Photo Orientation: Vertical vs. Horizontal?

I downloaded a number of photos from zip files.  Some of the photos were vertical and some were horizontal.
When I first viewed them in Finder/Coverflow method, the verticals were sideways until the image was the one actually being viewed, and I could see the entire image. When the image was the center/main image, the image rotated 90-degrees and I could only see part of the image.
I don't recall this happening before, but it is obviously frustrating.  I attempted to import the photos into Aperture to see if perhaps the image would again become completely visible, but that didn't work. Neither did opening images in Photoshop.
I have downloaded verticals in the past, including imports from iCloud, and this has never happened.
I'm inclined to believe the problem is related to first viewing them in Coverflow within the finder. Perhaps the problem is related to the files having first arrived within a .zip file?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Do you mean that when you rotate the phone from landscape ("horizontal") to portrait position ("vertical") the movie doesn't rotate to the right viewing position or it doesn't fill the screen?
The result should be a small picture since the width of the image is limited by the portrait mode width of the screen. It won't fill the hight of the portrait screen, as this would cut off most of the width of the image.

  • How can I get my display to change orientation vertical to horizontal

How can I get orientation of display (vertical to horizontal) to change with phone position

It should change automatically when you turn the phone but note that there are some screens such as the home screen that do not rotate and some apps that don't support rotation. Also the orientation can be locked. You can turn the lock on or off by opening Control Center (while on the home screen swipe up with one finger starting from below the bottom of the screen). The orientation lock control is on the right end of the top row in Control Center and looks like a lock inside a partially circular arrow. When on, the same icon displays in the menu bar.

  • How do I keep a photo's proper orientation (vertical or horizontal)?

My pictures on my computer that were taken holding the camera vertically show up horizontal on my Itouch when they should be vertical, and when I rotate the Itouch 90 degrees, they show up vertical. I don't use Iphoto, I use the Canon software that came with the camera. I've tried rotating the picture on my computer and then uploading it to the Itouch, but that doesn't solve it. Any ideas?

I ended up shutting down my system, and when I started it back up, I was able to drag the photo to the trash and delete it (I did get a message warning that my deleting the photo might negatively affect the application that was "using" it, but I deleted it anyway...it worked...and I'm hoping I didn't adversely affect another application!).
Thanks so much for your help!

  • Image Sequence with vertical and horizontal photos

I'm trying to use a particle emitter with image sequence to make photos appear and move one at a time. I have collected about 20 JPEGs that I numbered sequentially so Motion would read them as an image sequence. No problem there. Most of the photos have a horizontal orientation (3000x2000) but several are vertical (2000x3000), and Motion is cropping the vertical images to fit within a horizontal frame (like this). When I apply the particle emitter, that cropping is retained.
I know I have seen examples of a similar process and the emitter treats the photos are individual pieces, retaining their original size and orientation. What am I doing wrong?

Technically, in a proper Image Sequence, all images are the same size/aspect ratio.
What you'll need to do is make on set (vertical or horizontal) a new size, to fit inside the other. The Particle Emitter will matte it's images to one or the other, which ever comes first.

  • Wrong Photo Orientation

    Hi there.
I just upgraded to Z1 Compact and while copying new photos I noticed my vertically taken photos are shown rotated left. Looks like all photos are taken in Width>Height resolution 3840x2160. This is fine for horizontal photos of course but Vertically taken photos appear sideways on my PC. My old HTC Desire S automatically adjust photos taken vertically to correct resolution by default (in sony it should be 2160x3840 if it did it the same way) which is what common sense suggest (photo Height should be bigger than Width)
Photos appear in the way they were taken in Album and such on the phone and I basically would like to get them copied to my PC the same way. Is there a way to do it on the fly or change some options I can not find to do so? I can of course rotate them manually in my photo explorer but it will be pretty annoying woth hundreds of pictures
Please let me know if you can help me out with it, cheers, Dan.

I just copied it to a folder, dont even have to use software to view them as Explorer icons' options shows minatures. Like I said all photos are taken in the same resolution which is 3840x2160. Xperia itself adjust it to display them in proper manner but if you choose photos details from menu you can see the resolution which is one above. Vertical photo should be taken in "vertical" resolution of 2160x3840 (basically Width should be much less than Height).
Tried to get more info about this photo and with "Photos" software on my phone if you go to details you can see "Orientation" parameter set to 90 for vertical photos. So phone takes photos in one resolution it seems and then just insert its own modyfier to rotate and display these photos properly. I believe this parameter is lost when doing simple drag and drop on these photos resulting in them being not rotated.
Just my take on this, any other ideas let me know, cheers. Dan

  • Changing photo orientation

The photo orientation on the CHAPTERS THEME main page is vertical. How do I change it to horizontal?
    thank you

Unlike the books, calendars do not change the orientation of a frame depending on the orientation of the photo dropped into it.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Word document pdf printing with vertical and horizontal pages

I have a Word document that has both vertical and horizontal formatted pages.  When I print to PDF, the I get a new pdf file whenever a page orientation change is found.  pages 1 to 7 are vertical, 8 to 12 are horizontal and 13 to 20 are vertical again.  If I print to a file named "out_to_PDF" I get 3 files named "out_to_PDF", "out_to_PDF2" and "out_to_PDF3", the first one with pages 1 to 7, the second one with pages 8 to 12 and the third one with the remaining pages.  Is there a way to get only one file with all the pages?
I know I can merge the files later.  This file with 20 pages is no problem.  I have several 70+ page docs, with multiple changes between horizontal and vertical that will result in 20 or more separate pdf files.
    Any pointers?

Word renders print jobs that change the orientation as separate print jobs. So, each print job becomes its own PDF.
You can make an Automator workflow to combine PDFs. I’m not sure how it decides the order it combines them, so you’d have to experiment.
This is built as an Application where you’d drop all of the PDFs onto the App icon and it will open the combined PDF where you can edit, name, and save.

  • Quick Look PDF with vertical and horizontal pages

Is there any way to make Quick Look preview a PDF file with vertical and horizontal pages without adding white padding and retaining the aspect ratio?
Now, if I have a PDF with page 1 vertical and the other pages horizontal QL shows the latter also with the ratio of a vertical page and adds white padding at their top and bottom. You get the inverse output if the first page is horizontally oriented, but the rest are vertical.

  • Photo orientation in screen saver mode

Why are my vertical photos displayed horizontally when shown as part of my screen saver? They are displayed correctly in i-photo but the same photo comes up incorrectly horizontal when shown in screen saver mode.

    Hi NG49
In the screen saver preference panel if you selected them from (Choose Folder / Pictures / iPhoto Library / Originals) then you have selected the original files as there were downloaded from the source (camera, cd, web what ever). Go to iPhoto and create a New Album and drag the photos you want to use for the screensaver to it, then from the screensaver preference panel scroll down and select that album.

  • Display Screen (vertical vs. horizontal)

How can I prevent the display screen from flipping from vertical to horizontal when I turn the phone sideways?

Lock the portrait orientation by double-tapping the home button and flick the recent apps bar to the right until reaching the left end.  Tap the lock symbol.

  • Anyone experienced a Lens that works vertically not horizontally

I have a 70-200 f2.8 IS USM II coupled with a 60D camera.  The Lens was dropped (fell out of the truck) and hit the pavement.  I take sports/action pics and since then when I take pics "veritcally" (turning camera sideways for a full length shot) the pics are fine - no issues with the lens focusing or anything.  However, when I take pic horizontally, they look like I added a vignette type feature where the exact center point is in focus and then it blurs as it goes outward.  It is more pronounced when extending to 200mm versus 70mm.
Any idea what this may be and if a fix is even possible (costly or not?) and why it is damaged vertically and not horizontally?
    All feedback welcome!!
    Thank you.

You'll have to send the lens in and get it looked at, to get any idea if it's repairable and/or what the cost might be.
It sounds as if some of the elements or groups in the lens are loose or decentered badly, or another part is loose inside.
I'd suspect the group that operates the IS, since that operates on vertical and horizontal axes. If one is damaged due to the hard fall, it might only cause problems in one orientation. It also might be a part knocked loose and flopping around inside, that drops into the light path when the lens is in one orientation, but falls back out of the way when in the other orientation. AFAIK (and I certainly have never disassembled one of those lenses and studied how it works, so this is just a guess), any decentering or slippage of most of the other elements and groups would effect the lens in all orientations.

My phone gyro stopped working.  How do I flip an image from vertical to horizontal?

    Hey Bill Seiden,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues with the orientation of your iPhone. Let's check to make sure orientation lock is not enabled, you can do so from the Control Center:
Lock the screen in portrait orientation - Control Center
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TI152#TI152
Lock the screen in portrait orientation.
Swipe up from the bottom edge of any screen to reveal Control Center.
Tap to lock the screen in portrait orientation.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

    Hey Oprion,
Thanks for the question and congrats on your new iPhone 5c. The orientation of your iPhone will depend on the application you are using. For example, most of the built in applications only support the three main orientations (Horizontal, Vertical, Horizontal), whereas the Voice Memo’s application will operate “upside down” for easier access to the microphone.

  • I have 4s.  Since IOS7, I cannot get my phone to rotate from vertical to horizontal. Is there something I can change.

I have a 4s.  Since IOS7, I cannot rotate my phone from vertical to horizontal.  Anything I can do to correct.

    Hello Gerald,
The orientation lock control is now located in the Control Center on your iPhone.  If you swipe up from the bottom of the screen, you will see the option to lock or unlock the orientation:
Swipe up along the bottom of the screen to display Control Center (you can do this from any screen, including the Lock screen).
Tap the Screen Rotation Lock button.
If the button was highlighted, the button will appear dimmed after tapping it.
I recommend reviewing the full article if the issue persists after adjusting this setting in Control Center:
