Permitting access accross a home (LAN? ethernet?) network - how?

I have a Cube, to which 2 hard drives are attached by firewire.
I have a PowerBook and Tower linked to the Cube by a local (home) network. All run OSX 10.4.8; all can be connected and appear on the Finder sidebar. the PowerBook, for ex, can 'see' and read/write the hard drives.
On the Cube I connect to the PowerBook, and under users, it says that one (the major one) account is not permitted to me. If I connect to that account specifically, I can read everything in it.
Question 1: What do I change on the PowerBook or its account(s) so that I can read the whole user account folder across the network?
Now, I pull up Silverkeeper, and tell it to back up stuff from a networked machine to a hard drive. It tells me that the receiving hard drive doesn't like permission restrictions, so I tell it to ignore them. It still doesn't copy everything - permissions at the source, I think. Oh, this error message occurred only after I re-initialized the whole hard drive. Must have been set up, by default, then.
The Mac Help folder tells me about this issue, and says I shouldn't use the "ignore" option for back-ups.
So to my questions:
Question 2: How do I set the permissions, so that the hard drives are acceptable to the other machines, in terms of permissions, access, etc.
Question 3: Where do I find a rational discussion, however long, that covers these issues of setting/granting permissions across a home network? I have no dedicated OSX Server here.
I would be happy to continue searching, but even with the search function, I'm not finding what I think I need. (Must be I'm using the wrong words

Accessing the various user folders across the network works the same as it does on the machine itself - if you don't log in to an account you are not supposed to be able to see into it (logging in as a guest will allow access to the public folders). Permissions on an external drive don't usually count for much, since just about anyone can check that 'ignore' box (although the drive won't mount at all in an account that has no access privileges). The system sometimes doesn't like to copy certain items from a user account, but copying (or creating an encrypted disk image) from within the user account and then moving it to the external drive should work OK.

    I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I have a BT Home Hub which is fine but the wireless signal is very poor at the furthest point away in my house (3 Story house) :/
    However I do have Cat5 Lan networking throughout the house, I would still like to use laptop wirelessly on the though on the third floor without moving the HUB from the ground floor.
    Is there a bit of equipment I can connect to my LAN network (taking a cable from the hub into my cat5 Lan network) then a cable out of the LAN socket at the far end of the house....and into some sort of signal booster or repeater??
    Anyone tried this before or know what I would need??......or if there would be any problem with it?

    Yes, no reason why not.
    When you initially connect it to your network it will pick up an ip address via dhcp from the hub, login to the hub and find the access points ip address. Using that ip address type that into a browser and should get the access points web interface, first thing to do is to change it's ip address from dhcp to static and use something in the upper range of the hub's dhcp scope, Jarvisier recommends 192.168.1.175, you'll also need to add subnet 255.255.255.0 and a gateway of 192.168.1.254 (Hub's address). 
    Then set up ssid and network key, you can set this up the same as the hubs' if you want to (not necessary), but it means if you take your laptop downstairs whilst still connected then you won't get a loss of connectivity from the network. Obviously you'll need to click save or apply or reboot depends on the access point so that all the settings are stored.
    Once done power cycle the access point, login into the hub and under home networking the access point should be displayed with a static ip address, and you should then be able to connect your laptop.

    I'm wanting to connect my DVD player to the internet. I can't afford the manufacturer's adapter. I have a broadband router, but I need cables for it. At least 25' from the wall outlet to the router. Trying to look on-line, there seem to be different types of cables. I'm a little technologically challenged... Well, geographically too... The router is a Cicso/Linksys wireless G broadband router, Model WRT546 version 6. I've seen prices from $50 on down to $10. I'm worried that I'll wind up with the wrong type of cable. What's the best price for a 25' (or 35') cable? I'll need several shorter ones as well - to connect the DVD player, the Wii... Thank you!!!!!!!

    For wired Ethernet indoors, any Category 5e certified cable will do.  Don't overpay for overpriced brands like Monster.
    Outdoors and "plenum" (inside an air duct) wiring has special requirements - but I assume you don't need outdoor or plenum-rated cable.

  • Wireless Printing to OfficeJet Pro 8600 Connected to Ethernet Network

    We have an OfficeJet Pro 8600 that is connected to our home's Ethernet network and would like to print to it from devices such as laptops, phones, and tablets.  Any attempt to turn the printer's wireless capabilities on results in a command to disconnect the Ethernet cable, which we would prefer not to do.
    Is there any way to "have our cake and eat it too", retaining the Ethernet connection while having the ability to print wirelessly?  While useful, HP's ePrint doesn't offer the direct-from-application convenience we desire.

  • Mac wakes up for Ethernet network administrator access, goes to sleep again

    I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.6 on an iMac G5, and the OS is set up such that it presents a login prompt after the Mac is witched on from standby mode. If one does not start to type in a password, the machine goes back into standby mode after a dozen seconds or so, which is helpful e.g. in case I have hit the keyboard by accident.
    However, there are situations when I don't want this to happen. For instance, I own a SqueezeBox v5 device, which will wake also the Mac when I turn it on via its remote control (I assume via "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access"). However, since I do type on the Mac keyboard in this case, but use the Squeezebox remote control instead, the Mac decides to turn itself off again. I'm also facing this with utilities that try to wake up my Mac at a certain time to perform their functions (e.g. with Audio Hijack Pro).
    So my question is, is there any way to tell Mac OS X not to fall back into standby mode when woken up by another mechanism than normal keyboard typing, via some configuration file or similar. Turning off the keyword prompt entirely is not a tolerable option for me in this case.

    The 'wake for ethernet network administrator access' does not mean 'wake on any old ethernet traffic you like'.
    In other words you can't just try to hit any service you choose - if the machine is asleep then it doesn't even have an IP address that's going to listen to your hit.
    How it works is via a special broadcast protocol sent from another machine on the LAN. The packet is sent to the machine's hardware MAC address (and therefore doesn't need any services to be running on the machine). When the hardware detects the packet it wakes up the machine.
    There are a few utilities that will send the relevant packets to wake a machine. Apple Remote Desktop has it, but so do free utilities like WakeOnLAN.

    Q: How do you set up the airport (wifi) to access the internet to surf the web; while connected to an ethernet network?
    Background; this imac is set up at work and can access the public wifi to surf the internet as long as the ethernet cable is unplugged from the back, but to browse the network files and drives and check email to do work the ethernet cable must be plugged in. But its a pain to keep walking around to the back of the mac and plugging in and unplugging the cables.
    There has to be a way to set safari to use the airport to access the internet and set mail to use the ethernet ports.

    The normal setup would be to an attach a wireless access point to the existing network. Then connect to that device wirelessly. So use something like an airport express. Connect the network cable that normally goes into your mac into the aiport express. Then connect your mac to the airport express wirelessly.

    Just bought new Ipod Touch 5g. I found out it can't access Internet in home network. not really cannot access, but very slow to open any web page, App Store failed to access, etc. But, OK with other Wifi (office & starbucks).   • Home LAN access

    A couple of weeks ago, I opened my wife's iPhoto library with my home LAN. I copied some photos to it and exited.
    Recently I opened her iPhoto library again (from my computer) - and saw most of the events and folders were empty - except for the pictures I copied over.
    I went upstairs and opened iPhoto on her machine. The folders and events now have her photos on it.
    So I infer that we each have separate photos in her iPhoto library. How do I stop this from happening, so that we share the same iPhoto library photos?

    What you're probably running into is ownership issues. The best way for two users or Macs to access the same library is to have that library on an external HD with itsset to be ignored as outlined in this Apple document: iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users.
    Although the article is about users on the same Mac it applies to multiple Macs.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
    Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Accessing PC on Home Network

    I just got my 1st Mac, and when I boot it up, it lists my 2 WIN PC's that are on the network. When I double click on it, it says connection failed. I'm not sure how to access it, as I need to transfer files. All the computers belong to me, so I have complete access to them, just don't know how to access the files.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    On airport utility you can see the name of the windows network of your TC, default is WORKGROUP, (yes caps look) you need to have the pc on the same network name.
    On PC you can change the name on properties of my computer > Computer Name > Change > Member of...

  • Adding wireless to home LAN w/ WRT54G2

    I have a home LAN composed of ethernet cables and two Linksys Etherfast 10/100 5-port workgroup switches. This setup is about 6 years old and has always worked fine, has never been updated since original setup.
    Now I need to replace the ethernet card in my son's desktop computer, and since he will probably be getting a laptop soon with wireless, I figured this would be a good time to add wireless to our network. I've never worked with any wireless network stuff before, so just bought what the guy at Staples recommended: a Linksys Wireless-G PCI card to replace my son's ethernet card, and a Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless-G Broadband Router.
    We are not using the Router for an internet connection; we live too far from town for cable, and don't want Embarq DSL, so our only internet connection is by dial-up through my computer (connection shared with the kids through our LAN).
    All I want this new wireless stuff for is to let my son connect to our existing LAN via wireless.
    Problem 1: all of the setup instructions seem to assume that we are connecting to the internet by cable or DSL and that this will go through the new router. As noted above, we're not doing that.
    Problem 2: when I try to do the initial setup from the included CD, it keeps giving me errors. The errors are different depending on whether my computer is connected to the internet via dial-up when I run the setup:
    2a) if my computer is connected to the internet via dial-up when I run setup, the error message comes during the first step (Check Connection) and says "Error 301: Internal Error" - unfortunately, there does not seem to be any reference for me to look up Error 301 and see what this actually means.
    2b) if my computer is not connected to the internet when I run setup, then setup progresses OK through the Check Connection step without error and goes on to the Install Router step. Since I am not connecting to the internet through this router, I cannot follow the instructions exactly as given (since they assume a cable or DSL connection through the router), but I do the rest of it and connect the router to my computer's ethernet port with the included cable, then plug in the router. Setup shows a "waiting for router" message for about two minutes, then terminates with the error message: "Your new router does not appear to be connected properly. Error 322: New Router Not Detected." (The green LEDs light up showing that the router recognizes an ethernet connection in LAN port 1, but the setup program doesn't seem to be aware of this somehow?)
    Problem 3: I thought that I might be able to just skip the above by giving my web browser the address 192.168.1.1 and going into the router's internal setup that way. No such luck; although the router is connected to my computer and is powered on, my browser says the requested page is Not Found.
    Is this even the right product for what I am trying to do - add wireless to our existing LAN? Or is this only intended for connection through a cable or DSL modem to the internet,as all of the instructions seem to assume?
    Any help for dealing with above error problems and getting this thing working?

    You did not want a wireless router. You wanted a wireless access point. Wireless routers are made to share the internet connection. That's what the standard installation procedure on the CD does. Anything else must be done manually.
    You can use the access point in the WRT to add wireless to your existing LAN. The basic instructions are here.
    In your scenario the first router is your dial-up computer with internet sharing. It uses IP address 192.168.0.1 by default. An available LAN IP address for the WRT would be 192.168.0.2 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0.
    To change it, you should unplug the WRT from everything. Connect a single computer by wire to the WRT. Do not use your dial-up/internet-sharing computer for that. This other computer should automatically get an IP address from the WRT and now you should be able to access http://192.168.1.1/ In the setup change the LAN IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.2. On the same page also turn off the DHCP server. Now save the settings. You'll loose the connection.
    Now rewire everything back. The WRT is hooked up by one of its numbered LAN ports to your LAN! Do not use the internet port of the WRT! That should do it. Now wireless computers can connect through the WRT into your LAN and through that to your dial-up and internet.

  • How to screen share a Tiger iBook from a Leopard iMac outside my home LAN

    Okay, I have recently installed Tiger on my girlfriends G3 iBook, and I am able to control it from my iMac via Screensharing, but so far I have only tried this while they are both on my home network, (the iBook is using an ethernet connection from my iMac which itself is connected to the internet via Airport)
    What I am hoping someone can do for me is to give me step by step guide on how I would control the iBook when it is connected to the internet outside my home LAN.
    I have seen a tutorial for Chicken Of The VNC, but I am still in the dark as to whether I need to install this on my Leopard iMac, or on the Tiger iBook. I am also concerned about the security risks inherent in doing this, so I would like to learn how make a secure connection from the outside world.
    I am completely clueless when it comes to port forwarding, or anything to do with ports for that matter,
    I would be massively grateful if someone could talk me through this.

    The easy way is to use something like LogMeIn.com, YuuGuu.com, CoPilot.com, Timbuktu, TeamViewer.com. Some of these are free for non-commercial use.
    They figure out how to deal with home routers, and provide encrypted connections. The down side is that they are not always fast.
    Using a secure VNC connection tends to involve either setting up a VPN server on the remote system, or using ssh tunnels. I'm an ssh tunnel person myself, but it has lots of steps.
    a) Enable Sharing -> Remote Login on the remote system (enables ssh logins).
    a.1) give the remote system a secure password.
    b) enable the VNC server on the remote system (Sharing -> Apple Remote Desktop)
    b.1) Via Apple Remote Desktop configuration, give VNC access a password.
    b.2) Optionally use a different VNC server, for example Vine Server.
    c) Configure the remote system's home router to "Forward Port 22" from the internet to the target system.
    d) Using something like whatismyip.com get the internet visible IP address of the remote system.
    d.1) optionally get a free dyndns.org or no-ip.com dynamic domain name and run a dynamic DNS update client on the remote system.
    e) On your system, start an ssh connection to the remote system
    ssh -l user -L 5900:127.0.0.1:5900 remote.sys.ip.addr
    Password: ........
    f) Use your VNC client to connect to the ssh tunnel using
    127.0.0.1:5900
    as the ssh tunnel address.
    g) Enter the remote system's VNC password (separate from the ssh username password).
    I have left out a lot of details. But knowing the steps, you can most likely do google lookups to get the details you need.

    I set up a 2 unit home net with a Linksys WRT54G Router, One PC hardwired to Port 1 and a Notebook conected via the wireless port. Both PC are Pentium and WXPPRO.
    When I try to browse the local workgroup ("MICASA") I get the following error message: "You have no access to "WorkGroup". You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The server list for this workgroup is not accessible at this moment."
    Wireless has MAC filter enabled and security disabled
    I restricted DHCP adresses to only 2 => 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101
    Win XP Pro Firewall is disabled in both PC
    I worked as ADMIN with proper password in both boxes. Full file security enabled.
    Shared both C disks with proper local and share permits.
    In registry both PCs have: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Lsa/"restrictanonimous"=0
    I could see both PCs in "my network places" for a couple of days, with full and proper file sharing, and then both pc's dissapeared. Both PC's access internet properly.
    The obnoxious message listed at the beginning began appearing when I click "Workgroup" in "my network places". I tried everything, including unsetting and re-setting file sharing for C disks. Nothing happens.
    The W2K Resource Kit Browser Monitor reports no brouser on the LAN.
    I can ping one adress from the other and I can log onto the other box shares by typing the name in Windows Explorer (\\Pentium or \\PCdeLidia)

    I checked the Node setting (ipconfig /all) and it is "broadcast".
    So, I decided to start all over again.
    1) I un-shared all shares in both computers (The notebook and the desktop).
    2) I reset the linksys router and used the Linksys setup wizard to reconfigure it from 0 (cero) - dropped (disabled)  ALL security - Left only admin setup password - Changed the workgroup SSID from "MyHome" To "Home" - just to be sure.
    3) Run network setup wizard in desktop (WXP Pro). Sharing Printers and files enabled.
    4) Stopped and Disabled the WXP firewall in the Desktop (it was disabled, but the network wizard enables it and leaves it running)
    5) Rebooted the Desktop
    6) At this point, I finally could browse the local lan and see my desktop listed
      My Network Places / All the Net / Microsoft Windows Network / "Home" / "Pentium" (my desktop)
    7) Went over to the notebook and re-checked all file-sharing was off, then I erased the WI-FI profile in it (uses the Intel wizard), changed the workgroup name from "My Home" to "Home", Rebooted it and connected it to the Wi-Fi "Home" net that was detected. ALL security disabled, including WXP Firewall.
    8) Now, the whole net is visible from both PC's
      My Network Places / All the Net / Microsoft Windows Network / "Home" / "Pentium" (my desktop)
      My Network Places / All the Net / Microsoft Windows Network / "Home" / "PCdeLidia" (my wife's  notebook)
    9) I enabled a couple of shares in both machines and I could browse them and connect to them
    10) Finally, all goes to hell: I shut-off both PCs and the LinkSys router. Then I powered the linksys, and then the Desktop. The notebook still OFF. And Voilá, same awful post:
    "You have no access to "WorkGroup". You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The server list for this workgroup is not accessible at this moment."
    I'm not even able to see myself.
    One tip: I used the browser monitor from W2K. Before, I was able to see 3 (three) lines listed, no browser. Unfortunately, i did not write it down. Now I can see only the following 2 (two) lines:
    MiCasa \Device\NetBT_TCPIP_ {€ unknown  (Not an Euro sign, something like that)
    MiCasa \Device\NwlnkNb         unknown
    Now I have to quit, no more time, I'll continue later and keep you posted
