Panasonic HPX300, AVCi 50, FCP 7, Motion 4

I just got my Panasonic HVX300 and just did clean install of Final Cut Studio 3 and clean install of Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro (see specs below). I am doing some tests before I start a big doco project. I shot some coverage on the HVX300 in 720-59.94 at AVCi 50/30PN. I brought it into FCP7 with Log and Transfer at these settings:
960x720, 29.97, AVCi50/720p30, 3.7 Mb/sec data rate, 48kHz 16-bit audio, pixel HD 960x720.
I tried rendering in FCP7 after adding some MOTION4 titles in 1920x1080 and FCP freezes every time about half way through the render.
When I go to MOTION 4 to make some titles, I only see options for DVCPRO HD 720/30P or HDV 720/30P or XDCAM EX 720/30P.
QUESTION
Which option in MOTION 4 should I choose or do I have to create a custom setting or is there a plug-in I have to download for AVCi?
thanks

Thanks. Yes, it is the 300. I have tried various Motions settings and FCP7 still freeze up when rendering or when trying to export to QT movie or when send to compressor. The only way I got one clip to work was to export the Motion instead of just using the .motn file. Time consuming work around.
QUESTION:
With HD and FCP7, is it absolutely necessary to render everything in FCP before exporting or sending to Compressor?

  • Trouble importing from P2 card from Panasonic HPX300 camera

I shot footage on a Panasonic HPX300 camera and when I choose Log and Transfer to get the footage from my P2 card, the warning message: "AVC-Intra codec not found" comes up. The tech support people told me over the phone that FCP isn't recognizing the camera that I shot on. However, there is already footage that has been shot, imported, and edited using the same camera and method as I am trying to do. Can anyone tell me if I am missing an important setting or step when trying to log and transfer the info?

You have to download and install Panasonic's AVC-Intra Software Decoder for Mac from here:
    https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/desk/e/download.htm
Be sure to check out some of the other downloads available there too. You might have to confirm that Final Cut, when importing using Log and Transfer, is converting the AVC-Intra into Apple Pro-Res, as Final Cut is not AVC-Intra native-- at least, not in Final Cut Pro 6. Supposedly in Final Cut 7, it supposed to edit AVC-Intra natively.

  • Fcp and motion 3 with Yosemite

I Recently upgraded the operating system of my 2009 Mac Pro to Yosemite and consequently FCP and motion 3 no longer work. Can I do a clean install of Mavericks on a spare hard drive, install FCP and motion 3 on it and not have any conflicts with the other hard drives?

HHi Nick, thanks for the response. My question however was : can I have one hard drive operating Yosemite and another operating Mavericks with FCP and motion 3 without conflict in the same computer? Any ideas?

  • Two Radeons 3870 with FCP and Motion?

    Hi!
Have you tried to use two 3870 with FCP and Motion?
I just wanted to have all 512MB of video RAM for my canvas and use the second card with my Matrox MXO to display broadcast preview.
I know it could be risky, but as I remember earlier the problems shows only while rendering some of the plugins in FCP (my test was on 2006).
Do you have any experience with pair of 3870 cards?
I've just ordered two of them:)

From what I've read on this forum, FCP doesn't work properly with two video cards.

  • How do I set-up my memory amount for max speed for FCP and Motion

Hey all, I have a Dual 2.3 G5 with (8 Gigs) Ram. I'm working with a new client. I want to set up my memory or whatever else to provide MAXIMUM processing power for FCP and MOTION. Does anyone have any recommended settings. I've maxed-our RAM. My card is (ATI Radeon 9600-128MB of VRAM)
Is there a setting in FCP that allows more processing power to be applied to that application ?
    Appreciate any replies

Most of FCP's speed in performing functions is directly related to processor speed. The only way to increase performance would be to use a Mac with faster processors. Performance is also related to data throughput, so if you're working with high data rate video formats, a fast RAID and/or SATA (or eSATA) media storage solution would help.
The exception to FCP performance is when rendering/processing FX Plugs; they are dependent on the power of the graphics card.
Motion is mostly dependent on the power of the graphics card.
There is no way that I'm aware of that you can speed up RAM. Having the extra RAM will just mean that you can successfully work with more applications open at the same time.

  • Is it possible to recreate this effect on FCP or Motion?

Hi there, I'm attempting to recreate this multi luma key effect on FCP but it is proving diffucult? Are there any methods for this to work on either FCP or Motion?
    Thanks in advance,
    http://youtu.be/Gctf0n8b3F4?t=13s

Yeah - it's possible, but not without some trickery.
    First download and install this:
    http://sight-creations.com/fxexchange/LumaFill.zip
if you need installation instructions, go here: http://sight-creations.com/install4fcpx/  (this is an Effect).
You need greenscreen media. Apply the Keyer to the greenscreen footage. After the Keyer, apply Luma Fill. Select the Drop Zone source well and click on the clip you want to place inside the "person" (or whatever's left of the green screen). (The drop zone source can be from the event browser OR from the storyline [or connected clip -- and you can "hide" clips underneath the storyline.])
Place a generator or another clip (or clips) beneath the clip to serve as a background.
Adjust the Luma Fill with the Levels control -- drag the White Point down towards the black to "open it up". Or adjust the gamma (grey/middle control) upwards to create a mix (and try some of the other parameter controls as well.)
[this greenscreen footage also has tracking marks... ]
You can also use this effect (without a keyer) on "plain" (non-greenscreen) media and with or without drop zone media -- it's a cool way to add a mix of Black & White over whatever you place the clip. [Add drop zone media for a 3-way mix.]
[stockfootage from BottledVideo.com and HollywoodCameraWork.us (greenscreen media)]
PS - if FCPX "freaks" a little (doesn't show the effects in the video pane) simply select the transform icon under the left corner of the view, then click the Done button (that's all you need to do -- the effects should reappear in the Video inspector.) I didn't notice any adverse effects beyond that.

  • Recent Software Update - Recommended for FCP X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4 Users

There is a recent Software Update ("ProApps Quicktime Codecs") that is recommended for the FCP X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4.  Should FCP 7/FCS 3 Users download this update as well, or avoid to prevent any conflicts?

I have one boot drive with 10.6.8 and FCS 3, and a 2nd boot drive with 10.9 and the FCP X Trial - best to avoid any problems.  Everything is smooth as glass at the moment.

  • Fcp and motion

    Hi!
I finished a clip with text animation in motion and imported it in fcp. And as always it´s problematic. In fcp my motion file isn´t playing at all, neither in dvd 3. I have to finish this project next week!!!!!!! Help!
    Mel

"Always" implies you have never been able to get Motion to work properly so it wouldn't be prudent to try stuff against a deadline. GEt out the Getting Started book and run it again. Now that you know your way around the interface, you can concentrate on the format settings and procedures.
"Problematic" doesn't help us help you. Frame rate, alpha, image quality, aspect ratio, color space? Try adding some descriptive information.
Without knowing what you think you're seeing, these problems are usually user issues because Motion only does what you tell it to do. So, go over your settings again and make sure the project specs match your FCP specs for image size and frame rate. Check the properties of the movie you've imported into FCP.

  • FCP and Motion Inegration Issues

I just upgraded the whole beast and I now have FCP 5.1 and Motion 2.1 or something close to that, I am very technical Working with P2 files out of the HVX and seem to have some interesting things happen. I can import all my files fine from the Camara via The FS-100, edit them in viewer, drop them into the sequence, send them to motion to do some keying and save the files in motion. Everything seems great, keyed clips show up great in the main sequence, but also appear as if they are creating another sequence as the number of Tabs in incrementing for each clip in the main sequence. I save my work in both FCP and Motion, shut down my machine and when I come back to countinue working on the project I open the project to find red checkerboards in the viewer. When I play the sequence the clips show up OK with the exception of the fact that I can only play the sequence with a black background and it would be hard to do any other compositing because I dont see the actual clips in the viewer to line up any longer. I also noticed that the number of files in my Bin for this project has grown and there a bunch of motion files that look like sequences rather than clips....
I guess thats enough for now.... Any help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

I figured most of it out myself.

  • Exporting DV from FCP or Motion results in only black video

I'm working with DV footage of a wedding that wasn't shot by me so I don't have the particulars on what camera was used. The video information related back from Quicktime is that it's a DV 720x480 (640x480) at 29.97 fps. My problem is that whenever I send a clip to motion to do a stabilization processing (for example) the resulting video when rendered is just a file with no video (just a black screen instead of video). I also have this problem if I export from Motion using the dv codec. I'm using the DV-NTSC settings in both FCP and Motion. Am i overlooking something, or is this typical behavior? Any help would be appreciated.

    Am i overlooking something,
The most common user error is incorrect export/render settings from Motion. You want to stay in DV, not the default Animation codec. but without watching what you're doing, it's almost impossible to give you more advice. It should just work, and it does, so we are left with any of several user errors.
If you can see the footage in FCP and in Motion, the DV files are good so it's got to be your output from Motion.

  • FCP 7 & Motion - Map tracking

Guys, pls stick with me on this one.
I have a map, which I want to use in my project. I needed to draw a route on it so I scaled the map in FCP, rendered it and sent it from FCP to Motion.
In Motion I used the Bezier tool and mapped out the desired route.
Then in FCP I re-rendered and all looked perfect.
However, my client now wants the map to zoom in once the route is being mapped IE once the red line begins to track the route the map begins to zoom in/scale up.
"Easy" I though. So I sent the unscaled map from FCP to Motion. Zoomed in on the map so I could see the route clearly. Used the Bezier tool to map the route. Then Zoomed out again to actual size.
Went back to FCP. Scaled the map to the desired size over the time of the Clip. Rendered. But the map this time is illegible!
    Confused....
    What am I doing wrong?

    This is the wrong workflow.
If you're scaling your Motion project in FCP, you're taking an already rendered frame and zooming into it. Unless your motion project is much larger than your FCP timeline, you are gonna get blurry.
Do like Adam says and do your scaling in Motion, not in FCP after the fact...

  • FCP and Motion formatting issues with DVCPro 50?

The material is DVCPro 50 NTSC 48khtz. (Item properties indicate that I initially digitized it properly.) My sequence settings are DV50 NTSC 48khtz.
I wanted to create a vignette effect so I exported my clips as a Quicktime (current settings) sequence to Motion. When I was done there I exported the sequence from Motion back to FCP as a DV NTSC movie.
Some of the Motion effected clips will play, look great and then all the sudden I see a black band appear on the East side of the frame. I can stretch it in Motion some but it just degrades the image so I'd rather not.
I'm surely grateful if someone can steer me in the right direction here.

Thanks for the workflow tips and suggestions. I backtracked to my original sequence and found the problem originates there. I have narrow black lines on both sides of all these clips. Since I resized a few clips with moves, I didn't recognize the problem. Now that I'm closer the root of it, any suggestions?
By the way, these problematic clips are intercut with no problem library footage that was also shot on DVCPro 50 and I took in on the same deck.
I cruised the forum for any occurence of a similiar issue and most replies seem to suggest a formatting issue. I don't get it since I think I have everything set up correctly. As a precaution, I also tossed out my preferences using FCP Rescue 5.
    Welcome to the discussions, splotch.
Not sure what is causing this, but I might propose an
alternate workflow. Have your clips on the timeline
as you wish, ctrl/right click on them and select
    Send To Motion.... Click the
embedded and open Motion ticks, give it a name, then
continue. Do your work in Motion, save, quit, and
fall back into FCP. Your clips may lose their
"anamorphicness" on their round trip, but just
ctrl/right click on the clip and select Item Properties/Format..., then
    click on the anamorphic button.
Try this and see if you are still getting the same
    problem...

  • Using still image in FCP and Motion

I'm using still images in Motion (and FCP) and exporting them to Quicktime movie files. What's the best size and resolution for the images and are JPGs or TIF best? I'm exporting for 720 X 480, and currently my JPGs are 4 x 6 at 300 dpi with a pixel width and height of 1312 x 2000. I'm adding some behaviors to the images in Motion (motion paths and shrink/grow).
My FCP project is setup as a DV NTSC 48kHz, 720 x 480, editing timebase=59.94, timecode Rate=same as editing timebase, compressor-DV/DVPRO-NTSC, quality 100%.
When I export to Quicktime the movies are very low quality--lots of noise and moire pattern etc.
How do I get the best qualtiy using still images? Is it my FPS setting, image pixel size, compressor setting? Also, do the movies need to be deinterlaced?
The preview in the FCP browser and canvas looks a little better but I do notice noise (moire patterns) along the sharp edges of the still images.
I've seen QT movies of these very same images (done by someone else who is no longer around) and they are much better quality.
Does anyone have an appropriate workflow for this type of project? The final movies are to be shown on a flatscreen monitor from a local computer, so the file sizes can be relatively large (300mb).
I can post an example of he movie files if that might help.
    Thanks.
    Pedro

David, your a genius!!! You posted your reply on my birthday, and I missed it until today!
Fotomagico is devastatingly easy to use and absolutely makes me want to cry at the amount of time I wasted creating photo slideshows in FCP!
I opened Fotomagico up and created a slideshow, one that I had already created in FCP and had take me FIVE HOURS to create... in TEN MINUTES!!!!!!!!! Aaaaaaaaah.
I couldn't believe it. I thought there had to be a catch or something. This was too easy the quality can't be there... but it was. It's amazing and I can't thank you enough for all the future hours you have saved for me.

  • 2 imacs v 1mbp  for use with FCP and motion.

I'm in need of advice. I'm in the market for a new computer(s).
Let me give you a rundown on my situation.
HOME COMPUTER- dual 800 1GIG ram G4. probably 6-7 years old -i got it 2nd hand in 03 i think-
(its about 6 years old and very noisy and update needed)
WORK COMPUTER- AL PB G4 1.5ghz 2gig ram 17". Bees knees when released almost 4 years ago.
(redering and Motion are getting beyond tiresome with how slow they are).
The WORK computer I do all my editing on while the HOME computer I use for internet surfing, itunes etc. I use FCP for editing wedding dvds, work related videos etc. but I'm thinking of taking a break from the wedding filming & editing business to concentrate on other things. I will still continue to edit and film but not as much in the past 6 years. As of last week I don't have any projects or side jobs in the pipeline but that may change within 6 months.
MY QUESTION- What should I get?
    1. 1 x 2.6 Ghz 4gig Ram 17" MBP at around 3,500 dollars (i'm in japan so about 360,000yen) and then use my AL powerbook as my home computer
    OR
    2. 2 x imac 20inch with 4gig ram which i think comes in at just under the MBP price
    OR
    3. 1 x imac 24" 4gig ram & 1x imac 20" with 4gig ram.
Is final cut pro and motion3 going to work better on the imacs than on my current AL powerbook? surely!
I still use motion1 and that really pushes my computer to it's limits. and the last 2 years have been a hectic one editing wise so I didn't want to upgrade computers during the course of projects ongoing.
(playing with fire in my books)
THING IS i need to be able to edit at both work and home. I take a my laptop with me to work everyday, but if I were to get 2 desktops I could just use external hard drives for my projects (which I do anyway). That's why if both computers are desktops they both need to be able to handle motion 3 and fcp6 to a competent level. and if I got two desktops I could try and sell my AL PB. It's still in superb condition due to me keeping it sleeved whenever not in use.
I heard rumours that apple will be releasing new imacs sooner rather than later as well.
ANY thoughts would be highly appreciated.

From what I've read on this forum, FCP doesn't work properly with two video cards.
