Pixilated bar at bottom of Macbook screen, Pixilated bar at bottom of Macbook screen

I've been having this reoccuring problem with my macbook pro. The problem is that sometimes (no regular pattern noted yet) a pixilated gray pay appears at the bottom of my screen. I was able to take a screen shot of this (see below). This bar is on top of all open applications and the desktop it does respond when i move my mouse under it. The bar is not a defined size (once it took up 2/3 of my screen. I am, however, able to solve this by restarting my computer.
What would be causing this problem, and how can I resolve this issue?
Thanks
Colby

• I just updated to 10.9.2 and now my MacBook pro display is showing pixilated color ribbons all over my screen. What is going on??

I just updated my MacBook Pro to 10.9.2 and now I have pixilated bands of color running along shaded and bright areas of my display screen and graphics. I can not explain it any better than that. How can I fix this problem or should I go back to 10.9.1???

Which model MacBook Pro do you have (e.g., "15-inch Late 2011")?
Can you take a screenshot of the screen problem (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4391). If the screenshot looks normal, then you've probably a problem with the screen and not the GPU. If the screenshot shows the anomalies, then the problem is probably the GPU.

• Screen pixilating and will not start up on macbook pro.

I have a Macbook pro approx 6/7yrs old. (running on 10.4.?) When I turn it on the screen pixilates and breaks down and does not fully start up. Can see apple logo in centre of screen in the background. Anyone have any experience of this, or know what the problem may be? Urgently need for work! Thanks!

Is it the Apple USB Superdrive?

• Why does my MacBook Pro Retina screen display pixilated graphics when using the finder?

While this started just after the latest OS X update, each time I use the finder now to locate a graphic to upload, the graphic appears extremely pixelated. It does not matter which application I use to search and upload a graphic file, the graphic appears smaller and bleeds out. I just purchased the new Video Motion Pro video editing software, and every single graphic I upload to this application is pixelated. Has anyone else had any problems with their retina display after the last update?
Here are some examples of hi resolution graphics that now appear pixelated on my Retina screen:

If anyone is aware of an application or Apple software test that allows me to check my graphic card and retina display, please advise. I have performed multiple disk utility checks, restarts, etc., but nothing seems to help.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

• Sleep Issues & Screen Pixilation

Hello,
I have a new MacBook Pro 2.16 Intel Core Duo (with Mac OS 10.4.7) and am having some problems waking it from sleep. Probably 70% of the time there is only a black screen and the spinning beach ball from ****. Occasionally, this same screen is accompanied by pixilation on just the upper 10% of the viewing area. Any combination of hitting the space bar or track pad bar does nothing. It takes closing the lid, waiting a minute or so, and trying again. This usually allows for the window to come up where I can insert my password (Accounts security option).
First off, I have to ask what is the correct procedure to QUICKLY put a MacBook Pro to sleep? With all of my previous PowerBooks, I just closed the lid. Now, I have read some reports where MacBook Pros have failed to sleep and been found extremely hot inside carrying cases. With my job as a firefighter, quickly putting to sleep my MacBook Pro is a priority requirement.
Secondly, I have tried all the standard troubleshooting actions to correct this problem via resetting the PRAM, PMU, calibrating my batteries, repairing permissions, assuring that all software/firmware is up to date, etc. Any other suggestions?

Dr. Z.

This happens to me too all the time, but only if it goes to sleep with the lid open.
I haven't found a solution so far, but you don't have to close it and reopen again. All it takes is two presses of the Escape key and it goes right back to sleep. It's the same as clicking on Cancel in the login box.

• T60 14" SCREEN HAS DEVELOPED A FADED BAR AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN.

Hello all,
I have a T60 14" which has developed a constant faded bar at the bottom. the bar is about 10cm in height and makes the screen look like it has two contrast settings. Upper screen is normal and lower faded area looks in high contrast. The faded bar has a constant height of about 10cm from left to right of the screen. I have tested the laptop on external screens and they all work fine which leads me to believe that it is an issue with the screen or something in the screen assembly. It also flickers on occasion.
I have posted a picture for all to see at the link below and would be very greatful if someone can point me in the right direction.

By the way, the laptop is no longer under warranty it expired 6 weeks ago just my luck!
Id appreciate any help on this. Thanks in advance.

Hi brij001,
Welcome to the forum!
I think it's the lcd screen that needs to be replaced, my Mac had developed exact same issue, of course it was under warranty and therefore apple replaced the screen.
Another senior and very helpful member ajkula66 [George] is a thinkpad expert, he will probably better tell you what exactly is wrong with it.
Hope it helps.

• Macbook pro freezes & after a hard restart i get a grey screen & horiz bar

i have a intel 2.3ghz macbook pro that is freezing up... and the only way to unfreeze it is to do a hard restart.... then when it is starting i get a grey screen with a while apple logo and a horizontal progress bar near the bottom of the screen? the computer seems to run fine after it starts until it freezes again... usually it freezes a couple of times a day... i have run disk utility and repaired the permissions and also done a disc check.. the disc check said that the hard drive was ok.... i have backed it up via time machine and superduper back up... my laptop is running osx 10.6.7 and it says that the software is up to date... the hard drive is a 500 gig hitachi and was replaced a couple of months ago... i have 105 gigs of free space... any ideas on what is going on? and what i can do to fix it... i am heading out of the country for a couple of weeks on monday...

I reloaded OS X 10.6 with the install disk (CD) and then upgraded back to 10.6.6 using the downloadable 10.6.6 Update Combo file from the Apple site. Below was the exact sequence:
1. Download 10.6.6 Update Combo file connected via a direct ethernet connection. I wasn't able to accomplish the download via wireless because my computer crashed before I could get the entire file. I saved this on an external hard drive, also, just in case. I also backed up vital files.
2. Reinstall 10.6 via install disk. Put disk in drive and restart holding down "C", per the instruction blurb on the CD. This took about 45 min. Note that the "progress" time didn't seem to match what was going on.
3. After the 10.6 install was complete, I opened and ran the 10.6.6 Update Combo
After (3), everything has been fine. Total time was about 1 hr. All of my files/programs seem to have made it through untouched.
I've been tempted to try the 10.6.7 Update, but am still gunshy from the experience. I have a feeling that if one were to use the 10.6.7 Update Combo in (3), things would work out fine. I'd love to know if this is the case, but for right now, I'm pretty happy that my computer is back to normal. Hope this helps.
BTW I think you can probably restore via Time Machine, but the above is what I did.

• MacBook Pro no icons or tool bar just a blank screen.

My MacBook Pro was dead for a few months. When I got new charger for it took a long time to start up a grey screen with bar across the bottom it came on with the main blue pink starry sky. It has no tool bar no icons my background picture is gone. When it was working sometimes the date and time would set back to a date in the past too. Anyone know what might be going on?

Have you tried another reboot.
Run repair disk , Repair permissions, from your Installation Disk that shipped with your Mac

• Macbook Black A1181 screen on start up perfect, then with usage pixels fail along bottom of screen. How do I fix?

This Issue confuses me and I have moderate computer knowledge but very little LCD knowledge.
The Screen will start up just fine, and about 20-30 minutes into using the laptop the LCD shows what appears to be dead pixels by start meni Icons and the lower taskbar (based on windows). It used to be JUST the start menu button but has spread to the enture lower task bar like a disease. Am I looking at a screen swap out, a cord connected to the screen from the logic board, or a failing graphics card? Ideas and fixes? I assume it will eventually become unreadable if it spreads upward. Im usually ok with it but the bottom portion today was awful at one point so I thought I would jump on and ask some experts.
I do solder work so if it is something that bad, I can operate on it. I currently have the keyboard loose and macbook screws out so I can check any suggestions on hardware.
Help please.

Going to ask one more series here for me personally for reference sake.
Could you tell me the failure point of this hardware on the display, what lesser component is actually faulty on the LCD other than the whole LCD itself
What are actually the root causes/triggers of this type of failure besides usage (if any) and it is common?
Much appreciated

• My laptop won't restart? The bar at the bottom of the gray screen starts to fill up but half way through, my computer shuts down?

My macbook pro 2009 started freezing, so I tried to turn it off and back on, but it wouldn't get off of the gray screen. I went to utilities and tried to repair my disc but it said it couldn't be repaired and that leaves me here with a gray screen, a new bar at the bottom, and random shut downs.

If you reformat the drive, then everything on the computer will be deleted. If you cannot access the hard drive at all in order to backup your work, it will all be lost.
That statement means that if you are trying to reinstall Lion or later, then the installer is going to verify that you own the software by requesting your Apple ID and passwword.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

• Shadows bottom of my screen on my new MacBook air

I have 9 little shadows running across the bottom of my screen on my Macbook Air 13inch. Does anyone else have this or know how I can fix this?

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: command+Shift+F).
If you are in full screen mode then hover the mouse to the top to make the Navigation Toolbar and Tab bar appear.
You can click the Maximize button at the top right to leave full screen mode or right click empty space on a toolbar and use "Exit Full Screen Mode" or press F11.
When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
