POP Email Deleted Message Bug

On my work POP email account (needs to be non-IMAP) if I delete an email from the phone it shows back up as an unread email if I get a new email on any of my email accounts (but only in the hub/home screen) and it does not show up in my work email account even though it says there is an unread message.
I have to "delete from handheld and server" to stop the message from reappearing on my phone.
You're going to say the server is telling the phone it's still there.  Ok, so why then does it not show up in the email account and only on the hub screen.  As soon as I enter the hub the message is no longer anywhere to be found, or if I read the unread message that came in, the deleted message goes away on the home screen.
Of course when I get another new message it's there again...

I don't know if this applies to your situation, but I've noticed 2 reasons this might occur, one from personal experience and the other from reading the forums.
For me, I had trouble downloading email with pictures when I was on EDGE because as soon as I got the alert, I went to look at the email. However, if I backed up and waited a couple minutes, it had time to download the everything and I was able to view it fine.
The other problem I've seen was people complaining about this until they realized they had filled the phone with so many songs and movies, there wasn't enough room left on the phone to download the pictures.
Yours sounds like it might be the first. Give it a sec to download the whole file before opening it. If that doesn't help I'm all out of answers. Sorry!
Good Luck,
Shaun

  • POP Emails disappearing from email server

I have a POP email address, set up on both my iPhone5 and laptop Outlook. All mail is coming to my phone. Some of the messages aren't showing up on Outlook. And all of the messages are deleted from my mail server (which is hosted by a local company in Houston).
All the correct boxes are checked.
On iPhone Settings>Mail>Advanced, "Delete from Server" is selected to "Never."
In Outlook, under the specific account settings, the box that says "Leave copy on the server" is checked.
I called mail provider and went through this with them. They had me re-check those boxes and, of course, they were correct. (I have three other email accounts on my phone and a bunch for business on Outlook) and every other address is working fine.
The provider's answer was that it must be a device problem and that I should check with Apple or AT&T.
Just wondering if anyone else has seen the same problem.

That's because POP will delete messages from the server entirely when it downloads them. Set up Outlook to use IMAP instead. If you can set up the iPhone and iPad to use IMAP, there is no reason you can't set up your computer to use IMAP.

  • HELP!!!  I deleted a POP email account w/4000+ messages in it and they disappeared

I have been told all my messages are gone forever but I find that just hard to believe.  If this were a Windows machine I could recover them because it just deletes the first character in the name of the file.  Am I to believe that Apple doesn't have something even remotely similar?
I have been able to recover a few hundred from my iPhone which also had access to the POP account but many years of emails are just not there.
I thought for sure I could delete the account and recreate it as I was making it an IMAP account but I'm having no luck getting most of my life for the past 4 years back.  (And yes, I know, I should have backed up - but I hadn't in over a year.)  Lazy I know so please don't rub it in.
I drove 100 miles to go to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store and that is how I learned to recover the ones on the phone but that was a painfully slow process of doing them pretty much one at a time because I'd select 50 or so and some would be able to be moved and some wouldn't - which was frustrating so I finally just went through and kept the ones that were most important.
Anyone got any good news or ideas for me to try?

    Thomas,
"Note that you were warned that this would happen and approved it.  When you delete an e-mail account in Mail, you are shown a message like the following:"
You didn't read my problem - I said I deleted a POP email account.  I always read the messages that pop up and in Mail when you delete a POP account - IT DOESN'T TELL YOU NUTHIN!  It just deletes it - which *** for me.  Fortunately, I had an iPhone and on that device I had about a 1000 messages that I could recover but on all my POP accounts I download them from the server onto my Mac so they were only on Mail (the really old ones that I wanted to keep.)  I had to move them into another directory one by one basically because when I would move 50 some of them would move and some wouldn't and I never did figure out that problem.  Basically the ones that would not move are the ones that were associated with my domain changes with GoDaddy, and there were a lot of those.  Have no idea as to why only those were resistant to moving but I can get all that data from GoDaddy anyway.
This thread is now moot seeing as how I've recovered everything I can and am going to just move on - and back up more often.  ;-)
Apple and Mail need to rewrite that program to include a WARNING MESSAGE when deleting an Account in Mail that says ALL YOUR MESSAGES ARE GOING TO DISAPPEAR NEVER TO RETURN IF YOU DELETE THIS ACCOUNT, SO YOU DANG WELL BETTER HAVE A BACK UP IF YOU WANT TO KEEP ANYTHING BEFORE PRESSING THAT MINUS SYMBOL!  ;-)

  • How can I make my email POP account delete emails?

I use a POP email account. Every time I refresh my email, it brings back all the emails I just deleted.  very frustrating
I set the Advanced settings to Remove...After one day, UseSSL...OFF, Delete from server...When removed from Inbox, Server Port...110,S/MIME...OFF.
Why there is no Remove...Immediately is beyond me.
When I delete emails I want to delete them totally.  Email is one of the main reasons I got an iPad.  Constantly downloading the same emails you deleted extremely limits the usefulness of the iPad2.
    Is there a fix?
Why doesn't the iPad provide the same functionality for POP accounts as it does for IMAP accounts?

When I am in mail, I now click back through the navigation boxes on the top left of the screen.  If I am in an email there is a block at the top left of the screen titled "All Inboxes" (43).  The number changes.  click "All Inboxes"  The email list for "All Inboxes" slides in from the left.  Click the navigation arrow titled "Mailboxes" on the top left of the email list.  The "Mailboxes" list slides in to replace "All Inboxes".  The list shows "Inboxes" and "Accounts".  I click the account where I want to delete messages.  I click the "Trash" basket.  The "Trash" bin slides onto the screen.  I click the "Edit" block in the upper right corner.  I select the red "Delete All" in the lower left.  This is a little bit of work.  It currently prevents the emails from constantly coming back to my inboxes.
My ISP mail provider also appeared to update their system.  I checked their website for directions on using an iPad.  Their suggestions helped.

I have a  macbook, an ipad, and an iphone with the Mail app on all three synced through icloud, but when I read and delete emails on my phone, the inbox on my ipad is not update, so I have to go through and mark as read or delete messages again. How can I sync my iphone and ipad? (it seems like each is synced only to my laptop, so don't synchronize until I go home and use my laptop.

POP: yahoo, aol, comcast/time warnder/road runner
Imap: google, hotmail, and more including icloud.
If you want to use multiple devices - move to imap, I would even say "exchange", but Google does not support free exchange anymore, since January of that year. So Ironically  Icloud or Hotmail would be my choices right now.
To find out more about what happens to you, search on Google "difference between pop and imap"

  • Outlook 2007 Email Sync Not Deleting Messages

Can someone help me understand how sync is 'supposed' to work? I access my POP emails and I understand that the iPhone does not delete the emails from the server. I wish they would fix that since I'm choosing the option to 'Delete from server'. However, if I delete the messages in Outlook and then perform a sync, the emails show up as new unread emails on the iphone. WHAT IS HAPPENING?? This is extremely frustrating since it seems that common sense indicates 'sync' would do just that?
If someone has figured out how to fix this, please email me at [email protected] Thanks in advance.

With a POP account, the iPhone's mail client can delete messages from the server when downloaded with the following settings available by account.
    Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    Select the POP account.
Select Advanced for the account settings.
Under Incoming Settings at Delete from Server, the options are:
    Never
    Seven Days
    When removed from Inbox
The iPhone sync process with iTunes does not sync account mailboxes and messages.
Although a POP account can be accessed with more than one email client, it is designed to be accessed with a single email client only.
If you want the same new messages that are received at the incoming mail server server available with both Outlook and with the iPhone's mail client, you need to select Never for remove messages from the server with the account settings with Outlook, and with the iPhone's mail client.
When accessing an email account with multiple email clients, an IMAP account is preferable since all server stored mailboxes for the account are kept synchronized with the server automatically with each email client used to access the account.
Unless you aren't concerned about receiving spam at your Gmail address, you should never provide your email address out in the open at a public forum such as this.

  • Deleted messages in POP account not visible in Trash

Having a problem with deleting messages on my wife's iBook G4 (Tiger). For some reason there are 2 Trash sub-folders under the main Trash icon. One is labeled "On My Mac", and the other is labeled "POP Account".
Messages deleted from the Inbox go to the "POP Account" trash, but are not visible on the screen (clicking on the Trash icon in Mail). The deleted message can be found using finder: home/library/mail/[email protected]/Deleted Messages/Messages/name of deleted message (which is a 5 digit number followed by .emlx)
If I drag a message from the Inbox to the "On My Mac" trash folder, the message will be visible in that folder as well as when clicking on the main Trash icon.
I have set the mail account preference to erase deleted mail after one month, also selected Rebuild the mailbox with no effect on getting the deleted messages in the POP account to show.
Any suggestions on how to show the deleted messages in the Trash folder would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Joe

For some reason there are 2 Trash sub-folders under the
main Trash icon. One is labeled "On My Mac", and the other
    is labeled "POP Account".
This is normal. The "On My Mac" named Trash mailbox is used when selecting a message for deletion that is located in any user created "On My Mac" mailbox.
The POP account's Trash mailbox may have some corruption. After confirming all existing messages marked for deletion that are located in the account's Trash mailbox can be deleted, quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this account named folder > Deleted Messages.mbox.
Delete the Deleted Messages.mbox folder and empty the Trash.
Launch Mail and a new Deleted Messages.mbox folder will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder when selecting the next message for deletion that is located in any of the accounts' mailboxes - Inbox, Sent, etc.

  • Deleting Messages from Pop Server

I downloaded the new software and now my phone is deleting messages from the server when I delete the message from my phone. I checked the phone settings and it was set on "never" under deleting from server. Is this a bug in the new software. Is there a fix?

    Wjosten,
    Thanks for your continued responses.
How old is the info you got regarding Earthlink settings? I went through both my account settings, and my Webmail settings, and could not find the exact settings below. In fact, this seems to be more of a setting when you set up a desktop mail client (e.g. Part of Outlook setup). See here for an example: http://support.earthlink.net/articles/email/setting-up-outlook-2007-to-send-and- receive-email.php (it is on the last screenshot)
Regardless, I only use the webmail, and I thought that if I delete mail on the iPhone, then the setting on the iPhone to delete mail from the server should do that.
Any thoughts on whether there is something buggy with the iPhone? I had another strange iPhone problem which was fixed by deleting the acccount, logging into Gmail and recreating the account. The problem was that Gmail on the iPhone would let me send new mail, but if I tried to Reply to a message, it would not work and the error was that there was no password!

  • Selectively deleting messages with POP.

    Hi All,
So I've yet to figure out how to get IMAP working my Yahoo email because I've got a @pacbell.net domain name... So I'm using POP for now.
On my last "smart" device, the Palm 650, using POP, you could choose to delete messages that you've downloaded 1) on the device 2) on the server or 3) on both. I haven't figured out how to do it on the iPhone.
Am I missing something or is that feature missing?
    - Thanx
    - Jon

PTBoater, thanks for the note. It looks like the "when removed from inbox" option would do what I want, but it doesn't seem to work for me...
Is there some trick to using this feature? Messages deleted, another POP access initiated from the iPhone, time waited, no server deletion...
In fact, that setting doesn't appear to persist - after setting it, going back in to ensure it's set, waiting 10 mins, the setting goes back to "never"...
    - Thanx
    - Jon

Try going into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Then select the account on the right-hand side of that screen, select Account, then Advanced, Deleted Mailbox, and under On The Server tap the 'Trash' folder (or whatever it is called by yor provider) so that it gets a tick against it - then come out of that series of popups by tapping on the relevant buttons at the top of them and then see if you can delete emails

  • I am having a problem with email, when I delete messages from my Ipad, they come back into trash whether they are on my PC or not. The only way I can delete them is to to my providers site and delete everything there.

I am having a problem with email. I can receive and send, but when I delete, the deleted messages return into either Trash or Bin or both whether or not I have deleted them from my PC.
The only way I can get rid of them permanently, is to go into my area of my providers site(Sky) and empty all of the boxes there. I imagine it's a setting, please advise.

    For IMAP mail only.
    Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>tap on mail account>Archieve Messages>OFF

  • IPad 2 - email shuts down when trying to delete messages

Whenever I try to delete email messages, I click on "Edit", check the messages to be deleted. The red Delete button shows up and as soon as I touch it the entire email program shuts down and returns to the home page. The next "Delete Message" button does not show up before it shuts down.  I uninstalled and reinstalled the account which helped, but the problem came back again. Any suggestions?

I normally would suggest that you have an email with a funky attachment that might be causing a problem. You could try going to your webmail in a browser - either on your iPad or on your computer - and look for an email with a large spreadsheet file, photo, video, or some type of attachment that might be too large for the iPad to read and delete the message from the server, restart your iPad and then try the Mail App again.
Here are some other generic things that you can try and maybe one of these will help.
Quit the mail app by double tapping the home button to bring up the multitasking/recents tray at the bottom, hold down on the mail app icon in the tray until all the icons wiggle, then tap the minus sign in the corner to quit the mail app. Tap the screen outside outside of the recents tray to go back to the home screen. Then restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears, then slide to the right to power off the iPad. Turn the iPad on again by pressing the sleep button until the Apple logo appears.
Try a hard reset by pressing and holding down on the sleep button at the top of the iPad while holding down on the home button at the bottom, until the Apple logo appears and the iPad restarts.
