PE 13 Upgrade leaves PE 11 behind

I installed PE 13 Upgrade version today.  I find that the PE 11 version is still on the disc.  Should I uninstall it?  Any risk?

No risk, PSE11 and 13 are distinct and independent softwares; so, it's your choice.
You may want to keep PSE11 because some features have been omitted in PSE13; don't hurry to uninstall...

  • IPhoto randomly deleting photos, leaving empty events behind.

Hi. My iPhoto will randomly delete photos from entire events, leaving behind only an empty event. What is happening? Are the photos still on my computer somewhere? How do I make is stop?
I have read it could be a corrupt library? Is that possible? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Super! Thanks for the guidline for providing better detail.
    I'm running iPhoto '11 (version 9.4.2)
    -on OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.4
    - There doesn't seem to be a trend to what photos are deleted and when. It has started within the past 5-6 months. All I observe is when I open my iPhoto, on occasion there will be an empty event. It never deletes partial events and it never deletes the event itself (that I have noticed) There are absolutley no other problems with iPhoto itself. It speaks to my iPhone and iPad just fine, iCloud syncs the Photo Stream well. I am fairly certain that the only photos deleted came from my iPhone. (I have an iPhone 5)
In addition to deleting photos, it seems that iPhoto is misplacing events. For example, I have an event with only 3 photos in it taken on 12 April. It has been moved to the top of the list of events for no apparent reason.
    - I can't say how long this has been going on. Maybe 5-6 months tops. I did move to Indonesia from America in that time. I can't imagine that would do anything. Before I left, I replaced my hard drive (upgraded to 1TB from 500GB). I restored off of the old hard drive with no problem. I also got more memory installed so I'm running with 8GB instead of 4GB. I have not installed anything or made any other noticeable changes since the problem began. Although replacing a hard drive is no small thing...
    - I have tried to reveal the photos in Finder to see if the original files are still in the source library. They are not. The organization now skips a number where my photos ought to be. Other than that I'm not sure how to fix it. I don't really have a backup from which I can restore.
    - There is nothing unusual about the setup, it's a standard Mac OS and I only use iPhoto with my iPhone and iPad.
I hope that helps give some information?

  • Differential backup cleanup tasks leave empty files behind

    Hello,
I have a full backup done weekly and then differential backups every 4 hours. Both backups are followed by cleanup tasks. Full backups and cleanup tasks run with no problems and so do differential backups too and their cleanup tasks, but sometimes differential
backup cleanup leaves behind empty files (0 bytes in size).
I checked the logs, and differential backup tasks are completing succesfully and I can see the backup files being created too and being cleaned up too, but sometimes there are empty backup files left over. I had the same issue while using SQL Server maintenance
tasks and Ola Hallengren's SQL Server Maintenance Solution. I tried googling and asking Ola too but couldn't come up with a solution.
Has anybody else had anything like this happenning or has any idea what might be causing this?

    Hello,
A 0 byte file generally means there was a problem with whatever created it. Maintenance plan cleanups check the file header to see if it's a SQL Server backup file. If it isn't, it won't delete it thus the reason why it's "left behind". figure
out why the files are created as 0 bytes and if that can be fixed, there will be no cleanup issue.

  • Can I resize my existing Bootcamp partition (leaving XP Pro behind) while doing a clean Win 7 install?

I currently have a Bootcamp partition (30 Gb or so) running XP pro.  I want to switch to Win 7, which I understand requires a clean install since there is no upgrade path from XP directly to Win7.  While doing so I want to increase the size of my BC partition.  (I'm offloading iTunes and iPhoto to external drives and freeing up 60+ Gb so I can make a bigger partition)
Do I just run Bootcamp Assistant and do the deed as if I were starting from scratch, but specify a larger partition?
The full scenario is that I have an HP laptop running Win7, and XP pro in Bootcamp.  I want to swap them.  Any advice on the process?  Activate/Deactivate/Reactivate dance.  I realize this is a Windows question, but someone may have done this before.
    Thanks for any help.

contrary to kappy, you can buy and use CampTune to resize.
you can't use a HP install on Mac.
you need a retail Win7 to activate on a different motherboard.
Start from scratch. Anything else is likely to have problems.

  • Upgrading leaves the old version installed. Why and can I get rid of it?

I had SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on a Win7 box, and upgraded it to SQL Server 2014. All seems to have gone well, but in the programs menu I can see that SSMS 2008 R2 is still installed. For some reason, I seem to have SQL Server 2012 installed as
well, which is clever as I never installed it! I don't know if this came with SQL Server 2014, but I now seem to have
three versions of SQL Server installed!
Is there any reason why the old versions weren't uninstalled? Surely once I've upgraded, I don't need all the old stuff. Can I safely uninstall anything related to 2008 R2 and 2012, or will this cause problems?
    Thanks

  • Failed 10.6 Upgrade leaves 50GB+ of data??? Stumped...

I attempted to run the retail 10.6 upgrade on my main internal 500GB on my MBP 17 (early 2007) with 10.5.8. At least 55Gb was available.
The install failed with a "Contact the manufacturer" message. I rebooted off the main internal drive which was still using 10.5.8 but there was only about 120MB available on startup.
Before upgrading there was at least 55GB available. After many attempts - I cannot locate the 58GB or so of data that the install process created.
I tried re-installing to see if it would "see" the incomplete install. The 10.6 installer did seem to see a "incomplete upgrade" but it would not proceed as there was not enough drive space.
I tried running Disk Utility from the 10.6 installer disk and DU says that it could not Repair the drive and to erase/initialize to use the drive.
I rebooted again back off the internal and after a very long startup - I am back up and running with 10.5.8 and again - a whopping 55GB of unaccounted for data. I erased about 6 GB of old stuff just to keep working on it. I have the drive backed up remotely but not a local copy. I want to just clone my drive but dont want to clone the 55GB of un-needed data.
    In command line I ran:
    $ df -h
    It shows that /dev/disk0s2 has:
    Size: 465 Gi
    Used: 459 Gi
    Avail: 6.1 Gi
    Capacity: 99%
So I look at all my directories (inluding hidden) to see what they were taking up:
    sudo du -hs ./*
    The main ones being:
    14G ./Applications
    33G ./Library
    3.9G ./System
    335G ./Users
    3.7G ./private
    1.1G ./usr
(the rest were 10MB or less)
This adds up to just over 390GB.
I cannot figure out where the other 68GB is being used for the total reported 459GB that it says is being used.
How can I find where this data is?

I don't remember exactly where but, the installer places all the files it needs for the upgrade on the local drive and then swaps the files, reboots, loads the new files, etc. There are still other directories besides the ones listed below (and, not contained within /private) for instance bin, dev, home, net, sbin... But, it sounds like the files are still sitting on your drive and the system is just not able to make the swap. Likely, the issue Disk Utility reports is preventing loading the new software. I would say you're still looking at backing up, initializing the drive, reinstalling 10.5.x, then 10.6.x, then loading the updates, migrating your data... You've got a job ahead! Not hard but definitely time consuming.

  • Transfering from Gmail to TB but want to leave large attachments behind.

Before I start the transfer from Gmail to TB can I setup TB to only bring over the emails and not the attachments or those under 1mb?
I don't want to delete them from Gmail now as I have to go through them 1 by 1. I need the emails now and my Gmail account is 50GB, which I'm sure would take 10-14+ days on my meager 6mbps att residential account. (I suppose I could upgrade to the fastest account for this month).

    Curt,
I am not sure what to tell you to try. The one thing that I would typically recommend, may not work with Gmail, but may be worth a try.
If you try this, I would recommend that you temporially set your Advanced Preferences to never automatically check for new messages. Then Quit Mail. Next, in the Finder, open Home/Library/Mail/the POP folder for the Gmail account. At the root level of this POP folder please you will find a file named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 -- this can be deleted. With normal POP accounts, this would cause all messages still on the server to again be downloaded, when you next launch Mail and check for new mail. However, with a Gmail account, this should not happen, because Gmail keeps track of any you have ever downloaded, and does not present them for comparison to this file. This is why with Gmail, you cannot download to more than one computer, without changing preferences using the web interface. Thus, I think only those messages not yet downloaded will be presented, and if communication with this file is involved in your issue, it might be resolved. I don't have great hope of this, however.
    Check something, before trying that:
Control-click over the Inbox, and choose Get Info. In the resulting dialogue, choose the Gmail account, and tell me whether these large messages can be seen. I have just tested disabling checking for new mail, sent a message to my Gmail account, and with this feature could see the message awaiting download. With any messages actually downloaded, once, this command will not show them. Let me know what you find.

  • Why does the eraser tool leave a stoke behind?

I tried expanded the appearance of the object I am trying to erase and my stoke is set to none and I have checked the settings and there is nothing there in terms of stroke. Here is a screenshot of what happens when I try to erase anything.
Please help I don't remember having this problem in the past but I am lost and I really need your help as soon as possible!

Look into the path eraser tool, which you can get to by clicking and holding on the pencil tool. Or you may have started with a broken circle in the past, rather than one that is connected the full 360°.
The top tool is the path eraser tool.

  • Still scared of leaving Mountain Lion behind!  Dual boot?

I want to keep Mountain Lion because it works perfectly.  I just want to test Yosemite out of curiosity, and I am looking for the simplest and fastest way to do this. - Could I put the installer file in an SD card (8GB), boot from the card and install Yosemite from there?
    - Could I install it from my Mountain Lion system and choose the SD card as the target drive during installation?
Any other idea?  I just don't want to mess up my current system.
    Thanks in advance.
    Alex

Create a small partition on your hard drive (but only if you don't use Windows.) Install Yosemite on this partition. You will need about 30-50 GBs.
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the Add [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.
Download the Yosemite installer application from the App Store. After it downloads it will open automatically with an Install button. Click on the button. You will shortly see a screen in which a destination disk is presented. It will be your Mountain Lion volume, so DO NOT proceed yet. Click on the link under the disk icon labeled, "Show other disks." Now select the new partition/volume you created earlier. Click on the Install button. This will also work to install on an external drive. You won't have to do the partitioning thing from above. Just re-direct the destination to your external drive.

When removing the package freenx, the user "nx" and all files are removed. The group "nx" remains in /etc/group and should be removed too.

I guess that it should be removed too. Submit a bug report.

  • IOS 6 config profile bug: removing profile with APN proxy leaves proxy settings behind

Has anyone noticed this problem on iOS 6: if you install a configuration profile with APN proxy settings and then remove it, the proxy settings themselves stay in the device. The profile itself is removed but the proxy settings are still there. This was never the case before. When the profile is removed it is expected that the proxy settngs (inside the profile) will be gone too.
The only workaround I have been able to find is to do a Network Reset following the profile removal. This is major and needs to be fixed
If you have seen this problem, have you found another workaround?

Can you please explain this app rejection? The app can always launch Safari to a URL that contains the profile and install that way. Is there another way for an app to install a configuration profile? are there APIs for that?
I, personally, still dont get this. It seems so obvious. I wish someone could tell me from Apple whether this is done by design.

  • DSEE 6.3.1 upgrade to 7.0

I'm in the middle of upgrading all my 6.3.1 servers to 7.0. I've been following the upgrade and migration guide (http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4808/6ng8f6kgj?l=en&a=view). I have upgraded DSCC and my DPS instances in my lab environment and am planning out the steps for upgrading my directory servers. The current installation is native package based (RPM) and thus are 32-bit instances.
I'm following the section titled "To Upgrade 32–bit Server Instances" and in step five the documentation mentions:
"If your Directory Server instance was configured to use non-default directories for databases, the configuration has been reset but files have not been deleted. Before reconfiguring your instance to use non-default directories, you must delete all old databases, caches, and transaction logs."
Could anyone provide some more detail around what needs to be done for this step. Simply mentioning these tasks with no details of what needs to be done is very deficient in my opinion. Some questions:
    1. How do I re-configure the instance to use the non-default directories?
    2. Can I use the same instance path that is running currently under the 6.3.1 install?
    3. How do I delete the old databases, caches and transaction logs safely?
Or would I be better off to create a new instance and import my suffix data into the new instance?

I generally do not use migration scripts. I have found that it is safer and more beneficial to simply build out the new instances, configure them to be compatible with the previous instances, and execute a migration plan - usually involving replication and some sort of reversible cutover.
This approach has the following benefits:
    1) Configuration review of the existing instances sufficient to build a correctly configured new Directory is beneficial in itself. Any subsequent problems will be much easier to understand if a thorough configuration review and assessment has been performed.
    2) All time spent on the migration is spent producing artifacts of credible business value. A configuration template, migration plan, and new system build artifacts all have credible business value. Hours spent troubleshooting a migration script that's not working as expected have a much less credible business value.
    3) The migration scripts typically fail to migrate so many things (as you are seeing), that a retroactive configuration review and manual migration becomes necessary anyway. Once you have spent enough time going back and fixing everything that didn't migrate correctly, you may as well have done a comprehensive configuration review up front.
    4) The comprehensive configuration review also allows you to assess the purpose of existing configurations. Obsolete configurations can be discarded, configurations whose purpose can be better satisfied by new features can be upgraded, and features that are no longer supported by the software can be assessed, and - depending on the details - a solution can be designed for them. This can make the difference between a tailored, successful upgrade and a shot in the dark.
    Your questions:
    1. How do I re-configure the instance to use the non-default directories?
There are a number of directories in the database configuration. For the most part, you will need to stop slapd, edit dse.ldif, and restart it. Once you have determined exactly which directories you are moving, you can see what you have left behind. Be aware that the database as a whole can be moved, but tinkering with parts of it while leaving other parts behind will generally give you a database that's unusable. For instance, if you delete the transaction logs (or move the transaction log directory without copying the logs with it) and then try to start up the database with the previous database files in it, the DB will not start and you will have to reimport the whole thing from LDIF.
    2. Can I use the same instance path that is running currently under the 6.3.1 install?
    No.
    3. How do I delete the old databases, caches and transaction logs safely?
Once the server is no referencing the old paths, you can remove the contents. I am a bit concerned that you may make a mistake here, though. If you have both a 7.0 and a 6.3.1 instance running on the same box, you need to make certain these separate instances never point at the same directory for db-home, transaction logs, or, really, anything else. The safest way to do that is use the ZIP distribution (which I recommend anyway), and install in a totally separate path.

  • My PPC G5 isn't supported by the new MobileMe web upgrade

The new web MobileMe upgrade leaves many loyal .mac users unable to use some awesome new functionality(especially the additions to contacts). I run a PPC G5 that isn't supported by snow leopard. Sooo, I'm thinking I might move all of my cloud computing over to my Google account where my G5 is supported.

Yes, we're being left behind, but it sounds like you found a good solution.

  • EMac OS Upgrade?

My daughter was just given a eMac running 10.2.8 with a 700MHz processor
    and 1 gig of memory.
What would be the best OS to upgrade to?

This past weekend I upgraded my daughter's eMac 700 to Tiger (10.4) from Panther and it runs quite well. I think you will be happy. I had to add RAM (went from 384 to 768MB) but yours has more RAM already. It's nice to have all the latest browsers on that computer again.
Be aware that few 7-year old G4 Macs can handle many of today's online videos streams without some choppiness. The technology seems to be leaving the G4 behind. Even our 1.42Ghz eMac struggles. Make sure you have the latest versions of the Flash and Shockwave players from adobe.com. Other than that, the computer plus Tiger is quite nice.
Tiger OS retail install disks are DVD. Our eMac did not have a DVD drive but I recently found an older Sony external DVD writer that was Mac-bootable via FireWire. I used it to boot from the install DVD and do the installation. If you use an external DVD drive for the installation, it must be FireWire.
The serial number label inside the optical drive door should show what kind of optical drive is installed. The image is this Apple article:

shows in the third line of text that the example computer has a Superdrive. You want to see that or "Combo Drive" to avoid the use of an external DVD drive.
