'Pan' across an image

I've seen some Keynote presentations and been blown away by the quality and visual impact and would love to 'switch', particularly when we have rumoured MacBooks in the next few days
However - I've been into the Apple Store in London to have a play with Keynote 3 myself to see if it can do one thing that I simply have to have in 99% of the presentations that I give - the ability to move images around.
To explain what I mean..
www.unmannedspaceflight.com/dougimages/pantest.ppt ( 2 meg )
I need to take a huge image like that, and then move it to simulate panning across an image - but in the brief time I've tried Keynote, I was unable to find a way to do that and couldn't find much information in Keynotes help section either.
Is this something Keynote 3 can do at all - and if it can, is there a limit on the size of image involved? I've found powerpoint will just give up with images more than about 5 megapixels or so - and some of the images I want to show are in the region of 8000 or so pixels across.
Any pointers or confirmation that Keynote can do this would be much appreciated!
Many thanks
Doug Ellison

Ok, I played around with this and I think I found a work around. Here is what to do:
1) Choose a solid color background as your theme and pick a Blank master slide
2) Take the image you want to show and, in iphoto duplicate the image and crop each one of them as follows: 1) The first one will be cropped to half of the image in the following way: from left edge to center of image. The second one will be cropped from right edge to SLIGHTLT TO THE LEFT of the center of image. If done right there should be a slight overlap of the image when placed next to eachother. This will be useful later when creating a build-out and build -in of the two images simultaneously, you would not see a discontinuity between the two animations.
3) Now create two shapes as vertical rectangles the size of the slide and place one on the left edge of the slide and the other on right edge of the slide. These will serve as masks of the images. Therefore, pick the same color for the shapes as the slide backgroud (in my case it was solid black). The size of the left shape should be identical to the size of the image that is set to build out. The shape should be placed flush with the left side of the slide. This way, it would completely mask the first image as it goes through the full move-out animation. Make sure these shapes are set Front of slide (highlight shapes and click Arrange-->send to Front) so the images move under the shapes and create a mask effect.
4) Import both images onto slides. set the "left" cropped image with a BUILD OUT of "move right to left" and set the "right"cropped image with build IN of "move right to left".
5) Play around with duration and delay of both builds to get what you want. For example, the builds should happen at the same time with a longer duration on the build out of first image and a shorter one for the build in on the second image. Delay should be able to make the transitions pretty smooth.
I was able to get it pretty darn close to the real thing.
I hope I did not confuse anyone with the instructions.

    I was wondering how I can pan across a still image like you see on Youtube. Any ideas most welcome.

    If you take the time to learn how to use these apps you can do anything.
    What you are now trying to do: pan across an image while text is also moving across the image is not a simple thing to do. You'll need an app that can manipulate both images - the photo and the text slide - simultaneously. You're now looking at an app like Final Cut Express. Bluntly, this app has a significant cost and learning curve.

  • Panning Over Large Image

    I have a document that is 150 by 240 and would like to pan
    across an image that is, well... huge. I'm thinking that there must
    be a way to do this. I imported the image to my library then
    dragged it into the document. Now I can't see the document
    boundaries as it is covered over by the image.
    How do I move the image behind the document so as to create a
    panning and zooming effect?

    The way I did it was to create an onEnterFrame and then
    create a bunch of listeners for the different actions the user can
    take. For each action, like move the pano right, you simply modify
    the movieclip's (embedded w/ the image) _x, _y, _width, and _height
    properties.
    For example:
    this.onEnterFrame = function(){
    forward_btn.onPress = function(){
    forward = true;
    moveCounter = 0;
    forward_btn.onReleaseOutside = forward_btn.onRelease =
    function(){
    forward = false;
    if(forward){
    if(moveCounter <= framerate * moveAccelTime)
    moveCounter++;
    pano._x += -moveSpeed * moveCounter/(framerate *
    moveAccelTime;
    The tricky part is getting the image to wrap around. So when
    you get to the far right side of your image, you somehow need to
    have the image "wrap" so that the left side of it butts up against
    the right side of it. The way I decided to do this was by using 2
    copies of the image and then dynamically placing the 2nd copy on
    either the right or left side of the original whenever it detects
    that we are at the beginning or end of the original image on the
    stage.

  • Panning across PDF documents in video

    My client wants to make a video of a PDF document. In other words, he wants me to take the PDF document and pan across it and show some of the paragraphs while it is voiced over. The only way that I know to do this is to make the document into a high res image file and import it in to Premiere. When I play this on a TV, the words are very blurry. Are there any suggestions to making this clearer and easier to read, or am I going about the whole thing in a wrong way? If so, any other suggestions? I am using Premiere Pro CS3.
    Thanks for the help.

    Depending on the design of the PDF, I'd be tempted to recreate it in PS as a PSD, taking into consideration the differences between print and video, like font, font-weight, Leading, etc. Video, even HD video, is pretty low-rez. Fonts, Leading, Kerning, etc., that look great in print, look like ca-ca in Video. Same for still images. Many trade-offs in Video.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
    PS - if you have a combo of Text and image in the PDF, you might want to Open it in PS and then resize to what you will need in the Video, to allow your Pans, and explore the Bicubic Sharper, and also Bicubic Smoother Scaling algorithms. Your results WILL be better than bringing in an oversized image and letting PrPro do the Scaling.

  • Panning camera causing image stutter

    Hi
    I have a pre-comp set up that is a bunch of images of 3d cutout people and ground layer that is 10,000px width and it is nested in a separate comp with a camera panning across for 24 sec that comes to an end at a logo resolve. Simple right?
    I'm having major issues when it comes to rendering..
    1. When i interlace i get artifacts in some brighter areas of the cut out people.
    2. When it's progressive the image stutters so much that your brain overloads.
    I've played with motion blur, problem is that we need to still be able to resemble the cut out people whilst camera is panning along. I also tried slowing down the pan..
    I think the problem lies in the camera move being too fast and wishing that my eyes would see clearly without the stutter when the truth is that moving images calls for motion blur..
    If anyone has any idea's or any help that'd be much appreciated!
    Regards
    PT

    I downloaded the clip and checked it in AE stepping through the animation one frame at a time using the Page Down key. There is no problem with the motion from the render. Each element moves exactly the same number of pixels per frame.
    This means you have three options to fix the project so that the motion appears smooth to the eye.
    Change the speed so that the stroboscopic effects of the movement are minimized or eliminated.
    Increase motion blur sufficiently to hide the stroboscopic judder.
    Use a combination of the two previous techniques.
    Follow the link Todd posted to learn why this is happening.
    Simply increasing the frame rate to 30 fps greatly improves the motion in your project. Decreasing the frame rate to 24 makes it worse.

  • I'm using GarageBand 10.0.1. Do the built-in drum tracks only come in mono format, or is it possible to make them true stereo (i.e. Left and Right channels outputing different signals, to sound like the kit has been panned across the stereo field)?

    I'm using GarageBand 10.0.1. Do the built-in drum tracks only come in mono format, or is it possible to make them true stereo (i.e. Left and Right channels putting out different signals, to sound like the kit has been panned across the stereo field)?

    All the Drum Kits available for GarageBand are mixed in stereo.
    Logic provides the same 18 Drum Kits also as "Producer Kits", which are multi-track outputs,. Each Drum Kit Piece (Kick, Snare, HH, etc) and also room mice and overheads are routed to individual channel strips.
    Here is a screenshot of one Drum Kit in Logic Pro X with individual Channels Strips. Each Channel Strip can be loaded with individual effects (compressor) and adduced with individual sends, etc.
    What that means is that all the Drummers are professionally recorded and sampled with individual mics. The Stereo Drums Kits are just "stereo mix-downs" for easier handling and less CPU demand. I explain all the details about the Drummer ecosystem in my graphically enhanced manual "GarageBand X - How it Works"
    Hope that helps

  • White Balance Selector Disappears when moved across the image

    Hi
    I am using LR 4.4 on an iMac.
    Does anyone know why the White Balance Selector tool would disappear when moved across an image?
    it seems to change to a vertical line with an arror top and bottom.
    The areas of the image on which it disappears seem to be consistent, in other words, it disappears on the same portion of the image eveytime.
    UPDATE: Since posting the above a few minutes ago I've noticed that my cursor is behaving eractically. For example, on a different image to the one used above, in the library module using the Loupe the cursor changes from a magnifying glass to an arrow pointing to the right.  It does this on the same part of the image every time.
    Thank you for your help

    Weird cursor problems are a FEATURE of the APPLE os.
    There are complaints on the APPLE os system website since 2005.
    The last time I checked there were 30 pages of discussions about this on the apple site
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/os_x_mountain_lion.
    I don't think APPLE has a clue as to how to fix this. It is seen in many apps, photoshop most commonly, lightroom,textedit,exxcel, and others.
    Pray that something happens in soon to be released 10.8.4.

    did so now, only now I'm getting a slightly different error: could not find udevd no such file or directory. I checked both grub.cfg's and my mkinitcpio.conf and there's no listing for udevd ....which I've never heard of, so I assumed it was a typo?
    For clarification: udev is in the mkinitcpio.
    I'm not sure whether I yet have a good intuition for how you have your machine set up, but I suspect you need to include a cryptdevice flag to the kernel in your grub config. The file isn't found because the kernel doesn't know your root directory needs decrypting first.
    My setup is an LVM over LUKS over LVM sandwich. To boot into my system, the grub.cfg contains the line:
    linux /vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/mapper/cryptvg-root cryptdevice=/dev/mapper/vg-crypt:root rootfstype=ext4 pcie_aspm=force acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1 ro
    Now, most of those flags don't have anything to do with your problem, but note the cryptdevice. It tells the kernel it's dealing with an encrypted filesystem sitting in a logical volume called crypt on a volume group called vg. The bit after the colon tells the kernel to associate this encrypted filesystem with /dev/mapper/root.
    As for how to fix your system, I'm afraid I still feel a bit fuzzy about how your LVM and encrypted layers relate to each other, whether you have LVM over LUKS, or LUKS over LVM, or something else. Was there a particular how-to that you followed?

  • Animation in illustrator cs4: pan & rotate across large image while animating text?

    Hi there -
    I have a fairly large circular starmap image - it's a fantasy piece simulating an ancient painted star map with stars, ancient constellation figures, and calligraphic text. Basically a bitmap background from PShop, vector layers with stars, constellations and text. I want to export from Illustrator to Flash a number of short 'movies' of different views of this artwork panning from one point to another with possible zoom and rotation around the image as it pans. I also want to animate one or more of the constellation shapes as the movie pans, as well as adding momentary effects to some of the text.
    I'm familiar with setting up a non-panning animation in illustrator using layers as animation 'cells' and exporting to Flash. But is it possible to do this while moving across a large piece of artwork? How can I capture and export a specific 'view' which moves across the larger image and/or zooms in or out, while also animating a shape or text glow for example? Would this be accomplished with a mask set to the aspect ratio of the final movie which is moved/resized/rotated from layer to layer?
    Is this even possible in Illustrator CS4? I'm not familiar with Premier or AE, hoping to stay within Illy and Flash.
    Thanks!

    Thanks Monica,
    After researching, it looks like Sony Vegas can be used to create a freeflowing video 'fly-over' of the artwork. And then at specific points I can import and animate the Illustrator vector pieces with After Effects - just a 'bit' of a learning curve now...

  • Getting the DW panes across two monitors

    I work with two monitors and have CS3.
    I'd like to be able to have DW across both or at least to let me move a pane onto the other screen. is tis possible?
    Related to this: is it possible to have the Code pane AND the Design pane visible at the same time?

    You should be able to simply drag any of the palettes onto your second monitor.  See the attached image -- which shows an unsolved problem I'm having with dual monitors, but also shows you an example of a dual-monitor layout.

  • Help with panning a still image

    Looking for settings advice/help!
    I want to pan and zoom some simple high quality images in a sequence then export it for web/computer use as an HD 1920x1080. I have tried a number of sequence pre-sets (currently using ProRes 1920x1080 set to 50p (don't really want an interlaced sequence as it will only be still images).
    However with this sequence and all the others I've tried the movement is a bit jerky both in the canvas and when I export. Altering the playback video quality doesn't help and I've made sure I've rendered everything. I've got rendering as high precision and motion set to best but still jerky.
    Source images are Photoshop exports as Tiffs 4288x2848. I'm running FCP 6.0.6 / 10.5.8 and the computer is a MacPro 3.2 8 Core with 32GB of RAM and e-SATA fast raid drives. I don't think it's a lack of grunt in the hardware but maybe I'm choosing the wrong sequence??
    Any help much appreciated.

    From the FCP Manual:
    To smooth the speed at the starting and ending points of a motion path:
    1 Choose Mark > Previous > Keyframe until the playhead is over the starting keyframe of
    your clip. (You can also press Option-K.)
    If you navigate too far past the starting keyframe, you can navigate back by choosing
    Mark > Next > Keyframe (or pressing Shift-K).
    2 In the Canvas, Control-click the starting keyframe and choose Ease In/Ease Out from
    the shortcut menu.
    The keyframe now has a velocity handle.
    3 Drag the velocity handle away from the starting keyframe to adjust the acceleration at
    the beginning of the motion path.
    This causes the clip to start moving slowly and then ramp up to full speed.
    4 Choose Mark > Next > Keyframe (or press Shift-K) to navigate to the ending keyframe
    of your motion path.
    5 In the Canvas, Control-click the ending keyframe and choose Ease In/Ease Out from the
    shortcut menu.
    6 Drag the velocity handle of the ending keyframe toward the keyframe.
    This causes the clip to decelerate as it approaches the ending keyframe of the motion path.
    BTW: the deinterlace filter will cut your quality in half

  • Color calibration across multiple images

    Hi everyone,
    I took a bunch for photos for a scientific documentation project outside in the shade throughout the day, resulting in significantly different lighting. Here are the first and last photos of the day:
    http://imageshack.com/a/img841/4403/94vy.jpg (late morning)
    http://imageshack.com/a/img208/7861/ibvz.jpg (late afternoon)
    The challenge is to use the color strip to calibrate the images so that the colors are consistent in all of them. Note that the color strip was printed without any special attention to calibration, so the absolute values of the colors are not necessarily trustworthy. Also, for these purposes, the paper can be assumed to be pure white. Basically, the idea is to get the absolute calibration as accurate as possible, but really nail the relative calibration, so that the color strip and paper appear essentially identical in all the images. I've tried adjusting levels by sampling known white, grey, and black in the images, but that hasn't done the trick -- clearly a more sophisticated approach is required! That said, I have over 100 of these images to process, so a relatively straightforward solution would be appreciated, if possible.
    Please let me know if you can help, and thanks in advance!

    Move on to video editing apps. Seriously. Automatic shot matching features e.g. in Speedgrade or even Premiere's/ After Effects' Auto-Levels can already get you halfway there by doing a temporal comparison within the sequence, not to speak of sophisticated plug-ins like RevisionFX' RE:Match. They may in fact skew the colors oddly or make them appear dull and "too averaged", but that would be quite uniform across the sequence and then much easier to tackle with a global correction.

    2) Prior to launching ANY others apps, launch the quicktime player with the 1080p pan

    4) Hit play. Shot play wonderfully.
    5) Open Premiere Pro or After Effects and do an hour's worth of intensive work.
    7) Close all the adobe apps.
    8) Open the QT player and try step 3 and 4 again.
    On my Mac which is about as fast as they come... THAT movies which used to playback VERY smooth now looks as if
    someone is having an epileptic seizure !
    Do a restart and it all looks smooth again. Work an hour in the two a.m. apps or other apps for that matter and your are back
    epileptic seizures....
    No matter how much one would like his movies to playback on a computer..... As of today, I have yet to come accross
    a CPU capable of moving 1080x1920 pixels SMOOTHLY over an extended period of time.
    Hopefully, the future holds more for CPU-viewing of Video !!!
