Partial Install of base pkgs upon creating Solaris 10 zone

Greetings,
I have this weird situation when attempting to create a zone. Hoping I can get a bit of insight as to a resolution here.
The procedure I follow is:
root@was07:/root
zonecfg -z was07zonewas07zone: No such zone configured
Use 'create' to begin configuring a new zone.

Now I can finish the the install and boot the zone just fine, but those packages are listed as partially installed, thusly when they are a prereq for any application, the application install fails with dependancy issues. If I try to install those pkgs, the dependancy loop gets very deep.
Plus I know that this isnt the expected results of my command chain above.
TIA for any assistance that can be provided.

  • Cannot create solaris 10 zone with flar archive

    Hello,
i'm trying to configure a solaris zones with a flar archive of a solaris 10 system.
i've followed the procedure described here : http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/content/submitted/branded_zones_flash.jsp
whenever i try to create a zone and use: set brand=solaris10 the commit will fail with Unknown brand Missing document.
solaris version is Solaris 10 5/08 s10s_u5wos_10 SPARC and i have both the Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 container software installed.
is there another way to install a zone with the native brand or solaris 10 using an archive of some sort?
    kind regards,

    Thanks,
I've figured as much as using a whole root zone but i still struggle with the configuration of a solaris10 brand and the creation of a zone config with that brand.
I might be bettor of installing the zone without the flar image and try to copy the needed files and applications to the zone.
I only need the solaris10 brand zone to test the flar image so i can use it to restore the system with flar and jumpstart.

  • How to install MS Windows in a Solaris 10 Zone (Container)?

    Hi:
I am a Windows expert because of my work but I am trying to get away from it at home while still being able to run Windows Applications in their native environment. So I read somewhere that is possible to install and run Windows in a Solaris 10 Zone (Container). Since I am not that experienced with Solaris a How-to guide to perform this task is greatly appreciated.
    Regards

This is impossible. containers are only paravirtualization which is essentially
a solaris kernel pretending to be two machines.
You need a true virtualisation solution like vmware.
I don't vmware supports using solaris as a server. Only a client.

  • How do I get from Branded Zones to "real" Solaris 10 Zones?

My head is beginning to spin! I am beginning to think I have been led down a blind alley.
We have vast numbers of old Solaris 8 systems that we want to consolidate on new hardware in Solaris 10 Zones. We have been bombarded with advice that the way to go is to move it first to Branded Zones, as a stepping stone, and then migrate/upgrade it from there to Solaris 10. So we have started on our journey.
We now have our first bunch of Solaris 8 containers happily installed and running. And yes, it was relatively easy and painless, and the tool support was good. But now what? What are the steps and tools that will make the second step, from Solaris 8 to Solaris 10?
Everything out there hints that it is supposed to be easy. But every time I try and spec out the steps for our teams to follow I come unstuck. Does Live Upgrade feature in this anywhere? (And if so, at what point does my zone lose its Brand identity?) Is there some way to use archives? (And if so, how do I only include the bits I need to move?) Is there something magic under the covers of the Zone administration commands? (And if so, what pulls in my Solaris 8 stuff?) Is there at least some tool somewhere that will capture the configuration I need and build me a new one?
If the answer is that I just define the new Zone by hand and re-install all my applications from scratch, then can somebody explain just what I have achieved so far, and in what way it can be construed as a "stepping stone"?

Correct. But we have now invested in the time taken to learn about Branded Zones, do the migrations, teach the support teams how to manage them... Plus we are paying the subscription for the Branded Zone software. And we still have pure Solaris 8 applications staring end-of-support in the face. We could have made the same investment to re-install the applications in a real Solaris 10 Zone and make them work "properly". All the publicity tells me I've made my migration to Solaris 10 much easier, but I still can't see how I'm any nearer my end point. Here's where your losing it. There is no real distinction between what you call a normal Solaris 10 zone and a Solaris Branded 8 zone. They could have called it something else and you would still insist that somehow one is normal and one is not. There are a variety of Branded Zones. There's a Solaris 8, Solaris 9, and Linux Branded Zones. They differ from what you call "normal" zones in that you basically are adding an OS to the Base OS and are not just copying files from the Base OS. That's the only difference. In all other respects they are the same. The only differentiators is for a Branded Zone you are adding the files from some other OS, even if it's just an earlier version of Solaris.
How do you migrate from a Solaris 8 zone to a Solaris 10 zone. The same way that you moved from the Solaris 8 physical box to the Solaris 8 branded zone. The steps should be the same. Implicite_Order pretty much said the same thing.
You seem to have a hang up on the words "normal zone." Yea I know, you've spent time and money and educated everyone and now your looking for the payoff. As I already stated and has been echoed by I_O, contact the vendor to see if they have Solaris 10 support, if they do, create a zone on a dev box, do some testing, and then create the zone on the real box, do the install, migrate the data. Just as you already did from the Solaris 8 box. If they don't have a Solaris 10 specific version you can still setup a test box, create a "normal" zone, install the app and some test data, make sure it works, and then create the "normal" zone, install the app, migrate the data, and relax.

Your problem is that you can only create Solaris 10 zones. Zones is not a true virtual machine so it can not support older version of Solaris. you want to install. If you need to run Solaris 8 on the same machine as Solaris 10 your only choice is to use something like VMware.

  • Installed flash disk does not boot (Solaris 10 on Fore CPU-50 VME cpu-card)

    Greetings,
After installation of Solaris on a system with a flask disk as system disk, the disk is not bootable.
    Configuration:
    System: Fore CPU-50 VME cpu-card (sparc50)
OS: Solaris 10 (Sparc version, CD-media)
System-disk: ADTRON S35FA-8GC20N Smart Storage 3.5” SCSI Flash pack.
              (configured as c0t1d0)
    Error message at boot:
    Can’t read disk label
    Can’t open disk label package
When I mount the installed disk on another system I can read and inspect the flash disk.
The logging files begin.log, finish.log and install_log in the /var/sadm/system/logs/ directory don’t mention any errors during installation phase.
The logging file /var/sadm/system/logs/install_log begins with:
    Configuring disk
    -     Creating Solaris disk label (VTOC)
    Creating and checking UFS filesystems
    -     Creating / (c0t1d0s0)
    -     etc.
    This install_log file ends with:
    Installing boot information
    -     Installing boot blocks (c0t1d0s0)
    -     Updating system firmware for automatic rebooting
How can I make this flash disk bootable?
    Thanks,
    Herm

  • Veritas Netbackup Client Installed on Solaris 10 Zone Unable to Work

    Hi
I am having problems with Veritas Netbackup client which had been installed on a Solaris 10 zone only. We are using Veritas Netbackup server which is installed on a Windows 2000 server and the NBU server is unable to add the new client for backup.
The way I installed the NBU client was using the manual method where I installed directly on the zone. The zone I've created is a full root zone and the installation seems to be successful.
Somehow the NBU server just can't see the new client. Do I need to install the client in the global zone to make it work? Is there any checks I can do to make sure I have installed the client correctly and that the services are running in the solaris 10 zone side? Any kind of help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Xavier

    Hi mcbrune1
I've check on the services in the client and all 4 services were up and running. Than I realized that this client was hardened a few weeks back. So I checked on the /etc/hosts.allow file and added an entry to allow the Master server to communicate using bpcd.
Now the Master server is able to see the client and everything seems to be working. Thanks for your help.
    Cheers

  • Re-installation of a damaged/partial install of Oracle Dev Suite 10g (9.0.4

    Hi
First of apologies if this is the incorrect location to post - I couldn't find a dedicated forum!!
    My problem is this......
I have followed Oracle's guidelines and created a silent installation of the full Dev Suite 10g (9.0.4) and have used this many times successfully to install to fully patched Windows XP Pro workstations.
Periodically the installation fails and only partially completes....no problem I naively thought - reinstall.
Initially I tried re-installing over the top of the partial install - but this always fails with the error "You have specified a non-empty directory to install this product...etc"
Oracle's recommended method is to uninstall and then reinstall - except the installer doesn't think anything is installed.
The obvious thing was then to delete all folders and files pertaining to Dev Suite....this also failed with the same message!!
I extended my deletion to temp folders, windows\prefetch and the registry......still fails!!
Frustratingly the java installer doesn't have the force reinstall switch that the windows installer has....gggrrrr...
So I had the mad idea of watching a manual install......this generated the non-empty folder error......so I deleted the folders and hey bisto!! Then I started getting these errors "The value of the environment variable path is more than 1023 characters. This value cannot be set."
I even tried creating a response file against a damaged install.....failed with both of the above errors.
Now I am stuck....if only Oracle used a decent windows installer!!
I did think to check the installation on a virgin build workstation - success....
I really hope someone can help me with this as it's driving me mad!!
    Please help
    Thanks in advance

    Many thanks Sainath.....
This has certainly helped......the limitation appears to be in the java installer......it seems to check whether there is enough space in the Env Var PATH and errors if there is insufficient space.
Of course the installer was written in pre SP2 days when the Env Vars were limited to 1023 characters......todat SP2 allows 2047 characters.
My installation script now temporarily modifies the PATH variable, allows the installation and then returns the PATH variable to its original state and then adds the DevSuite paths.
    I can now smile again.
    Thanks
    Greg

  • Help installing Arch BAse to bootable USB flash

    Hi,
I have installed a slimmed ArchLinux base to a USB mass storage gadget (ballpoint pen with 256 Mb) and manged to boot into it by using a simple initial ram-disc to setup the USB drivers and then pivot_root/chroot into the Arch root partition.
This has given me a partially functional Arch base system with an ADSL connection and pacman working, but also with limitations some of whom are as follows:
    * The /dev directory does not have the initctrl pipe and the usual links to devices (hda1, hda2 or sda1, sda2 etc), only the directories with the device nodes (discs/disc0/part1 etc).
    * User interrupt (CTRL-C) doesn't work.
    * CTRL-F2 etc don't open new consoles.
    * Reboot and I think halt also don't work since init cannot run.
    * The /etc/rc.sysinit and rc.mutli scripts seems to run successfully.
Since in my fumbling ways I got thus far, I thought I should ask for help hoping to end up with a normally functioning install so I can operate successfully from my Ballpoint ArchLinux!
    My thanks in advance!

I believe it is referred to as a thumb hard drive or something similar.  :?:
Thanks, I will have a look at this today.

  • Directory Server (partially installed) on ips60

Hi I have followed the instruction "Configuring an Existing Remote Sun ONE Directory Server for Use With Sun ONE Portal Server" from "Sun ONE Portal Server Release Notes March 2003" to install an exteral ids.
I have done the patch by copying the cos-plugin.so to the appropriate directory from INSTALL_HOME/portal/ds_patch/113177-01/SUNWamds/root/var/opt/SU
    NWps/tmp/113177-01/.
After restaring the directory server, I run the ./pssetup during the installation a message appearing as:
    Detected components:
    Directory Server (partially installed)
Problems may result if partially installed components are used!
    Remove options:
    1) Remove Directory Server only
    2) Continue with install
    3) Exit
    Choice? [3]
Is it supposed to show like this? And we ignore the problem and continue with Choice No.2?
I am currently testing Portal to sit on iAS7 and also installed an external ids51p1. All on the same machine.
    Please advice

    Roger,
I have confirmed that they have been combined into one package.
The question now is how can I trick Directory Server 5.2 into thinking they have been installed?
    Thanks!
    Joshua Preston.
Have you checked the Solaris 10 companion CDs? I
looked at my JES2005Q1 distro and you're right, those
packages are there for Sol 8 and 9, but not for 10.
I checked a couple of our Sol10 machines and neither
    r had them.
If they're not on the companion CDs, I'd open a case
with tech support. This is a pretty serious
    oversight.

    Roger S.

  • Explanation of using pkg image-create

    All
Can someone please explain the use of pkg image-create, I've read the man page, created the depot server even installed packages to an image i created using
    # pkg image-create -F -p=PUB=http://localhost /mnt/disk
and have now got an image on /mnt/disk, ive also installed vnc by cd'ing into /mnt/disk and issuing
    # pkg install xnvc
    Questions
    1) Now that i have my Full image on /mnt/disk, what can i do with it?
    2) Can it be booted?
    3) How can i test whether packages installed within that image "/mnt/disk <- image path) that they are indeed working.
I just can seem to find the documentation anywhere which explain the full image theory?
