Password recovery for 2960 without loosing configuration

Hi,
I don't remember password for Cisco 2960 switch, now i want to recover the password. I have checked few documents but would like to know few things before following these steps.
1. Is password recovery procedure for Cisco 2960 switch is different from normal ctr+break then change the register method? As i am more confident of doing this procedure than  using mode button and then renaming the configuration file.
2. If i follow below procedure then hope it won't erase the configuration including vlans information.?
https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11756896/cisco-switch-29603560-password-recovery-and-factory-default-mode-button
3. Pressing mode button is an alternate to using ctrl+break sequence? and long pressing of mode button does't effect anything.
4. Restarting the switch after pressing mode button (without making any changes) will go back to previous configuration (working condition).
Thanks.

Password recovery for switches, like the Catalyst 2K and 3K, are far more simpler.    Read this:  Cisco Catalyst Fixed Configuration Layer 2 and Layer 3 Switches
2. If i follow below procedure then hope it won't erase the configuration including vlans information.?
https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11756896/cisco-switch-29603560-password-recovery-and-factory-default-mode-button
I've posted a link above.  I'd recommend you read that one.  The link you've posted is about someone who wants to make a simple procedure look complicated.
3. Pressing mode button is an alternate to using ctrl+break sequence? and long pressing of mode button does't effect anything.
Correct.  Get your mindset out of the password recovery of routers.  When you are dealing with some models of switches, it's the "Mode" button.  There are no "Mode" buttons in routers, hence, the Ctrl+Break key is required.
4. Restarting the switch after pressing mode button (without making any changes) will go back to previous configuration (working condition).
If you did NOT rename the configuration file, yes, the switch will reboot and load the existing configuration file.
If you renamed the configuration file, the switch will reboot.  Finding no configuration file, the switch will load the factory defaulted configuration.

  • Password Recovery for Catalyst 6500

    Hi all,
    According to this website:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_password_reco
    very09186a00801349aa.shtml
Password will not be activated in the first 30 second, so when we want to do
the password recovery, we just press enter and quickly change the password.
I tried this in the Cat 6509 but found a different result. When I press
enter, it didn't go to console (prompt) instead, it keep asking me the
    password.
Is there anything change in the password recovery for Cat 6500 (I've done it
before but when I try it again, it showed a different result). FYI, i use
this version of CatOS = cat6000-sup2k9.7-6-12.bin
    Regards,
    Affandi Indraji

    Hi Friend,
There is no change in the password recovery procedure it is just that you might not be doing it fast enough in 30 seconds.
Just power off and power on the switch again and then immediately try hitting enter as soon as it prompts for the first password and then follow the same procedure what you used to do for other CATOS switches.
HTH, if yes please rate the post.

what is password recovery for linksys slm224g2 switch

    Hi Kalpesh.
Unfortunately this series of switches doesn't have a password recovery. Only the reset infront of the device.
If you have forgotten the device password you have to reset the switch to factory default to access the interface again.

  • ROMMON Password Recovery for 803 Router

    Hello Netpros.
Whilst attempting to perform a standard enable password recovery on an 803 router, I discovered that a ROMMON password had been set. This had the significant disadvantage in that I could not set the config register to bypass the configuration on startup using the set command.
I've browsed Google and this site and there seems to be some reference to a cookie and/or priv command that may assist with resetting a ROMMON password but this particular router does not seem to understand either of these commands whilst in disable mode.

    Hi,
Yes, if you get this boot prompt with the ">" and not "#" that means some joker set a ROMMON password without reading the documentation what is the impact of that (and not documenting it as well). You have to contact Cisco TAC to clear that password, it's not written in any documentation how to clear it.

  • Password Recovery for Wireless Lan controller

Hi, I am new to Wireless Lan Controller.
I just wanted to reset the password for the Controller. Can anybody help me with this. link/procedure anything will be appreciated.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Jvalin

I think they mean that they can not type "reset system" since they can't log in in the first place.
The key point to be made is that you need to restart the controller. So power it off if you can't login. Then console in to the controller and type "Recover-Config" as the username. This will default the configuration and allow you to start over with a new username/password.
There is no other password "recovery".

  • Password Recovery for Windows XP Pro

I have recently found a Dell computer in my house that is in good working condition. After setting the computer up, I asked the original owner what the administrator password to the login was. Sadly, the owner doesn't remember the password. I have tried logging in through safe mode and pressing ctrl+alt+del twice and trying to log in then. These tries didn't work, and I have been scavenging around for any password recovery tool I could use. On my recent trip to Best Buy, I informed one of the employees about the problem I had. To solve it, he said to restart the computer and while it was loading, continually press the F8 key, which should log me in as Administrator and could reset the password from there. I have tried this, but failed, most likely not sure if I did it right.

I hope this doesn't come off as mean/offensive, but if you don't have a higher level of computer knowledge, doing an account password reset isn't the easiest thing in the world.
Your local Geek Squad, or any repair shop, should be able to remove the password for you for a fee(call around to see what it is, when I was in store it was $29.99).
There are password removal tools out there, but it requires downloading a disk image, burning it, and getting the computer to boot off the disk into a command prompt environment. It's not "hard" but if you don't know what you're getting into, it's easy to mess things up.
If you like my post, or solution to your issue/question, go ahead and click on the little star by my name and/or accept the post as the Solution. It makes me happy.
I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

  • Password recovery for mds

I have never worked on a MDS switch and I am tasked with password recovery on a mds9216. Please clarify the following step outlined in the recovery document. What command will I use from the switch(boot)# to find the correct file to load?? I am thinking
    dev
    dir flash
    switch(boot)#load bootflash:san-ios.img

It would be dir bootflash: and the load command would work only san-ios.img is there. More than likely it looks more like this format: m9200-ek9-mz.2.1.2e.bin
But, yes, you have it in a nutshell. This is a sample of what it looks like if you don't have a SAN-OS on the bootflash:
    Switch(boot)# config t

  • Password Recovery for a GoLive site

Is there anyway to recover a password from a site that is built in GoLive? And if so how is it done. I've done internet searches and haven't found any way to do it.
I have an old GoLive site that I'm working on and need to recover the Password so I can move the site over to Dreamweaver.
    thanks for your help.

The best option to deal with a forgotten password is to reset that password. Nobody should be using old passwords. That is a security risk. Passwords should be refreshed regularly. You can refresh a FTP password by contacting the hosting company. If the master account for the password is also not known, the hosting company can typically refresh that once you prove your identity by confirming the method of payment (credit card number).
There are two ways that I have recovered passwords from my own computer. These methods require that you have at least one program on your computer that can still connect to the FTP site.
One way is to 'sniff' your network traffic to see what plain text username and password is sent to the server. This will not work on SFTP connections (and is why you should use SFTP connections to be more secure).
The other way is to use a password revealer tool. Whenever you see a password field filled with asterisks, there is a password behind it that can be revealed.
Both of these methods can be accomplished with freeware. Should you look for these easy-to-find tools, be sure to get them from reputable sources. You should not want password revealer malware running on your computer that can secretly send your passwords home to the software's creator.

Settings>iCloud...turn everything off here, including Find My Phone. For Contacts, Calendars, Notes, etc. you'll be prompted to keep the data on the phone, or delete it. Select keep. Then, turn off iMessage & FaceTime. Then, delete the iCloud account...Settings>iCloud...scroll down...delete account. Now, set everything back up using your new ID, then turn both iMessage & FaceTime back on, after you've setup the iCloud account.

  • I am loosing configuration when I power off my Cisco 857 router

I bought new Cisco 857 router from the shop. Router must have been used before as I couln't go in with default username/password cisco/cisco.
Well I followed instruciton and reset password to username and password. Now I finally connected to the Cisco CP express over my IE browser.
I found out that somebody was using a router from the shop so this is why I coun't log to it in the first place. Anyway problem is that when I changed configuration and applied settings it remembers it until I power it off. When I power it on again it remembers all settings from that shop.
It reverts everything back: IP address, previous level 15 account and password - everything like after password reset.
I tried it again and it again lost settings. So I found following instruction:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps233/products_tech_note09186a00800a65a5.shtml
I followed it and changed again all settings on the router. My settings are again lost after power off/on. I noticed that when I do first bit it does show
0x2102 not 0x2142 like they think that is password reset mode.
Here is my output from Hyper Terminal:

Please help me as I am stuck and can't go any further....

    Hi David White,
Alternatively, after password recovery you can modify the configuration to be what you want, and then issue:
       write memory
to save the configuration.  You can then verify that your changes have been saved to the startup config by issuing:
       show startup-config"
The only good thing is that when I switch off a router it erase configuration except my new password which I created after password reset. Everything else is getting vanished (ADSL settings, DHCP, routing ) everything. Even new admin accounts I created.
Well have a question to your above comments. I am new in Cisco so please put as much detail as you can for me to understand. When you say modify configuration do you mean to go to Cisco CP Express graphical interface and then connect router to hyper terminal and execute above commands?
Why router doesn't remember this anyway. There must be some option to change in configuration to make thing permanent when I hit apply changes in Cisco CO Express otherwise it is pointless to heve it.
    Phillip
    write memory
    is
    copy running-config startup-config"
Can't this be done via Cisco CP Express or set up router to copy this every time I change this in graphical interface rather going to command line to achnoledge it?
I understand your concern about this router and somebodie's configuration details as you want things to be un-used when you buy them - true. ADSL details belongs to the shop which sold me the router so that is why I don't make a big problem about this. We take most of hardware from this shop and have discount and many good deals with them so I think they have been just testing it and forgot to erease their config. It might be that someone has returned router to the shop and they have repaired it and tested it.
I hope this is a normal behaviour of this router as I have option to replace it in case this is a fault.
Could you please write me step by step guide how can I make changed options stay permanently on router?
    thank you

  • Password Recovery on UC540

    Hi All
Our service provider has left and we need to make urgent changes to the UC - does anyone know the admin password recovery for the US540 ?

    Hi Nuno,
You will need CLI access to the UC540 for this. I'm assuming that it has a password, and that you don't know what it is. If you have the password, skip password recovery step.
First, to recover/set a new password, during boot you need to send a break within 60 seconds which will take you to Rommon.
At Rommon 1> type confreg 0x2142
At Rommon 2> type reset. Type no after each set up question.
When it boots, you'll want to erase cue (voicemail) first. Session into CUE with: service-module integrated-service-engine 0/0 session and hit enter twice. Type offline, then y when asked to confirm. Type restore factory default, and again y when asked to confirm, and press enter to reload. It can take 5-10 mins, and you will know its complete when it says system online.
Then to factory default the UC/CME, type exit to get out of CUE. At the prompt (which should still end in a #, if not, type enable to go from > to #) type show flash: Show more, and probably down at the bottom of the list you'll see something like UC540-xxxxxxx-k9-FACTORY-xxx-.cfg This is the factory config file (don't save to it!)  Make note of this filename, I will refer to it as (but make sure you include the name and .cfg).  Type copy flash: startup. Reboot, you should be running with a factory defaulted UC540.
    Best,
    Charles
