowledge.

  • W520 Paint Rubs Off

    Hello everyone!
My W520 is only a couple weeks old, and already the paint on all four top corners has completely rubbed off (the corners are shiny) and there is a smudge on the top of my computer of permanently rubbed-off paint. I'm EXTREMELY careful with my laptop and the only wear and tear it gets is when I carefully place it in my Northface backpack (with a soft built-in laptop sleeve) for transportation. After hearing so much about Thinkpad quality and durability, I'm really surprised the paint began rubbing off after a couple days.
Has anyone else had these problems (so quickly after purchasing)? Is there a possibility that the paint on my W520 is a bad batch?
    Thank you!
    - Michael
P.S. Other than the bad paint, the laptop is amazing and I would definitely recommend it to others. I've been an Apple user for 10 years and this is my first PC since then and I'm very happy with the performance... Just not the build quality. If Lenovo uses better quality materials, I would probably try to talk the entire applied mathematics deparment at my university to switch away from Apple. Seriously, this thing is blazingly fast and cuts through numerical computations on MATLAB and C!

    Hi Michael:
I've had about half a dozen ThinkPads over the last 15 years.  My experience has been that there will be a very tiny amount of 'rubbing off' (wear) of the paint in the corners after about 3 years of use.  By 'tiny amount', I mean maybe a small spot that is about 1 mm in diameter in each corner.
I just purchased a new W520 (got it about 6 weeks ago) and I have been carring it around in a fairly tight-fitting Targus bag that I keep in the saddlebag of my motorcycle.  In the last 6 weeks, I have ridden about 3,000 kilometers around Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece with the ThinkPad in my saddlebag - and there is no evidence of any wear at all on the ThinkPad.  The roads are pretty poor in some of these countries, with lots of potholes and bumps...
What I am getting at is this:  If you are seeing paint coming off of the top corners of your ThinkPad (this implies the top corners of your screen), then your laptop must be abrading (rubbing) against the inside of the sleeve that you carry it in, and the material on the inside of the sleeve is kind of working like sandpaper against the finish on the outside of the screen.
When we (as users) think about protecting our laptops with sleeves, bags, backpacks, etc., I think we normally think about protecting them from impact and from 'bumps' - but, if the sleeve is even a tiny bit bigger than the laptop itself, or if the laptop is not held securely (unable to move) in the bag or backpack, the corners of the laptop are going to rub against the protective container.  Depending on what the material is inside the protective container, the results may be nothing at all (if the material is soft and smooth) or abrasion of the paint (if the material has texture to it, or especially if the material is a woven synthetic fibre).
Because of the rather extreme conditions my laptop experiences (in the motorcycle saddlebag), I have made sure that it is a snug fit into the protective bag, and can't move around inside the protective bag.  Hence - no abrasion, no wearing off of the paint.
Hope this information provides you with useful food for thought.

  • Black MacBook's paint flaking off?

There are some buzz about the black paint flaking off from the MacBook.
Anybody experiencing this problem with their black MacBook?
    Here is the link:
    http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=2397

but with all the problems I've been
reading about, I'm really tempted to wait for a
while... what with flaking of the black macbook,
discoloration on the white, mooing and noise with the
macbook pro and heating issues all around...
Dude! Remember where you are. This is a support site. That means if anything goes wrong, people come here for help. But people who are happy and content with their computers don't come here.
I don't know what percentage of problems the Macbooks are having. They are new, and Apple can't test out what everyone everywhere will do with or to their computer...so when people start doing whatever they do, problems appear that were not anticipated. In addition, this is electronics and with electronics, there is a percentage chance of lemons--that's for any electronics that come out from any company no matter how reputable. So no group of electronics is going to ever be trouble free.
This question is, have there been more problems with the MB than expected given this percentage and given that it's being field tested in mass numbers for the first time? If there are more problems...why and were they taken care of? There was reportedly one bad batch. From what I understand, there are no more of that bad batch so you're good to go on the latest ones--or so I've heard. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
My opinion, the MacBook is a FANTASTIC laptop and you should get one. The keyboard can't be beat, the trackpad is great, the screen is wonderful, the built in camera is fun. It is an AMAZING laptop.
No computer is ever guaranteed problem-free forever--and certainly none are ever going to look pristine forever. Like a new car, you will eventually get that first scratch or dent or flake. Laptops take a lot of wear and tear even if you baby them and keep them wrapped in protective covers. Nature of the beast. They go places and get scratched and bumped. But at least this laptop has a magnetic plug, so you know you won't be likely to jerk it off a table and have it crashing to the floor when you trip over the cord.
And you WILL trip over the cord. I did the first week I had it. The magnetic plut pulled right out and the laptop remained undamaged.
Laptops are more delicate than desktops. Again, nature of the beast. Go to an Apple store, test out a MB. If you want it and like it, get it. Cost-wise, it's a great deal for a laptop. Buy Apple care and you'll have it covered for 3 years pretty much no matter what happens.

  • Is space black colour in aluminium and steel watch  or will chip-off like iPhone 5, I m looking to buy aluminium model in black, but scared, because apple rejected to swap the black with whit, so horrible service.

is Apple watch (aluminium model or steel model) in space black colour specially in aluminium model, not going on chip off, it happened in iPhone 5. And Apple does not seem to be worried about iPhone 5, and denied to swap with white one.

I asked this same question in another post, those that were burned by the black coating in the past I think will be skeptical on the black watch until we get some feedback from actual owners. I have ordered both black and plain aluminum since I won't see until June anyway, I figure there is plenty of time to cancel the one I don't want
