Partition called "Boot OS X" started to appear after update

There is a partition called "Boot OS X" that appears in Finder when I connect my external hard drive for the first time. It happens only the first time after restarting the system and it didn't happen before updating the system recently. When I try to disconnect it it asks me whether I also want to disconnect the other partition (the external drive's one) or not. Any ideas how to get rid of that? Thank you.

It sounds like you have a hard drive going bad (scraping and clicking noises). If you want to evaluate it, install SMART Utility from http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php . It will not only tell you the health of your drive, but will give you insight into the SMART sensors.
You might run the Apple hardware test. Find the original OS X disk that came with your system that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot holding the alt/option key down, choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. If there are no errors, run it again, as it doesn't always pick up issues on one run.
If it were me doing an upgrade, I would install Snow Leopard, then apply the 10.6.8  combo update, available from the Apple download site. Using Disk Utilty, you repair permissions first, install the combo update (which contains all 10.6 updates in one package), then repair permissions again when done.
If you've had it less than a year or you have Applecare, you may just want to take it to the local Apple store for service, as baltwo suggested.

    Restart your computer
While your computer is restarting, clear all of the applications from the background on your iPhone. You can do this by pushing the home button twice and swiping the programs off the screen by pushing them upwards.
After you are done doing that, restart your phone.
Wait about 10 seconds or so and turn your phone back on. By the time you get your phone back on your computer should be completly restarted and ready to go.
When your phone is back on, plug it into your computer. This should automatically bring up your Itunes, you may get another pop up that says autoplay, you can close that out. That's it. I hope it helps and good luck

  • Inapropriate apps appear after updates are done

I need help! I was looking through my son's (11) iPod touch recently and there were apps on there that were not purchased. My kids don't know the iTunes password, so all purchases have to be approved by me or my husband. These apps seemed to appear after an update was done. They are NOT appropriate for an 11 year old.  I can't simply delete them because when you press and hold the icon, no 'X' appears for these apps. I'm very concerned that some apps in iTunes are not legit because this doesn't seem right. Can anyone help me remove them???

    - The App and iTunes store is ste up so that there is a ten minute window to download something after the passwared for an update or purchse has been made.  From your dscription, it appeared that that happened.
    - It also appears that you have restrictions set that prohibit deleting apps.  Go to Setings>General>Restrictions.  You have to enter the passcode to change them.
    - Look at the apps on the iPod.  if there is one named Cycia, it means that the iPod had been jailbroken and that apps can be installed by means other than the App store.

  • New keyboard layout appeared after update - how to remove it?

    Hello community,
I'm using two keyboard layouts RU and DE and switching them with Ctrl+Shift. After a recent update a third keyboard layout appeared - US. I checked /etc/X11/xorg.conf, /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi and /etc/rc.conf but in all of them there is no US layout. Setting everything there up for the DE and RU layout didn't help, still the US layout is in the layouts list in Gnome. If I remove it from that list, it appears after the next reboot. So how can I go rid of it?

Thanks for your input, guys, I think, this issue has been already reported (quite a long time ago) which is even the top entry of the most wanted tasks: http://bugs.archlinux.org/toplevel/proj1 So the only thing we can do is to follow the comments and to hope for a fix.

I got no messages on the terminal, and restarting KDE or even rebooting did not help. But killing some stale processes did, so now I just wonder where those came from...
    Thanks for your help anyways!

  • Since updating to 18.0 for mac, my scrollbar has been distorting when scrolling; started ~2 days after updating.

The odd thing is that it is an on and off issue, meaning that sometimes the scrollbar distorts when scrolling, and sometimes it doesn't, and it started doing this about 2 days after updating. It didn't start immediately, which I find kind of odd. Is this just a graphical glitch? I'm pretty sure it is. I'm using Snow Leopard 10.6.3.

  • Set up choice of partition to boot on every start up instead of one or the other?

I have an iMac 24", using Mountain Lion. I have partitioned another section to run Windows 7 (64 bit).
My favorite keyboard is a Microsoft 6000 wireless one.
On startup I would ideally love to see the choice screen come up so I can choose to boot in OS X or Windows. I don't want to have to push and hold the Option key on the Apple mouse.
When I go to system preferences I can only choose to boot in one or the other, but don't see any option to have the choice of either be automatic on start up.
Is there a way to do it?
Alternately I haven't been able to redefine or change the keys on my Microsoft 6000 wireless keyboard to act as the option key like on the imac keyboard.
I tried to push and hold alt, didn't do anything. I tried the key witht he windows logo on it, same result nothing. Control key , didn't work .
    ANy suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Francesco De Santis

I installed Quick Boot and although it's a practical way to boot once you are in one or the other partition it isn't what I'm wanting to set up. It is useful enough to keep on there though.
When my iMac is turned off and I push the power button to turn it on the screen I want to have automatically show up is the same screen I would get if I used an apple keyboard and pushed the Option key on start up. Only I don't want to use the Apple keyboard and if I did want to use the Apple keyboard my preference would be to set up the power up so that it wouldn't boot in one or the other partition, it would not boot at all initially, just go to the screen that offers a choice in what to boot with (as if I did push and hold the Option key).
I haven't tried Boot Runner, because I don't want to spend $10 only to find out it runs like Quickboot.
I read a bit on rEFlnd but there was quite a bit there to digest and got intimidating. If it will do what I want to set up I would take the time to get past my "intimidation" barrier. Anybody know if rEFlnd will do it?

  • Boot stuck at "starting version 218" after kernel upgrade

Hi, this morning I ran a perfectly normal 'pacman -Syu', only to be greeted by the notification I cannot keep using nvidia-340xx in combination with kernel 3.18. I switched to nouveau, rebooted and performed the pacman -Syu and packer -Su. At the next reboot, rEFInd booted correctly, but after chosing Archlinux, the boot halted very early (only udev and the message that systemd is starting).
These are the steps I performed:
    1. Switching from nvidia-340xx to nouveau
    reboot: ok
    2. pacman -Syu
    3. packer -Su
reboot: halts for about 2 minutes at 'starting version 218' and then showing horizontal lines (gray on black, each about 8mm wide)
Booting into 'single user mode' once got me a bit further, but still the computer hung at 'starting hostname service'
    Any help appreciated.
    Vincent
/EDIT: to be complete: I also removed packages 'isl' and 'cloog' from AUR (in a 4th step), but that should not have any influence

\hbar wrote:Could we go back to the "having to change to nouveau to upgrade kernel" issue? I don't see anything in the nvidia-340xx package that would indicate an incompatibility with kernel 3.18, so why did this happen?
Apparently, while performing the downgrades described above, the kernel was upgradet again to v3.18, and my nvidia driver is 340-xx. Maybe a temporary hickup with a particular build of one of the packages? It was pacman that notified me of the incompatibility - I didn't go through this voluntarily
I found a bug report for the nouveau-driver that matches my symptoms, so I added my comment: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/42655

  • My "recent calls" no longer appear after updating to iOS6

Is anybody having a similar problem?  When I go to recent calls, it stays blank no matter how many calls I make, receive or miss.

I'm not a user of Yahoo Mail beyond that I can't really do much for you. I think that Yahoo may use Flash in there mail interface. Have you review the following?Recent crashes of certain multimedia contents (this includes Youtube videos, certain flash games and other applications) in conjunction with Firefox 13 are most probably caused by a recent Flash 11.3 update and/or a malfunctioning Real Player browser plugin.
In order to remedy the problem, please perform the steps mentioned in these Knowledge Base articles:

after installing the update the machine rebooted. But only the apple logo en circle appeared. and then....stuck.
a hard shut down and reboot with Shift hold down until the bar did get it in safe mode (or was it the command V) but it freezes there....

Another post did add some light to it too.
Finally my mac started up. Backing up now. :-) tnx

    You might try this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Then download and install: OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.5 (Combo).
