Pls help Session manipulation in Jsp

Hi,
In JSP, I wanna check whether user has logged in, but it doesn't work, could you pls help?
I guess the reason is I didn't initiate session attribute of userid. If it is true, could u pls tell me how to do that?
or, how to know the attribute not set yet?

or, how to know the attribute not set yet?Are you sure you are putting an attribute by name "userid" in the session soon after/during login?Otherwise you will get null on doing a getAttribute.
Do something like session.setAttribute("userid",sUserId); during login.
jsp_userid=session.getAttribute("userid").toString();And don't do the above. your session.getAttribute("userid") may well return null
Make it something like
jsp_userid=(String)session.getAttribute("userid");
if(jsp_userid==null)

Unknown problem with JSP, JavaScript - Pls help

Hi Friends,
I am facing a strange problem. Explained it below. Kindly help me as it is really affecting my work. Thanks in advance.
I am working on building a web application using jsp, servlet, ejb. the IDE used is WSAD 5.1.2.
I have the below :
1 JSP - Input page - for user input entry
2. Java script1 - For all client side validations
Java script2 - For handling the data submission to servlet (as selected by user)
Javascript3 - Header & Menu Bar
3 Servlet - This actually retrieves the values from the hidden parameters, sets them in session and redirects the control back to the jsp.
Logic for one small iteration : Two drop downs are there. On selecting the first drop down the second drop down should be populated and the first drop down should display the user selected value.
1. When the user selects the first drop down onchange() event gets fired which calls a method in the javascript.
2. In the javascript I set the value of a hidden form field to the selected combo index and submit the form to the servlet
3. In the servlet, I retrieve the hidden request parameter (Index),
set the index in session. Do my business logic based on the value of the index. Set the collection (to be displayed) in second drop down in session.
4. Send the response back to the JSP.
5. In the JSP, we have a method which is called during the onload() event of the body
6. This method sets the user selected values in appropriate controls(by taking from session)
Problem faced: I have a javascript which creates the menu bar for my application and this i've included it in my jsp. I dont know whats wrong with this javascript, when it is commented out the page works perfectly fine. Both the user selected value and the collection are loaded exactly as expected. But when it is included the collection is loaded in the second drop down but the selected index of the first drop down is not set - the drop down gets reset to the default value.
Also on body load of my jsp, I call a javascript method which sets the current date in one text field of my form. Even this is not working fine when I include this javascript. I don't see any script error in this javascript in my browser though. Strange but guess something basic :(
I'm sure there is nothing to do with session. I've tried printing the entire flow. The Servlet sets the values correctly in session and they are also correctly available in the JSP page. The JSP also gets loaded with the user selected values but something happens on page load which clears the values to default.
Am also confused in what way javascript is related to this, coz when I remove it things are working fine.
Am really helpless here pls do the needful. any help is appreciated.

Implementing session timeout in JSP - - Urgent help !

I have a requirement where I need to write a session timeout functionality in a JSP such that the page is redirected to a different page if there is no activity for 5 min.
I tried the following :
1.On the onload of my JSP, i created a new session from the current request using the following code snippet :

2. Then on any action performed on the JSP, i called the collowing JS function before invoking the server side code.

You are confusing java with javascript.
These two things are not the same.
The lifecycle goes something like this
1 - Request is made to server
2 - Java/JSP runs java code, produces HTML page
3 - java stops running
4 - html is sent to browser, and javascript starts running.
You cannot call java code from browser events (such as onload, onclick, onchange...) The only way to run java code again is to submit a request (normally by submitting a form, or clicking a link. )
If you want a javascript solution, in IE, use the window.setTimeout() method to execute some javascript code after a certain period of time.
A more generic approach would be to use the refresh header. Set the timeout for the refresh header to be 300 seconds. If the user stays on the same page for more than 5 minutes, it will redirect to the new page.

Urgent: Sessions problem pls help me

Its already late to post this problem.pls help me urgently.
I have a servlet & two jsp's. first i request servlet, it processes something and forwards request to my first jsp. In that jsp on a button click, i'm displaying a new popup by calling showModalDialog. this dialog gets data from the same servlet but it forwards to my second jsp.(second jsp can be seen in dialog)
Now if i submit form from my second(dialog) jsp, the servlet reports that session has expired. I tried a lot but invain. any one who helps me is appreciated well by all of our forum.

It could be that you have cookies turned off and you're not using URL Rewriting.
In J2EE, the first time your browser makes a request to the server, the server responds and appends a SESSION_ID parameter to the request as well as storing a cookie with the SESSION_ID.
The second time your browser makes a request, the server checks for the cookie. If it doesn't exist it checks for the parameter. If neither exist the server assumes its the first time your browser has made a request and behaves as describe in the previous paragraph.
In your case when you submit the form if you have disabled cookies and the action attribute doesn't have the SESSION_ID paramter appended to the url, the browser will assume it's a first request. The user will not be logged in, hence your session has expired error.
To fix this you need to encode the URL in your JSP. You can use the struts html:rewrite tag or the HttpServletReponse.encodeURL method, or if you're using JSP 2.0 the JSTL c:url tag.

May I ask why have you done it?
If it is related to printing of the list then it is of no use.But it IS of use. The objects compEmployees is in scope.

A problem in RMI with JSP..pls help

RMI with Java is working fine,but...
1. I am facing a problem when i use RMI with JSP..its throwing an exception during "Naming.lookup"..here is my code snippet:

Login session variable - pls help before i slot myself

im brand new to this guys and really struggling with logging
in a member to their particular account as opposed to a general
members section using dreamweavers login application and some basic
php coding.
i just cant seem to figure it out it (im stuck on the session
variables i think..) and unfortunately my php is very poor at them
moment!

below is the dreamweaver generated code from its basic login

now i have a new problem....the Tomcat server cannot find its class file. i have placed the class file in C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Tomcat 4.1\webapps\mywork\WEB-INF\classes.

Heard that to deploy local bean in weblogic 7.0, I need to put my war
file and ejb jar files in the ear file. My client servlet contains the
following:
AccessControlLocalHome accessControlLocalHome =
(AccessControlLocalHome)ctx.lookup("AccessControlLocalHome");
But it failed miserably with the exception
javax.naming.LinkException: . Root exception is
javax.naming.NameNotFoundExcept

Sql error in request.jsp - pls help

hi every1, can some1 pls help me. the situation is:- when someone renewed a book the date_Return has to be increased by 7 days.
to test i'm using the following:-

1) The easiest way to do the update would be to use your DBMSs
built-in date functionality. If date_Return is a date datatype
in your DBMS then there should be a function to add a number of
days to it. For example, in Sybase, you could write your UPDATE
statement as:
"update resources set date_Return = DateAdd(day, 7, date_Return)".
2) If, by UK date, you mean day-month-year, you can format the date
using the java.text.SimpleDateFormat.

How to validate a session object in jsp?

i am facing a problem.The problem is how to validate the session object object in jsp.I have written a java script by using a defined function as setInterval and has given 5 mintues if the user is idle and will show a pop up menu before time out the session but in case of page active still this pop up menu is coming. The java script as follows.

The reason for doing this is when ever i come to this user.jsp from account.jsp with a different account number this user.jsp is not refreshed and i still
see the same old user.jsp for the previous account that i naviated before. Also please let me know if there is any other approach to acheive this taskDoes refreshing the page by pushing F5 solve the problem?
If so, then the browser is caching the page, despite your attempts to stop it.

Session problem in JSP portlet

Hi,
I have a jsp portlet. In this jsp i am creating a session and i am putting some value in session. There is navigation from this jsp to second jsp(not portlet) and from this jsp to third jsp(again this is also not a portlet). Now in third jsp i am trying to retrieve the value from session. But i am getting null value.
In provider i given <session>true</session> element. While registering provider with portal given login frequency 'once per user session'.
The code in first jsp is:
PortletRenderRequest portletRequest = (PortletRenderRequest) request.getAttribute(HttpProvider.PORTLET_RENDER_REQUEST);

From the code i found that the session itself is not created.

The Problem is that the variable Leave_Reason is declared as a local variable inside a if block. So the scope of the variable is not visible outside the if block...
