Portege 3940ct OS upgrade to XPSP2-Driver Issues Disabling Lan Function

I have canvassed all the threads on this forum (and others), and have not found a solution to my problem. But, its obvious that the main thinkers on Toshiba laptop configuration problems are here. So, if there is a solution to my problem, my best shot is in this forum.
I am fairly advanced in the troubleshooting on this and the only thing that makes me think that there is a solution is that it seems that others have successfully installed XP on this unit.
I have a 3940ct; I upgraded from W2kPro to XPSP2;
I have downloaded and installed all bios, drivers and toshiba utils for the unit from the Toshiba website.
I have confirmed that all system components are operational. They include a pcmcia cdrom, a network port replicator
Everything is beautiful. . . . EXCEPT:
I have no network function.
Indeed, I essentially have no internet communications function whatsoever--even through the modem. [The modem dials and as soon as the isp provider sends a communications handshake, WXP will not recognize it and disconnects]. (I have not tried to fax a document-- but I do not think that function is relevant to the problem).
Indeed, no matter what type of network connection device I try to install on the unit, the device driver will not install. This includes pcmcia network cards (10/100 based and wireless a-g,)and usb based wireless a-g adaptors.
Initially, after WXP was installed, I found that I could not get a Lan connection through network port replicator.
At power on, b/f WXP loads, the port replicator network connection LEDs indicate a connection. Once WXP loads, the port is disabled. [All other functions on the port replicator are operational under WXP].
Once logged on to WXP, WXP discovers "new hardware" and proceeds through the driver install proceess. It then proceeds to attempt to install an "unknown device". Ithen reports thatit can't locate a driver and then prompts for the user to finish the add hardware routine.
Device Manager reports several devices with yellow caution flags indicating the device driver could not be installed.
A look at the details tab on the "unknown device" (its under the "network device" tab) shows that the driver that is having a problem is "rasirda.sys". Device Manager will not permit the device to be uninstalled.
Other devices that have the yellow flag are:
1. Toshiba FIR Port Type-D0
2. IrDA Protocol (hidden device)
3. TCPIP (hidden device)
and any network adapter I try to install.
Device driver installations for network adapters, including the port replicator network controller (Intel 8255x based pci Ethernet Adapter (10/100), and its sister driver), will not install (and will not uninstall until the device is removed).
A look at the Administrator's System "Services" window indicates that essentially all the services necessary to support network/internetrleated services are disabled. The dependencies show that the all of these services are dependent, directly or indirectly, on "services.exe". That service will not execute and, when the service is forced to start, WXP reports that the service.exe does not initiate the indicated program.
Under "System Information", a look at the "network" tab indicates that there is a network adapter called "RAS Async Adapter" that is disabled.
My first approach to this problem was to reinstall the Toshiba driver update for the Toshiba FIR controller. To no avail.
The next thought was to simply disable the FIR function, but that can't be done at the bios level.... and well, as ambitious as I am, I did not want to venture into the machine to determine if the IR controller could be disconnected/removed from the system board......[But if that is a potential solution, then I will go there...]
As noted above, the only reason I have any hope is that it seems that others have successfully implemented XP on the 3xxx series porteges, all of which, to my knowledge have this same IR port. Also, Toshiba even wrote an XP driver for the device.
What I find puzzling, amoung other things, is that Device Manager reports the Rasirda.sys device under the network adapter tab. I would have thought this would have been reported under the "non plug and play" or "system device" tabs. Be that as it may, it would appear that Toshiba implemented the IR device as a network adaptor, or at least that is how WXP is recognizing it.
I have searched the internet, been on the Toshiba website, the microsoft XP webpages, knowledge bases, etc., and have not encountered any notable solutions per se..though I have benefitted from certain of the troubleshooting protocols--not my true ambition.
Bottom line is I need to have this computer connected to the internet. With all the protocols and services supporting internet communications disabled, even through the modem, ....well, its ridiculous. I can't even register WXP!! How absurd is that! Well its getting late.
Hopefully, someone will have a solution/workaround that will resolve this.
In the interim, I think the next step is to start over and reinstall XP and try . . . again.
I would appreciate any assistance anyone can muster.

What is odd is that Toshiba has written some XP drivers for the hardware in this unit and it is posted at www.pcsupport.toshiba.com. [file name is: p349irxp.exe] .
Also, just canvass this board and there are any number of 3xxx owners who have seemingly installed XP successfully--with one glitch or another (no pcmcia cd-rom) looking for relatively basic work arounds. In fact, my XP install works great except for the fact that virtually none of the drivers necessary to access the WWW will install, hardware or software.
I do appreciate the point you make re upgrading older equipment. I should have known better....eh?
Thanks for your two cents worth. I have read a number of your messages in canvassing this site and noted your insight. I appreciate your efforts and attempt to consider the source of my problem.

  • Portege 4000 - RAM upgrade & graphic card driver installation

I'm having a few issues with my Portege 4000 at the moment. I installed XP on one disk, but will need more RAM as I only have 256MB...
    - Have tried 2 manufacturers but the PC133 512 isn't compatible. However my system has an IBM chip of PC100 256 in it, which was bought at an earlier stage last year, after much trial and error, and I'm now wondering whether the motherboard will be more suited to PC100 rather than PC133?
    - Am considering alternative options to XP, namely 98SE or 2000 as these are lighter operating systems. I can put this on an alternative (test) disk. Is it possible to set up a partition for the Recovery CD Rom (which has 98SE) on it and have some space left over for installing another Linux o/s or does its partition manager overwrite everything?
    - I have put another post for .exe drivers relating to the display/vga for 98SE and 2000.
    - Just fyi, not all Linux distros seem to pick up on the monitor size, so this takes some work...
    Many Thanks for any help.

    The Protege 4000 is compatible with PC133 modules! As far as I know you can upgrade this notebook's RAM to 1GB (1024MB) and you could use these modules;
    PC133 512MB (PA3108U-1M51)
    PC133 256MB (PA3086U-1M25)
    PC133 128MB (PA3085U-1M12)

You could create some partitions on the HDD using an 3rd party tool like Partitions Magic 8. I use this tool and it's really nice.
After you have created 2 or three partitions on the HDD, you could install different OS (operating systems.)

  • Sometimes my computer takes too long to connect to new website. I am running a pretty powerful work program at same time, what is the best solution? Upgrading speed from cable network, is it a hard drive issue? do I need to "clean out" the computer?

Many times my computer takes too long to connect to new website. I have wireless internet (time capsule) and I am running a pretty powerful real time financial work program at same time, what is the best solution? Upgrading speed from cable network? is it a hard drive issue? do I only need to "clean out" the computer? Or all of the above...not to computer saavy.  It is a Macbook Pro  osx 10.6.8 (late 2010).

Almost certainly none of the above!  Try each of the following in this order:
Select 'Reset Safari' from the Safari menu.
Close down Safari;  move <home>/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db to the trash; restart Safari.
Change the DNS servers in your network settings to use the OpenDNS servers: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Turn off DNS pre-fetching by entering the following command in Terminal and restarting Safari:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false

  • Can't install CS3 Upgrade on NEW iMac 24". An Imac DVD drive issue?

My CS3 Design Premium Upgrade CD fails to install Photoshop on my BRAND NEW iMac yet it is able to install everything else on the CS3 disc. I just bought this iMac yesterday and CS2/CS3 Upgrade are the FIRST things I installed (besides updates) when I turned it on. I'm still using 10.4.10.
I searched through the Adobe forums and the internet as to how others with the same issue have dealt with the problem, but it seems the most common reason is that people had installed Photoshop CS3 beta previously as well as older Flash/Acrobat plug-ins conflicting with the installation process. Further, these causes seem to be effecting Windows users.
So a few hours ago I tried to COPY the upgrade CD contents to my hard disk, I get the message:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in 'AdobePhotoshop 10en_US.dmg' could not be read or written. (Error code -36)."
This procedure of copying to the disk (and the resulting error message) is SPECIFICALLY addressed in the Adobe support pages TechNotes:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb401429&sliceId=2
The page says that it may be a drive issue that is causing the problem. Of the 7 possible solutions given on the page, I've narrowed it down to only 1 option left (but I can't try it since I don't have another Mac!):
"*Solution 4*: Copy the software to the hard drive of a different computer.
*If the software copies successfully, the model of DVD drive on your original computer might not be able to read the DVD. Contact the DVD drive or computer manufacturer for any updates that might be available.*"
But what's funny (or annoying rather) is, I had a 20" Alum 2.4 iMac earlier this year (returned because of screen problem), and the CS3 upgrade installed without any problems on it!..??? And according to the iMac specs, the 20" and 24" models both have the same DVD drive make right?
Any ideas??? Are there other 24" iMac users who are experiencing similar problems? If not, then I guess I may have to return yet another iMac...which I'm reluctant to do since this screen is PERFECT! I'm scared to get another iMac with the dreaded screen gradient issue.

    I just solved the problem.
I tried copying the DVD files to the hard disk about 7-8 more times. The last try SUCCESSFULLY copied to the disk and I was able to install Photoshop CS3.
    Yay.

  • Has Apple ever fixed the fan issue that results from upgrading the hard drives on 2009-2010 iMacs?

Has Apple ever fixed the fan issue that results from upgrading the hard drives on 2009-2010 iMacs?
My CPU fan defaults to 3000RPM.  I can rev the fan higher with 3rd party Fan controllers, but no lower than 3K.

OR you can short out the original temp sensor, to make the fans rev at quieter speeds.
You can also install an optical temp sensor in place of the old one, it will still read temps and adjust the fans accordingly, just not as good as an internal sensor.
    Use something like this:http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-922-9229-Cable-Temp-Sensor-Optical-iMac-27-inch-Late -2009-2010-/111106349896

  • Permissions Issue, Colour Wheel, Hard Drive Issue??

    Hi!
I have had issues with my mid 2009 MBP recently and I'm wondering what the best way to fix them would be.
First off, I have some major permissions issues with my accounts.  I am using 3 different users regualrly on the same machine and needed to access files from the home folder so I changed them a long time ago, and am not sure how to fix that.  I have repaired the permissions countless times in the disk utility and it seems like there's always loads more to do each time.  When I varify the disk, it says its all okay.
Secondly, I have had the machine freeze on me several times while doing very little on it.  This happened awhile ago, and thought that it was just the permisions thing and so I did that again, and it started working better, for awhile.  It would go a few days or weeks before doing the same thing, sometimes not even getting past the apple logo on startup before freezing.  This makes me think it may be a hard drive issue???????
This morning, I tried dozens of times to boot, with no success at all.....  until about the 25th time when it miraculasly booted.  I have run permissions repair a few more times and it seems to be working okay at the moment, but the problem seems to be happening more often over time.
To complicate matters, I am traveling at the moment and will not be home for several months.  I purchased an external harddrive last night and was able to successfully back up my data.
Question 1: Is it the permissions that are causing these problems, or is it related to something else.  The computer seems to work fine when its working, and then once in awhile, decides its not going to do anything.
Question 2:  Would upgrading to Lion (currently running 10.6.8) fix the permissions issues or just carry them forward?  I would like to consolidate the 3 users into one, if that would solve it.  Does the migration utility preserve permissions or does it give you a brand new start?
Question 3:  If neither solving the permissions or the OS upgrade would fix the problem and it does need a new harddrive, is it possible to buy one and install it myself?  I do not have apple care left on this machine and am on a very tight budget.  I am used to taking things apart and all that as part of my job and it seems simple enough.  Where can you buy a replacement??
Hopefully someone out there will be able to help me out on this one.
    Cheers!!!!
    Brian

Disk Utility permissions are separate from User account permissions.
This link is how to fix them
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2181549?start=0&tstart=0
Disk Utility will always show something to be needing repair, but that's ok
    Apple supoort doc.

Verify Disk is good, that's a good thing.

Your data is backed up, hopefully not with TimeMachine alone, but if you did, then get another drive and backup data manually to that as well. If the TM drive gets messed up, it's a pain to get your data off of it.
Question 1: Is it the permissions that are causing these problems, or is it related to something else.  The computer seems to work fine when its working, and then once in awhile, decides its not going to do anything.
Well you could call Apple for replacement 10.6.x disks, and just reinstall 10.6 and bundled programs, but this can kick out kext files out of the /System/Library/Extensions folder installed by some third party software.
This method fixes OS X, but doesn't touch your files or most programs.
Nor will this method fix your Users accounts if the issue is in there.
A creation of a new user, then deletion of the others, return files from backup (set permissions) will fix User folder issues if the above user permissions fix doesn't work.
(Of course you could wipe the drive from the 10.6 disk, but you have to install all software again)
Would upgrading to Lion (currently running 10.6.8) fix the permissions issues or just carry them forward?
No, you don't want to install Lion, it won't fix those issues in User folders, not only that Lion has it's own issues and doesn't work with a lot of older software etc.   No use clusterfscking a already bad situtation when it's seems it's only localized to the User accounts.
I would like to consolidate the 3 users into one, if that would solve it.
Yes that could very nicely and tidy up things in the process.
What you do is transfer all files to one regular powered storage hard drive.
(Don't use/disconnect the TimeMachine drive for this as it preserves the users seperated and you don't want all those users back restoring  with Migration Assistant)
Create the New User on the machine as Admin, log into it and delete all the other Users, transfer all your files back from the regular storage drive, changing all the permissions to yourself before placing them into their respective folders as they will have three different permissions.
    Notes:
If you have a extensive iTunes playlists on one User (say #1), then create the new user with that same name (will require some work, create User 4, delete Users 1-3, reboot, create User 1, delete User 4) then transfer your iTunes folder to Music of that User 1 (same name as before). This will preserve the pathnames of your song locations and your playlists will be preserved.
(before you ask, no you can't combine playlists)
Also if you have photo's in iPhoto Library, you have to right click on it and "show package contents" inside is a folder called Originals, copy them out and import into the iPhoto of the User #1.
Does the migration utility preserve permissions or does it give you a brand new start?
Yes it preserves user permissions, no it doesn't give you a brand new start. Only a fresh install, creation of new users and then just transferring of files does that.
Nothing about TimeMachine or Migration Assistant gives one a "fresh start", it's if hosed, so is your restore.
If you want that sort of pristine protection, you need to clone your ideal boot partition/drive using Carbon Copy Cloner (free/donationware) occasionally as a hold the option key bootable drive, then you can erase and reverse clone the pristine saved clone.
One can also update the clone on occasion, this way keeping the clone pristine.
I maintain 3 clones time dated, even have my boot drive partitioned 50/50 and auto-cloned, this way I have two boot partitions on the road and two externals at home.
I never use TimeMachine, it's not bootable (well it is on 10.7.2 only to restore though)

Connect the HDD to your MBP.  Open Disk Utility>Erase and drag the HDD icon inrt the Name field.  The format should be Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Click on the Erase button.
Then try the clone process again.  You may use Disk Utility>Restore or a third party cloning application such as Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper.

  • Do I need an OS Disc to restore my macbook after I upgrade the hard drive?

I need to upgrade the hard drive in my 2009 macbook. I have a Time Capsule. I'm not clear on whether I need to install OS on the new drive using a disc, or whether I can do that from the Time Capsule? The issue is that my disc drive is broken, and I don't really want to replace it as I never use discs in it anyway. But i don't want to get stuck with a new hard drive and be unable to get an operating system on it.

    I prefer this process:
How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
      1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
      2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of
the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive
is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the
Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from
the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID  then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and
wait until the process has completed.
      4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the
drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main
          window.
      5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the
Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to
          return to the Erase window.
      6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several
hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
      1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
      5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Destination entry field.
      6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Source entry field.
      7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.  Click on the Restart button.  You should boot from the new drive.  Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.
However, you could simply reinstall OS X on the new drive after prepping it, the restore all your files from your Time Machine backup.
Hard to say what if any other options there may be since you haven't told us what version of OS X is in use and backed up to your Time Capsule (and if it is a full system backup.)

  • How do I upgrade my hard drive for my iMac

My 3TB fusion HD died yesterday. This is my very first MAC computer. it failed exactly 2 years and 4 months of use. Glad I got the 3 year Apple care.  Now I am sour on fusion drive.  Can I upgrade my iMac to a SSD? I will pay the up charge to get one.

You are covered by AppleCare and your HD will be replaced. Remember a Fusion drive is a combination SSD and rotating hard drive "fused" together by software. Any HD can fail at any time though so it's not a Fusion drive problem, it is a HD issue.
Regarding whether you can upgrade to an SSD only, Apple Stores do not perform upgrades on Fusion Drives to SSDs. If you would like this done you may have better luck by contacting an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) in your area. You can begin finding one by clicking:

  • Ogre 3D 'glGetString' Problem, May Be Driver Issue

    Hello!
I'm relatively new to Arch Linux, all I did till now was install it and get X running with the 'awesome' window manager. I must say, I like it, especially pacman, AUR and ABS.
I'm a hobbyist programmer and I generally write graphics applications (games) with Ogre 3D. I decided to get Ogre 3D and build it. I got the latest SVN HEAD, and built it, it built fine. However, when I run a sample, I get the following error (which occurs right when it tries to create the GLX subsystem):-
OgreGLSupport.cpp:57: virtual void Ogre::GLSupport::initialiseExtensions: Assertion `pcVer && "Problems getting GL version string using glGetString"' failed
I've run Ogre 3D applications both on Windows and Ubuntu on this very same laptop, so I don't think its a hardware issue. It may be a driver issue though. I have 'xf86-video-intel' installed, and hotplugging turned off with "AutoAddDevices" "False" in xorg.conf. 'lspci | grep VGA' gives:-
Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
It is possible that it's an Ogre specific issue, but I still thought I'd mention it here because it could also have to do with drivers and other configuration stuff.
To check whether glGetString() works, I took the program from the second NeHe tutorial and modified it to spit out glGetString results, and it says "Vendor: Mesa Project, Renderer: Software Rasterizer, Version: 2.1 Mesa 7.2".
I've also run some other graphics applications (the Bullet physics engine (which I just built today) demos), and they run much slower than how they did on Windows and Ubuntu.
Any ideas what the problem is and how to fix it?
    Thanks for your help!

Humnn... I don't know. How I "solved" it today: downgrade xorg-server to 1.5.3, catalyst to 9.4 and kernel to 2.6.28. Now I have my game working again. I think it was only a problem with the driver... I'll try to upgrade asap.

  • In Settings\iCloud Don't See "upgrade to iCloud drive" or "set up family sharing"

I would like to use family sharing.  We have iOS8, but in Settings\iCloud we don't see "upgrade to iCloud drive" or "set up family sharing".  I am unsure what else to do.  I searched support, but they all see to assume we can see these settings.
    Help!

    Hi wmcknigh,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The article below should help you resolve the issue with shared content not appearing after setting up Family sharing on the MacBook Pros.

  • Snow Leopard Ok Except MIDI Driver Issues

I really like the Snow Leopard install I did this past Sat and all went well, speed increase, added HD space, faster Photoshop CS4. But I can't use GarageBand right now because my M-Audio UNO Sport MIDI USB cable won't work wth Snow Leopard. There is no driver update yet at the M-Audio for the UNO. I'm sure they are working on it, but I need to get my keyboard hooked up to GB.
I am reading many other posts here about others having no problems with the upgrade other than MIDI issues with their direct USB keyboards or their MIDI/Audio interfaces.
    Hope this gets fixed soon.
    Thanks Steve

It seems I have a similar problem. I use my Kawai Mp5 (stage piano) as a midi interface. It is connected to my Mac (see details below) using a USB cable.
In Leopard it worked fine. In Snow Leopard however I need to power on the Kawai before I start my computer! If I power the Kawai later it is not detected in the Midi Setup of MacOSX. However, in system info I can see that the USB device is detected!
So the Mac recognizes the device, but it's not showing up as a midi interface, unless it was powered before I started my computer.
Anyone else having this problem? It's really annoying to have to restart your computer everytime I which to use my midi interface..

  • X230 Win 8.1 Power Management Device Driver Issue

    Hi,
Fresh Win 8 build, in place upgrade to 8.1. Then all Lenovo tools updated and latest Lenovo compatability package installed.
This device is not detected properly. I believe it is a Power Manager driver issue (based on an older post with the same problem, but no resolution posted).
    Lenovo X230
    Type: 2330-A59
    Device instance path: ACPI\LEN0078\5&2890D699&0
Location: on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller
I've tried the typical deletion of the device and re-run the PM driver install package (latest from Lenovo.com). No change. The device is listed back in Device Manager as an "Unknown" device.
Anyone out there know the solution? I hope it is something I am just over looking.

Found the answer. It is NOT the PM Driver.

This resolved the issue! It's too bad the  System Update tool did not capture this.
