Paste / Move issue in all Android file manager ports

So as everyone here knows a proper file manager is a must for every single OS and the PB doesn't pack one out of the box.
Air Browser seems to be the only free native one but it doesn't allow to browse outside "/accounts/1000/ shared" and the UI could be improved imho (not a fan of how the author split the different operations menu in 3 depending on it involving files, folders or cache... plus it lack multiple folder selection). So as a complement I use Ghost Commander which is available in App World.
Last week I tried to use Ghost commander as my sole file manager only to discover it can't copy / move files in "/accounts/1000/ shared". Then I tried most Android file managers available in App World only to find out they have the same issue!
Here's what I mean:
1- Using any Android ported file manager copy/cut/paste a pdf, doc, xls... form/to a folder inside "/accounts/1000/ shared". Example
2- Aparently the file is moved to the desired folder. Example
3- Now open it... Example
4- Regardless the file type (I tried a pdf here) the associated you will only get an error message stating the path isn't valid... Example
The time I tried this I was moving a folder with docs using Ghost Commander and afterwards it seemed as if I had lost my files (couldn't open them in the device and couldn't see them in my computer when I connected the PB)!
The only way I found I could recover them was:
1- Using any Android file manager copy the files to anywhere inside "/sdcard". Example
2- Using AIr Browser (didn't try any other native file manager since they are paid) go to /misc/android/folder_where_you_copied_the_files_to and copy them to any folder outside "misc". Example
Thanks for the scare RIM! Makes me wonder if any proper testing is done to the apps before these are acepted in BBAW.
Don't know if this is an issue caused by the emulator, the sandboxing process or if it's an issue in the way all the Android apps were coded... But it must be fixed.
As every single bug report I wrote here before I ask any informed user / mod /developer who reads this to send it to the right person and to inform me on how how I can do so correctly the next time.

  • Can I safely move to Trash all downloaded files from Downloads folder, for the purpose of freeing up storage space?

My Downloads folder has reached 30GB. I am not sure why I keep adding files without ever cleaning up what's there. As a matter of fact, what's there can easily be re-downloaded from the web in case of need.
Can I safely trash 100% of the content of my Downloads Folder?

They're your files, so it's up to you whether to delete them or not. I personally don't tend to keep downloads if they are easily re-downloaded. (An exception might be a large download that for some reason may need to be reinstalled.)

  • Final Cut Pro X File Management Issues

    I have several issues
    1. Does anyone know if it is possible to import from camera to the standard Mac file system?  I can't see a way to avoid importing media in the FCP library and I definitely DON"T want any of my media files in the FCP library.
    2. Also I know I can copy the media files out of FCP back into the file system but I am not sure how to delete the FCP copy and re-point everything to the media I have stored in a proper file structure on a specific media disk.
    3. It doesn't seem to be possible to have FCP default new libraries to a media drive - it only wants to create them on the boot drive and the library has to be moved manually.  Am I missing something?
    4. Backup is an issue now - it looks like a change to any component within a library will trigger a backup of the whole library - it certainly does with the backup software I am using, and who knows what Time Machine does with FCP libraries... (but Time Machine DOES appear to delete files without notice when it runs out of space, so it is not suitable for any environment where permanent data retention is an issue - so beware...)
ps: don't EVER use the "move to library" function.  If it crashes you won't get a reason, you can't undo or recover, and the originals may be deleted even though the media never made it to the other library.  This is not good...

Hi Tom:  It was "Move Event to Library" that crashed, deleting the media from the originating library but not copying it to the new library.
I lot of my issues are down to lack of familiarity with the new interface after migrating from the old Final Cut; manuals which are incomplete or in error; courseware created in earlier versions of Pro X and which have not been updated, and what I regard as counter-intuituive defaults and assumptions by the Apple development team.  I spend a lot of time searching for answers:  For instance I spent at least an hour searching in the manual and on the net for a way to extract or move the media from an FCP library.  I came up with nothing.  It would never have occurred to me to search for the term "consolidate".
Another thing that caused me an issue was that I copied a library from one drive to the other to create a backup before I started trying to regularise the media locations in the original library.  I changed the name of the backed up library in file manager.  When I open it, FCP still uses the old name - hence a library which is opened on one disk and appears to point to data on another.  In fact I hadn't noticed that there were two libraries of the same name open at the same time in FCP - the apparently duplicated library was in fact the backup library on the other disk which was renamed in file manager but not in FCP.
In iTunes and Aperture, which both use this bundled library approach, you can only open one library at a time.  FCP is different - and I have no problem with this, but any user familiar with the other products would assume, as I did, that FCP worked the same way.  That it does not gives rise to the possibility of confusion.
FCP is a very complex piece of software.  That means it is impossible to make it easy for a first timer to understand - an experienced Final Cut user has to unlearn as much as he or she has to learn - and all this places much greater reliance on the manuals.  The writers of the manuals need to try and put themselves in the heads of their users and make sure that their TOC, Index and terminology corresponds to the thinking of the user - not the new terms they have created for the new version (e.g.: "consolidate media" - which means extract media from the library and move it into the file system, but who would know?)
In an environment where the file sizes are enormous; a library may contain several hundred clips and audio tracks organised in various events and projects; FCP can crash and "disappear" media; the manual is hard to search and the software behaves in an unexpected manner (library names in FCP do not necessarily correspond to the actual name of the library on disk and multiple copies of a library can all be open at the same time, with the same name) this all creates a great deal of stress.  One mistake and a great deal of work can be lost irretrievably.
However, with your advice, I have consolidated the media files from my largest library and confirmed that the library holds only the metadata now.  However, the new file organisation is unusable, so I will now need to change the file names and reorganise them into subfolders that make sense to me - I guess I will find out if this breaks FCP's links.  At the same time I have to figure out which files in the original file structure correspond to the newly extracted files so that I only have a single set.
My big mistake was to copy the files into the library in the first place.  This is the default, and also recommended on the Lynda courseware (which was created on an earlier version of FCP).  Since most of my existing files were imported in the old version of FCP prior to the upgrade (so already on disk), this meant creating duplicates of all files initially. However, all the newer files are only in the libraries and not in the file system - reconciling this now is tricky.   Since I retrieve SD cards on my notebook in the field and then copy to my Mac Pro, some of the new files have ended up in the file system and not in the library.  I am yet to find out whether FCP will automatically pick up new files added directly to the file system, or whether they have to be "imported" through FCP before FCP can see them.
The overhead of all this duplication is enormous and the inconsistencies tricky, and it is only now that I understand better how FCP Pro X works (and that it can lose stuff) that I now realise I have to undo all of this and move the media back into file manager and out of the libraries.
If you have to transition to a new, and radically different, version in the middle of a project you really need to understand all the implications.  I did not.  And now that I do, it is difficult, stressful and time consuming to sort out.
If I were able to go back and give myself some advice it would be to ignore the defaults, create logical and sensible file structures for all your media, keep all media out of the libraries and use the file structure to force FCP to organise your clips in a logical manner so that you don't then have to go through and laboriously assign keywords to organise them in FCP.
I don't know if the way I work is very different to other film-makers.  This is a doco - typically around 5% of what is shot will make it into the final program, and I double that because I use three cameras a lot of the time.  That's about 40 hours of HD plus WAV audio files.  Some of the clips are an hour in length and impossible to synch between the cameras until they are chopped up and new combined clips created - this is very laborious!  An hour of HDD is about 400GB (more if I shoot raw) - so there will be about 2TB of data associated with this doco by the time I finish shooting.  In an interview I record a separate audio track - and I generally use this as the master track since it is the only clip which can be guaranteed to run for the full duration.  But FCP Pro X assumes that the master track will be a video file and it is not possible to add an audio file to the timeline first.  I found a workaround - but, again, I am fighting FCP and the developer's preconceived ideas about how people might use this software.
Apart from the doco itself various other projects use the same media - but I don't want these projects cluttering up the doco library which is already cluttered enough.  If the media is in the library I have to copy clips to other libraries for these other projects, leading to more duplication.  Its another reason to move the media out of the library and another indication that FCP was not really designed for large projects.
Even just within a single library, file management is unsuited to the volume of files I use.  For reasons known only to themselves, the FCP developers have used a very specific view of the file organisation - and its not the view I use in file manager (which is the column view).  That makes using the file management in FCP very cumbersome - but its essential if you have a large number of clips.  My smallest library takes 30 minutes to copy from one Thunderbolt2 disk to another, so creating a backup before changing things in a library is not a trivial event.
Also, the keyword process is clumsy and, I think, poorly conceived but it is the only way to organise clips if you haven't created a file structure prior to import.  I haven't yet figured out how to erase the keywords I used for one event so that I can reassign the keywords for use in another event.  But I assume that means that if I go back to the first event, I will have to put all the keywords back in - or ignore the shortcut keys and type them manually (which is necessary for much of the time anyway because there are only 9 - a good indication of the size of the projects for which this software was designed).  Also, oddly, there is no shortcut key that I can find for turning on/off the keyword window - which is annoying because it takes up a lot of screen real estate).  It is issues like this that leave the impression that FCP has been conceived as a kind of iMovie + and that it just isn't architected for real-world proper film making.  It can be bent to that, and it has some nice features, but I find myself fighting it a lot of the time.
After all of this I can't find a reason why Apple would create library "files" anyway.  What advantage does this provide over the standard file system?  What are the implications for backups?  (If you are backing up incrementally only the components within a library then how can you be sure any version of the actual library file is current?  And if not, then is any minor change to any file in the library going to trigger a full backup of everything - (in this case 1TB+)?  And how does this differ between various backup options?  Again, assuming FCP users are mostly making home movies, with small file sizes and using Time Machine then a library concept might make sense.  But that is iMovie thinking.  And that Apple have implemented a "move to library" function without any transactional integrity (no deletions should be made until the successful copy is confirmed) further underpins the non-professional positioning of this product.
I hope it improves with age...
But thanks again for your help - it was timely and very much appreciated.

  • Will loading a movie to iPod really wipe out all audio files?

    Hi folks:
In the midst of loading CD collection into Video iPod 80GB. Decided to load a DVD as well and received a warning message that "loading movie will delete all files".
Has anyone seen this? I can't imagine that Apple designed a product that is so un-user-friendly.
Any guidance would be appreciated. By the way, I just learned that I need to convert the DVD format to MP4 - but am reluctant to begin conversion process if loading a movie necessitates deleting all audio files.
    Thanks.

I am by no means an expert but would think that you are just adding the "file", not the playable on and that would convert the iPod into a masstorage device WHICH then would deleate all the musicfiles on it. What you need to do is to download a program to tranform the video file in to a mp4 file and then put it into iTunes and Then load it onto the iPod, that worked for me.

  • Best file manager with SMB and streaming support? Time Capsule access?

Constantly having to jump through hoops it seems, because of no file manager in iOS. Another simple scenario: have 2 disks connected to my Apple Time Capsule. Can accesss them with Android phones, always in trouble finding a good app on iPhone. Any tips? Wish I could also stream my home videos, etc from these disks. Documents 5 (Readdle) can access them via SMB, but not stream, which is nasty for large videos.
    Thank you,
    Roman

I was experiencing the same problem when I upgraded to a Time Capsule. To fix the problem remove all personal file sharing port mapping settings. Then make sure that the enable  file share, and enable over WAN is on and checked for the TC, then update the TC. While that's updating go into the server app and remove any old file sharing protocols from the TC on the server app. Next add a new custom protocol by hitting the + name it file share and set the port to 140. hit the update button and wait for it to finish. Once that's finish go back to the airport utility and find the newly made file share protocol by selecting it under port mapping for the TC. If you don't have the newly made one in there make a new one your self. Name it the same as you did in the server app and set the public TCP ports to 140 and the private TCP ports to 548, make sure the private IP address is set to the same as your server in the reserve. Update the time capsule and you should be able to access both by putting in the appropriate afp://www.yourserver.com:140 for the server and afp://www.yourserver.com:548  for the TC. Have fun, lion server can be a little fussy!

Why is there over ten thousand file in my "All My Files" on my new MBP. I'm very new at using ICloud. I don't understand syncing vs time vs time vs syncing! I simply have not idea how to manage my files now. I read short comments & how to's in the support sections, but nothing I've read so far explains"best practices" or turning iCloud off to get a grip on managing files. I have 250gb fast storage on the MBP itself, and 200gb in the ICloud, one would thing that's enough. The files seem too be multiplying like rabbits. IPhoto's Faces has created hundereds of "somethings" not sure what. I am sure I am very frustrated! Please comment with kindness.

Yes,I am confused. To say its just another drive is a "buzz statement".
OK, for example. If I download a document, song, or photo from ICloud, as I understand, it goes to Download in Finder. If I want to move it to a local folder of my choice on the solid state drive in my new MBP, does a copy always stay in ICloud? How do you housekeep? I have always  used to a physical drive. What is different about the mind set.  I used ICloud to store the contents of my old MBP. Once I download all the files I need, should I turn off ICloud and manage the file locally? I don't like the automatic movement of files when I don't understand the locations.
    Nope, you don't understand it.
If you download a song from the iTunes cloud storage (which is not iCloud) it goes into the iTunes music folder (generally to a subfolder therein)
If you download a document from the iCloud drive it will go wherever you chose to put it.
If you download a photo from the iCloud Photo library it will also go wherever you choose to put it.*
If you move something you have not copied it, if you want to keep a copy on the iCloud drive and in a local folder, you would copy, not move it.
There is no 'automatic' movement, you decide what to store on the iCloud drive (exactly like any other drive) and what to remove.
The iCloud drive appears as a folder in Finder, you use it just like any other, copy/paste, save, delete etc.
You can turn the iCloud drive off whenever you like, download the content to a local drive first.
    * Because the iCloud drive appears as a folder in Finder there is in fact no need to ever download anything to your Mac, everything on the drive is already on your Mac.

  • Find all music files and move to one folder for all of family to access, find all music files and move to one folder for all of family to access

I seem to have music files in various places on my laptop, on my husbands computer and our main imac.  What we want to do is put all music on imac so when each of us logs on we have the same files availabe in itunes, but we logon seperately so we can have different playlists and checked music. So here is what I want to do:
Find all music files on each computer seperately and put everything in one folder one each computer, so three folders total to start...
Move my husbands itunes library and my itunes library from each of our laptops to our main imac, making one huge itunes folder
I want to store our music on an external hard drive, which I have, so I have a full library for backup purposes.
I want all future music downloaded on any of our laptops to transfer to the main imac computer, again to keep one main library
I want all video, apps, books, etc on each laptop to be available in one file on my main imac also so we can all use them
So mainly I want to organize, organize, organize and put everything in one spot so things don't get all messed up and some items are only accessible to me some times and not my husband or vice versa.  We want to share everything we can so we don't have to pay twice. I have read many instuctions, but nothing seems to be helping me and was hoping someone could...
    Thanks, l

I am totally running into the same issue as well. On top of that, when syncing to my iPhone, it took some of the tracks from my iphone and recopied them to the iTunes library, as new files, so now I have a ton of duplicates, and tons of tracks that can't find the iTunes folder, so they have the little "!" next to them.
It would be really nice to have someone answer this question. I didn't think, moving my iTunes library to a bigger external hard drive would have caused all this madness

  • I am backing up my macbook 10.5 to an external harddrive probably formatted  for a PC.  I was trying to move instead of copy and the folder partially copied then said i did not have permission to move all my files.

I am backing up my macbook 10.5 to an external hard drive probably formatted for windows.  it was let me move most of my files.  however i tried to move instead of copy a very large folder (60gb) and it transferred most of the files onto the external hard drive then gave me an error message saying i did not have permision to move all the files.  i am worred that some were moved and some were not.  it is showing all files when i checked for some of them
my question is if i move instead of copy and i get an error message does os x just copy the remaining files instead of moving them?

Typically when you drag files from one drive to another, Macs copy them, not move them.  You usually have to copy them and then delete the originals.
Which files were you trying to back up?  If this involved system files or application files then there may have been hidden files, or files with certain permissions set on them.
If you're doing this as a gneral backup I would not use a PC formatted drive since that introduces its  own set of issues.  I would use a Mac formatted drive and then a cloning tool (Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, others).

  • Extract All Embedded Files in All Folders and Save Each? Copy/Paste from PDF to Word?

I have most of what I need here, but I’m missing 2 important pieces.
#1)  I want to copy/paste from all PDF files in a folder and paste the copied data into a single Word file.
It works fine if I have ONLY Word docs in my folder.  When I have PDF files and Word files, the contents of the Word files are copied in fine, but the contents of the PDF files seem to come in as Chinese, and there is no Chinese in
the PDF, so I have no idea where that’s coming from.
#2)  I want to extract all embedded files (in all my Word files) and save the extracted/opened file into the folder.  Some embedded files are PDFs and some are Excel files.
Here the code that I’m working with now.
    Sub Foo()
    Dim i As Long
Dim MyName As String, MyPath As String
    Application.ScreenUpdating = False
    Documents.Add
    MyPath = "C:\Users\001\Desktop\Test\" ' <= change this as necessary
    MyName = Dir$(MyPath & "*.*") ' not *.* if you just want doc files
    On Error Resume Next
    Do While MyName <> ""
    If InStr(MyName, "~") = 0 Then
    Selection.InsertFile _
    FileName:="""" & MyPath & MyName & """", _
    ConfirmConversions:=False, Link:=False, _
    Attachment:=False
    Dim Myshape As InlineShape
    Dim IndexCount As Integer
    IndexCount = 1
    For Each Myshape In ActiveDocument.InlineShapes
    If Myshape.AlternativeText = PDFname Then
    ActiveDocument.InlineShapes(IndexCount).OLEFormat.Activate
    End If
    IndexCount = IndexCount + 1
    Next
    Selection.InsertBreak Type:=wdPageBreak
    End If
    On Error Resume Next
    Debug.Print MyName
MyName = Dir ' gets the next doc file in the directory
    Loop
    End Sub
If this has to be done using 2 Macros, that’s fine.
If I can do it in 1, that’s great too.
Knowledge is the only thing that I can give you, and still retain, and we are both better off for it.

    Hi ryguy72,
    >>When I have PDF files and Word files, the contents of the Word files are copied in fine, but the contents of the PDF files seem to come in as Chinese, and there is no Chinese in the PDF, so I have no idea where that’s coming from.<<
Based on the code, you were insert the file via the code Selection.InsertFile. I am trying to reproduce this issue however failed. I suggest that you insert the PDF file manually to see whether this issue relative to the specific file. You can insert PDF
    file via Insert->Text->Object->Text from file.
If this issue also could reproduced manually, I would suggest that you reopen a new thread in forum to narrow down whether this issue relative to the specific PDF file or Word application.
    >> I want to extract all embedded files (in all my Word files) and save the extracted/opened file into the folder.  Some embedded files are PDFs and some are Excel files.<<
We can save the embedded spreadsheet via Excel object model. Here is an example that check the whether the inlineshape is an embedded workbook and save it to the disk for you reference:
    If Application.ActiveDocument.InlineShapes(1).OLEFormat.ClassType = "Excel.Sheet.12" Then
    Application.ActiveDocument.InlineShapes(1).OLEFormat.DoVerb xlPrimary
    Application.ActiveDocument.InlineShapes(1).OLEFormat.Object.SaveAs "C:\workbook1.xlsx"
    Application.ActiveDocument.InlineShapes(1).OLEFormat.Object.Close
    End If
And since the Word object model doesn't provide API to save the embedded PDF, I would suggest that you get more effective response from PDF support forum to see whether it supports automation. If yes, we can export the PDF as embedded spreadsheet like code
    absolve.
    Hope it is helpful.

I'm on the lastest software, and my computer is less then a year old.
    Please help me!

If third-party software called "Air Display" or "AirParrot" is installed, remove it according to the developer's instructions, then restart the computer. Back up all data before making any changes.

  • I am looking to "move out" of my computer and into my wife's, is there an easy way to accomplish this task, keeping all my files and setting up a second user?

I just bought a new external 3TB hard drive for this task and want to keep my items seperate from hers for both our sanity.
I figured that I would do a time machine back up and use that to do the move part of things.
But as to setting up the new user on her computer I am just not sure if I can "tell" the computer to only use the new drive for my stuff and only acces the new drive for all things related to that new profile.
More then anything else I want to be able to say that all things that are hers have not been touched/acccesed/deleted by any of my actions. And that I am "confined" to the new drive.
    I hope this makes sence.
    Mr Geef

I have a feeling there are music files in my folders that are not linked to iTunes but can't figure out how to import them without going through all 8800+ files. Is there an easy way to import all the files without losing the current playcounts
AFIK there isn't an easy way of linking up to a lot of dead tracks and retaining play counts etc, except by finding the dead tracks and repairing each link individually. The only exception to this is if there is a simple error in the path that can be fixed by a search and replace on the xml library file, then rebuilding the library. However it doesn't sound as though that would be a solution for you.
This MacMuse tip has a way of finding dead tracks if that helps.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121967
It is much simpler to sacrifice the playcount information and just reimport your iTunes Music folder. Then you can eliminate the dead tracks with a script. One of the forum members has written one that you can find here:

ok, what you're learning right now is 101 unix, which is good. Unix is a good thing
now: the way unix works, and macos (which uses unix underneath) the files and folders work like a hierarchy.
the start of that tree is /
so, if you were to do:
    cd /
    (cd means change directory)
it will bring you at the highest branch of the file system.
    cd /Users
will bring you to where all the users are.
to see whats in /Users you can use your friend ls command
    ls means list files/directories
    so:
    cd /Users
    ls -la
(the -la here means show all (even hidden) and long format (very verbose))  this flag is very optional.
    you will see
    fred
    user2
    for example.
if you want to see the desktop of user2 you would change directory to it then list the files.
    for example:
    cd /Users/user2/Desktop
Note that the files and directory are case sensitive, so, desktop is NOT the same as Desktop, or DESKTOP
    ls -la
you should then be able to see everything in users2 desktop
you could have done as well the same thing in smaller steps, for example:
    cd /
    cd Users
    cd user2
    cd Desktop
this is the equivalent of cd /Users/user2/Desktop
So, for your file, i don't know where it was, but know that if you log in as user2, it will directly put you in
    /Users/user2
which most likely the file you had created from the other user was in /Users/user1
if you copied all the files from /Users/original_user to /Users/secondUser
most likely yes, all your mail, bookmarks etc would be copied over.
    so in your case.
    sudo chown -R seconduser:staff /Users/secondUser
    should work
Remember that if you start a path with the character /  it means start from the root of the file system, at the highest top you can ever get.
    so
    cd /Users/fred
    is not the same as
    cd Users/fred
unless you were in / already
i know it may be confusing at first but it's actually very logical if you play with it.
to simplify, think of it that / means C:\  on windows
you can't go any higher than C:\  (in a way)
if you're unsure which directory you're currently in, you can always type:
    pwd
it will tell you where you are.
    for example:
    cd /
    pwd
    this shows  /
    cd Users
    pwd
    this now shows /Users
    cd /System/Library
    pwd will show /System/Library
    cd /
    cd /Users
    cd fred
    cd Library
    pwd will show /Users/fred/Library
unix can look very scary but it's actually vital and very necessary to do tasks sometimes that would take for ever to do via the windows. This is good learning.
so for the myfile you had created, i can't tell you where it is, at the time you created, if you can do a pwd command you'll know the path,
ls -la  (this shows all the files where you are)
if you see myfile in the list
    do a pwd
whatever is return, the real location of the file would be:
    whatever pwd returned / myfile
    I hope that makes sense.
