Preflight errors for PDF/A-1a

We are encountering problems with preflight when we testing documents that use CID fonts with our conversion product . We get the following error messages:
CIDSystemInfo and CMap dict not compatible
Invalid WMode
Having examined the output carefully, there does not appear to be a problem in out output. The CIDSystemInfo for both the CIDFont object and the CMap object are exactly the same. Additionally, we are not writing a WMode into our fonts, since it is an optional entry, and we do not handle vertical writing mode anyway. Adding a WMode parameter in the appropriate places does not fix the error anyway.
What I suspect is happening is that Preflight is not happy with the Registry and Ordering that we are using in the CIDSystemInfo. We set the Registry to "CompanyName" and the Ordering to "Custom1". I have seen other tools complain when faced with unexpected values for the registry and Ordering, and have a feeling that is what is going on here, but our customers aren't going to be happy hearing that.
Here is some background on how our documents are created. We create our text stream using the character code from the original document. We then add each unique character code to a set of character codes. When document processing is complete, we subset the font to only the used characters. We can then create a CMap that maps the input character code to the glyph index in the subsetted font. The glyph index becomes the CID in our encoding. The CIDToGIDMap is "Identity". We also then create a ToUnicode map with the original character code mapped to Unicode.
Documents created by our product view just fine, and text is able to be extracted correctly. Our problem lies in the error messages reported by Preflight.
Any help with diagnosing this error would be greatly appreciated. I would be willing to send s sample document to anyone willing to help.
Thanks,
Michael Ryan

It doesn't seem to matter what the Registry/Ordering is - I still get the error. I do recall that setting it to something known like Adobe and Japan1 had other effects, though, such as incorrectly chosen glyphs, though those could have been related to other issues we had at the time.
Since any value seems to prompt the issue, it leaves me even more confused as to what could be the root of this problem. Distiller seems to bypass embedding CMaps by using the "Identity" encoding and simply writing the glyph indeces into the text stream. Does Preflight just not like embedded CMaps?
I have uploaded a sample document to acrobat.com if anyone wants to take a look. It has several changes from the original description, in an attempt to root out the problem. Here is the URL:

Thanks again for any help.

  • Preflight errors for PDF/A?

I'm checking PDFs that were created via scanning on our copier (hoping to conver to PDF/A) and am getting Preflight results in Acrobat that don't make sense.  Why do I get different error results if I "analyze" for compliance, versus choosing the "convert" option?  I understand why this document might have compliance issues, but why aren't the same issues coming up in the two Preflight options?  (And no, I didn't choose 1b compliance for the one option and 1a for the other.)  I got different error results when I "analyzed" for 1a, and when I attempted to "convert" to 1a for the same document.
    Thoughts?

  • Extended use error for PDF form

    Hi,
I have created a form with a pdf background that is stored on a shared server.  Most users access the form with Adobe Reader X.  When originally created, the feature to enable usage rights in Adobe Reader were enabled.  I updated the form to correct the text length allowed in a particular field.  Now when you access the form via Reader X, the following error message appears and the form no longer works.  This does not occur if the form is opened in Acrobat Professional or Standard, but most users have Reader X.  Can anyone please help?

You lose the extended features on a PDF any time you modify a PDF with Livecycle.
After modifying your PDF with Livecycle you open it again with Adobe Pro X and save this PDF as a Reader Extended PDF.

  • Checking for PDF 1.7 compatibility in Preflight (Acrobat 9 Pro)

    Hi,
I've noticed that in the given Preflight profiles in Acrobat 9 there is no compatibility check for PDF 1.7, only 1.6. is there a profile i can load? or a set of checks i can make a profile in order to determine 1.7 compatibility?
    Thanks,
    Yair Agmon.

    Hi,
Knowing a PDF file's version premits deduction of what version "compatibility" is present.
Version 1.7 (Acrobat 8.x) lacks compatibility for Acrobat 9.x specific features.
Version 1.6 (Acrobat 7.x) lacks compatibility for Acrobat 8.x specific features.
    And so forth.
Certainly, not an elegantly simple approach; but, nevertheless it is functional.
    Using Acrobat Professional/Extended 9.x -
    Open the Preflight dialog.
    Advanced > Preflight
From the Options drop-down menu, Select "New Preflight Profile".
The Prefight: Edit Profile dialog opens.
A default profile name is provided (New Profile <number>).
Initially, Click the Save button to save the profile. You can rename it later.
Note that "New Profile" is placed in "Custom
Now, locate your "New Profile" in the column at the left of the dialog and select
    "Custom checks".
The available custom checks list loads in the pane to the right.
Above and to the right is a "Find" field.
    Enter the string "version".
    A filtered list appears.
A custom check is available for "versions newer than":
    1.2 | 1.3 | 1.4 | 1.5 | 1.6 | 1.7
and there is a custom check for "version older than 1.3".
Add the desired custom check to the profile. Save.
Configure the check for Error | Warning | Info
Info is "Notification" in the report that can be provided.
Once you have configured "New Profile" it can be used by a Batch Sequence to check multiple files.
When a Preflight is selected for use by a Batch Sequence you can configure for a "on success" and/or "on error" report.
    Be well...

    Hi Guus,
We are not using the new authorizations we are still  on 3.5 authorization and we tried for an user with SAP_ALL, SAP_NEW authorization , so i am not sure if this is an authorization problem.
We have a new issue on hand, initially i was able to broadcast thru xml, mhtml, xml formats, yesterday our portal was down, when the portal was brought up, i found that even the ones that were working were  now throwing an error.
I spoke with the basis person, and he told me user mappings were lost, but even after restoring the user mapping were restored we still have the problem.
If this error is caused by lack of new authorization, atleast we know what we are dealing with, but for now iam not sure if this error is due to authorization or some settings on the web server side.

    Hi
Yes as Eltan says you need to consider there are two blocks of abap program:
    - the first one is the driver program (but it seems there's no problem here because it called the smartform quickly)
    - the second one is inside the smartform (It's possible to write abap routine in the smartform), and it seems the problem could be here
The variable c_form_name has the name of the smartform, you can manage it by transaction SMARTFORMS
but now it's not possible to say you why the print takes too long time, you need to do a trace

  • Some elements of downloaded PDF not showing (Error: "For the best experience, open this PDF portfolio...")

I'm on a PC attempting to view a downloaded PDF. It's an application so the document is generated by our online system and aggregates info from the applicant as well as documents they uploaded. I can see most of the final product but the document uploaded by the applicant gives the error "For the best experience, open this PDF portfolio in Acrobat 9 or Adobe Reader 9, or later." I downloaded the latest Reader (DC) and when I searched to download the latest Flash Player I got a message that it should be up-to-date since I use Chrome. I've seen other folks having this problem; any suggestions?? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your response! The document appears the same either way. I downloaded the file and have opened it with both Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.

  • I would like to combine my word files to a pdf and i get errors for pdfmaker

i would like to combine my word files to a pdf and i get errors for pdfmaker

is it 32 bit or 64 bit. you can check it by following the steps mentioned below
In the program in which you want to verify the version, click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Program_Name Options.
Click Resources, and then click About.
To locate the About Microsoft Program_Name dialog box in programs that do not use the Ribbon user interface,  click About on the Help menu.

  • [CS4 JS] Test for Preflight Errors

    Hi,
Is it possible to test for preflight errors. If so, how?
I want to allow export of an EPS only if an embedded preflight profile shows no errors.
    Thanks
    Simon Kemp

    var myPreflight = app.preflightProcesses[0];
    var myReport = myPreflight.processResults;
    myReport = myReport.replace(/\s+$/,"");
    if (myReport == "None")
My problem is that this script doesn't distinguish between the Preflight for the current document and that for any other document that may be open. I assume it is using the FIRST Preflight process created which will not always be for the current document.
Is there a way to reference the Preflight for the current document only? Searching for "Preflight" in the Object Model Viewer in ExtendScript Toolkit bring up No Results.
maybe you should check this "array":
    Property AggregatedResults As Variant
        read-only
        Member of InDesign.PreflightProcess
The aggregated results found by the process. Type: Ordered array containing DocumentName:String, ProfileName:String, Results:Array of Ordered array containing ParentNodeID:Long Integer, ErrorName:String, PageNumber:String, ErrorInfo:String, ErrorDetail:Array of Ordered array containing Label:String, Description:String
or maybe you should set PreflightScope - to your Document - in PreflightOptions:
    Property PreflightScope As Variant
        Member of InDesign.PreflightOption
The pages or documents to preflight, specified either as an enumeration or a string. To specify a range, separate page numbers in the string with a hyphen (-). To specify separate pages, separate page numbers in the string with a comma (,). Type: idPreflightScopeOptions enumerator or String

I have run a permissions repair, rebooted and it just doesnt want to let me install. My Install.app is present in /System/Library/CoreServices/Installer.app and have installed all the latest updates for 10.5
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I'm having the same problem. I cannot instal Ilife on my new Imac.
I first tried to install all programs together via the installation guide. but it kept crashing without any reason.
after that I tried to install each program seperately via the customized installation guide but again the installation guide crashed.
for each program the following messages appeared:
run preflight script for iphoto, Imovie etc.
So what can I do about this. The warning message said I had to contact the manufacturer.
    Thanks

  • Preflight error message . . .

Hi - never needed to use this forum before, but I've found the Indesign lot incredibly helpful on various occasions in the past.
I'm running CS4 on XP pro, the whole suite is installed in its own separate partition on a non system drive, and I also have CS1 (less acrobat) on another drive which is used occasionally.
Everything in CS4 runs perfectly - apart from acrobat preflight. Preflight in Indy works fine, and I export PDFs in whichever flavour I require. I had previously used Pitstop Pro for validation, but didn't update it as Acro 9 seemed to have all the tools I need.
However, it's not worked since I installed the suite 9 months ago, I've tried lots of differing files but it always throws up the attached error mmesage.
The preflightlib.dll file is present and correct, so I wondered if anyone can give me a clue how to solve it - I don't really want to re-install, unless it's necessary, as evrything else runs prefectly, and I only need the preflight occasionally.
    TIA - Alastair

"As I understand it, PDF/A 1-b norm requires all fonts to be included into the PDF file. But what happens when the author of the document used a font that I don't have on my computer ? Does it mean that in thoses cases I won't be able to create a PDF/A 1-b version for archiving purposes ?"
Yes, and yes. You have to embed it (rules of PDF/A) and therefore you have to own it. There doesn't seem to be any way around this.
It's certainly not the case that every PDF can be made suitable for PDF/A.

  • Preflight error: "character references .notdef glyph"

I have a 4 page document in InDesign that I exported as separate page pdfs. Three pages were fine, but one has garbled type. A preflight check shows this error for the bad text on that one page:
    "Character references .notdef glyph"
I can't see anything different about those sentences, but tried replacing them with fresh type. Also tried exporting the InDesign document as an INX file and reopening it. Tried copying the page to a fresh document. None of these worked. I'm baffled. I use that font for this newspaper every month and have never seen this problem before, although this is the first time with the CS4 apps.
I can convert the text to outline, but want to solve this.
    Thanks for any ideas.
    (Mac Pro, CS4 software)

The font is Utopia regular, a postscript type 1 font. InDesign version CS4, Quark 6 I believe. The pdf was created in InDesign (export.. Adobe PDF..press quality, PDF/X1A 2001). I also tried exporting a postscript file and running it through Distiller, but got the same result.
This is the same font and same method I have been using for a long time, the only thing that is new is CS4 versions of ID and Acrobat. The rest of the document did not have these errors. I tried pasting the text into a text program (and then pasting back) to clear away possible formatting, but that didn't help.
    Hope you have some suggestions.
    Thanks

  • File in Use error deleting PDF in Windows 8.1 SkyDrive

I'm using SkyDrive and have ran into an interesting issue.
I'm also using Adobe Acrobat XI Standard
When I save a PDF file to SkyDrive in Windows 8.1, it becomes difficult to delete the file via the file explorer
I get a "File In Use" error - "The action can't be completed because the file is open in another program" - yet it's not.
It gives me the option to "Try Again" and I click that about 4 times, getting the same error, and then after the 4th time, it allows the deletion of the file.
If I were to save the PDF to my desktop, it deletes immediately.
It seems to only be in the SkyDrive directory where it's an issue
Other document types do not have this problem.
I am using the standard security within Windows 8.1, and it hasn't detected a virus.
All newly created PDF files are acting like this.  Non-PDF files are deleting properly.
So it's not existing/old files, or non-PDF files.

Only for PDFs.  Acrobat and Reader are not running while deleting the file.
In looking into this further, the Modern app for SkyDrive shows these files as awaiting updates on SkyDrive - even after 24 hours later.  Until they are updated, they continue to have this issue within the File Explorer view.
I would say that this is a SkyDrive issue, but it’s only related to PDFs.  Word, Excel, JPGs, etc. all function properly.  It seems to be some interaction between Acrobat or PDFs and SkyDrive.
