Simple question - multiple midi tracks in matrix editor

call me stupid but i am finding the matrix editor window quirky as!
I want to bring up multiple midi tracks simultaneously in the matrix editor but for some reason most of the time it will only show one, then sometimes mysteriously multiple appear - woo hoo! I have tried clicking and unclicking every combination of link window button to no avail. As I understand it one should have the purple link button selected (or no link, but not the yellow one) and then shift select or marquee the multiple midi tracks for them to show simultaneously....why does this not work it is so basic??!! all the tracks are different audio instruments on different channels so what's the problem?
thanks for the help

You have to read the manual really carefully.
The trick is double clicking: when you double-click in the background of matrix editor, it will show all tracks, when you double-click a single note, you will only see the notes of the track it belongs to.
There is a menu item that says something like "Show only selected regions". If you select that and double click in the matrix editor's background, you won't see all regions, but only the ones you selected.

  • Multiple MIDI tracks to one instrument?

    The plugin is Ultrabeat.
I like putting the kick onto one MIDI track
the snare into another MIDI track,
    hats on another, etc....
Problem is, all of the MIDI tracks that route to the Ultrabeat
are the actual instrument track that has the plugin inserted onto it.
So MUTING one track mutes all the audio coming out of
    the Ultrabeat Instrument track.
An attempt at a workaround is: create a Multi-instrument
in the Environment, and connect it to the Ultrabeat.
But then MUTING the MIDI tracks doesn't do anything.
The MIDI tracks play even when MUTED.
So I'm guessing Region Muting is the way we do it?
Selecting individual regions for muting and solo-ing
instead of muting and soloing the track ?
So..the MUTE button on a MIDI track is there for...NO REASON.
It's just a button that doesn't do anything.
Well.. this MIDI track has muted and non-muted regions on it.
I guess I'll need to remember which ones are muted and which
    are not ?
This couldn't possibly have been something that was thought over
    and planned.
Nobody in their right mind would design it this way on purpose.
A solution would be to allow MIDI tracks to be MUTED using the 'M' button

Are you talking about MIDI track on external MIDI?
your question seems to be related with Instrument tracks...
there many Muting possibilities in Logic...
I suggest to read the manual serch for "mute track"
As you can see in the manual there are tons of pages and paragraphs about MUTE function in Logic Pro... so I cannot explain all the way to MUTE a Midi or Audio
I can only say that Instruments tracks are not the same as External MIDI track device... *but Muting Instrument track is very similar as Audio and Midi mixed together functions*
'cause the Instruments channels strips are AUDIO CHANNELs STRIPs!
Maybe the following pictures can help
Try to change setting with the one shown below
CPU-savings is not the correct therm and maybe this is caused of misunderstanding...
this set allow you to individually mute the duplicate tracks...
_+The "M" button that you are metioned in your post will works as you need.+_
I'm trying to replay to the O.P question
multiple MIDI tracks to one instrument?
if you need to mute individually tracks of a single instrument the last pictures shows the best setting to achieve the result that you are looking for.

  • How do I create multiple midi tracks each with separate external synthesizer sound

Mac Pro OS 10.10.2, Logic Pro 10.1.1, FireFace 800 (updated), Roland XP-30 synthesizer/keyboard, Mackie mixer.
XP-30 analog output to Mackie, FireFace monitor to FireFace main inputs and FireFace out to Mackie.
What I can't get to work: Sound output for monitoring as I record on each of several midi tracks, each with access to my banks/programs.
Logic automatically set up the multi-instrument and created 16 tracks, visible in the mixer window. I have entered custom banks for the XP-30 and they are working.
Mt problem is two parts. First, my last experience was with Logic Pro 7 way back.
Problem two is that when I create midi tracks (except for the first one I created on channel 1) by control-clicking on one of the tracks in the mixer window I get no sound for monitoring. I can see the green monitor indicator for the track shows midi data incoming. I just can't hear it. It's as if there is no designated output. I have checked audio preferences and see the FireFace as input and output device. If i change the channel to channel 1, I get the sound, but then I have two tracks on channel 1 which doesn't work for designating unique sounds to each track.
I can select "All" for channel and get monitored sound on several tracks; however, they then all play the same sound, of course.
i can create midi tracks (either instrument or external) using the plus icon, but no matter how i set them up that way, they do not allow me access to my banks/programs.
In logic Pro 7 it was no problem creating multiple midi tracks, each with a different sound assigned to it. In Logic Pro 10, I am baffled regarding how to accomplish this and get it all to work as simply and nicely as I was able to with #7.
    Make sense? Can anyone help?
    Thanks

I have it set to Performance mode which according to the owners manual: "This mode makes the XP-30 function as a multitimbral sound
source, and Performance settings can be modified. If you’re
using an external MIDI device to control the XP-30 in this
mode, it will function as a multitimbral sound source."

  • How to record multiple midi channel data to multiple midi tracks in Logic?

    Dear All,
I have an electric organ from Yamaha, and it has 3 keyboards, upper keyboard, lower keyboard, and pedal keyboard. They are all running in different midi channels:
i.e. upper keyboard: midi channel 1
    lower keyboard: midi channel 2
    pedal keyboard: midi channel 3
When I try to create 3 midi tracks in Logic to listen to the 3 keyboards, I found that their midi signal just mixed together. Meaning, all 3 midi tracks can listen to all 3 keyboards...
Please noted that I am using a single USB Midi interface (1-in, 1-out) to connect the electric organ with macbook.
Can someone give me a help here? I suppose I can setup 3 midi tracks in logic to listen to 3 keyboards signal separately.
    Thanks,
    Eric

Be aware that the Settings are song specific, compared to Preferences, which apply
to all songs. Set your controllers to send on specific MIDI channels and set the same channels in the inspector of your tracks.
I have a 2x2 midisport however, so I don't know if you will have an issue because you have only 1 I/O.
If so, you might have to learn about 'Multi instruments", I haven't had the need.
Yes, this is correct. We have two recording stations with ESI M4U 4x4 midi interfaces. We are recording 4 instruments at the same time and they all send their data on a different channel. I created midi instruments for all of them in Environment just to have them more easily available in the Arrange window. Also make sure you have the correct midi channel set per track in Logic.
When the option to "auto demix by channel" is set and you are recording, it may seem that Logic is recording only on one channel (only one region being created). But as soon as you hit stop, it will expand to multiple channels.

  • View multiple regions inside one Matrix Editor?

How, or can it be done ?
I want to look at the content of more than one region inside one matrix editor.
    It actually happened once accidentally.
    How is this done?

    Phlange,
After you double click the background of the Matrix Editor (as mentioned above), go to the Matrix editor's "View" menu and select the "Show Selected Regions Only" option. (I found it on p.473 of the LP7 Reference PDF.)
Now when you select regions in the Arrange and open the Matrix editor, double clicking the background of the Matrix editor will show only the notes from the selected Regions.
    Hope this helps out,

  • Multiple MIDI takes on the same track - can only find one in the editor?

After making several passes on an instrument track w/drum sampler on it I opened the piano roll editor to edit the data only to find only one of the passes represented there. I could only find the other passes when I moved the current one out of the track temporarily. There must be a better way to do this, can anyone hip me to the right way to edit all the data in the multiple passes at the same time? I can hear all the data, I just can't see all of it.
I'm doing this so I only have to instantiate the Virtual Instrument once in the session, CPU is always at a premium these days. I have done the bulk of my work in recent years in ProTools but I have found Logic Express 8 to be far more efficient with CPU load on my core 2 duo Macbook. I suspect I'm just missing something but I cannot seem to figure it out. Help?

I appreciate your comments but my issue was in editing the already recorded tracks. If you can find in those pages where it shows how to view all the data from the already recorded multiple MIDI tracks at the same time in the piano roll window and be able to edit them I'd be much obliged if you would point those out to me. I double checked your recommendation after reading your first reply, the answer I needed was not there.
Evidently you can only select and view one region at a time no matter how many there are in the same track. I have searched the LE 8 pdf manual and also searched thru an Apple Logic Pro Training series book for version 7 JIC it had some additional insight into this particular issue and came up empty, that's why I was asking for additional insight on this panel. I always go to the documentation first - RTFM is first call for me.
I've already figured the workaround and I'll know better next time to allow Logic to create its own multiple take folders so as far as I'm concerned this case is closed. Thank you again for your input.

  • Matrix Editor & Multiple Regions: Moving Note Start Earlier Doesn't Work

    Hi,
When viewing multiple regions in the Matrix editor, I can't move the start time of a note to the left (leaving the end position the same). This move works just fine when viewing a single region in Matrix.
Funny thing is that although the note won't budge, the move is listed in the Undo History as "Undo Left Corner Change".
Feels like a bug, but before I go there...
Can anyone confirm this behavior? It would be great to know if it happens in 7.1.1 as well as 7.2.3.
    Best,
    -=iS=-

    MS,
Thanks for correctly pronouncing my name! LOL!
Wouldnt dragging the note or notes to an
earlier starting place and lengthen the right hand
side give you operation you wanted?
Yes, indeed it would. But then I'd have to remember where the ending should be.
Wait a second... (think, think, think...)
Ah, yes, I could slice the note in two, leaving the end piece as a place marker, move the first piece backwards to where I want it to start, then glue the two pieces together.
Good suggestion! Thanks for that. (DING! DING! DING!)

  • Workflow Suggestions for Getting Multiple Audio Tracks From Drum Machine

My goal is to make separate audio tracks from the MIDI output coming out of a hardware Boss DR-880 drum machine. It has nice drum samples that I would like to use. So far, I know how to split the output by MIDI notes as to create multiple tracks. I end up with a about 10 tracks which are all MIDI of course. What I want to do is end up with all audio tracks. This way I can set the levels and EQ to taste for each part of the drum kit.
What's the most straightforward way to achieve this goal? I tried bouncing in place but that only works for plugins -it's grayed-out for the post note split generated MID tracks. I also found a post on this forum with what I think is similar question but it's closed and the question was not clearly answered for a newbie like me.
So far I can do this:
    1. Record the MIDI output from the drum machine to an External MIDI track.
    2. I then split the MIDI track by note to get multiple MIDI tracks.
    3. To get audio I play each track individually e.g., just the kick drum and record the audio coming
out of the drum machine into an audio track.
This is a huge pain since I have on average about 10 MIDI tracks! There has to be a better way, right?
    Thanks!

    hi there:
ok now when u want to do such a thing which i totally understand what u are trying to do !so u have these options L
1- u should have a mixer to feed it with all your outputs from outboard gears like drum machines ,samplers etc...coz what u like in your dr-880 is the character of its sound and trust me if i tell you even if u tried to sample it and put it into any sampler software ,it will have the same sound but not the same character ! so thats why we still have samplers and out board gears and they will be still manufactured coz of that reason ...so for example i use my akai s6000 sampler which it has 16 outputs direct to my mixer so i can do what ever i want midi wise and audio wise with out any pain ,coz even if i have the same samples into my whatever sampler software i will never have the color and the character of the sound coming out from my akai ...and i use a drum machine which it has 10 outs as well and all is playing in sync in real trime with my audio tracks inside my logic ...this is the best solution !but i think u dont have that solution but u have to think about it if u bring a good console..!
2- you don't have to divide your midi from your machine you just do what ever its need to be done and when u finish record them one by one into your logic or 2 by 2 or what ever but in this case u cant control the midi of it anymore
but you gonna pain to do that every time coz sometime u dont have much time to think about u have to record the sound before any mix down!but it will work for you
3- make samples by your own of your drum machine and use esx24 to play them !but again you gonna lose the character of your sound but still having the same sounds u want ( if u know how do make a good samples).
i hope this tips gonna be useful for you .
    cheers..!:)

  • Multiple instrument tracks routed to ONE instance of Kontakt?

I've got a Kontakt 3 sampler fully loaded with different instruments, routed to separate midi channels. But I can't seem to figure out how to assign multiple midi tracks in the arrange window to these separate instruments within Kontakt! In Cubase this is easy when you can actually chose one of the active VSTi's when you select an instrument for a midi track, what is the corresponding way in logic?
    Thanks!!
    /Erik

Well if you do it right it will create a Multitimbral instance of Kontakt....
hit "+" ->Software Instrument-> check the box "Multitimbral" - choose amount of Midi channels->read the manual...

  • Saving multiple Midi takes

Is it possible to record a midi part, do it again and compare the two? Similar to what can be done with audio in LP8? I want to record a part several times, alternate riffs, etc and choose the best.

  • Viewing two matrix editor windows for two different tracks

I would like to work on multiple tracks at the same time using the matrix editor. I can only create multiple matix editor windows of the same track. An answer to this question would be very helpful.

  • How to get multiple midi inputs to stick to tracks and not translate

Hi.. i'm trying to get the following to work:
I have two midi devices.. One on channel 1 and one on channel 13. They are coming in via different ports.
I want to make it so Channel 1 only goes to the track for channel 1, and outputs on channel 1.. and channel 13 only goes to the track for channel 13 and outputs on channel 13..
instead, what i am getting is: if channel 1 track is selected, all input from channel 13 is translated to channel 1. i need channel 13 to stay on channel 13.
i'm new to logic and don't fully understand Environment, but havent been able to figure this out, and its critical for my use that the second keyboard always send through on its correct channel, even if i'm recording on another track. ideally i'd be able to arm both tracks and record with the inputs correctly separated and no translation..
    can someone please help?

I ended up making a really complex MIDI patching mixer in the environment to solve this problem, but a simple solution exists:
    1) Create a Multi-Intrument (Turn the Port: Off, make sure the box is Checked next to Icon and activate all Channels) in the environment layer that houses your Physical Input.
    2) Wire the SUM of the Physical Input to the new Multi-Intrument
3a) Wire the Multi-Instrument to the Sequencer Input
3b) Wire the next node of the Multi Instrument to a Splitter
    4) Wire corresponding channels to your object of choice (either a MIDI Instrument or Audio Instrument)
    5) Goto you arrange and create tracks for the Multi-Instrument you made (just as you would for an outboard synth)
    6) Goto your Recording Prefs (option + R, I think) and check 'Auto Demix by channel....'
    7) Arm the Multi Instrument, and press record...
    8) Play both keyboards and they multitrack record (FYI!!! When recording, make sure you have one of the MIDI tracks selected---during the recording, it will come in as one region, but once the recording is stopped it will demix them to the appropriate tracks)
You can download the environment layer I made to do this here to help you out if you get lost. (It just has a lot of stuff you may not need.)
    Good Luck!

  • Question about multiple audio tracks

    Hello,
I see that imovie has only 2 audio tracks available when creating a movie. I need more than two since I will be working with a voiceover track, a soundtrack and at least one background/environment track all at one time. I won't be able to use the sound recorded with the video so that "track" is not an option.
My question is; Am I out of luck here and need to spend the 1K for studio pro to add more multiple audio tracks?
Also, I tried working with garageband but since all of my audio tracks import in at a minimum of 40 beats per minute, the voiceovers are all sped up and sound chipmunky.
    Thanks for any help!

Well I didn't mean to irritate you...LOL And yes, I realize that this is the iM 6 forum but the gist of my question was related to multiple audio tracks in iM and thought I would ask about it in the forum pertaining to the latest release.
I had already posted a question in the GB forum regarding the bpm problem and found no answers so I was pretty much about to shelve that idea and forgo the whole garageband thing; this without knowing about the new "swap" features. I just updated to iM 6 yesterday.
As far as the "on-tape" raw audios: I was working on my movie in iM4. I wanted to add more audio bits but I don't have a proper mic for my G5 so I recorded the audio bits on dv8 tape through my camcorder. I imported the video (the image was the inside of my lens cap!), extracted the audio, took those audio files and imported them into GarageBand. That's when I noticed the bpm problem.
I'm sorry about the lack of info I originally gave but like I said, I had pretty much gave up on the idea of using GarageBand. I'm pretty new at this and I'm trying to decide what I need in terms of software to get what I want out of my movie. I'd be willing to pay for FCxp but still looking into whether I need to do just that or whether I can get by by using imovie and now it looks like GarageBand too.
    ah, thanks for that
    what irritates me, Prince wrote:
The audio tracks were voiceovers that came from my
    dv8tape, imported into imovie4.
... ehm, but this is the iM 6(six) section, as said,
iM 6 allows now "swapping" files with GB3... (I'm way
back in the 90ies.... see my specs... )
so, video is in some iM, and he wants to use the
    actual "on-tape" raw audios...
I thnik we need a little more detail...

  • How can I do a simple MIDI track (no virtual instrument)?

I'm having the hardest time trying to figure out how to do a simple MIDI recording. So far as I can tell, I can only record MIDI data if I select a virtual instrument for the MIDI track. When I used to use Cubase, I could just record the straight MIDI signal without having to select an "output" for it, and then load up whatever instrument I wanted to use later. Can I do that with Logic 9? I record some MIDI stuff live, and I'd like to not have to bog down my machine with running live virtual instruments.
Mainly what I'm doing is recording the MIDI data of a set of VDrums, so that when I get to mixing later on, I can trash the crappy v-drum sounds and use DFH Superior for my drums.
Much thanks for any advice ahead of time!

Cool. I'll check this out and see if it's that easy for me. i feel like I tried that, but it wouldn't show any signal until I inserted a virtual instrument. I'll try again and make sure I do it right.
What we're doing while playing live is using the Roland Vdrum sounds live (and recording the vdrum sounds themselves, as well), and also recording the MIDI data to a MIDI track. Later during mixing, I'll mute all the vdrum audio and pipe the MIDI track through DFH Sup. I have a v-drum preset I can then apply so that the MIDI data will trigger the software correctly. In the studio, I use DFH and listen to it during recording.

  • How do I record multiple midi instruments in Logic Pro simultaneously on separate tracks?sim

Hi. I am trying to record multiple midi instruments simultaneously into Logic Pro 9 through a MOTU USB Fas Lane so that it is similar to recording a live band.
    Essentially:
Track 1: Midi Keyboard - Motu Fast Lane Input A - Logic Pro - Software Instrument (Absynth)
Track 2: Midi Drum Kit - Motu Fast Lane Input B - Logic Pro - Software Instrument (Battery)
Neither Midi device can be set to a separate channel.
I would have thought this was a really common application (recoding from multiple live midi sources like a band would normally do) yet it seems unnecessarily complicated.
I gather what I would have to do involves:
    1) Going into the Environment.
    2) Creating a Physical Input
    3) Creating a Sequencer Input
    4) Placing a transofrmer between the Physical Input and the Sequencer Input
Where to go ffrom there I have not got a clue!
    Any help would be appreciated.
Incidentally I would also like to record two audio tracks at the same time as the midi track, but hoepfully that does not complicate things further.
    Thanks,
    Luke

I have it set to Performance mode which according to the owners manual: "This mode makes the XP-30 function as a multitimbral sound
source, and Performance settings can be modified. If you’re
using an external MIDI device to control the XP-30 in this
mode, it will function as a multitimbral sound source."
