Power supply mobo question

i have a an antec psu and it comes with a 3 pin plug for the motherboard, since my motherboard has only 2 3 pin plugs 1 for the HSF and the other one for the system fan. but my mobo dont have a system fan, so can i plug in the 3 pin connector from the psu to the system fan plug?

I dont think it matters which it 3 pin it is hooked upto.. but I could be wrong. However it is only to monitor the speed of your fans and doesn't draw power like it would if were a sys fan, anyway try it and see if the monitor of your fans works...
 I have a question also simular. I have an Antec550 w/. the front control panel on it. My board is the K7N2-Delta which has a sys fan plugged into the MB and running the xp 2200+ stock heatsink in fan which can only hook to the 3-pin on the MB. The PSU has a three pin which hooks to the MB and is supposed to (when I turn the knob on the front) speed up or slow down my CPU fan.
 The montherboard does not have an extra 3 pin, is there something I can buy that will convert my three pin from my CPU fans to a four pin so I can hook it up directly to my PSU and then hook my PSU to the board to adjust the speed of the fan??
 Or what are my solutions?

  • KT3 Ultra2 Power Supply Fan Question

    What is the connector PSFAN1 used for? I thought the Power Supply Fan comes on when you turn on the computer. Seems strange that you would have to route the power through the motherboard....I am sorry for the newbie question. I do have a newer Enermax case that seems to have the correct connector coming from the wiring harness out of the power supply. Do I plug that wire onto the PSFAN1 connector?

    Yeah, you will be fine if your plug it in. I have an enermax as well and it is plugged into my mobo and all is well. There is usually a fan in the bottom of the power supply (facing the cpu) and another on the back. The one in the bottom sucks air away from the cpu and the one in the back sucks the air out. You may want to look and see if there is a fan control on the back of the power supply as some let you control the speed of the out blowing fan. Oh, by the way, I just saw that they have three fan power supplies now!

  • Power Supply Cooling Question

    Well, I've been up and running now for the last week or so with no major issues.
    I'd like to thank all of you that answered my previous questions during my search for parts and helping me put a good plan in place so that the building of this system was painless.
    I have a question though that kind of concerns me.
    I noticed one day that what should be an exhaust from the power supply is not an exhaust at all.  The air flow is actually into the power supply.  I thought this was very unusal.  Years ago I actually did have a power supply that had a fan mounted backwards, but that was some cheap case/ps combo in the P2 days.  
    My power supply in this system is an Enermax EG465P-VE.  I said to myself "no way could it be mounted backwards".  After checking things out very closely I found that when I removed the side case cover, the power supply started exhausting in the right direction.  Put the case cover back on and the air flow went into the power supply again.  Ifinally came to the conclusion that the 120mm fan in the back of the case about 2-3 inches below the power supply was actual exhausting so much air out the case that this 120mm fan was actually drawing air against the power supply's fans and causing a slightly negative flow of air (in the wrong direction) through the power supply.  I hope I have clearly described the situation.  
    What concerns me is that the negative flow results in very little air flowing within the power supply, which could  potentially result in the power supply overheating and failing resulting in a MoBo and processor frying.
    To clarify again, the power supply is trying to push air out, but the 120mm fan is slightly stronger and is more than neutrallizing any flow through the power supply.  
    Just a little more info... I do have one 80mm fan in the front of the case sucking air into the case, blowing over the hard drive.
    There is another spot for a second 80mm fan in the front, but since I'm not over-clocking and really not producing a lot of heat I didn't think I needed two fans in front.
    The only other solution that I can think of is to somehow rig up a verister or sensor on the 120mm fan, but to cover all temperture combinations could result in something very complicated for something that shouldn't be that complicated.
    Maybe someone has noticed the same problem and has a solution.

    When you see the specs on a cooling fan it says so many CFM. But really what it should be saying is how many CFM at a given speed and at a given pressure ratio (exit to inlet pressure ratio). For a given speed the relationship between flow rate and pressure ratio is on a negative slope. That is if you reduce pressure ratio, flow rate goes up and vice versa.
    Using your example suppose I put in two intake fans that on spec each draws 10 CFM and one exhaust fan that does 15 CFM and lets assume that the case is so sealed that air can only enter and leave the case via the intake and exhaust holes. When you turn this system on both intake fans try to pressurise the case but as the case pressure goes up, so does the pressure ratio acrsss the fans. Recall the slope relationship. What happens is that the flow rate drops across the two intake fans. Similarly as the pressure inside the case goes up, it become a lot easier for the exhaust fan to do its job because its pressure ratio is dropping. So what does really happen in this situation? Well the overall system reaches an equilibrium condition where the two fans deliver just enough air that the exhaust fan takes out. You can also consider extreme cases where you have massive intake fans and a weak exhaust fan. In this extreme case you'd be better off by removing the weak exhaust fan because the pressure across it becomes so low that you would not need it. You can take the argument around and make the case for a powerful exhaust fan and obviate the need for an intake fan.
    Then why do we need so many fans if all we need is one powerful exhust or intake fan? This happens because as air enters the case, it follows its least resistance path inside the case. This implies that you may end up with "dead air" areas in some regions of the case which won't be good for heat duild up. Now this does not mean that by a careful rearrangement of the components you would not be able to come up with a configuration that only uses one fan. To that you'd need to use computational flow techniques and mathematically model each component in terms of blockage and the amount of heat being put out. This is quite expensive to do so but this is how its done for the high power computers.

  • IMacs G3 power supply compatiblity question

    I have an original Bondi blue iMac G3. Power supply works OK.
    I have a flower power iMac G3 but the power supply is defunct.
    Can I swop the Bondi 's iMac power supply to the flower power iMac?

    Unfortunately the answer is no. I just checked Mactracker & the Bondi Blue iMac uses a 80 watt power supply. The Flower Power iMac uses a 150 watt power supply. So if you tried to use the Bondi Blue iMac's power supply it probably wouldn't provide enough wattage for the iMac to work properly. I would recommend looking on eBay for a replacement power supply. Some vendors might have one or more in stock.

    I have a new P700 30A90012US with a 650W PSU and that didn't come with a video card. I am planning to use it as a DAW and for occasional gaming via a dual boot.
    I wanted to put in a third party video card like a nVidea 970 but there aren't ANY connectors for video cards that I can find inside. The monitor I have is a 3440x1440 monitor. I have ordered a second 2609 Processor and RAM from Lenovo and have the following questions:
    Once I install the second processor, how much wattage for a video card is available to me?
    I understand that the 3rd party video card isn't supported but how do I attach power to it?
    If it is required that I have to replace the 650 power supply with an 850, does it come with the required cable? I only see a 4 pin connector on the mobo that is unused (and I believe it is for additional hdd)
    I tried searching but I am at a loss.

    Your config isn't really power hungry (and the 85W CPUs help a lot).  Though technically outside of the official spec, I think you could easily go to a 225W card for graphics if you had the connectors available to support it.  I'll double check the current when I get a chance, but it's probably really low risk if you want to convert your single 6-pin connector to dual 6-pin or a single 8-pin (via a dongle) to get to 225W TDP if you wanted to.
    The PSU design is very modular, but unfortunately it's the aux power cable drops that kept it from being an easy field upgradable part.  I always recommend that people buy the larger PSU if they ever think they'll be doing any upgrades in the future just to make sure they are covered.
    And like I said if you're comfortable working inside the system, it's not impossible to upgrade that cable drop on your own if you want to go up to the 850W.  You'd have to get the cable and PSU, but after that it would require removing the motherboard and PSU, cutting some cable ties and routing the new cable, then getting everything routed correctly such that the motherboard reinstalls cleanly.

    I'm building my first box(!) so I am a bit of a newb with some things, but otherwised an experienced tech. for the life of me I can't figure out power supplies.
    My system:
    975x Platinum mobo (I don't think it's v2)
    Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 CPU
    HIS ati 1800GTO IceQ PCIe x16 GPU
    2 x 1GB ASUS PC4200 sticks
    2 x 250 GB harddrives
    as you can see I am building a good but not blazing machine. Here are my power supply questions:
    1. what model power supply exactly does this mobo need? the 8pin CPU is an EPS12V model? would any ATX12VEPS work, or does that 8pin need to be a dedicated 12V?
    2. my GPU has a PCIe power slot, and the mobo has a molex power connector for the PCIe. Do I use both? Do I just use the one on the card?
    3. does the CPU require any other funky new technology in power that I need to look for?
    4. (is it just me, or does is kind of information very hard to find? I can't find any details in the manual
    I went ahead and bought as Ultra 500W X-finity with the 8-pin, PCIe x2, dual 12V rails. hopefully it will be fine.

    there is cover on 4 of the pins so they are not used.

  • W520 power supply rating vs. performanc​e question

    I have had a W520 with the i2820 processor option and the quadro 1000 video for over 3 weeks now. I bought several spare 170 watt power bricks for it, but in one location I kept the 135 watt brick from my W510.
    When I moved from the w500 to the w510, when I used a 90 watt w500 brick, the w510 would boot with a BIOS level message that said that the power supply was not adequate and that the machine would be stepped down to a slower speed. The reduction in performance was dramatic and noticable. (The w510 had the 45 watt consumption i920 chip and the more power hungry graphics)
    When I use or boot the w520 with the 135 watt supply, there is no message. My benchmarks do not change from those registered when on the 170 watt power supply, starting with the Win 7 system benchmarks for processor and video. Further, the 135 watt brick is cooler to the touch than the 170 watt one under sustained usage (3 hours plus).
    The question: given that the w520 in my configuration seems to draw less power than the hot and hungry w510, is the 135 watt supply going to work "as well as" the 170 watt one? As a briefcase lugger, any way to shed weight is valued.
    Other considerations: I have no WWAN card installed, and have the CD/DVD removed and substituted with an SSD. The main drive is also SSD, bringing down somewhat the power requirements.

    I remember another post, that I can't seem to find now, which refers to a software utility that displays wattage being consumed by the system.  This would be quite helpful.
    Couldn't that be used to study what is being used, and how much of a power adapter is needed to operate the system?
    I am trying to come up with a solution for vehicle usage, and I am afraid, it will have to be a 12V to 120v power inverter with a brick plugged into it.
    Another factor will be the amount of power consumed when recharging the internal 9cell battery and the external 9cell slice. Doing this while operating the system with WiFi / WWAN active will increase the demand.

  • Power supply question or Firewire issue

    I have a workhorse Dual g4 with three internal video drives, three self powered Firewire drives and an internal Gina audio card. Recently I added a USB2 internal card and swapped my Viewsonic LCD for an Apple where the power is coming off the video cable. For the last 2 days my Firewire drives got balky. They mount but when I try to open them I get the interminable spinning beach ball. So far I am able to connect the FW drives to my G4 laptop and they seem to mount ok.
    Am I asking too much from the power supply or is this a fair load?
    Could the Firewire have failed.
    Last week I had a high whine and lockup (heat related?) It's been funny ever since.
    Is there an app that gives the status of the hardware?

    The XServe power supplies (like most modern systems) are rated for 100-240V, so will accept any input voltage in that range.

    My power supply exploded , I think, and I cannot power up the system.  Hopefully this has not affected the rest of the system: chip, graphcard etc.

    I'm sorry some of you are having problems with cheap power supplies.  That is beside the point, however.  I can only state what I know from experience, as I have never taken any classes in switching supply design.  I have absolutely zero (0) problems with cheap supplies.  And any motherboard that is so power hungry that it can itself overdraw a power supply is very poor design.  As I said, I ran my HP Pavilion xt983 with a 200-watt cheap-o PSU with all that stuff in my previous post for over 4 years with no problems (and the PSU still works even after the mobo died from bad capacitors).  I am using it to rebuild the exact same (minus HP mobo) system when the replacement mobo (crappy Chaintech) comes back this week from being repaired under warranty.
    I never said wattage was the only metric - it's just a guide, as no manufacturer I know of specifies exactly how much and what type of current anything they build uses in the computer world (nor would I trust the spec if they did) - it changes under load.  Most people use max figures to decide how much current they need.  I just don't want people thinking they need an expensive PSU to run their good to mediocre PC.  I don't use junk and my PCs last for years on end (actually never had one I built die for any reason, knock on wood).  You do not need a high-wattage or even big namebrand PSU at all, unless you are building a very high-end PC (with light cathodes, water cooling, light kits, multiple every kind of drives, etc. - meaning you plan to abuse the system).  The run-of-the-mill PC needs no more than a cheap (non-junky) PSU that can provide at least 17 amps on the 12V rail.  That's what I use and that's what I recommend.  Wattage should be at 300+ watts to "allow for expansion".  Use the calculator.  See what all you have to add to get up anywhere near 430 Watts.  It can be done, but I would never tax a system that way.  The bottom line is watts are only a limiting factor, not a design factor.  If you add up all the rails on a typical 430-Watt PSU, it is way over 430 watts.  However, if you use all the 12V amps it can turn out and still stay near 12 volts, most of the 5V amps, and most of the 3.3V amps by overloading the system with doodads and whatnots, the 430W limit will matter.  As long as you build what I consider a normal system, you'll never use 430 Watts.  All decent PSUs can supply enough 3.3V and 5V current (should be around 30-40+ amps each), but many of them are deficient on the 12V rail.  Looking for a PSU that can churn out 17+ amps on the 12V rail usually means it can handle about any normal load (meaning single processor, mobo, a HDD or two, a FDD, a few sticks of RAM, and  DR/DVD burner or two, and a few expansion cards with no strange mods like lights and 100 fans, water cooling, etc.) on all rails.
    So, to recap:  For everyday computing, watts are only a limiting factor, so don't get less than 300 in case you really want that power hungry device of the future or want to build a top-end system now.  Current is critical, so don't get anything that's puny on any rail (3.3+5V = ~30-40+ amps each and 12V = 17+ amps).  Ignore all the "this power supply rocks" junk you'll see in bulletin boards and on Newegg (and other retailers) and look at the specs yourself.  Namebrand means as much as you think it does - some have a good rep, some have a bad rep, some have no rep.

    I have a question to pose to the experts. I am building a computer for a friend. He brought me the parts to work on. The motherboard is the MSI P6N SLI and the power supply he brought me is a KWi KingWin Model AP-450 with the following specs:
    +3.3V - 22A
    +5V - 35A
    +12V - 15A
    -12V - .8A
    -5V - .5A
    +5VSB - 3A
    Total - 450W
    The system will contain 2 hard drives, one Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm 80GB SATA the other a Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm 40GB IDE.
    It will also have a SATA DVD burner and a XFX GeForce 8600 video card which does not have a power input.
    CPU is an Intel 925 dual core chip.
    In your opinion, will the 450W power supply be good enough to keep this system stable?

    Total watts is pretty useless these days. It is more important that each rail has current reserve beyond what is attached to that rail. A poster in another thread had a 1000W power supply with 4 rails that he spent nearly $300 on. Each individual rail was spec-ed lower than the minimum for the motherboard almost all the excess power was on the drive connectors not the motherboard connectors and the 4 +12V rails were not helping the motherboard since only 1 rail was supplying the +12V to the motherboard. So in this instance a 500W supply that only has 1 rail that is 25A on the +12V is more powerful than the 1000W supply. In this case, the 500W power supply would be fine for powering up the motherboard alone, that particular 1000W supply would not.
    Lesson here:
    You can't just throw Watts at your system without determining where those Watts are going.
    It only takes 1 leg of your power supply to be too weak, for the existing setup, to make things act weird. Doesn't matter how much reserve power you have on the other legs. 1A too weak and any chip can power down in the middle of things doesn't matter if you have a 2000W supply that cost $1000.
    The components in your computer do not care about how cool your power supply looks. They don't care if it has LED fans or UV connectors or braided sleeves. It doesn't matter how much it costs. Once you find a list of power supplies that will work for your system, then look for adequate cooling, enough of the right connectors, etc. The 2nd to the last in the decision process should be glossy paint and lastly the price. Of course you may want to purchase that clear case power supply with 3 color LED 120mm fan. It may just be a conversation piece sitting on the shelf if it won't work in your system.
    Good examples:
    The first one may in-fact be the best one for a particular motherboard. The last one may not even power up a basic quad core system business workstation. You must research what you are buying. Don't just look at how cool it is.

    My guess is that 2800w power supply is looking for two legs of AC in to make the DC stable on the switch.   I've installed a lot of 45XXx over the years but I never have more than 100 ports of active POE on them as most buildings have lots of computers and printers and a few VOIP phones and access points.  
    Now, those power supplies are pretty fault tolerent and well built.  They can take (probably) swing voltage from 40-240V and 50-60Hz.    You can wire up the L6-30 into the TWLK cable and only have 20A of 120V on one leg from the output of your UPS.     You just have a single 30A hot, neutral and ground and a dead leg for hot into the power supply.   You use half the power supply.  
    The capacitors on the power supply will just have to absorb that and deal with it.   That's their job.  Short term batteries. 
    One thing you need to realize is that you don't have to have two full-capacity 2800w circuits for the switch.   The 2800 is a reference number and that's based on a lot of inneffiencies in the entire system.  
    You've got at max a 2800w load and either 1 or two power supplies will feed it.    Two power supplies will be slightly less efficient than one but you're not pulling 5600w.   
    If you could, answer the questions above on the number of POE devices you've got and we can work a solution to solve the power to the switch and to your nodes.  
    You've got a lot of expensive, quality gear and the best solution isn't always to double up and re-buy what you've got.  
    I am going to recommend a metered PDU so that you can watch the amperage as when you approach the limit of what your wires can haul, you need to pay attention to the national electric code.

  • MDD power supply and fan upgrade kit question.

    Hello, Its been a few years since I posted anything here and I'm getting ready to (possibly) trade in my mirror drive door 1GHZ dual processor machine on one of the current imac-s.
    I'm not real hopeful that putting much work into my current machine is worth it. Here's why:
    1) crazy levels of noise - I wear woodworking hearing protectors when I surf the web. Listening to music on itunes is fine so long as you like a background of low level blow dryer noise!
    2) I'm still running OSX version 10.2.8, I have been too cheap to buy the latest OS. I'm tempted to go out and spend the $119 on 10.5 but I only have the original 256mb of ram installed and since the min requirement of ram is 512, I know I'll need to spend an extra ~50$ on a 512mb PC2700 ram chip. My price tag to do a minimal update is rising...
    3) I would love to neutralize the noise and install the Apple provided MDD power supply and fan retrofit kit that they sent me at no charge several years ago while I was still under warranty. But I never did because the tech at my local (Dayton Ohio) reseller told me that the kit only addressed high noise levels when rebooting in OS9. So I never bothered. Looking on ebay, I see where power supplies for G4's could fetch 75 or 100$ or so.
    In summary, here are my questions.
    1) Has anything come along recently to tame MDD G4 fan noise that is easy to install, cost-effective and most of all, something that actually works to decrease the noise?
    2) To get the quietest, quickest performance with the current OS 10.5 should I cut my losses now and trade (or sell on ebay) my MDD, sell the new power supply and just purchase a new machine with the OS already installed?

    Carl has some pretty good points that I'd agree with - trying the replacement PSU and fans should quiet it down somewhat and replacing the stock main fan with a newer, quieter unit will also help. But I'm going to disagree with him on running Leopard on the G4's with a few reservations.
    As you might notice from my profile, I'm running Leopard on my dual-867 MDD and find the performance acceptable; perhaps a little slower than Tiger in some respects but it does run well enough within the limitations of the G4's capabilities. The reservation I have about recommending Leopard on a G4 is the graphics card - without Core Image support (which you won't have unless you upgrade the video card) Leopard is going to tax the CPU more and may bog down in some tasks like Quick Look and Cover Flow.
    In the end, whether to continue upgrading the G4 is a matter of use and economics. Tiger would be a fine upgrade with minimal cost and squeeze a few more years out of your G4 if you're not requiring software that needs an Intel CPU (like certain iLife '08 apps).

    I just purchased a new T400 2764-CTO which has the discrete video.  I replaced a three year old T43 with a screen that failed.  Lenovoi told me my two port replicators for the T43 would work on the T400.  That proved to be an error.  So now I am in the market for a T400 port replicator.  I am looking at the Lenovo Thinkpad Advanced Mini-Dock 250410U.  I have purchased two power supplies and so do not need another power supply.  I don't trust Lenovo for an accurate answer.
    My questions: Can I purchase an Advanced Mini Dock without the power supply?  And secondly, will this Mini-dock work with the T400 2764-CTO.  (I am running Vista Business as my sole OS.)

    yes, 250410U is the correct part number for the advanced mini dock compatible with the T400.
    it is sold with an a/c adapter and unfortunately cannot be purchased separately.   you could, however, resell the adapter if you don't want it.   forum.thinkpads.com has a free marketplace if you're interested.
