Pal HDV Timecode issues

I am trying to capture a single file while digitizing I have all user settings, capture across timecode breaks ect...and it still makes a new clip at every timecode break.....I am using a sony HVRM35U. It is Pal.
I tried using the Imovie approach that doesnt work, the size I think is 720p50i.
is there any work around here?

Hi
He described the problem that the menu would not let them select any buttons, and that the menu was cut off top and bottom.
What size did you use to build your menu backgrounds and overlays?
Anyone have any suggests on how to get the first play to work?
It uses to be so simple as selecting what item do you want to run first in DVD Inspector in DVDSP. What element is your first play? The Menu? You cuold try building a very short track (3/5 secs), with just black image and use that as first play (or a simple slideshow with a single black image). I have heard around the forums about some issues with some specific players with a menu as first play.
Hope that helps !

  • HDV Timecode Issue/Workaround for Final Cut Express?

I have a Canon HV20 1080i HD Camera with Final Cut Express 4 HD. When trying to capture HDV video Final Cut (and iMovie) likes to break up the video into random clips instead of the single video that I would like it to be so I can manually edit the file like normal DV video. I understand the reason is because of no valid timecode data coming over Firewire from the camera. Is there a workaround to get this working?

The iMovie 08 clips have names like "clip-2007-08-01 12;41;53.mov" and are stored in folders grouped by dates/events. The date on the clips' files is the date you transferred them to the disk but the filename (above) is when the camera recorded the tape. You can import these files into FCE and the clip names inherit the file names.
The "properties" of the clip as shown in FCE shows the files' modification dates/times (creation time in this case) -- not the info from the tape. I think that's the case with material captured in FCE 3.5 but I haven't captured anything directly into FCE 4 to compare.
So regarding an answer for your 'home movies', the clips names will start out with the date it was taken but the properties shows the date you transferred the tape to the computer. (Sorry if I'm being redundant here.)
Regarding the quality, the FCE project is 1080i and retains the quality you captured. I have no experience exporting it to MPEG4 for a PC. YMMV. There are a bunch of options upon export. I just told it to generate 1080 at the original FPS and 1024kbps (just a number I picked). It think it said an eight minute video is going to be 100meg and take an hour to produce on my iMac. (A quick calculation tells me the size may be off by a factor of two.) The Quicktime forum may be a better place to ask this question.

  • I need to output a PAL HDV project from FCP as a PAL DV file with 4 audio t

I need to output a PAL HDV project from FCP as a PAL DV file with 4 audio tracks - specifically one stereo pair to be t1&t3, the other stereo pair to be t2&t4. This is the standard way requested by an international distributor of tv programmes. I understand how to set the sequence in FCP to output 4 audio tracks - either 2 stereo pairs (1&2, + 3&4), or 4 discrete tracks. But how do I then output this as a QT file?
The manual tells me that to export multiple audio tracks, File>Export>QT Movie has it's Config pop-up menu in the Audio Settings area of the General tab of the Sequence Settings. Well, that's set for 4 discrete channels, but the QT export settings only allow for 2 mono or 1 stereo output, and that's what I get when I try it. What it says in the manual just doesn't happen.
Exporting via Compressor, on the other hand, has an abundance of choices of 4-track outputs, none of which are labelled as anything resembling 'discrete'. Would any of those 4.0 settings suffice? Or am I likely to get myself into difficulties further down the line? As I am monitoring for this task on a 2-track audio system, I cannot confirm exactly what I am getting when I use any of those settings.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    John

Call me naive, but I've not heard of splitting the stereo pairs like this before.
What broadcaster? (perhaps one of our EU regulars will drop in...)
You can do all sorts of pairing but it is coincident tracks pairing- eg 1/2 + 3/4
    Sorry I can't offer anything.

  • "PAL" HDV to NTSC DVD

Wondering if I can go directly from "PAL" HDV (only PAL in the sense that it's 25fps) to NTC m2v (and ac3 obviously) using compressor with as much quality as possible? I usually do standards conversion within fcp using Natresses plug in, but wondering if this is a viable workflow and whether I should adjust the resizing and retiming controls in the compressor presets for maximum quality.

thanks RedTruck, i will try this!
    quick question:
is JES deinterlacer the best way to convert the NTSC HDV to PAL HDV (or 1080/60i to 1080/50i)?
client also now wants this on PAL digibeta, so i'm thinking maybe the easiest way of doing all this is getting everything to 1080/50i HDV PAL, exporting via the camera back to HDV tape then taking the HDV tape to a dub house and have it downconverted there to DigiBeta. from that, reimport as SD PAL to make the PAL DVDs. how does this sound?

  • Imovie 11 timecode issue DV tape import

    Hi all,
I am having an issue with importing a DV tape of my Sony Recorder, as it skips several scenes. I have been investigating and it seems I have Timecode issue with the DV tape, It states in several forums that I have to deselect the option to "import as individual clips". However I am unable to locate this option . Can anybody help my out or give me another solution of how to solve the issue of skiping several scenes while importing?
    I much Appreciate it.
    Kind Regards,

    Hi
However I am unable to locate this option . Can anybody help my out or give me another solution of how to solve the issue of skiping several scenes while importing?
In iMovie 1 to HD6 - this can be selected in iMovie Pref (Settings)
in iMovie'08 to 11 - I have not found it at all !
And if the final product is a DVD - then using iMovie HD6 - WILL RESULT in the BEST POSSIBLE DVD !
As it can (opposed to iMovie'08 to 11) deliver max quality over to iDVD - and as DVDs are as standard Interlaced SD-Video - keeping this from the miniDV tape to the final DVD will Guarantee the best quality possible.
Alt. to get it in without time code
    1. Use a miniDV Camera - analog out - A/D-box - FireWire in to Mac
    or
    2. Make a miniDV tape Copy. From Camera A - via FireWire - to Camera B - BUT TO GET THIS OK - the new tape must be DUMMY RECORDED - full tape out.
Just set one Camera to record it with just about anything (a wall or other not interesting) - and the full 62 minutes !
Then re-wind it and now record the copy onto it - THIS TO GET ONE UNBROKEN TIMECODE
This also needs a 4-pin to 4-pin FireWire Cable - BUT will give an unbroken miniDV tape Copy.
    • USING A CLEANING miniDV tape - from time to time - is also a good strategy to keep broken timecodes to a minimum.
    • SO ALSO - Recording the full tape before - Viewing (rewinding) it or even WORSE - unloading it (DON'T DO IT).
Some Cameras has a FIND END of Recording - to take up recording next sequence without any code breaks - Use it - My Cameras has it and one can do this to 100% if tape has not been unloaded. One perfectly the other I need to back a few frames - to get it to work.

  • What format for NTSC DV to PAL HDV timeline

I have a production that will be predominantly PAL HDV 1440x108i 50/48Khz for distribution by PAL DVD, PAL Intranet and YouTube. I need to specificy a format that NTSC DV material will be ingested in. I want HQ ProRes 422 the Americans want IMX MPEG. That would require transcoding and give me a 720x576 frame...
Is ProRes the way to go??

  • Premiere Pro CS4: Timecode issues (Scene Detect, Free Run)

    Hi folks,
I am most familiar with Premiere Pro CS3. In the past, I have created multi-camera sequences that are synchronised by timecode. I have been shooting using the Free Run timecode feature across all cameras, as to maintain a sync'd timecode.
Now that I am using Premiere Pro CS4 at work, I am running into a few issues in preserving my timecode values during capture. I have recorded HDV footage using two Sony Z7's. I downconvert the HDV footage into DV upon capturing - this is so that I can use the scene-detect feature, and still supposedly preserve the timecode for each media file. I captured all of the tapes using scene-detect, and the timecode values were correct for each media file captured.
Having saved, closed, and reopened my Premiere Project the next day, the timecode values for the majority of the media files have been reset (ie, they all start at "0:00:00:00". This is very odd! Only a few of the media files have retained their correct timecode values.
Has anyone else experienced this? Could they please shed some light on this problem or quirk? Am I taking the wrong approach in capturing/organising media? I am following the same procedure as I had done in PPro CS3.
I have since deleted the Media Cache/Preview Files, requiring Premiere to re-index, and re-conform the media files. The timecode values are still incorrect. When I select all of my media files and tell them to go 'offline', the correct timecode values re-appear.
    Many thanks for your help,
    Andrew

Does anyone have an answer to this problem?? I think I am having the same problem. I don't have as much experience as the others on the
forum, but basically what I tried to do was filming a multi-camera event in free run timecode, then
captured in HDV split, and assumed I could get Premiere to align the clips accordingly. Anyone have any idea how to do this????
    Any help is appreciated,
    Thanks,

  • HDV timecode frustration

I've read about and encountered most of the issues HDV has with Final Cut's log and capture; but this problem today is driving me mad.
In L&C I'll mark my in and out points as my tape is playing, but when I hit pause, the marks will drop back about 35 seconds all on their own. Hit play and they revert to where I had orginally marked them. If I hit stop instead of pause, they remain, it seems to be pausing the footage that is throwing my timecode off kilter.
Are there any boxes in the capture presets to alleviate this? I've been logging HDV tapes for a while and today is the first time this has cropped up.

Try using capture now... Also, using pro tape is a lot better TC wise than using consumer tape I've noticed. The recording is hotter on it or something I'd guess. Costs more, but can be reused if you need that function, and it's shelf life is a lot longer. Inexpensive consumer tape will stretch where the metal pro tape doesn't as well.

  • Subclip timecode issues for MultiClip edit...Help!?!?

Here is the issue. 2 camera shoot, Cameraman 1 pushed pause during a live concert video shoot.
In order to make a multiclip edit with the other camera's footage, I have made subclips of this camera's footage on each side of the pause.
The other camera in the shoot had issues as well so I have been forced to use a sequence and alternant timecodes to line everything up with my sound file.
Everything works well until I get to the subclip after the pause. I try to modify the alternant timecode to correspond with the sequence timecode but when I enter the approporate number FCP forces a different number to appear.
My hunch is that because these are subclips of the same captured clip I am not able to modify the timecode as I want to. Can anyone confirm this hunch?
And...what can I do about this? Do I have to recapture? I hope not. I have tried to create a new master clip in the modify window but the problem persists. I am so close to getting this into the multicam editor I can taste it. Thanks.

Solved it... I ended up having to re-capture the shot after the pause so it would be a seperate media file. I guess I could have copied the file outside of FCP, renamed and imported the file seperatly... I realize this problem was caused by not setting the capture up properly to treat the jump in time code appropriately.

  • CS5 R3D Timecode Issues

I am interested to know if anyone has had this issue before, and if so, what they did to resolve it. I have R3D footage shot at 23.976 fps. When I import the clip into CS5 the timecode does not match. (see screenshot below) When I import the clip into CS4 everything lines up perfectly. Is this a bug or do I need to change settings somewhere?

  • PAL Widescreen Render Issues

    Hello Adobe,
I'm in need of some desperate help. For quite awhile now all video not matter what quality or format has rendered out terrible looking video. I usually work within After Effects and render out graphics using adobe media encoder. I have some examples below and all settings used. I need these videos in PAL for DVD render.

  • HDV Compatibility Issues With Avid

I have 9 tapes of footage (about 8.5 hours) shot on the Canon XH-A1. All the footage has been captured with FCP into the HDV Quicktime format. Now I need to be able make that footage compatible to edit in an Avid HD system on a PC. The issue at hand is PCs can't read HD QT files as there are no HD codecs available for PCs yet. Avid accepts file formats of .mxf and .m2t. I have found several programs and methods to convert those file types to QT, but nothing to convert Quicktime to .mxf or .m2t. I tried the demo version of Avid's Thunder Browse which is supposed to convert QT to .mxf, but Avid won't recognize the file. Has anyone else run into a situation like this, needing to get HD Quicktime into a PC Avid system?

OF COURSE there are HD codecs available for the Avid in PC land. Avid, like FCP and other NLEs, captures to a proprietary codec. (the HDV codec and DVCPRO HD codec is not recognized on any system WITHOUT FCP installed...even another Mac)
Gotta recapture them with the Avid. And Avid is capable of capturing HDV...has been for a while...as long as it is one of the new versions, like Avid Express Pro or the new Media Composer crossgrade.
You'll need to export an EDL from FCP using Automatic Duck (www.automaticduck.com). Or you can try just a basic one from FCP...but either way, you are gonna have to recapture with the Avid.

  • How to convert Pal HDV to NTSC

    Hello,
I am finishing up a 100 minute project which was shot on HDV 50i (pal). Has anyone have a suggestion to what is the best way (somewhat inexpensive) to convert it to NTSC? I've heard of Nattress Standards Conversion filters, but I don't believe it works with HDV. Or is it possible to do it within the FCP studio - somehow convert it to NTSC DVD Pro -- How? Always appreciate the Discussions. Thanks,
    Romanz

Yes, you can do that. I do need to be able to email you though so you can get updates and help and stuff though. Let me try again.
And I can email the filters to your mac too, again, if we can get the email working. I'm guessing your email service is blocking my email or something, or it's getting caught in a spam trap. I've just sent another from my .mac account to see if that works.

  • Compressor Pal to NTSC - issues - will progressive help?

I am trying to optimise a pal - to ntsc conversion. Source footage is DV tape.
I realise that there is always a quality hit - i have been using compressor following Anton Lineker's excellent article from Aussie Macworld mar 06 - on slow pal to ntsc conversion.
Am wondering if ,when using the encoder options in compressor, going progressive scan over deinterlaced will help up the quality - at the moment my final output is getting some serious "banding" when any motion happens on screen (eg moving pictureframes have "slat blind" edging while my original pal output maintains a sharp edge on the moving picture frame)- could this be an interlacing issue via the encoder in compressor?
and will progressive play out on many tvs around the world?

You may want to contact Roger Anderson at http://www.innobits.se/ssl/email_us.php . I understand that his new version of Bitvice may be able to solve your conversion issues.
You can download a demo version of this software, ( http://www.innobits.se/ssl/download.php ) to see if it solves your problems. I know that he has incorporated a new set of algorithms to scale between different source like NTSC to PAL and back as well as other new capabilities.

  • PAL DVD playback issues

    Hi all,
I have made a 16x9 PAL DVD. Pretty simple disc - two menus, and a 24 minute video clip with chapters referenced in stories.
The menus are pict files setup with overlays for the button highlights. They are set to 16x9:pan/scan.
The client reported that the DVD did not play in a PAL player and TV. Played OK in a computer. He described the problem that the menu would not let them select any buttons, and that the menu was cut off top and bottom.
Before I sent the DVD, it played fine in my macbook pro, and on a windows laptop. But I don't have a PAL DVD player and PAL TV to test that config.
I burned another DVD today and tried it in a different mac. I saw the menu cutoff issue, and it also appeared that the overlay did not line up correctly so the menu did not work. This was the first time I played the DVD in this mac. Once I reset the view to normal size, it displayed and played fine. I also tried it again at full screen, and that worked as well.
So it appears that it does work, but there is an issue on first play where the menu is not displayed correctly on initial load.
Anyone have any suggests on how to get the first play to work? I'm assuming this is also what's affecting the DVD player / TV combination.
Also - any suggestions on setting up an affordable way to test the PAL DVDs here in the states other than a computer playback?
    Thanks,
    Bill
