Printing to Xante Accel-a-writer 8300??
Trying to connect a g-4 to a xante accel-a-writer 8300.
Guy here in town suggested a USB to Parallel cable. The USB to parallel cable has a disk with it -- but when I open the disk, all the items are "blank documents" and won't open.
The cable is made by Manhattan, its called a USB-IEEE 1284
Anyone have any idea why I can't install this driver?Nevermind.
I found Manhattan's website, they don't have drivers available for the Mac OS.
Anyone have any ideas how to hook my Accel-a-writer 8300 up to my G-4?
I used to use a local talk cable but now my local talk port is damaged, so I need another way. -
Need to import a Medical Dictionary from Quark to InDesign
Just switched from Quark to InDesign for a Medical Journal and they need their dictionary to be loaded into InDesign.
I have their .QUD file from Quark but am having difficulty loading it through the preferences.
Any help would be great.
Thanks in advance! From your description I'm guessing a .qud is a Quark User Dictionary file from Windows XPress. If so, then it should be a simple text file.<br /><br />The best thing to do is open it in a text editor, make sure it all looks clean, and then paste all of the text into InDesign and run a spell check, keeping all of the words as you go. A bunch of clicks for the conversion, but it will create a user dictionary file as InDesign requires, which is a different format from Quark's.<br /><br />When done back up your new file from ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Linguistics/Dictionaries/Adobe Custom Dictionary/<language of the file>. (Mac location, Windows should be similar.)

Please share your experiences moving from Quark to InDesign
My company's design group is pushing to move from Quark to Indesign, starting with one of my projects, which is our largest (400 pages), highest profile document (it is currently in Quark, and the plan is to pour the text and graphics into InDesign). Our schedule is very lean--leaving little room for surprises. None of the compositors in the design group have used InDesign. They are expected to recieve some formal training--but only about 1 week's worth total over a period of several weeks. I am all for making the transition to InDesign, but feel that the wiser path to take is to start on smaller and less high-profile documents that have more time in the schedule for the learning curve. However the design manager is adament that the transition will be problem-free. My experience is that any transition like this has bumps, and most are unexpected, and create havoc and panic. This document has only gone to print on time once (in 10+ years)--with me managing the project and with much sweat and tears. My hope that this year we could go to print on time AND do it with less wear and tear on all who work on it. I just don't think this will happen making this tranisiton now. Can anyone share their experiences when they made the transition?
Everyone else has had really good advice about starting with a 400 page doc, particularly if it's complex. If it's just text with a couple illustrations every 4 or 5 pages, it might be do-able, but if it's a complex document with lots of stuff on every page, it could be tricky.
Try this link for the official converter's guide.
http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/indesign/articles/indcs3ip_quarkmigration.pdf
Some practical tips for the beginning XPress converter that I learned the hard way...
- Cmd-shift-click pulls stuff off the master page.
- The lack of master anchors may limit your ability to accomplish certain master page layouts (with prelinked text boxes) that are easy to do in XPress. Everyone here will tell you to simply use the margins to control your text flow, which may or may not work well for your particular case.
- Always scroll around a document by holding down option+spacebar. This insures that you will get the scroll hand tool every time instead of accidentally inserting a zillion spaces into your text.
-Cmd-shift-A deselects everything in a text box so that you can select another tool. There is no next/prev tool shortcut, but rather keys for each tool. (T is text, A is the white arrow, V is the black arrow)
- You "thread frames" rather than "link text boxes" despite how I wrote this. :)
- Don't set text wrap to effect only the stuff underneath in the prefs because...
- All text should go in a separate layer on top of the graphics layer because...
- InDesign dynamically resolves transparency effects at print time, which means if part of your text is layered under a transparent element it may get rasterized.
- If you need to get text to show even when it's on top of an object with a text wrap, select the text box and check the "Ignore text wrap" option.
- Overprint Preview is your friend. It'll help show you all those things that you didn't notice were going to print strangely before you commit them to print. (Overprinting white type, etc)
- When you're just starting out, so is the Flattener Preview because you will start to get a feel for what is going to be bitmapped and what won't.
- XPress documents imported into InDesign should always be exported as Adobe InDesign Interchange and reimported one more time. .inx is the equivalent of the "thumb-nail drag" trick in XPress to clean up a document that is acting funny.
- XPress documents with placed EPS files may come in with the "Non-printing object" attribute checked on some of the EPS graphics. There's a script floating around that Dave Saunders wrote to fix this. Also, turning Overprint Preview will help you spot this (look for the disappearing objects).
- If you are placing EPS objects, be sure to set your import options to "Render preview from postscript" or your previews won't look right and/or may be deceiving.
- Don't every base your paragraph styles off of "Basic Paragraph Style", because if it ever changes in another document your type will suddenly change when you paste it from one document to another.
- Don't base anything off of "Basic Object Style" for the same reasons.
- Your defaults change whenever your change the options in a palette/panel without anything selected. Curious why every new object you draw comes in with a drop shadow or a 3pt rule, for example? You accidentally set those options with nothing selected.
- InDesign's paragraph composer may drive you (or your proof-readers) wonky because it will change the flow of text paragraph-wide if you redo a line of text. You can either adjust it for decent text flow and leave it alone OR turn it off by basing all your stylesheets on single-line composer. People in here will largely recommend option one, but if it doesn't work for your stuff, don't be afraid to disable it.
- Make sure to upgrade to the latest CS3 update, because CS3 v5.00 had some fairly crashy behavior.
- If CS3 feels really sluggish, try turning off page previews in the Pages palette.
- CS3 and OS X 10.5 are not fully compatible yet.
Best of luck! It's not really that big a change, but everything is slightly different so expect a bit of time to really get your feet under you. -
Can't make PDFs from Quark using Acorbat 8
I am using Quark 9
My acrobat is version 8.0
When I go to "print" to PDF, Quark prints places the file in it's printing cue.
It then stops.
I click resume printing and it begins to print but then stops and disappears from the cue, never creatign a PDF on my desktop.
Why it stops in the cue is beyond ne, it shoudlnt do that.
My os is 10.7.5
By the way, I can make a PDF by exporting from Quark as a PDF but that yeilds a very big file size wise.
For example a 50-54 meg PDF for a front of a standard size color postcard.
I need to be able to create a PDF of any documentI am working on and one thats a basic PDF, fro example a PDF of the postcard I am working on should be around 1-2 megs
So, I need help in getting acrobat to work properly for me with Quark 9
Any help appreciated
Jack FrischI use Quark's print window.
I set "printer" to Acrobat 8 and PPD to acrobat 8
I then do standard printer settings: I position my document as centered etc etc.
I then click Print
I've used Quark and Acrobat for uses on sight at jobs as well as home.
I've never had any issues.
I have'nt been able to get my current mac at home to work.
I'm tired of exporting my documents out of Quark as PDFs under Quark's "file" menu, its not the corrct way and doesnt provided control liek the Quark print window
It works ok ubtcreates very large file sizes, which is not alwasy good for me -
[AS] Beast of a script needs help converting from Quark 8 to InDesign CS5
First off, THANK YOU for even reading this post. Here's the dilema. I work in a publishing company that used an AppleScript from Quark 8 to automate our pagination from set text we pull from our sales reps worksheets. About 8 months ago we switched fully to InDesign CS5, but have had to hold onto Quark 8 to be able to keep running our pagination. I'd like to see if the geniuses (yes, I've been trolling these forums looking to solve this myself and seen some great problems fixed) on these forums can help me figure out the proper conversion I would need to be able to leave Quark 8 in the rearview.
Here's our current code... (I warned you it was a beast)

Problem with imported text from quark
Hi everyone
I have imported files from quark version 4 off a mac to Indesign cs4 on a windows PC. everything is fine apart from the text being a little messed up so i am happy enough with that. The problem is that when i drag and drop or copy and paste into a new document all the images will move over but new text will not work with the images.
By this i mean that when i try to type something over or near the graphics the graphics just vanish! you can drag them over the image and they vanish, then when you drag them away again them reappear!
Also the shapes that i move over have a thin white border on them where as the shapes that i create directly do not have this boarder.
Any help that you cold give me on this would be great!
Thanks in advance!!
SamThats it thank you!
There was a text wrap applied to all the graphics. its working perfectly now!!
Thank you again!!!

Import from Quark - iBooks Author?
Any chance this can import book layouts from Quark?
I have a book that was originally published by a service bureau using Quark. You'd be amazed at how hard it is to get those Quark files converted to another format at a reasonable price. The choice seems to be to pay $800 for Quark (ok, not huge money, but hate to pay that much for software I'll only use once) or to pay some service bureau even more to do the conversion for you.
Haven't been able to find someone willing to just load in quark and export to a more compatible format at a good price yet. Considering the work required (ie: 10 minutes) you would think someone would be in the business.
There would clearly be a business in this, or if Apple just wanted to get faster uptake on books they could create a webservice to convert Quark, Indesign or other common file formats to iBooks Author so people could get their books online quicker. You cannot bring in pre-designed page elements or test stylesheets (Quark Layout, InDesign Layouts) directly into iBooks Author to auto-magically maintain your books formatting as it was originallly laid out within your Quark layout files.
The best you can do for your Quark layout files is export all of the text into manageable chucks (unsure how large your book is) and begin importing into iBooks author. Just be aware you will most likely lose any stylsheets (bolding, colorization, paragraph formats) and will have to redo this within iBook Author. If you book has images you will have to get your hands on the original image files that were used during the production of your book as a Quark layout does not store any placed images within its document structure.
With the recent versions of Quark 9...you can now easily export your layouts as eBook formats..perhaps this is what you need done...
Again I am assuming how your book is layed out...perhaps it is as simple as you state. Doable yes. Time commitment yes. Costly? Depends who recreates it for you. -
Is it possible to convert from Quark 9 to ID 5.5
I would like to be able to convert from Quark 9 to ID 5.5 an vice versa, but the Markzware program Q2id is not competable with ID 5.5. Is there another sollution?
I have seen sollutions like saving it as a Quark 4 project, but that is not possible in Quark 9. Lowest possebility is saving it as quark project 8. But that wil not open in ID 5.5.
So if there is anybody who knows an sollution, please share it. : )You may post your question in the forum for InDesign.

Hi I just updated from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
I write DVD's using Final Cut Pro, creating a DVD that plays HD and Standard Definition on one disk.
My problem is when I used load the disk on my G5 it would ask if you want High Definition or Standard Definition, now it just defaults to Standard Definition.(I'm using Apple's DVD Player)
Can I fix this problem?Addendum: I read on a post here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=420169) about removing some kext files in order to trick OSX into thinking that there were no FireWire ports.
I followed the instructions and removed from /System/Library/Extensions/ the following files:
IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
IOFireWireAVC.kext
IOFireWireFamily.kext
IOFireWireIP.kext
IOFireWireSBP2.kext
I restarted and BAM...Snow Leopard booted crazy fast and the mouse and keyboard worked instantly.
The System Profiler says "No FireWire ports were found."
So this tells me that the FW port is probably the culprit and is messing up the installation.
So how do I hack the Mountain Lion installer and tell it to ignore the FW port, which is obviously quite dead? Or is there something I can do to the Base system that is similar? -
i buy used iphone 5s from japan and when i do activated it write need apple id and i no have that id because i buy from japan and i know in lebanon pleas tell me what i do
There is not a thing you can do except get the Apple ID and password of the previous owner...that iPhone is in Activation Lock mode and cannot be unlocked any other way. The Activation Lock is an anti-theft protection that cannot be bypassed. You very well may have a stolen iPhone so try contacting the who you bought it from and get your money back.

Creating PDF files from Quark causes font/image issues. PLEASE HELP.
After creating a PDF file using Adobe Acrobat Professional (using the file>Export to PDF option) from QuarkXPress version 7.3, my client sees and prints distorted letters with various fonts and they even sometimes see lines where they shouldn't be. I don't see these issues on my end, even when I print the documents. For example, I may have a headline of four words, the top of the words are shifted to one side, or sometimes even the top half of the letters are in a different color. Please help soon before I lose my clients... or my mind. Thanks.
We don't use Quark anymore, but I seem to remember that the export to pdf does not use Acrobat Distiller. It is Quark's own pdf maker. If the customer does have Acrobat Professional, then get them to print to the Adobe PDF 'printer' and seeif they get the same problem. They may need to open the Distiller app to set which output settings are used.

.pdf from quark has missing fonts
Hi. using acrobat professional 9.
Sorry if I have the wrong place...
I have a hi-res .pdf on my system at work made from an outside printer/vendor. Apparently the fonts are missing/not embedded. Looks like it was made on a macintosh computer because I cannot open the font files they gave us. I tried opening the file in Quark 7. Fonts are missing there also. I have the fonts installed on my system but the names are different. Ex. StneSansBld is Stone Sans Bold or something like that.... or they are on the system, but Quark won't read them.
Anyway, is there anything I can do with this .pdf without the fonts embedded? I thought of bringing it tinto Photoshop & flattening it, but then the text won't be as crisp, right? If I work with the Quark file, the text is all weird. The tracking values are off.
I am hoping there is a way to solve this from just using the .pdf & staying away from the Quark file made from 2004.
Thanks for any help...I need this file so that I can send it to another printer to print a lot cheaper.
Fonts show up in Acrobat correctly. Fonts appear to be embedded when I do a Ctrl + D. There is a list of fonts that I see. In Quark they look weird or it prints weird. If I drop this .pdf into InDesign...........I get a list of fonts that are missing. Even the same ones that are listed in Acrobat. I do not get it. I am trying to get the vendor to send a free .pdf with embedded fonts. All they have done so far is send PC versions of the fonts they used & that did not work for me........
This file is from 2004 so they may have problems..........I don't know
Appreciate your answers/help on this.
