Printer on Powerbook + Software questions

Hi there!
I'm new to these boards as well as new to Apple. I have just purchased a Powerbook 15" and have some questions.
I have an hp deskjet printer...would I be able to hook my powerbook to that? Or are there specific apple friemdly printers I can purchase? Its nothing fancy, just some essays for school and resumes.
Also...when I ordered my Appple I didn't include any "software"...like iworks. Will my powerbook contain a word processing program? Or do I have to purchase office software?
One last question.... What is the easiest way to transfer music, photo and word documents from my PC to my new powerbook? Will they be recognized?

--with my new PB, my HP deskjet 960 works great. The PB had the drivers already installed.
--you can get a student discount to purchase Office 2004 for Mac if you don't want to purchase iWorks. Your PB will have a trial verson of iWorks on it to try out. You can also use Simple Text, but the formatting doesn't always hold up in a MS Word environment.

Problem printing from some software versions

Am assuming it has something to do with the (Adobe?) sepcifics of the machine since the same software on a G4 (10.4) Powerbook will print fine.
Machine: G4, 10.4.11
Printer: wireless HP6890,
Software: Just installed Acrobat Reader 6 then 8, will not print any PDF file. Can print PDF from Reader 5 (if 5 can open) or from Photoshop.
Software: InDesign CS2 & CS3, will not print. Can print from CS. Have tried re-installing InDesign.

Can print with Preview, Photoshop, Acrobat 5 (provided v5 can open the file).
So does not appear to be a problem with the PDF files or the printer connection.

If you mean the printer that shows in System Preferences Print and Fax, yes.
Error messages say "the process pictwpstops / pstopdffilter stopped"

Cleaned the font cache but do not think it is fonts as can not print a PDF page that is only a graphic.
As noted at the Adobe forum the machine can print if 'print as image' is selected but that is a workaround, not an answer to the problem.

HP 6500A - Can't get into printer "control panel software" to check ink level, etc.

First let me apologize... I don't know what the correct name is for the software that starts up when you use the printer icon that was installed on my computer's desktop when I installed the printer. I am calling it the "control panel software" for want of a better name.
My printer was setup to work wirelessly on my wireless network and was working fine. The "control panel software" worked fine when I click on the icon on my desktop and I was able to check the ink levels, etc.
I just got a new router and so I had to reconfigure my printer to use my new wireless network settings. It wasn't working properly, so I decided to uninstall and reinstall the HP software for the printer. As part of this it put a new icon on my computer's desktop for accessing the printer "control panel software", another new icon for the scan function, and another for the ePrint Service.
The printer works fine... I can print and scan properly. It successfully connected to my new wireless network and I thought all was well. However, this is not the case.
What is weird is that the "control panel software" icon doesn't take me to the control panel functions any more. When I click on it it takes me back through the process of setting up the printer connection (wireless, wired, USB) again. If I go through that again it tells me everything is installed and lets me set the default printer again and then asks me to register again. So... I think I'm done, but then if I click on the icon again, it goes through this same process again.
Is there any way to stop this endless connection setup and just get to the "control panel software"?
Any help appreciated.

What operating system? I recommend not using the software CD as it may be out of date. Get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page.

If you did not get an OS X install-restore DVD with the computer you may need
to buy one from somewhere, and you may be lucky to get a retail OS X 10.5.x
version. The original grey-label install set of software and OS X it shipped with
likely would be an older system than Leopard 10.5. Last versions of G4 Mac, &
G5, shipped with a Tiger 10.4 system; so did early Intel-based Mac. Grey discs
which accompanied other computer build models generally do not interchange.
The last OS X version a PowerPC architecture can use, if supported, is 10.5.8.
A PPC processor at 867MHz & faster should be able to run OS X 10.5 Leopard.
{With the correct disc installer, you can use it to change a password and other
things including re-install, and perform disk utility functions, etc.}
There is a chance you may be able to get a white-label Replacement 10.4 DVD
or Replacement 10.5 DVD from AppleCare or the online Apple Store (800myapple)
from a Mac OS X system specialist; these have been available yet hard to get
as not all persons involved with them seem to know if they still exist until someone
is asking. These aren't retail stock, are special discs for computers who could use
a system later than original old discs; these are complete install discs not for one
specific series of Mac. Generally they'd work in supported PowerPC G4/G5; but
do not replace specialized original install DVD, such as an early Intel mac requires.
You'd need to have a serial number of the computer, and a method of payment
when seeking some replacement system media from Applecare or Apple sales
and these discs are not available in a retail store. The original Retail discs are
labeled differently and shipped in a retail box with a big X on the front. Other
sources for retail 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard may be online via amazon sellers
or computer resellers who handle repaired Macs. Avoid mystery grey label ones
that were intended to be sold and kept with their original computer kits.

Hp Laserjet 4200, Printer Virus or Software Failure?

Have been using a HP Laserjet 4200/4300 series, very few issues, very good printer.
Background:
Small office, this printer is attached to my computer but able to be used by 4 other machines on the network.
We are using everything from windows ME to Windows 7 xp.
What happened:
all day long we were printing & by the afternoon it just stopped. At that time only 2 computers had sent in print requests. Mine was sending Page prints of gov web sites using the latest version of mozilla firefox and I am running Windows 7 xp and the 2nd was sending Word Perfect docs and its on XP. In going through the Que, the printer says they all now have unspecified errors and will not print.
Printer/Proterties/General - print test page
Will not print
Hardware/Menu/Print test, cleaning, Menu map.. all print
Device is Working
Paper is full
Ink is in
Since then I have cleared the Que and sent several different types of things to print from all different types of programs.. the print manager say they all have errors.
So.. Printer Virus or Software Failure?

Just got off the phone with a friend (who is a lot smarter than I) and recommended turning off the printer, then truning it back on and holding down the mainuser button (the one with the check mark) and letting the printer do its thing.
just printed the test page.. so good news there. Still not sure what exactly happened..

Multiple copies of same printer confuses HP software

My Officejet J4580 seems to install itself twice. Yesterday I reinstalled the driver/software hoping to reduce the choice to one default printer, but it happened again -- within a day, I again have "HP Officejet Series J4500" and "HP Officejet Series J4500 (Copy 1)", plus a fax version of each, making 4 printer choices.
If I'm lucky, HP Solutions will detect the correct version of the printer. If I'm not lucky, it looks for the wrong one and claims it's not there. To fix this is chancy -- sometimes unplugging, sometimes restarting the printer or the software, sometimes rebooting, and sometimes waiting a day is the only solution.
In addition, some software will default to the fax version so often I can't just print something to the default printer, I have to choose the printer every time. (In the Control Panel, only the printers show as devices, not the fax version of them.)
Anybody have any suggestions?

am having a similar issue with my HP Officejet 4500 All-In-One (Wireless) Printer. In each of my applications (Word, Excel, Email, etc.), when I choose the print button and open up the Print box, all of my print options are listed. In the print options listed, there are two (sometimes more) copies of the same Printer (ex: HP Officejet 4500 All-In-One, HP Officejet 4500 All-In-One (Copy 1)...). Most of the time it is just two of the same printer. One is online and the other seems “not available”.
In all other locations where the printer is listed (i.e. network, printer device lists) only see one copy, but in each application, it is listed twice or more in the printing box.
I have uninstalled the Printer and reinstalled it several times, but that does not seem to clear the issue. I only have this one printer installed, no others. It is wireless and set up as a wireless printer on the home network (no hard wire set-up). I have two laptops sharing this printer wirelessly (an HP and a Toshiba). Multiple copies on both Laptops. I am running Windows 7 (64bit) on the HP and Windows 7 (32bit) on the Toshiba.
If some else has this same issue and knows how to correct it, please help.

Adobe Photoshop Elements does not recognize printer..error message says you must install printer. Other software does print documents.

Try opening an image in full edit, then press crtl+p
Wait for the print dialog to open and try to select your printer by clicking the dropdown menu.

Serial adapter printing requires added software?

Under 10.3.9 I had to install extra software to print to my HP DeskWriter 680C via Keyspan USA-28 dual usb serial adapter. In Tiger, I've found an HP 600 series printer driver and CUPS web control ( http://localhost:631 ), but no clear way to specify a serial port. Matt Broughton's comments on adding a StyleWriter indicate serial print still requires software installation under 10.4.x ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2196459&#2196459 ). Should I proceed? Tiger doesn't include serial printer support?

Not quite. With the USB to serial adapter and its drivers, the serial port is now functional in OS X. We must now turn to the printing software used by Mac OS X. CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) is used in OS X for printing. As supplied by Apple, however, the CUPS software does not provide support for communicating with serial ports. I have compiled serial backends (serial communications software) that enable this on my website about serial printing in Mac OS X.. There is also a PDF pictorial guide on how to add a serial printer available for download.
So this is a multilayer process.
1. Get an adapter -- the Keyspan adapter
2. Get the serial ports recognized by OS X -- the Keyspan drivers.
3. Get the serial ports recognized by CUPS -- my Serial Print Enabler.
4. Get printer drivers -- for the HP DeskWriter, Gutenprint (Gimp-Print drivers work well). You could also use the hpijs package from linuxprinting.org.
5. Configure the printer through the CUPS web interface. Printer Setup Utility does not have a capability to deal with serial ports.
The StyleWriter situation is a bit different in that it uses a different driver called "lpstyl". The StyleWriter driver needs direct communication with the printer rather than through a serial backend. Therefore, the lpstyl driver contains all the necessary code to use the serial port. No other serial print enabler is required. That is why it is not mentioned in my post about the StyleWriter.

Original powerbook software

I remember having a language program that came with my G4 aluminum 15 inch powerbook. I trashed it shortly after I got it but need it now. It is not the simple translation program but gave lessons in multiple foreign languages. I reinstalled the powerbook software I also used pacifist to look through Panther and Tiger but cannot find it. Any ideas where this program was and what it was called. Thanks.

Desktop Print 2.0 software?

On an iMac (Tiger) G5 using Classic Mode, I've installed an old copy (legit) of Rhapsody, from which I want to print music on my HP Officjet 7130xi. The music looks great but when I try to print it I get "This printer cannot print because this application is not AppleEvent aware and you have not installed Desktop Print 2.0 software." I do, however, get an option immediately thereafter to print it to a Postscript (.ps) file. From that I can use Adobe Acrobat Standard and convert it to a .pdf file. Even then I had problems until I discovered that "Advanced Print Options" enable you to select "print as an image file." That, finally, works. My oh my! How do I simplify this process?

Big bag of worms uncovered. Must continue thru the .ps to .pdf route. Reasons have to do with "Chooser" choices made available. Selecting LaserWriter 8 produces the error messages, and the default of saving to a .ps file (original problem). (2) Selecting HP OfficeJet Fax produces a print error message. No additional "OfficeJet" icon is available. Even after completely re-installing HP software drivers (new edition!). (3) Selecting hp aio print v5.71 produces printed copy on the HP officejet 7130xi, but the vertical staff lines (music) are seriously distorted. The printed image is not at all acceptable. So for now, at least while I am studying the Rhapsody software, it looks like all printing must be done from Preview or Acrobat. Looks like I've got to upgrade my Rhapsody software to v.X!

Printer software question..

Was just wondering if anyone can recommend a brand of all-in-one printer that does not require the installing of mass amounts of manufacturer software. I had an HP all in one that required the installation of HP software (photozone, memory maker, scanning apps, among several other programs). It was almost impossible to keep from launching on startup and always seemed to show up in my dock. It always tried to default to the hp software when I would do anything with my photos. I tried uninstalling some of the apps I didn't need, but then the ones I needed wouldn't work. I felt all this extra software was really cluttering up my imac's simplicity. Just wondering if canon or epson's all in one's are any better as I have looked at a couple of their models. Thanks.

I have had three different printers connected to my iMac (HP, Canon and Epson all in one) While all would plug, print and show printer utility out of the box, the scan features needed to be installed. I also hate the clutter, have you tried to install only the scan portion from the manufacturers disk? This should give you the plug, print, utility and the scan featurers to where ??? you will have to work on that part. I think it might be worth spending a little time on it.

Network printing?? 2 questions for m1217 mf printer

I have new m1217 mf printer. on hp desktop with Win7 Ultimate, using ethernet as printer will not do both ethernet and Wi-Fi at same time.
I got it because it has both ethernet and WiFi. I won't go there about support telling me it will do both, just not at SAME TIME. Imagine having a router that says same thing!!
My last network printer, a Canon, would turn on and print when a document was sent to it.
This one does not.
So, Is this the way it should be.
A related question is I have set printer to turn off after 15 minutes, but it seems to stay on for hours [just until before one of us sends a doc to the printer 8-(
How do I get it to turn off at the 15 minutes [this is 15 min. of nonuse of printer]

I just purchased a canon isense mf4018 for our office. We have a mac mini os x 1.5.8 and a pc windows xp sp3. we are experiencing a printing problem from the mini. we aren't using a network. we just swap the usb cable between computers when printing is needed. The error that occurs is 'load correct paper MP tray: ltr; cancel: sys. monitor.' This looks like it only happens when we print from Word for Mac when printing more than one copy of the document. Excel printed multiple copies fine. If i go to sys monitor and print status, I find the word doc option to cancel or continue print. I choose yes to cancel and it prints another copy of the doc. the error still exists. I go through that routine until all copies have been printed. Scanning doesn't work. How do i install d110 printer solution center software so it will actually run like is supposed to?

I have been battling this issue for six months with no end in sight!!! I have 3 ACER laptops with Windows 7 Home Premium and an HP Photosmart D110 printer. I installed the software onto all 3 systems and they worked great (for about a month). One of the laptops is still running HP Solution Center very vell but the other 2 allways give me the message that software did not install successfully and the install process does not "find" the wireless printer. I have uninstalled and insalled the software about 25 times with no success even after following the so-called solutions posted by the experts. One of the laptops was returned to Acer for a bad hard drive and when it was returned with a clean Win 7 install, I attempted to install the D110 again (same problem). I can print from all of the laptops but I'm only able to use Solution Center from 1 of them. Any other suggestions before I throw the printer and software disc into the trash? With all of the issues that I've seen on the forums concerning HP printer software, I would think that someone in power at HP would get to the bottom of these issues and patch their software.

I have some questions that will help with troubleshooting.
What kind of firewall and antivirus software do you use on the laptops? Are they all the same laptop models?
Does your printer have a static IP address set?
Does the software fail when it comes to locating the printer on the network or does it state "The software installation is not complete" when you try to run Solution Center after installation?
If you could, please summarize any troubleshooting you have already done. Did the HP Print and Scan Doctor give any errors or indicate a problem? http://www.hp.com/go/tools

1)is it possible to plug the berry to the pc and have it show up in my computer so i can juggle stuff around from sd card to device memory and back and forth?
i down loaded the usb and modem drivers eng (dm4.6 b13) that xandrex posted, and my phone settings i believ are right options-memoery on-no-prompt, yet it still is not showing up. it wasent even showing up when i had the desk top software on my pc. my first bold worked just fine like that then i got another one and it wont, i been tryen figure out for weeks.. pppppppppppllllleeeeaasssse help
2) ok keep in mind what i said in umber 1:::::::this is what i did to try to fix it.

i tryed this several times, and i have older cds with older versions and none of them would load all the same message, sooooooooo now im worst of than i was before. i not only cant get to my device memory still three my windows explorer, (ps media manager would not work either when i did have the software on here)now i cant even get the application loader which i use alot too. cause the software wont load.man im not a pc wiz but im not a retard either,the instructions were very very every well written, and went very smothly,except i was ent sure about were to put a space on a file that iwas directed to rename ,when i was deleateing everything. im a river boat pilot and my berry is my a big part of my life my connection to the world and my family 5 kids and my whole digital life haha thats funny to me.anyway i would really really appreciate any info or help anyone can send my way, and i will pay it forward . yall have a pretty tight site here, i been doing the crackberry thing but man yall have sum good info here                            thanks again   chris

You definitley need to run the clean procedure:
KB02206 How to perform a clean uninstall of BlackBerry Desktop Software.
Remove the other copies of the drivers here.
5.service packs????not sure what u mean im green a little Windows issues service packs for the OS
6.as of right now i uninstaled the driver i loaded last night and uninstaled the desktop software again,so as far as i know nothing is instaled right this minute;

Uninstall them, then install the fresh copy of the 4.7 device drivers
I have not yet did the clean uninstall (that yall suggested in that post) since last night. after i did all that last night,i installed the driver and berry would not show up on windows explorer,so then i tried to install desktop again and it left that message on my original post up top,so I restored my commuter and desktop was there again and working (I only really use app loader)    then I uninstaled it again.(not the clean way this time) and started installing and unistalling the drivers ,which lead to no prevail.            I would like to be able to use the app loader,and I would REALLY like for my phone to show up on my PC again so i can juggle my media around from SD card to device and all that stuff.

I have desktop software cd's 4.3 and 4.6        I like the 4.3 version better one more fact (don't know if will help u) this is my second bold my first bold everything worked it showed up on windows explorer and desktop worked then it broke and I got another one and I changed nothing and this one will not show up on PC and media deal on the desktop software wont work,which I don't care bout that if it whould show up on windows explorer.
At the end of this install try connecting the Blackberry to the PC without Desktop manager running.
See if the device comes up correctly. If not run Windows update with the Blackberry plugged in. The
device should be recognized and the device drivers added.

Can anyone out there help, after a recent Apple software update my Epson Stylus Photo RX640 will no longer print, every other aspect of the printer works fine including the scanner but it just will not print, I sent an email to apple but all i got was an automated reply directing me to their support page, the email i sent is below this explains in full what the problem is & what i have done to try & fix this problem.

I have spent days trying to fix this, i have been onto Epsons website & followed their resolution for this error message to no avail, after contacting them again with the results i got an email back saying : In response to your email, the RX640 will use an inbox or gutenprint driver on Mac OS X 10.6.8, it is not compatible with an Epson driver.
I have also tried re-installing drivers from original Discs for the printer but it still will not print, obviously this error has been caused by Apple's latest software update, when are Apple going to fix this problem? i need my printer working ASAP.

It is hardly Apple's fault that Epson can't/won't update their driver, but at least Epson suggest that you use the Gutenprint driver, which in any case is far better that what Epson offer.
