Passing data among nested tags

Hey all,
Man, am I confused. Trying to put together a few simple tags to get some chunks of Java code out of existing jsps. I've read a good part of the Wrox book (Pro JSP?) and the custom tags trail/tutorial, I've got various bits of sample source code, and it's still not clicking. (Part of the problem is the source code is from fairly rich applications, and it's hard to see the forest for the trees.)
Anyway, to get a bit more specific, the general flow is:
1) Query a database to get a list of names of things, say "SELECT widge_group_id, widget_group_name FROM widget_group".
2) Assemble a little form with a dropdown whose elements are the "widget_group_name" from the query.
3) When the user selects an item from the dropdown, we will get a list of things corresponding to what was selected, say, "SELECT <a bunch of widget stuff> FROM widget WHERE widget_id = <widget_id corresponding to selected widget_name>" and pass this list on to a new page or frame that is the result of the form's submit or onChange.
What I thought I'd do for the tags--and yes, I know there are taglibs out there that will do this, and I may end up using one, but for now I've decided to do it this way because a) it will be instructive and b) what I have to do is so small, it seemed it might not justify the overhead of researching, obtaining and learning a 3rd party lib--anyway, what I thought I'd do was have one tag that generated the form with its dropdown, where the list of items to appear in the dropdown was provided from "somewhere else."
The "somewhere else" in this case would be another tag that queried the db and brought back the list of widget group names. As far as the form tag was concerned, the list of dropdown elemenst could come from anywhere.
I'd still need another mechanism (another tag? part of the form tag?) to then get the second list from the db for the next page, but I'm not that far yet.
Basic idea was something like this:
<mine:dropdown>
   <mine:query
      table="widget_group"
      display_column="widget_group_name">
   </mine:query>
</mine:dropdown>Now, yes, I know there's stuff missing--like tying the selection to the submit target. And I know it's not the most general design, but I'm not worried about that now--for me, this is a nice compromise between realistic and simple. That point aside however, I have a couple of questions:
1) Does this design make sense as far as how one tag interacts with the other--that is, the dropdown tag using the services of the query tag in this way? (again, keeping mind this is for instruction, not production.)
2) What's the best way to communicate the results of the query--basically a list of strings--from the inner tag to the outer? TEI? pageContext.getAttribute? ancestor.getThingamabob?
3) Where does all the work go? doStartTag? doEndTag? Elsewhere?
I've read a bunch of docs, looked at sample code, but some of the particulars are just not clicking. I imagine I can get something to work, but I could use a little guidance as far as best practices go.
Thanks!
Jeff

Excelent! At least I know I'm not totally missing the picture.
Ok, this is pretty good. However, I'd do it the other
way around. Use the query-tag as the outer tag and
allow as many dropdowns, textfields et ceteras INSIDE
of that.
Why? Because this way you can just run your query
once, cache the results and then use them for your
input tags. Understood. I think I want the results of the query only to be available to that list. In this case I'm using the query to get specific data needed to populate a specific list. Another list on the page may use the same query tag but with different table and column parameters.
I had considered flipping the nesting order, but for different reasons--namely I didn't know WTF was going on. I've got a fair amount of OO design experience, so where that applies in this arena, I think I'm pretty well covered. However, I'm acutely aware that my tool of choice is a hammer, so I'm wondering if sometimes I'm viewing all manners of problems as nails, when they aren't.
In this particular case, I was viewing my tag nesting as sort of the tag equivalent of
Dropdown dd = new Dropdown(new Query("widget_group", "widget_group_name"));that is, using the "return value" of the query to feed the dropdown.
The problem I have with this is that it appears that things have to be named. I wanted the dropdown and query tags to be completely independent of one another, where the only shared knowledge was that the query "returned" a List of String, and dropdown used a List of String. That works in the method calling analogy above, but in this case, it seems I have to force them to agree on a name. That goes against tens of thousands of lines of Java development experience :-)
2) What's the best way to communicate the resultsof
the query--basically a list of strings--from theinner
tag to the outer? TEI? pageContext.getAttribute?
ancestor.getThingamabob? Again, it depends entirely on you. If you are using
ancestor.getWhatEverAttribute(), this limits your
tags, so that they can only be nested in the order you
defined. Which I think is okay for my needs
Moreso, if you use pageContext, you can use
the results even after your tags, for example
displaying some text as a label outside your form or
whatever. With the ancestor -method, they'll only be
accessible inside the tag, which is fine if you really
want to control their lifecycle and be sure that they
won't "bleed" onto the outer page.Again, I think I want this. I mainly avoided pageContext for name collision avoidance, and because it seemed like a "global variable," which goes against my OO instincts.
Well, for your query tag, you'd definitely wan't to do
the query at the doStartTag() and store the results
somewhere. Then, if you need to iterate over the
resultset, you do that at the doEndTag().Hmm. Okay. First, which tag's start/end are we talking about? Second, why iterate in doEndTag?
Now, if nesting your tags like you suggested, you need
to generate the list at the doEndTag(), since the
query results won't be available during the execution
of the doStartTag() method.Again, whose start/end? I guess you must mean query's results aren't present for dropdown's start, yes?
Actually, now that you mention iteration, that reminds me of another question. I've looked a little bit at the iterate tag provided by struts, and from what I gather, it seems to be a common construct. I'm wondering if there's any reason I'd want such a beast in this situation. It seems simpler just to do the iteration in DropdownTag.java (in doEndTag, from what you say). If that's not the case, why not? And if it is the case, what would be a situation where it's better to use the iterate tag?
Thanks a ton for your help!
Now, one other question...
TagExtraInfo: Docs say it's for when the tag needs to validate something or other, which makes sense, but also to create/read/modify scripting variables. That left me a little confused. We've already got pageContext, so what are scripting variables? Are they things that show up in scriptlets? For instance, if your TEI set a "banana" variable, you could later do <%=banana> ?Thanks again!

  • Passing Data to Nested iViews

    Hi,
    I am trying to pass the data to nested iViews and not getting success.
    In my model I have 2 layers.
    Layer 1 - Input Form
    Layer 2 - Output Table and Nested iView
    This Nested iView I have made it a tabstrip. Now when I select any line item from the table I need to pass these line item values to the Nested iViews Tab1. I tried using the Signal Out in the Out port of the output table. Put in a Signal In in the Nested iView. I am not able to connect this SignalOut and Signal In.
    I read forums that the solution can be achieved through data store in the Nested iView and then connect the data store and Signal In. My problem is how will the Data Store and Signal In get the parameters.
    I also tried connecting the Out port of the Output table to the Signal In of the Nested iView but i am not able to do the mapping.
    Can someone pls help me here?
    Thanks,
    Nagarajan.

    Hi Nagarajan,
    I dont think you need a Signal Out here, you can directly link the output port of the table to the Input port of the nested iview and select the event as "SELECT".
    with the above setup in place, you need to assign all the fields with proper values in the connection links(both in the parent iView and nested iview). also check if you have created the field in the signal in and assigned it a value properly to the input port of the data service or query properly.
    Try this and let me know if this does not work.
    Regards,
    Rk.

  • Passing data between Nested pageflows

    Hi,
    A given PageFlow has n nested pageflows.
    How to pass MyObject among these pageflows?
    Thanks
    jaanjaan

    Hi Jaan
    The link below lists all the databinding contexts you can use with pageflows.
    http://e-docs.bea.com/workshop/docs81/doc/en/workshop/guide/netui/guide/conDatabindingXScript.html
    Since the object "MyObject" could be used in any nested pageflow I am thinking that session would be a best place to put it and access from any pageflow.
    Thanks

  • Best method for passing data between nested components

    I have a fairly good sized Flex application (if it was
    stuffed all into one file--which it used to be--it would be about
    3-4k lines of code). I have since started breaking it up into
    components and abstracting logic to make it easier to write,
    manage, and develop.
    The biggest thing that I'm running into is figuring out a way
    to pass data between components. Now, I know how to write and use
    custom events, so that you dispatch events up the chain of
    components, but it seems like that only works one way (bottom-up).
    I also know how to make public variables/functions inside the
    component and then the caller can just assign that variable or call
    that function.
    Let's say that I have the following chain of components:
    Component A
    --Component B
    -- -- Component C
    -- -- -- Component D
    What is the best way to pass data between A and D (in both
    directions)?
    If I use an event to pass from D to A, it seems as though I
    have to write event code in each of the components and do the
    bubbling up manually. What I'm really stuck on though, is how to
    get data from A to D.
    I have a remote object in Component A that goes out and gets
    some data from the server, and most all of the other components all
    rely on whatever was returned -- so what is the best way to be able
    to "share" data between all components? I don't want to have to
    pass a variable through B and C just so that D can get it, but I
    also don't want to make D go and request the information itself. B
    and C might not need the data, so it seems stupid to have to make
    it be aware of it.
    Any ideas? I hope that my explanation is clear enough...
    Thanks.

    Peter (or anyone else)...
    To take this example to the next (albeit parallel) level, how
    would you go about creating a class that will let you just
    capture/dispatch local data changes? Following along my original
    example (Components A-D),let's say that we have this component
    architecture:
    Component A
    --Component B
    -- -- Component C
    -- -- -- Component D
    -- -- Component E
    -- -- Comonnent F
    How would we go about creating a dispatch scheme for getting
    data between Component C and E/F? Maybe in Component C the user
    picks a username from a combo box. That selection will drive some
    changes in Component E (like triggering a new screen to appear
    based on the user). There are no remote methods at play with this
    example, just a simple update of a username that's all contained
    within the Flex app.
    I tried mimicking the technique that we used for the
    RemoteObject methods, but things are a bit different this time
    around because we're not making a trip to the server. I just want
    to be able to register Component E to listen for an event that
    would indicate that some data has changed.
    Now, once again, I know that I can bubble that information up
    to A and then back down to E, but that's sloppy... There has to be
    a similar approach to broadcasting events across the entire
    application, right?
    Here's what I started to come up with so far:
    [Event(name="selectUsername", type="CustomEvent")]
    public class LocalData extends EventDispatcher
    private static var _self:LocalData;
    // Constructor
    public function LocalData() {
    // ?? does anything go here ??
    // Returns the singleton instance of this class.
    public static function getInstance():LocalData {
    if( _self == null ) {
    _self = new LocalData();
    return _self;
    // public method that can be called to dispatch the event.
    public static function selectUsername(userObj:Object):void {
    dispatchEvent(new CustomEvent(userObj, "selectUsername"));
    Then, in the component that wants to dispatch the event, we
    do this:
    LocalData.selectUsername([some object]);
    And in the component that wants to listen for the event:
    LocalData.getInstance().addEventListener("selectUsername",
    selectUsername_Result);
    public function selectUsername_Result(e:CustomEvent):void {
    // handle results here
    The problem with this is that when I go to compile it, it
    doesn't like my use of "dispatchEvent" inside that public static
    method. Tells me, "Call to possibly undefined method
    "dispatchEvent". Huh? Why would it be undefined?
    Does it make sense with where I'm going?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Bidirectional binding and passing data.

    I started learning Flex and I have couple of problem of which I can't see a clear solution.
    Flex 4 has two way binding, but how can I use it with data type different from strings? I receive from a web service dates and numbers, let the user edit them and send them back to the web service. Flex 4 code generator created all the necessary objects, that contain numers and dates types. Presenting them to the user in text fields (or date fields) is easy, but I can't get such a simple way to send them back. When I try two way binding it gives compilation error because it think I'm trying to force a cast from String to Number or Date. If I understand correctly, the only way to get the data back to the web service is:
    Introduce validators for Numbers and Dates
    For each of the form element, check if it is valid
    If all of them are valid, convert them manually to the appropriate type
    Populate back the original object with new values (and then send it to the web service)
    Is there a smarter way to let the two way binding work the way is meant to be? Is there some way to set the converter to use when binding back from String to Number?
    By the way, is there some simple way to ask a Form object that all the contained fields are valid?
    The second problem regards passing data among different views: is there a standard way in Flex to "share" data between different mxml files? I have two scenarios:
    A view (mxml file) uses a lot of components (other mxml files, that may include other components as well). There are a few objects, mostly data container, that I'd like to use in most of this hierarchy. Which is the best way to share these objects? Do I have to set something static in the root view and have all the other components access them statically? Or do I have to write setters in all the components in the hierarchy and pass all the objects down the hierarchy? Is there a quick way to set up a sort of "session" for this hierarchy and access it?
    A view (mxml file) presents a list of results. Selecting/clicking on one of the results the user goes to another view (mxml file, may be a module), but in the new view I need a reference to the data the user selected in the previous view. The first solution here seems to be using an event and passing the data with it, but is there any other way? I'm looking for something that can cover both this and the previous case.
    Any suggestion is welcome. Sorry if the question was already posted but I didn't find any clear answer.

    This works as expected for me: I see the text "invalid" any time a change occurs to the text in the text field that causes the value of the DoubleProperty to change.
    E.g.:
    Select the default value (42.0); press a non-numeric key to change the text. The invalidation listener is invoked.
    Delete the text. The invalidation listener is not invoked (the text is now "", which causes a NumberFormatException, the double property is "set" to zero, which is no change so there is no notification).
    Enter 0. There is no notification (the value of the DoubleProperty has not changed).
    Enter a non-zero numeric value. The invalidation listener is notified.
    Change to zero. The invalidation listener is notified
    Change to non-numeric text. The invalidation listener is not notified (the value of the DoubleProperty has not changed).
    If you're expecting the text to update to zero when non-numeric text is input: I guess the implementation is something like
    if (! converter.fromString(text).equals(value)) {
         // updateText
    in the binding's method that listens for changes in the DoubleProperty. This is similar to not seeing "1.0" appear in the text field when you type "1"; or "123.0" appearing when you type "0123", etc.

  • Loading an XML with multiple nested tags

    I've got some problems dealing with loading a nested tags XML file.
    Let's suppose I have such a very simple myxml.xml file:
    <ROWDATA>
    <ROW>
      <EMPNO>7369</EMPNO>
      <ENAME>SMITH</ENAME>
       </ROW>
    <ROW>
      <EMPNO>7902</EMPNO>
      <ENAME>FORD</ENAME>
    </ROW>
    </ROWDATA>
    I can create the following table:
    create table EMP
    empno NUMBER(4) not null,
    ename VARCHAR2(10),
    and then inserting the XML file in this way:
    insert into EMP
        (empno, ename)
      select extractvalue (column_value, '/ROW/EMPNO'),
          extractvalue (column_value, '/ROW/ENAME'),
      from   table
               (xmlsequence
              (extract
               (xmltype
                 (bfilename ('MY_DIR', 'myxml.xml'),
                   nls_charset_id ('AL32UTF8')),
                 '/ROWDATA/ROW')))
    so as to get inserted two rows into my table:
    EMPNO   ENAME
    7369         SMITH
    7902         FORD
    Now, and this is my question, let's suppose I have such a “more difficult” XML:
    <ROWDATA>
    <ROW>
      <COMPANY>
        <EMPNO>7369</EMPNO>
        <ENAME>SMITH</ENAME>
        <EMPNO>1111</EMPNO>
        <ENAME>TAYLOR</ENAME>
      </COMPANY>
    </ROW>
    <ROW>
      <COMPANY>
       <EMPNO>7902</EMPNO>
       <ENAME>FORD</ENAME>
      </COMPANY>
    </ROW>
    <ROW>
      <COMPANY>
      </COMPANY>
    </ROW>
    </ROWDATA>
    In this case it seems to me things look harder 'cause for every row that I should insert into my table, I don't know how many “empno” and “ename” I'll find for each /ROW/COMPANY and so how could I define a table since the number of empno and ename columns are “unknown”?
    According to you, in that case should I load the whole XML file in an unique XMLType column and than “managing” its content by using EXTRACT and EXTRACTVALUE built-in funcions? But this looks a very difficult job.
    My Oracle version is 10gR2 Express Edition
    Thanks in advance!

    Here's a possible solution using a single pass through the XML data :
    with sample_data as (
      select xmltype(
        '<ROWDATA>
        <ROW>
          <COMPANY>
            <EMPNO>7369</EMPNO>
            <ENAME>SMITH</ENAME>
            <EMPNO>1111</EMPNO>
            <ENAME>TAYLOR</ENAME>
          </COMPANY>
        </ROW>
        <ROW>
          <COMPANY>
           <EMPNO>7902</EMPNO>
           <ENAME>FORD</ENAME>
          </COMPANY>
        </ROW>
      </ROWDATA>'
      ) doc
      from dual
    select min(case when node_name = 'EMPNO' then node_value end) as empno
         , min(case when node_name = 'ENAME' then node_value end) as ename
    from (
      select trunc((rownum-1)/2) as rn
           , extractvalue(value(x), '.') as node_value
           , value(x).getrootelement() as node_name
      from sample_data t
         , table(
             xmlsequence(extract(t.doc, '/ROWDATA/ROW/COMPANY/*'))
           ) x
    group by rn ;
    I would be cautious with this approach though, as I'm not sure the ROWNUM projection is entirely deterministic.
    As Jason said, it's probably safer to first apply a transformation in order to get a more friendly format.
    For example :
    <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">
      <xsl:template match="node()|@*">
        <xsl:copy>
          <xsl:apply-templates select="node()|@*"/>
        </xsl:copy>
      </xsl:template>
      <xsl:template match="COMPANY">
        <xsl:apply-templates select="EMPNO"/>
      </xsl:template>
      <xsl:template match="EMPNO">
        <EMP>
          <xsl:copy-of select="."/>
          <xsl:copy-of select="following-sibling::ENAME[1]"/>
        </EMP>
      </xsl:template>
    </xsl:stylesheet>

    Hi all,
    I have an application that runs in the JApplet.I have
    to pass data b/w server and applet.The
    datas are brought from the server using php to the
    browser and passed to applet using param
    tags.
    1.Is it possible to set value for the param tag from
    applet?Why do you ever want to do it? It sounds like setting arguments passed to a program's main method from command line after the main method has been invoked. It is possible though to dynamically set any values for any applet params using php before the applet gets loaded to the browser window as you generate an html file on the server side.
    2.How to retrieve data from the param tag to the
    applet in the form of an array.
    In the getParameter it is required to specify the
    param name.
    Is it possible to retrieve data from param tag similar
    to that of getting data from command
    line arguments array.You can use some naming/numbering convention for your params. For example settings1, settings2 ... Then you can loop in your code retrieving the values like getParameter("settings" + i) checking to see that it is not null or empty.
    However, if you don't want to reload the applet (together with the page) just to get some new data from the server, you can establish a tcp/ip connection as elchaschab recommended.
    Cheers!

  • Passing Data to flex IFrame url

    I am using  Iframe for flex  developed by Christophe Coenraets for embedding html in my flex application.Is there a way i can pass request parameters to the iframe url.Initially i was using naviagateToURL to redirect to HTML page and was passing data to the html page using UrlRequest,But due to business requirement i need to embed the html page in my application.I need to know how i can pass data to iFrame on load.I need to send data via POST method since it may be a huge data.
    Regards

    For small data, use the <params ...> tag in the object declaration in HTML.
    For large data you need to use RemoteObject. If you use PHP you need AMFPHP to communicate with Flex for example.

    how can  solve this warn?

    My guess is that you're not resetting state in the parent tag handlers (e.g., data set by the nested tag handlers) correctly for them to work with tag handler pooling. For some more info on this, see an article I wrote for ONJava.com a while back (the "Tag handler life cycle and instance reuse" section):
    http://www.onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2001/11/07/jsp12.html?page=2
    or my JavaServer Pages book (O'Reilly), plug plug :-)
    http://www.thejspbook.com/
    Tomcat 4.1.x uses tag handler pooling by default, but LiteWebServer (which is my company's product, BTW) disables pooling by default. Not sure about Jetty, but it's likely that it also disables pooling. For Tomcat 4.x and LiteWebServer, you control pooling through an init parameter to the JSP servlet in the conf/web.xml file:
        <servlet>
            <servlet-name>jsp</servlet-name>
            <servlet-class>org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServlet</servlet-class>
            <init-param>
                <param-name>enablePooling</param-name>
                <param-value>false</param-value>
            </init-param>
        </servlet>I suggest that you disable pooling in Tomcat first and see if that helps. If so, you know what the problem is and can use the hints in my article to fix it.

  • Retrieve data from nested tables

    Hi All,
    I have big trouble to retrieve data from nested tables..
    From java code developer are passing struct data type to Oracle procedure.. So equal data type in oracle has been created as created as object
    CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE TXNDATA AS OBJECT
      TRAN_ID            NUMBER             ,
      EVENT_ID                   NUMBER             ,
      EVENT_CD                   VARCHAR2(10 BYTE))and create a procedure which has a IN parameter as TXNDATA
    now i need to retrieve the column data's through SELECT clause such as
    TYPE Proc_txn  IS TABLE OF  TXNJOURNALDATA;
    EVENT_JOURNAL_SEQ Proc_txn;
    select  * from table(cast(EVENT_JOURNAL_SEQ));but above SQL will give all column data's but i need to retrieve only 2 column values such as
    select EVENT_ID , EVENT_CD  from table(cast(EVENT_JOURNAL_SEQ))how can i achieve the above result set?

  • Passing data from Javascripts to Applets

    Hi,
    I've wrote a small applet for lists but when I try to pass data from my
    JavaScript to my applet, I get an "Error: Object doesn't support this property or method". I get this error with a select other sites including the page I'm writing, leading me to believe I may not have installed requried files or set required options, though I've checked my settings . I've included the listing of the code snippet where the error occurs.
    document.listApplet.testMethod()OR when I use:
    document.applet(listApplet).testMethod()The applet is loaded by this statement:
    <OBJECT CODE="CustomAppletList" NAME="listApplet" ID="listApplet" WIDTH="1000" HEIGHT="600"></OBJECT>and loads fine but the error persists when attempting to call public method in my applet. Can anyone suggest ideas how I can successfully pass data from my JavaScripts to my applets?
    Devyn

    Hi,
    Thnx for the reply. I've tried as you suggested and modified my <OBJECT> line to:
    <OBJECT CODE="CustomAppletList.class" NAME="listApplet" ID="listApplet" WIDTH="1000" HEIGHT="600">
    <PARAM NAME="scriptable" VALUE="true"></PARAM>
    </OBJECT>But the error persists. I'm using IE6. I did not have such errors with IE5.
    I use the following code to test the applet tag I assigned at each step:
                        if (document.listApplet) {
                             document.write ("Applet Object (document.listApplet) exists.")
                        } else {
                             return
                        if (document.listApplet.object) {
                             document.write ("Applet Object (document.listApplet.object) exists.")
                        } else {
                             return
                        if (document.listApplet.object.testMethod) {
                             document.write ("Method textMethod() in applet has been validated and exists!")
                        } else {
                             document.write ("[2]")
                             return
                   document.write ("[11]")The debugging info from this code at the end of the html document I'm writing is:
    [1]Applet Object (document.viewer) exists.Applet Object (document.viewer.object) exists.[2][11]

  • ICWC: Passing data b/w views without using CuCo!.

    Hi All,
    I am using CRM 4.0, for my custom development i got many custom views, i have a requirement to pass a value from one custom view to another!.
    All my custom views i developed in a custom application, also the workbench is not allowing me to create a new custom controller of my own, in this context is there any alternative for passing data b/w view without using a Custom Controller?.
    or else anyway to create a new CuCo in my custom application!..
    Thanks in Advance,
    sudeep v d..

    Hi all,
    I have an application that runs in the JApplet.I have
    to pass data b/w server and applet.The
    datas are brought from the server using php to the
    browser and passed to applet using param
    Cheers!

  • Can not pass data after while loop

    Hello.
    I have created a VI for my experiment and am having problem passing data outside a while loop to save on an excel file. The VI needs to first move a probe radially, take data at 1mm increment, then move axially, take data radially at 1mm increment, then move to the next axial position and repeat. It would then export these data to an excel file. The VI is a little complicated but it's the only way I know how to make it for our experiment. I have tested it and all the motion works correctly, however I can not get it to pass the data after the last while loop on the far right of the VI where I have put the arrows (Please see the attached VI ). Is it because I'm using too many sequence, case, and while loops?  If so, what other ways can I use to make it export data to the excel file?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Max

    Ummmm .... gee, I'm not even sure where to begin with this one. Your VI is well .... ummmm... You have straight wires! That's always nice to see. As for everything else. Well... Your fundamental problem is lack of understanding of dataflow programming. What you've created is a text program. It would look fantastic in C. In LabVIEW it makes my heart break. For a direct answer to your question: Data will not show up outside a while loop until the while loop has completed. This means your most likely problem is that the conditions to stop that specific loop are not being met. As for what the problem is, I don't even want to start debugging this code. Of course, one way to pass data outside of loops is with local variables, and hey, you seem to be having so much fun with those, what's one more?
    This may sound harsh, and perhaps be somewhat insulting, but the brutal truth is that what I would personally do is to throw it out and to start using a good architecture like a state machine. This kind of framework is easy to code, easy to modify, and easy to debug. All qualities that your code seems to lack.

  • How to pass date parameter from one page to other in BSP application

    Hello gurus,
    In my BSP application i have taken an input field and made its type "date" and its value also of type date and have set showhelp .
    Now once a particular date is given as an input i want to pass its value to next page. And in next page i have to fire a query based on the date entered in previous page...
    Now my prb is that my date value is not getting passed to the next page.
    I have used
    navigation->set_parameter( name = 'BEGDA' value = BEGDA ).
    to pass date parameter.....still parameter is not getting passed.
    plz help me with this.....
    thankx.....

    Hi Eddy,
    By truncation i mean the entire date becomes 10 char including the ' . ' eg(06.12.2006).
    so with begda being 8chars it takes my date as 06.12.200
    as a result my query is not getting executed.
    now i have tried to use a FM  'CONVERT_DATE_TO_INTERN_FORMAT'.
    in my 1st page but still in 2nd page its giving me following error.
    <b>The data that was read could not be written to the specified target field during a SELECT access. Either the conversion is not supported for the type of the target field, or the target field is too short to accept the value, or the data is not in the appropriateformat for the target field.
    </b>

  • Passing date parameter from prompt

    Hi experts
    I am getting some problem while passing date from a dashboard prompt.
    In RPD i have changed the date column properties as DATE only so that i will get the DATE part of the data not the time stamp.
    Now in the dashboard prompt i added a prompt for the date column.
    I initialized the date prompt with a server variable of sysdate
    when i am running the dashboard i am getting default value in the prompt(04/15/2011)
    when i am changing the date it is selected as(04/15/2011)
    but when i am clicking the 'Go' button the date is converting to 2011-04-15 00:00:00 due to which my report is not running and i am getting error as
    View Display Error
    A date value was expected (received "2011-04-15 00:00:00").
    Error Details
    Error Codes: QABPH2PO
    can anyone help me to pass only date part
    thanks in advance
    regards
    Gourisankar

    Hi J / Srikanth
    Sorry to restart the thread again.
    As we discussed i have downloaded the patch and applied to my windows 32 bit machine.
    But now when i run the report the report is running only for the default value(Server Variable) which is specified to the prompt. when i change the date there is no effect to the report.
    When i drill down to the report i found that the date column(is prompted) is changed to teh server variable name which is might be the cause.
    any input on this???
    regards
    Gourisankar
