Printing in GTK apps cause app to lockup for a few [SOLVED]

On my laptop I dont normally have a printer hooked to it directly.  Normally I would create PDF's or PS files and transfer them to one of my other systems and print from there.
However, now I have a HP PSC 1410 that is working on the laptop.  I have it setup in CUPS and both printer and scanner parts are working perfectly.... from KDE based apps.
Whenever I try and print anything from Firefox, or OpenOffice, I get a significant delay (upwards of 10 minutes) before the dialog box opens, and when it does it doesnt show the printer that was setup in CUPS.
On my other systems, printing from firefox never caused any problems.
I had noticed this behaviour before I installed this current printer, and I am suspicious that I might have messed something up when trying to setup network printing to a windows machine some time ago.
I've been looking and looking and kind find any problem with settings, nor can I google for help because the only terms I can think of to describe the problem are so generic that I get nothing that relates to my problem.
Anyone had this problem?  Anyone got an idea on where to start?    In a possibly related note, my vmware has a delay in it when starting up too.   Havent nailed that one down either.
Archlinux has been installed on this laptop since before 0.6 was released, so its not a new installation.

Ok, I found the problem.   While looking at some gtk stuff, I discovered gtklp.  When I ran it, the first time it seemed to get stuck.  So I figured that there must be something wrong with some gtk settings somewhere.  I let it sit for a few minutes and then killed the process.
After messing around some more, I tried it again, same thing.  This time I didnt kill it.  After quite some time, it came back with an error saying that it couldnt connect to 192.168.4.110.   That happened to be the IP address of my old server that is no longer there.  That got me curious, so I did a search for files containing that string, and found /etc/cups/client.conf.   I looked in there and had ServerName set to that IP.   I must of done that at some point trying out something.  Putting ServerName at 127.0.0.1 seems to have fixed my printing problems.
I figured it was something stupid I did a long time ago, and I was at least right about that

  • Music app stops playing for a few seconds then starts

After updating to lollipop the music app would play for a few minutes then stops for a few seconds then play again, did not have issue with kitkat. Help please.

It's back!!!!!! The problem went away for a few days now same issue. It only happens when I am listening to sound files on the headphones - sudden pause then restart in the middle of playing the sound file, this happens with different music/podcase apps. No issue with bluetooth streaming or speaker phone. So it appears there is a software bug with Lollipop update - never had this problem with KitKat. Factory reset does not fix it. I wish there was a way to revert the phone back to KitKat. Hoping the new Lollipop update would fix this.

  • Improve gtk apps startup time.

    Hi,
I wanted to do a little survery, on whether the "problem" that I have is specific to my computer, or this is how things should be.
Starting a gtk app (like gedit or rox) takes about 1-2 seconds on my system. I know for some people this is not much, but when I work I don't want to wait 2 seconds for app like gedit to start. It is not a matter of wasting time, rather a matter of changing focus. If I press win+r I would like to have rox to be open instantly, so I don't start to think about something else.
I know this is possible, as running uzbl is really fast. It seems like starting in the moment of issuing the command. I know it doesn't use lot of gtk, only some glib.
    So in summary:
Do you think such situation is normal? Anyon knows how to decrease the delay?
    Thanks,
    Matt

flamelab wrote:Gedit is bloated ? Since when ?
I'm talking more the libraries/start up here then general usage.
What are you running them on? A *box, GNOME, KDE? I've always felt that gtk apps on KDE (for example) take a little longer. More my opinion than anything else. Which is understandable, considering the QT bias. Mostly, though, I'd say it comes down to the app. For maximum speed you want something that's small and uses very few (or always loaded) libraries.
NOTE: Gtk apps seem to start faster on my awesome setup than with GNOME. Do any of the GNOME processes (like gnome-settings-daemon) increase the load time? I feel as if they might.
    EDIT: Yes, gVim is gtk.
ANOTHER EDIT: If you want a very fast, light, text editor then try mousepad.

  • Only GTK apps can print, any other app (including lp) appears "held"

The jobs are "held", have 0k size, and when I release them, they disappear. I'm using cups-usblp (as otherwise my Epson printer isn't detected) and gutenprint drivers.
The relevant log lines (log level warn, and I just looked for anything suspicious) should be:
    E [27/Mar/2012:19:03:58 +0200] cupsdReadClient: 16 IPP Read Error!
This is when I submit the job with a non-gtk app.

This appears when I "release" the job in the HTTP interface.
With GTK apps (such as evince or firefox), everything works flawlessly.
    Does anybody have any ideas?

Im currently having the same problem with my Epson. I only noticed it yesterday and have not found a workaround myself.

  • X apps (especially gtk apps) "freeze" while fluxbox keeps working

    HI Everyone,
I'm trying to understand if this issue Ive been experienceing for the last several weeks (months?) is related to the "redrawing" and "freezing" issues I've been reading about with KDE.
What I experience is the gui application failing to redraw. The window "freezes", i.e. stops updating. If I switch desktops, and then switch back, whatever was drawn on the other desktop is still showing inside the window outline of the "frozen" app. The window decorations render correctly and the WM in general continues to function.
Firefox and thunderbird seem particularly vulnerable to this syndrome. I've also seen Transmission and gVim be affected. In short gtk apps seem to be mostly what are freezing.
I also typically run quite a few xterms. These will generally not exhibit the graphical redraw problem, but it seems this issue is getting worse, because I'm now seeing xterm commands failing to complete because of what seems to be saturated CPUs. In general I'm able to bring an xterm to the forground over a "frozen" app and it will still function.
I will often keep xosview open. When this freeze-up occurrs, xosview will still be running and indicating that 1 or 2 of the quad-core2 are pegged at 100%.
    The config n brief:
quad-core2 x86_64 intel motherboard w/ 8G RAM and Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics
    kernel26 2.6.35.4-1
    xorg-server 1.8.1.902-1
    fluxbox 1.1.1-1 (therefore no compiz)
I sometimes seem to hear intense disk activity, and a sync command will delay in completing during these events.
I run mdadm RAID1 mirror on all partitions, including swap. Additionally I recently added a second pair of drives that are mirrored, formated ext4, and mounted as /home, all other filesystems are ext3.
Is anyone else running fluxbox, or other WMs besides KDE, seeing these types of X app freeze-up?
Are those having issues in KDE experiencing these same kind of graphic rendering delays? That is, do some apps freeze while other apps and the WM continue to function? Are the freezes associated with GTK apps?
Thank You! for any confirmation, or denial, that this has anything to do with the KDE freeze-ups, or any illuminating info you are able to provide...

Well, it's getting worse and worse.
I've pacman-Syu several times in hopes some update would fix things, but instead it just gets worse.

The top task in htop was the running audio player, consuming at around 2%.
I've never seen a filesystem looking module at the top of top.

Is there some way to get further insight into what is happening in the filesystem?

  • Problems with ligatures in firefox, gtk-apps

I have trouble with ligatures such as fl and fi in firefox and some different gtk-apps(pidgin for example). The problem is that the ligatures are rendered at a slightly different size and weight for some fonts.
I use libxft-lcd and freetype2-lcd. I don't really care for ligatures for on screen display, just a way to disable them altogether would work just fine.

I believe multicast means you are sending with a 255 address, like 198.162.10.255. Most routers will block multicasts, probably because multicasts cause a lot of traffic. (And of course multicasts will not work over the internet.)
UDP can send multicast or to a specific IP.
There is no problem with using more than one port.
If you listen on a UDP port then you get everything that fits in the buffer. So as long as packets aren't being dropped then you are getting everything.

  • [SOLVED] Bug with GTK apps - Icons didn't render correctly

    Hello.
I had been experiencing a strange behaviour of GTK apps at one of my arch systems lately - Icons didn't render correctly (screens attached).
It was not critical for work but frustrating enough. Especially in firefox (notice the half-rendered formulas).
It took me quite some time to figure out that this behaviour was caused by a line
    "Xft.rgba:1 "
in my .Xdefaults config. After I commented it out the bug disappeared.
Qt apps were not affected by this.
Besides, on my second arch system it didn't cause any trouble.
So, I'm not sure whether it is a bug or not.
If it is, I'm not sure whether the problem is on my side, in package or upstream.
I've decided to post it just in case somebody experience something similar.
    Libs versions are:
    gtk2 2.24.22-1
    gtk3 3.10.6-1
    gtkmm 2.24.4-1
    gtkmm3 3.10.0-1
The bug was also present in:
    gtk2 2.24.20-1
    gtk3 3.8.2-1
    gtkmm 2.24.4-1
    gtkmm3 3.8.1-1

Thanks for the replies guys! For the record it's when I click a window in say lxterminal or pidgin it opens in firefox. I'll take a look through the links you posted and see if I can get it working!

  • [Tut] Smooth KDE4 + FF3 (and other GTK apps) integration (Oxygen!)

This is a very simple tutorial, but this problem stumped me for a little (finding gtk-kde4-oxygen-theme), so I thought it might help others. Most normal KDE4 +GTK guides tell you to use  gtk-qt-engine by itself, which some stubborn apps (Firefox especially) don't play nice with. Most Firefox guides tell you to install QtCurve, which is nice, but not nearly as nice as Oxygen IMO, especially since even KDE apps will change to QtCurve.
I used KDEmod, but normal KDE should work too.
1.) Get the KFirefox theme here: http://ramonantonio.net/kde-firefox/ This will change the main look of Firefox. to integrate well.
2.) Get gtk-qt-engine, and install. This will let you set a KDE style for GTK apps. Unfortunately, "Use my KDE style in GTK applications" does not work in some stubborn apps, like Firefox, and you're normally forced to "Use another style" that's not as nice as your main KDE4.
3.) Get gtk-kde4-oxygen-theme from the AUR, and install. This is one of those "other styles", but it's very Oxygen-like.
4.) Go to the KDE System Settings, Appearance, and GTK Styles and Fonts. Select "Use another style", and then 'kde4-oxygen'.
Done! You may need to restart Firefox and/or KDE. Enjoy =]

Hello I'm the creator of the theme. Could you provide more information and test latest version?
Sure.  I am using Minefield 3.0 and I just loaded your theme and it seems to work fine. Looks like you got whatever was causing the problem to work properly.

  • Memory died, replaced but now can't print with apple apps

User installable memory died, kernel failures, finally froze, replaced, all better but had to use Diskwarrior to clean up mess on hard drive. Now everything works BUT I can't print from Apple apps. MSOffice updated and prints, Safari, appleworks etc. don't all crash when printing. Cleaned out Printing PPD's, printer defs in Library, reinstalled printers from scratch, disk repair, etc. Even rezapped PRAM again. No luck.
Seems like this is tied to an apple OS function I haven't found yet.
Anybody got any ideas before I reinstall the OS?
    thanks

    Thanks Greg,
Well, bottom line, had to nuke the HD and reinstall the entire system. Everything is fine. Seems the archive and install couldn't deal with the degree of disk confusion caused from the declining memory prior to failure.
    thanks

    Hi @EslamHassan
Welcome to the HP Support Forums. I gather that you have a question regarding the HP All-in-One Printer Remote app.
The LaserJet M127fw printer is not a supported printer for the HP AiO app. I have included the HP Printers and Supported Mobile Printing Solutions document for reference.

  • Major Printing Problem - Can't Print in any App, with Any Printers

I help my Aunt with her three Macs (2 eMacs, 1 MacBook, all running 10.4.8 right now) at her office, and she had me come to help recently because one of the eMacs stopped printing anything; here's what happens:
In every app besides Word (e.g. Safari, TextEdit, AppleWorks, etc.): If I click File>Print... or press 'Command-P,' the cursor turns into the spinning rainbow for a few seconds, and nothing happens (meaning I can do anything I want in the application, as if nothing at all happened).
In Word: If I click File>Print... or press 'Command-P,' Word sits for a minute with the spinning rainbow, then locks up and quits itself. BUT, if I click the little 'print' button in the toolbar (the one that bypasses the print dialog box), the file will print.
I tried resetting the printing system, setting up different printers on the computer, printing over the network and over USB (directly connected to port 1 on the eMac), and re-downloading/installing the printer drivers for the Brother 5250DN laser printer AND the HP LaserJet 1200 laser printer, but all to no avail.
I can run the Printer Setup Utility and recognize the printers (via Bonjour over the network and via USB), and the computer can run the printer setup utilities, so I know the printer communicates fine with the computer. I also can print to the printers (both the networked one and the Brother) from any of the other Macs (including my own laptop) over the network. But I can't get the print dialog box to show up for any printer on the one eMac.
I'm determined that this problem lies within the OSX printing system, but reinstalling the whole OS is not an option, as I would have to re-setup all the software, user accounts, special network settings, etc. (even if I do an Archive and Install). Is there anything I can do??? (I seem to recall someone else having this problem, but I can't find that thread on the forum).

There's another thread describing this same problem. I am having the issue too. As I posted in the other thread:
"Well, I did a full Archive and Install, with restore user settings, and the thing still won't print! All apps crash when trying to print (except Mail.app, which is odd). So it appears all of the files required for printing are there since Mail.app works, but I still can't print from Safari, Firefox, Preview, TextEdit, etc etc. ARGH!!!!
Next step is to downgrade to 10.4.8."
If that doesn't work, I guess an Erase and Install would be th next step.
