Pasting MIDI sometimes shifts position of entire MID track

Heya,
When editing a MIDI track in the piano roll editor, if I select a grouping of MIDI notes, copy them, then paste in a different location in the same track, occasionally the entire MIDI track will shift it's position a few beats forward in the main arrange window. This doesn't happen every time I do it, I haven't been able to reproduce this with any regularity, and when it happens, neither Undo (CMD-Z) nor going adjusting it in Undo History will move it back to it's original position. This is especially maddening as it always seems to happen on MIDI tracks used for drums.
Dunno if this matters, but my setup is an aluminum iMac 2.4GHz, 4 gigs RAM. All project files saved to an external WD 250GB drive connected via Firewire 400.

i think if the duration of the note(s) is longer than the midi window displays, it moves it weird so that it shows the right side end of the notes. you can open the right side of the midi windows wider and paste then drag it back to fit right.
good luck

  • Copy and paste midi tracks

How can I copy an existing midi track and paste the content to another midi track.  It seems that I can copy and paste to the same track, however, the clipboard info doesn't appear to be available when I create a new track and attempt to paste the content.

ctrl-cmd-E does not work? And cmd-1 doesn't work either?
Let's hope then that alt-K works, because that is where you can set keycommands. Any of the presets in the dropdown menu top left contains the commands you need.
I just did it myself, to check it; every keycommand preset there is, contains both combo's I've given.
I have no idea if there's a menu item for the Automation Event list, I guess there should be since there's no • in front of it (• before a command meaning it has no menu item), but I cannot find it, and I don't even know if it works using menu items. cmd-1 should work, always, but it's also under Window>Arrange.

  • Logic Pro when recording audio and midi takes, the regions sometimes become confused. The midi tracks line up with audio tracks.

When recording midi and audio tracks simutaneously the midi tracks don't always line up with the software instrument channel. They may show up on the audio track. Sometimes they appear white instead of the normal green. Any suggestions?

    Hey there jlholm,
It sounds like you are seeing some unexpected behavior when you are working on your project. I would use troubleshooting steps 6-10 from the following article named:

  • Simple question - multiple midi tracks in matrix editor

call me stupid but i am finding the matrix editor window quirky as!
I want to bring up multiple midi tracks simultaneously in the matrix editor but for some reason most of the time it will only show one, then sometimes mysteriously multiple appear - woo hoo! I have tried clicking and unclicking every combination of link window button to no avail. As I understand it one should have the purple link button selected (or no link, but not the yellow one) and then shift select or marquee the multiple midi tracks for them to show simultaneously....why does this not work it is so basic??!! all the tracks are different audio instruments on different channels so what's the problem?
    thanks for the help

You have to read the manual really carefully.
The trick is double clicking: when you double-click in the background of matrix editor, it will show all tracks, when you double-click a single note, you will only see the notes of the track it belongs to.
There is a menu item that says something like "Show only selected regions". If you select that and double click in the matrix editor's background, you won't see all regions, but only the ones you selected.

  • Audition MIDI tracks and VST scanning not working - what to do?

    Hi -
I'm running Audition 3.0.1 as an audio only application very successfully for some time on my Dell Inspiron 1525 (Vista Service Pack 1, all updates applied; 4GB RAM).
However, I'm now trying to use it as a MIDI multitrack sequencer and am encountering severe problems. I'd be grateful for any insights on how to solve them:
    1. On adding a MIDI track, Audition takes several minutes to add the track.
    2. On asking Audition to scan for VSTi's, it scans for some minutes, and then crashes. I own a few Arturia Virtual Synth plugins and have added one freeware VSTi dll to the Audition plugins VSTi folder.
I suspect the delay in adding MIDI tracks is related to an initial and lengthy scan of some kind also. I notice (before I rescan for my extra VSTi's) that Audition's three internal plugins are listed and enabled twice in the plugin scan list.
Overall, I'm very disappointed by Audition's MIDI implementation. It feels like a 'hack' that may never actually work. By comparison, as a pure Audio environment Audition is just incredible; and I would have expected the same robustness from its MIDI engine. Alas repeated attempts to get it to work have failed.
Apart from pointers on how to solve these issues (if possible) I'd be very grateful for any experienced insght into whether using Audition's MIDI multitrack capabilities with Plugins and external synths is realistic - am I expecting too much for this to ever work?
Thanks for your time and attention given to my issue.
    Kevin.

I suppose this answer is aimed at BOTH your posts re Audition MIDI implementation etc.
First Audition MIDI does work, albeit at a "basic" level.  Yes, it always does seem to take a long time for a MIDI track to open in Multitrack view.  Not sure why, but I suppose it's something I've come to expect as "the norm".
Second, the problem with AA crashing when scanning your VSTis is almost certainly caused by one or more of those VSTis being slightly "outside" the strict VSTi specification as laid down by Steinberg.  The same is true of certain VSTs as well.  It appears, and you will find other posts on here and on the AudioMasters forum confirming this, that AA expects full adherence to the letter of the specification.
To help resolve which of your VSTis is causing the crach, the only "tried and tested" method is to remove ALL the .dll files from their current location (cut and paste them to another folder) then return them to your designated VSTi folder, one at a time.  Ensure you allow AA to scan that folder afresh after each separate .dll is moved back; almost certainly at least one of them will cause AA to crash and you will know which one(s) are not compatible with AA.
In your other post you ask whether AA can work with external MIDI synths/modules, as well as VSTis, and again I would have to say that yes, it does.  However, again you have to be sure that each new hardware/software item you are adding to AA will actually work successfully and not cause AA to crash.
In my case I have a total of five external keyboards/synthesizer modules operating successfully with AA, together with a number of VSTis (including EMU Proteus VXR and 4Front Technologies TruePianos, to name but two that I use regularly).  As I think may be suggested by the above, I do have an external USB 4-in 4-out MIDI interface to allow me to use any or all of those external units together.
    HTH.

  • How mute a Single Midi track instead of all when using multi-timbral instrument

I added a Multi-Timbral Instument, opens up 16 midi channels. When i want to mute/solo just one of those 16 midi tracks, all of them are muted/solo-ed. How to mute/solo them individually?

If you have only one single mono audio track then duplicate it (select audio track then hold down SHIFT and OPTION/ALT key simultaneously and drag the mono audio clip down to the audio track below, it will give you a duplicate) after doing that select and double click the duplicated mono track and in the viewer Pan that hard right (1). Finally select both audio tracks and hit Option+L. You now have stereo pair.

  • Mixing down - lost MIDI tracks

    Hi
I have just started using GarageBand over the past couple of months. I have figured out all about locking tracks etc - or so I thought. I can get all the tracks to run fine (real audio and MIDI). The only thing is that when I export to iTunes, a couple of the MIDI tracks can be lost. Why???
It all seems quite random. My MIDI keyboard is connected. And all the tracks are locked for mixing down. (Did I need to have the keyboard connected at the moment when I locked the tracks, maybe?) The funny thing is, on some songs I am hearing all the tracks, MIDI included.
    So, baffled...

You don't need to have the keyboard connected for exporting the mix: and you don't need the tracks to be locked - that is to make it easier for the CPU to handle the load with a lot of tracks.
As to the missing tracks, forgive me for asking, but are you sure you didn't click the mute button instead of the lock button? (We've all done things like that! - and it's worth starting with the basics). Anyway, try a mix without locking the tracks - perhaps that's the problem, and, as I say, there's no need.

  • How do I make fades in MIDI tracks without recording the track first

I have "RTFM";s and spent 2 hours at an Apple store with their resident "Logic Pro specialist" who was also unable to use the transform window to, basically, make [assign] a tool for, in this case, fading every dotted quarter note in the whole song, there must be a Widget wiz out there who could make one that could be used as a dedicated tool for adjustable MIDI fades. Yes, I could bounce[record]the track and edit the Audio file but almost all options as far as tempo, key, etc. are lost-wasn't this the reason for MIDI as opposed to analog? no, the degradation of copy/cut in analog sound opposed to digital mode is the reason, it's a pity no one from Apple seems to care about their own products enough to read these forums, stuck in traffic probably, crying all the way to the Bank. Thanks in advance for all the help!

    Hi,
From what I read in your post, there is a MIDI performance which contains dotted quarter notes, which you would like to fade out before the note ends. Am I correct?
What I have done in the past, and I do this to an AUDIO track... is to use a gate. I set it so that it closes x milliseconds aftdr opening, and closes at a rate of X milliseconds.
So I recommend you render the dotted quarter notes and use an audio gate to accomplish this task.
Or, you can spend hours trying to do it in MIDI-land. And fail. This will get you there in about 3-5 minutes of fiddling.
I have tried before to do it with a MIDI gate, but... they are not as flexible or good-sounding as the audio one.
Of course, you'll end up "losing" your ability to change the tempo etc... BUT, you can always keep the Midi performance, and re-print a version at a new tempo if that is what you need to do. I do this alll the time, with one caveat: I find the key and tempo FIRST, before doign the basic tracking. Then that is no longer an issue. But you can do it any other way you like.
    Cheers

  • Stage keeps shifting position

I'm using Captivate 7 on a Mac (10.7.5) and sometimes (quite often actually) when I make a change on the stage (move something, resize something, etc.) the stage will suddenly shift position so that much of it will be out of view. Then I have to scroll the stage back into position. It also seems that, after the stage has moved out of position, the item I had selected will then be in the middle of the window. Is there a fix for this problem?

Know that phenomenon, I'm using CTRL-0 to have it back to Best Fit, or CTRL-1 to 100%. Never could find out what is the cause, and mentioned it several times to the team.

  • No output from recorded audio tracks, only midi tracks..please help

I've been working on a song in Garageband and suddenly lost audio from real instruments and can only hear the midi from last night until today.  It consists of 3 midi tracks and 9 audio tracks.  I have software plugins or FX on almost all 9 tracks with amplitube or similar.  Things are slow as the arrow is red at the top, however last night I was able to still make changes - slowly.  I was able to do a mixdown and export to mp3.  Then I shut the computer down.  Today I open up Garageband and can only hear the midi tracks of my song however other songs I have work totally fine.  Nothing is muted and I've checked everything.  Levels meters are moving on all the tracks, I can just feintly hear one guitar track.  This is frustrating. I even tried locking half of the tracks and still nothing.  I've rebooted etc and same
I'm running Lion with a TC Konnekt 8 sound module, on a 2.4 core duo 2 MBP with 4 GB of ram

I ran onyx and did a clean up etc then rebooted, loaded GB and same problems.  I turned on the ducking thing, everything looked ok and then once I hit play everything worked again.  I've turned off ducking and it still works.  Could this be a glitch as I've never enabled it before

  • How do I bounce audio and midi tracks at the same time to burn a CD?

    Hi there,
I would like to bounce a song with both audio and midi tracks recorded in it onto a CD.
Despite ensuring that I am doing a realtime bounce (not offline) I am only getting the audio tracks burnt onto the CD - the midi isn't getting bounced to the final output.
This must be a stupid question, if someone would be so kind as to give me an obvious answer I would be most grateful.
    Thankin y'all
    amata

    Hi A,
if you use the instrument (with logic virtual synths) tracks for midi,
    it will.
BTW, why don't you do it offline?
It will be so much faster.
    Kindly regards,
    Jorge

  • How do I create multiple midi tracks each with separate external synthesizer sound

Mac Pro OS 10.10.2, Logic Pro 10.1.1, FireFace 800 (updated), Roland XP-30 synthesizer/keyboard, Mackie mixer.
XP-30 analog output to Mackie, FireFace monitor to FireFace main inputs and FireFace out to Mackie.
What I can't get to work: Sound output for monitoring as I record on each of several midi tracks, each with access to my banks/programs.
Logic automatically set up the multi-instrument and created 16 tracks, visible in the mixer window. I have entered custom banks for the XP-30 and they are working.
Mt problem is two parts. First, my last experience was with Logic Pro 7 way back.
Problem two is that when I create midi tracks (except for the first one I created on channel 1) by control-clicking on one of the tracks in the mixer window I get no sound for monitoring. I can see the green monitor indicator for the track shows midi data incoming. I just can't hear it. It's as if there is no designated output. I have checked audio preferences and see the FireFace as input and output device. If i change the channel to channel 1, I get the sound, but then I have two tracks on channel 1 which doesn't work for designating unique sounds to each track.
I can select "All" for channel and get monitored sound on several tracks; however, they then all play the same sound, of course.
i can create midi tracks (either instrument or external) using the plus icon, but no matter how i set them up that way, they do not allow me access to my banks/programs.
In logic Pro 7 it was no problem creating multiple midi tracks, each with a different sound assigned to it. In Logic Pro 10, I am baffled regarding how to accomplish this and get it all to work as simply and nicely as I was able to with #7.
    Make sense? Can anyone help?
    Thanks

I have it set to Performance mode which according to the owners manual: "This mode makes the XP-30 function as a multitimbral sound
source, and Performance settings can be modified. If you’re
using an external MIDI device to control the XP-30 in this
mode, it will function as a multitimbral sound source."

  • How to change the key of a MIDI track

There has to be an easy answer for this.
I have a Midi drum loop that I am using. I have changed the instrument so instead of the MIDI notes playing through a drum synth it is using one of logic's piano software instruments.
What I am trying to do is change the KEY of this loop. It seems to only play in C. If I go to the piano roll, copy all the notes of the loop and move the notes up or down, I was thinking I should be able to alter the key/chord that the loop is playing. However, no matter what I do, the loop still seems to be in C.
What is going on? And what can I do to easily change the key of this loop?

How is Space Designer keeping the MIDI track in the same key of C
I have no idea. I would normally think that such a thing is not possible.
What is the instrument? What happens if you create a new track, and load this instrument, and create a new midi region, and load SD? Same problem? What about if you do this in a new project? Same problem?

  • The Need Of A Midi Track

Hello, all. Very new to Logic here. Just asking a series of questions to try to continue my knowledge on this program. Here's one: Among others, there are audio tracks, audio instrument tracks, and midi tracks, correct? Okay. I understand audio tracks enough. Connect them properly to your audio interface, and your okay. Same with audio instruments, except they're going directly through Logic, as opposed to being externally generated.
What about midi tracks though? I see on my start up template a bunch of midi tracks with labels on them - Grand Piano, Polysynth, Fingered Bass, etc . . . But, although I know how to get my audio and audio instrument tracks to (eventually) generate sound, I'm not quite sure how to get my midi tracks to do such.
So I guess this is kind've a two part question then: 1) How do I get my midi tracks to generate sound? and 2) why midi tracks at all? I mean don't the audio instruments function as your midi tracks?
I know I'm all over the place here in terms of my (jumbled) thought process.
Anyone please try to respond to what you can.
    Thank you,
    Javier Calderon

MIDI tracks work in conjunction with external MIDI devices, such as a hardware synth or drum unit. Sound is generated from those instruments. If you don't have one of those, you're not really missing anything (Logic has more than enough software instruments).

  • How do i save a midi track as a .smf?

i need to save a looped midi region (click track) as an .smf, not a .mid. can't seem to find that option anywhere.

what program uses the extension .smf? is it another music program?
to use a logic midi track in another program you need to export it as a Standard Midi File (SMF) which has the .mid extension then you can import it into another music program. Logic does not convert midi tracks to any other extension except .mid
