Possible design improvement.

In OS X the minimize button (yellow -) is right next to the close-window button (red x). With a slightly careless mis-click, it is easy to close, say Firefox, which deletes all the existing tabs. I realize that Cmd-H could be used instead of the minimize button, but I really prefer a GUI.
Also, sometimes a pop-up window appears so that two close-window buttons overlap, and with the magic slate, or whatever it's called, it is very easy to click twice and inadvertently close the backmost window.
That's probably considered a minor frustration, but it could be easily fixed in several ways, so I'd like to suggest that.
Hopefully Apple won't take this suggestion as an attack on them, because it's a legitimate technical suggestion, and I'm weary of having my posts here deleted.

    hi
    Is it possible to improve the LMP Bluetooth in iMac from x4 to x6

    It can only be swapped out for GPU chips that were available for that model at the time.
    The only two options were a 256 or 512 VRAM ATI GPU.
    If you have never done any type of computer or Mac hardware upgrades before, the tear down of an iMac is not for a newbie or novice to take on a DIY project.
    If your GPU went bad, you will need to bring your iMac in to an Apple Store or Apple authorized repair center to have the iMac's GPU replaced by qualified Apple technicians.
    Good Luck!

  • Why hasn't Adobe navigation and user interface design improved as much as it could have over time?

    I haven't tried CS6. I'm sure it's great based on what i've seen alone. But as a user of adobe products for a number of years, i have to noticed there are still a lot of stagnant,awkward, stiff, irriating, slowing down elements found in the navigation and user interface on cs3-cs5, that i'm sure could have been eliminated or improved on at least from 2005 or 2007 onwards. I find some of these things inexcusable and unprogressive from bad traits that defined 1980's and 1990's general computer navigation and so on.
    CS5.5 has lessned this a bid bit and is more fluid in bits and pieces but for those using cs3-cs5 and in general, i find some things just horrid. As a graphic designer no one is supposed to admit the flaws or irrations of these programs. We must hail them as god, never critisize, and always adjust to new things which i think is a bit fascististic and silly
    The way the tools, options are laid out can be improved to be quicker, and easier to find and use. Using your voice as a commanding system would be helpful as well.
    A lot of cmds are too complex to remember, they can be simplier or resemble the name of the tool or option. Its makes a chore to follow this system and competition for the smart *** who memormized all the cmds.
    The way in which you loose floating side boxes, and the amount of tools or names hidden in the bars sometimes seem random and its always a constant search to find them incase you forget where they are.
    The inability to open cs4 or 5 files in cs3 is just beyond extremly annoying. Whey shouldn't you be able to open cs1 or 2 files or photoshop 9 files  as well? Every five years work expires as well?
    The layering system gets tricky and seems that a lot of things don't work when you normally move things. Its about going back, remembering and clicking on this or that, looking it up to make everything work. Sometimes which leaves you in a rut and wastes a good amount of time. You will always find this even after you've been using it for years.
    The use of the fill paint/airbrushing, clone tool, lasso tool, pen tool, history being two steps back can be vastly improved to be much better to use
    Masking and tools that have more complex features should find a way be automatically done or sampled. They can also have less complex steps and tha ability to be  previewed,  automatic or simpler  ( in case you can't remember how to do something or aren't getting it)
    A lot of the special effects, and blending modes are useless, outdated, super-ugly and don't resemble  true darkroom effects ( such as polarization, and bas-relief for example)  which they could much more vividly done. There also could be more options that are closer to repro cameras/CTP software for halftoning and more complex digital effects.
    Having to press or get used to pressing muliple keys or clicks for the most basic things simultaneously can be reduced to be easier
    Adjusting text, new documents, photos should have a smoother, quicker navigational experince where things a lot of room to be , clicked back, re-done, saved in the wrong place etc..
    Indesign could use more shapes, include more features that illustrator has, and possibly even photoshop to save time.
    There should be a way to remind you of features, complex things you've forgotten, other than history and daily usage/practice of the programs
    The help should resemble more of "visual -learners" guide books with voice features.
    There are a lot more
    Regarding other things:
    I think the price encorages more piracy and allows people to not have a concept of what is means to owning software.
    The loss of a manual or lessening of them for certain programs is a loss because it's always useful to  physical info you can flip through while looking at your program.
    I think adobe should make entirely better products for professionals or people in the industry rather than spoonfeeding the same software to all.
    They should also make less expensive add-ons like before for graphic software.
    What do you adobe could have improved over time and if so what do you think they could have improved on?

  • Possible N70 Improvements

    Overall I'm happy with my new N70, but there are a few things that I think could easily be improved in a future firmware version. If you have others, perhaps you could add them, or if I'm doing something wrong, let me know! (Most of them are things my 6230 did, but I can't do now)
    1. Use Radio or mp3 as alarm tone.
    2. Option to turn off Nokia tune on switch on. Useful when in quiet places or when you don't want to advertise your phone to the world!
    3. Full functionality with CK-7W using the Pop Port connection.
    4. Name order of contacts only applies to list. If you choose first name first, last name is still first on messages, and when searching, they are displayed correctly, but surnames are searched first, eg. searching for "S" brings up "John Smith", then "Sam".
    5. Option to turn off long message warnings. I've been sending long messages as multiple SMS since the olden days (3310), why start warning me about it now?
    6. This may not be possible due to hardware orientation of the sensor, but how about a fullscreen camera view finder, which actually takes landscape pictures when you hold it landscape, and portrait pictures when you hold it portrait?
    7. Not sure if this is correct, but I've read the jpg compression has been increased, so the overall quality of the higher res. pictures is lower than that of the 6680, to keep the size down. How about more quality options, so we can get the full benefit of the 2MP camera?
    Sorry for the mammoth post, but I think thats it ... for now!

  • Possible design patterns for base function with possible additions

    I have various interfaces i have to implement. Let's assume ITypeA, ITypeB. They have following methods:
    ITypeA
    Connect
    Disconnect
    GetData
    SetData
    ClearData
    ITypeB
    Connect
    Disconnect
    GetData
    SetData
    Start
    Pause
    Stop
    They have some base functionality: Connect, Disconnect, GetData and SetData.
    If I want to add ITypeC in the future, it will have these base functionality too.
    I want to access to the base functionality and if there is additional functionality, I want to get this too. What design patterns are available that are capable of this situations?
    I found one here: Extension Interface. In this, you create a base
    interface and multiple extension interfaces that are implementing the additional functions. In the base interface you can ask for the available extension interfaces of the component. But this approach seems complicated: I have to create interfaces for each
    type, factories for the interfaces, I need some tables to save what Interface belongs to what Factory...
    What is the basic solution for this problem? Extension Interfaces? Are there any other possible alternatives for my problem?

    You may have more joy dividing your interfaces by behaviour and deciding on the types later.
    interface IConnectable
    Connect
    Disconnect
    interface IDataTransferrable
    GetData
    SetData
    interface IPlayable
    Start
    Pause
    Stop
    class TypeA : IConnectable, IDataTransferrable
    class TypeB : IConnectable, IDataTransferrable, IPlayable
    And then how can discover if your object supports these interfaces?
    here's one way:
    if (ob is IPlayable)
    Playback(ob);
    where you have a function:
    void Playback(IPlayable ob)

  • Design/Improvement Question

    Hi!
    I've recently been tasked with making sure that all of the connection to a certain account are set up when we moved it to a new oracle server/instance(done by comparing the results of several queries). I've developed a small program to help make my life easier and to gain a little knowledge in java. The thing works, I'm just curious as to if there is a better way of doing the task. Currently here is my process:
    Using System.out and System.in
    Get the account name I'm testing from user (which will be me most of the time but in-case I decide to share my toy).
    Get username and password(99.999% of the time it'll be a default username/pw that we have access to I just added the option in-case it's for a production server that the default doesn't work on).
    Get the two instances to compare.
    Create two urls for JDBC based on the instance
    Start running the queries(Prepared Statements) that return Lists<String>
    Compare the two lists
    Output the differences into an excel file using apache POI.
    So my question is this; Is my design ok? (Specifically my compare method is what I'm unsure about) Do you have any suggestions for improvement? How would you do this differently? (Swing is off the table for now, maybe as another learning session I'll try to do the same thing but with a gui)
    I'm fairly new to java programming, which is probably obvious, so I appreciate all feedback and criticisms.
    public static void main(String args[]){
         GetInformationFromUser first = new GetInformationFromUser();
         //get info from the user
         first.setAccount();
         first.setInstance();
         first.setUserNameandPW();
         //do same for a second account
         //Create 2 connections
         DatabaseConnection dbc = new DatabaseConnection();
         Connection firstCon = dbc.createURL(first.getInstance(), first.getUserName(), first.Password());
         Connection secCon = dbc.createURL(sec.getInstance(), sec.getUserName(), sec.Password());
         //open up the database connection and run the queries
         List<String> firstList = dbc.callQuery1(firstCon, first.getAccount());
         List<String> secList = dbc.callQuery1(secCon, sec.getAccount());
         List<String> differences = dbc.compare(firstList, secList);
         dbc.output(differences);
    }Then my compare method is similar to this:
    public class DatabaseConnection {
        public List<String> callQuery1(Connection con, String account){
            //Run a prep statement
            //use the ResultSet to fill a List
            //return the list
        public List<String> callQuery2(Connection con, String account){
            //Same Idea as 1
        public List<String> callQuery3(Connection con, String account){
            //Same Idea as 1
        public List<String> compare(List<String> first, List<String> second, String firstInstance, String secInstance){
            List<String> differences = new ArrayList<String>();
            for(String s : first){
                if(second.contains(s)){
                    //do nothing (don't care about similarities only what is missing)
                }else{
                    differences.add(firstInstance +" has "+ s +" that "+ secInstance +" doesn't");
             for(String s : second){
                 if(first.contains(s)){
                     //do nothing (don't care about similarities; only what is missing)
                  }else{
                     differences.add(secInstance + " has " + s + " that " + firstInstance + " doesn't");
            return differences;
    }Thanks!

    The design seems fine.
    I would suggest that you use Set instead of List as Set ignores the order of entries. It is also simple to find the differences using sets by taking a copy and doing removeAll()

  • Is it possible to improve a G4 ibook on Tiger 10.4.11?

    I have had my ibook for years and has been great but has become slow and difficult to use. (OSX 10.4.11, 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4, 1GB DDR SDRAM)
    Software will not update anymore and Firefox browser in particular is now out of date and causing issues with gmail etc.
    I could update to OSX 10.5, but the disks on ebay are not cheap - would this upgrade even improve things at all? or is here really no point?
    I do lots of image editing and it struggles with the files sizes now too. Would it help to transfer most files off the harddisks to free up hard disk memory.
    The ram is apparently 1GB.
    I really don't have the money for a new Mac and would love to keep this going a bit longer. ANY help with improving its performance would be much appreciated!
    Thanks

    You may need to start a thread of you own and include the technical information about your iBook G4 such as the build year, hardware specifications, total capacity of the iBook's internal hard disk drive, installed RAM total, and if you know it, the available free-space remaining in the hard disk drive. Disk Utility could help, as could Activity Monitor, for finding information on the system hardware details.
    If the computer has all the RAM it can use (according to MacTracker.ca or other spec source) and a large enough capacity of unused free space in the hard disk drive, it could be capable of running Leopard 10.5.8; but you would have to get a retail install disc through Apple online or by phone through Support since it probably is not available in their store. A call to the main Apple support may be worth a try should you want to upgrade the OSX to 10.5.8 if the computer you have is able to adequately run this version.
    Interest in these older notebook portable and pre-Intel based Macs has slowed, so replies may be long in arriving. Other forums have disappeared over the past five to eight years, too; those had good exposure.
    Hopefully this helps somewhat.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • A possible design for the next generation iPod, resolving smudges/scratches

    "This design allows the iPod to switch between music and video mode by way of a sliding mechanism. In the "closed" mode, the player appears as current iPods. In video mode, the entire front face of the iPod slides away to reveal the full sized screen underneath. Screen is protected from impact and scratching in music mode."

  • Is it possible to improve the quality of an MP3 file by converting to aiff?

    itunes 11.0.4 (4)
    I am contemplating the costs/benefits of purchasing digital downloads of mp3/mp4 files instead of purchasing actual cds.  I am aware that the MP files are compressed and are thus lower quality.  I have already purachased some digital music, from Amazon, and am now burning cds.  While creating playlists and burning, I noticed the option 'convert to aiff'.  I did this with one album.  I now have doubles of each track of that album, the original mp3 and the converted aiff.  The aiff file size of one song, for example, is 71MB compared to 12MB for the mp3 version.
    Did my aiff conversion do anything to improve the quality of my mp3 files?  If so, to what extent? E.g., how close is the quality to that of a cd?  The added file size of the aiff must represent some difference.  I am asking because I am skeptical that my converting an mp3 using itunes could improve the quality of that with which I began...i.e., the mp3 file.  Is this conversion effectively 'uncompressing' the mp3?
    If an aiff conversion increases quality, I see no reason to worry about mp3 compression.  It would make sense, economically, to purcahse mp3s and then convert to aiff, saving time, money, and transportation costs.
    Finally, is there anyway to convert to aiff just for the purpose of creating one playlist and then burning so that I do not have to maintain double files in my library?  Thanks for answers.

    All you accomplished by converting the file to AIFF was to make the file much larger. As AnaMusic said, there's no way to put back the information that was lost during the process of compressing to MP3. If you want CD quality, you'll either need to buy the CDs and import them yourself or see if the album is available through one of the download stores that sell music in CD quality or better, such as iTrax, HDTracks or eClassical. They've only been able to license a small subset of what's available, but you might be fortunate.
    Regards.

  • How is it possible to improve iMovie quality in black areas?

    The movie looks fine in preview, but there are a lot of compression artifacts in dark areas when exporting it (720p)

    I was putting together different videos already recorded so I couldn't improve the quality of the sources... Manual export with setting bitrate to 5mbs helped a little, even though the output video is still not as good as the preview video. I guess that's the best iMovie can do for now...

  • My first java program. Design improvements?

    Hello all,
    I'm new to this forum (just joined today) so hi! I've been learning java for the last few months by reading a few books, and finally decided to take a crack at my first program (beyond hello world). This one is windows only. At work with a co worker we found that in windows 2000 the background images could get out of sync, so this program gives the user an alternative way to set the backgrounds.
    What I'm asking is if anyone has any time to kill and enjoys reading source code to take a look at it for me. If you see any issues with how the program was implemented and could be improved please let me know.

    Right now, my opinion in java is that it's too
    complicated for no reason compared to C++..It's not too complicated, it's just that you are new at this.
    Here's a little example of a simple class with a simple main method, the rest figure it out yourself, and with time read some java books, you won't learn java just by knowing C++.
    public class Human {
        // See this as C constants (although they're not their Equivalent)
        public static boolean MALE = true;
        public static boolean FEMALE = false;
        //member variables.
        private String name;
        private boolean sex;
        /** Creates a new instance of Human */
        public Human(String n, boolean s) {
            name = n;
            sex = s;
        }//End of CONSTRUCTOR.
        public String getName() {
            return name;
        }//End of getName
        public String toString() {
            StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
            sb.append("[Name: " + name);
            if(sex)
                sb.append(", sex: Male]");
            else
                sb.append(",sex: Female]");
            String returnValue = new String(sb);
            return returnValue;
        }//End of toString()
        //Just the main program, it could be at another class.
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            Human h = new Human("Pablo", Human.MALE);
            String theHumanAsAString = h.toString();
            System.out.println(theHumanAsAString);
        }//End of main method
    }//End of class

  • Is it possible to improve the poor quality of DVD's?

    I started my presentation in Keynote and exported the file as a quicktime movie (high quality). I then moved the quicktime movie into iDVD and when I previewed the project, the quality looked crisp...so far so good. I then proceeded to burn directly to DVD and the quality was, for lack of a better word, crap. I tried creating a disc image and using Toast but unfortunately it's not rearly as sharp as it was within iDVD.
    This has been bugging me for about weeks now. I've been reading the discussion boards for a while and haven't found a solution to my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
    I'm also a very frustrated user experiencing the same problem with iDVD 6. This was not seen when I was using iDVD 5.
    I've made a .dv file with imovie 6.0.1, and upon "Sharing" to idvd, I didn't see any drop in quality during preview. Its only when I've the DVD disc image file where iDVD compresses the .dv format to mpeg2 that a significant loss in video quality can be seen.
    I've also tried out different methods of encoding the .dv file using other software:
    1. Toast 7.0.1 : Same poor quality mpeg2
    2. ffmpegX : I tried tweaking different settings, (video bitrate, etc), but only very insignificant improvements were seen. ( Anyone out there with success in finding the right combinations of options, please post reply!)
    3. JES Deinterlacer : I don't think the problem lies with interlacing, as I don't see much improvements here either.
    Anyway, has anyone checked out this website:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/idvd_6stone.html
    I've actually contacted the website owner Ken Stone via email, asking him if he has seen this problem. He replied to me that he did not experience quality loss since he did not work with imovie.
    I'm pretty baffled here, as I thought the problem clearly lies with the process of dv to mpeg2 encoding, and not the software that was used to create the movie or .dv file?
    Anybody out there has a workaround or a definate solution?

    Whether they replace just the screen, a subassembly, the whole top half of the computer, or the entire computer is entirely up to them, as is whether they replace with new or refurbished parts.
    I would make sure I had at least one full backup of everything on my computer before taking it in. Two would be even better. Even if they don't replace the entire computer, something could happen during installation and testing of new parts.
    Back when people really cared about the manufacturer of their screen (in the beginning of the Retina models, when one manufacturer had a bad run of screens), instructions for using Terminal commands to determine which you had circulated. I didn't bother to keep a copy of the one I used. A web search for "retina screen manufacturer" (without the quotes) should reveal as top hits several sites with very similar instructions.
