PODCast updates

Hi,
I hope someone can help me with this. I publish a PODCast to users. I created a little script that allows me to upload the mp3 files for my feed. It then adds the feed to my RSS list. The block it adds looks like the example below:

The issue is that if I get an update and create an updated MP3 an hour later and I upload it it then created the correct new time stamp "<pubDate>Thu, 04 May 2006 20:11:42 GMT</pubDate>" it then would be 21:11:00 for example. However, my IPod does not recognize that this time stamp has changed and does not re-download the updated file.
What can I do in my feed to make the IPod recognize that this is a updated file that need to be downloaded again?
Same issue if with Videos and Images.
Is there maybe a tag to force a re-download on IPods that have an older time stamp?
I hope I make sense with this, if not please ask questions. I am very happy for any assistance I could get.
Best wishes,
thom

This has absolutely nothing to do with the iPod.
You should post over at the Podcasting forum.

  • Podcast update time

    Hi all,
How do I set the time at which Podcasts update during the day in iTunes?

I also want to know how to change/set the time that itunes checks for updates of podcasts. If I look in my itunes prefs I see on the podcasts tab.... Check for new episodes with a dropdown. I have "Every day" selected. Fine. Under the dropdown it says "Next check tomorrow 6:07 PM". That is the time that I dowloaded my first podcast and it hasn't changed since.
I would like to make that time earlier in the day so when I get home I can see my girlfriends Kareena, Cali and Amanda without having to wait for the downloads to complete. Obviously this is a fairly critical situation.
Any help on this? I understand what the previous answer was all about. I don't care about when the podcasters update their content, I want to change the time when my itunes app goes off to see if any subscribed podcasts have changed.
    TIA,
    Beef

if you are subscribed to the Hardwell podcast... quickly open the Podcast app and delete the most recent Hardwell podcast from 3/22.
for some reason that's causing the crash. i've deleted and it works fine again.

  • Hard Crash on Podcast update?

A week ago I subscribed to my first podcast (well, like 6 of them, really), and last night between 3am and 7 am my whole computer crashed. I leave it on all the time, so I'm not sure exactly when or why it crashed, I just know that I woke up and I could hear the fans in the computer going full blast.
This morning I started it up, and tried looking through various logs, but there was nothing. I started up Safari and iTunes, hit Play, and about 3 seconds later the whole computer crashed. No response from mouse/keyboard, and the song is playing like a broken record - a half second clip being repeated over and over.
Press and hold power button for 10-15 seconds, comp shuts down. Start it back up, open iTunes and Safari, but this time play a different song (I've had iTunes do this to me before with a specific song - I figured it was corrupted on disk). Same thing, about 3 seconds later the whole system is frozen. This time I notice in the status window that it's updating a podcast.
Hold power button, restart, just open Safari to do the web browsing I wanted, and deal with iTunes later. When I got around to iTunes, I pulled the network cable (not on the internet = no podcast update), was able to play both songs that it crashed on. But when I plugged the internet back in and checked out my current subscriptions, they were all current!
I've got a subscription to the MAKE magazine video podcast, and it was the only one to update today, with a PDF. Strangely though, I have the PDF, so it downloaded before(?) one of the crashes.
I have to believe my problem is directly related to the podcast, so I'm wondering if there's anyone else with the same problem, or an idea on how I can fix it? I've set my podcasts to manual update instead of daily, at least that way if this happens again it will be easier to correlate.

i'm using the same book you are, but i don't use Motion. i do however run FCP and AE at the same time and constently push the book - without crashing. my projects are intensive with cuts and filters/effects. i jump between the programs with Automatic duck constantly.
do you think it might be the graphics card?

  • Itunes always crashes on podcast update.

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but the search didn't turn up anything that was relavent to my specific problem. As stated in the title, itunes crashes during podcast updates. It happened both before and after the version upgrade. Itunes works fine without the podcast updates, however, I would like to continue to get my episodes of "Ask a Ninja", which I find hilarious. Without fail, it will crash upon updates. Its not due to a particular podcast or nething because even when I update one by one, it will still crash. I can still import songs from CD's and update the pod itself.
    Thanks.

  • Why Does IT Take SOOOOO Long To Get New Shows And Podcast Updates!!!!!

Why Does IT Take SOOOOO Long To Get New Shows And Podcast Updates!!!!! It seems to me that it takes and unusually long time for TV shows to be uploaded to itunes and it takes FOREVER (VH1) to get Podcast updates. Also I notice that Vh1's Best Week Ever is a hit or miss deal. Some weeks it's on iTunes and some weeks it's not......why?
    Paul

The iTunes store simply provides a link to the originating podcast server.
When the podcast owner puts a new episode up, it is available.

  • Link to report an issue with Podcast update

Someone posted a link so we could report an issue with the Podcast app the last time there were issues with an upgrade.
I sync with my laptop iTunes. Since this latest update to the app, when I delete a podcast in iTunes on my laptop it will not delete on my i devices during a sync with my laptop. It just grays them out and leaves them on my device. It looks like I can manually delete them, but when you click the edit function to delete them, they are no longer grayed out, so you can't tell which to delete and which to keep.
I don't do anything with the cloud, because I have limited wifi service and do most of my updating at a free wifi hotspot.
If someone has that online link on where to report issues, I would appreciate you posting it again and this time I will save it.

  • Apple has Major Issue with Podcast Updating

I have been getting reports from a large number of the folks we represent at RawVoice indicating they are having the same issue with the podcast listings updating in iTunes.
We are going to poll our 6000 podcasters and have them start watching this more closely. Everything has been working perfectly for such a long time most of us never check iTunes anymore.
It could be some update that iTunes is doing but it is negatively effecting many podcasters because the listeners do not know enough to hit Refresh on the subscription listing.
I know my download numbers are way down over the past week because it looks like I have not updated my show. Please check your podcast listings. If you see that they are not updating within a couple of hours of posting start submitting trouble tickets.
Something is broke and I don't think Apple is aware of it. I am getting standard boiler plate responses back from tech support. But if they have enough submissions then they will know something is jacked up.
Here is the info to submit a ticket, you will have to be persistent or you will not get a response.
http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ - click on 'Other iTunes Store Features' in the list and then on 'Podcasts'.

try taking down the power to the ATV since the last update. Then power back on.

  • ITunes 10.6.3 freezing during podcast updates

I am wondering if anyone else is having a problem with iTunes after updating to the latest version of Xcode from Mac app store.  Every time I open the app and try to modify a podcast I am subscribed to, I get the beachball and have to force quit the application.  Upon reopening the application, all the updates I made are gone.
The only thing I remember doing is updating Xcode to the latest version in the Mac app store, but I am not sure what else has changed.  I tried redownloading and installing iTunes again, but it didn't help.  I am running the latest version of Lion on an iMac 24".
Any help anyone can provide would be great.
    Thanks.
    Nick

I've that also, this bug is very annoying. All your old podcast subscription are unavailable to be refreshed. I think it's a bug from the latest version of iTunes, because not doing any other update recently.

  • Why do podcasts update more quickly on my ipad with iOS 6.1.3 than on my iPhone 5s with 7.0.4?

I subscribe to a few daily podcasts (Dan Patrick Show and The Tony Kornheiser Show). They will auto download on my iPad running iOS 6 without any issues. But my iPhone 5s running 7 will not recognize the new shows for hours or days after they have been on my iPad.
Anyone else run into this problem? This is why I am loathe to update my iPad.

Could I trade it in for an iPad mini with iOS 6.
That would depend on two things:
    1) Finding an iPad that had iOS6 pre-installed
    2) Whether the store would accept your iPad as trade in. Most won't.

  • Podcasts update, music doesn't. Pls help.

Bought a fifth gen ipod a while back and it's been working great. But lately it's been getting a little slow locating songs, maybe a couple of seconds before it plays the next song. So i thought i'd restore the ipod and download my library back onto it, hoping that the songs would sort better. Bad idea. I had all sorts of trouble and went through the five r's to fix it. Everything works fine now except that when i update the ipod the only thing that shows up is my podcasts. The update process just skips my music. everything is set to work automatically in the options menu, so i'm not sure what to do at this point. i'd appreciate any help anyone can give.

Well, it's a good thing the songs play in iTunes. As far as authorization goes, the only songs you would have to authorize are songs that are purchased from the iTunes music store. If the songs are from CD's or other downloads, you don't have to worry about it. (FYI: authorizing iTunes music store content just means that you play the song in iTunes and enter your password, when prompted, before you transfer the files to the iPod).
After you restore your iPod, you have to set it up in iTunes again (when it asks you to name it and register it and all that). While doing this, there is an option to "Automatically update all songs and playlists" If you leave that checked, your iPod will update automatically when it is connected to your computer. If you uncheck it, you have to manually update your iPod.
    Try this:
Connect your iPod, and let it go through any automatic update that it does when connected.
Click on Edit, click on Preferences, click on the iPod tab.
Click on Music tab, and make sure everything is set to the following:
"Automatically update all songs and playlists" is checked
"Only update checked songs" is UNchecked
    "Enable disk use" is UNchecked
Make sure your settings match those, and then click File > Update iPod and see if that puts your music on your iPod. Reply back and let me know what happens.
    Best of luck!

  • Order of Podcast updates in iPod sync

I'm not sure if this really belongs here or over in the iPod side, but it's podcast related. It's also a bug I can recreate easily, but I no longer know how to submit bug reports
I have my iTunes update only unplayed Podcasts to my iPod. And I thought for a long time this was working; I'd play podcast "foo", I'd update, and "foo" was gone from the Podcasts list on the iPod. But the other day, I noticed I had stale Podcasts listed in my Music->Genre->Podcast list on the iPod. So I poked at it again...and if I do a second sync immediately afterwards, it cleans those up. Which makes me think that the order is:
    1) Update all tracks on iPod (probably also downloads played information and playcounts)
    2) Update the podcast listing in iTunes with what has been played
    3) Send list of Podcasts to iPod
Since the playcount is still 0 (or the played flag is off) in step 1, the podcasts are left there. Then since it's correct in #3, it doesn't list them. It seems like the correct order should be:
    1) Download playcounts/played flags and update library
    2) Update podcast listing in iTunes
    3) Generate list of updated files to send to iPod; updated DB of playcounts, etc.
    4) Update iPod tracks with results of #3
    5) Update iPod Podcast listing.
Now, for me this is more odd than annoying (I have a 60G and am nowhere near filling it). But for someone with a 20G who syncs podcasts and then as much as possible from a playlist (I think you can do that), the extra stale podcasts mean less music. Any way to send this bug report in to Apple and hope for a fix for it in 6.0.3? I guess a valid workaround is to connect the iPod, let it update, then select file->update iPod and let it update again (I haven't tried that, but it should work).

This question is probably not going to get a lot of answers in the Printing Forum. Maybe the "Using Mac OS X Leopard" forum will offer some help.

  • Podcast update button gone?

Just upgraded to iTunes 7 and I don't see the update button that I used to see when I selected Library | Podcasts. How do I tell iTunes to manually update my podcasts en masse (rather than wait for the scheduled download)?

It is at bottom now. When in podcast viewing screen look for button at bottom right of iTunes window. It is not labelled but when you put mouse over button it will tell you what it is.

  • Podcast updates direct to phone?

I dont think this is possible, but if it is can someone advise me how to do it.
With my subscribed podcasts can new ones automaticaly download through wifi or 3G to my iPhone 3GS rather than having to have my computer turned on and down load them through that iTunes and then having to sync my phone.
If this isnt available then if anyone from Apple is readin this maybe it can be suggested a s future improvement. Would be great when away from computer for days at a time to have this update automatically eg when away with work or on holiday

Kind of. At the bottom of your list of podcasts on the iPhone, you'll see an option to "Ger More Episodes . . ." Clicking that will take you to the iTunes Store, where you can manually download more podcasts. But I don't think the native iPod app on the iPhones will download new podcasts in the background, like iTunes on your computer does. There may be other apps in the App Store that offer this functionality.

  • ITunes podcast update maxes out both cores on MBP 2.16

On my new macBook Pro 2.16Ghz, there aren't too many normal operations that will run my cpu cores up to 100% each, but updating my podcasts in iTunes does it every time.
Not even transcoding multiple h.264 video files gets my cpu above 50%. why is it that updating my podcast xml feeds in iTunes maxes out both cores? If it starts taking more than a few seconds to update, my fans kick in and start getting progressively louder until the update completes or I cancel the update. Has anyone one else experienced this? is this a flaw in the itunes binary?
I have about 8 feeds that I'm subscribed to (diggnation, twit, eMacCast, dl.tv, etc).

it only happens when a feed starts to take too long to update (5-10+ seconds). some feeds just kind of hang when its trying to update. it seems like its stuck in a loop or something like that.

  • Idea: podcasts update directly to phone

I don't know if there's been any discussion about this, but wouldn't it be cool if podcasts could update directly to the iphone... I mean apple has already integrated the iTunes store to the iphone, why not just add a little function to update podcasts you're subscribed to...
For me, I like to get the NPR hourly news update, and I would love it if I could just download it right to my phone and get a little news update between classes, instead of having to pull out my laptop, update my podcasts, and sync my iphone...
    anyone though about this?

That sounds like "the way it should be" except that ATT is not going to allow iTunes to use that much bandwidth so you would have to be connected to WiFi networks all day.
But, I'm confused. Are you able to find and download any podcast using iTunes on the iPhone? I can't find any of the podcasts that I listen to. All I get is songs that you have to pay for. Shouldn't we be able to get podcasts? It's not like it would take up ATT bandwidth.
Are they in the process of converting the Music Store for iPhone?
