Printing using a printer connected to a router - IP Printing

Greetings:
I am trying to assist a friend of mine with a technical problem. Let me first describe the environment:
- US Robotics MaxG router with wireless network and USB port to plug a printer.
- MacBook Pro with Tiger 10.4.11
- Canon MP210 printer.
Some basics:
- Printer works fine if attached to USB.
- Connectivity between MacBook and router is fine - in facts no problems to surf the Internet.
Problem:
We connected the Canon printer to the USB port on the router. The router configuration software indicated us the printer address: http://192.168.1.1:1631/printer/canon, it also indicates the printer is ready.
On Tiger we used the IP printing to configure. The problem is that there is no clean mention on how to write the address, we tried this:
- 192.168.1.1:1631
- 192.168.1.1
Once entered, the printer is all the time off-line - no communication with it.
To further complicate the things, the MP210 driver is never listed in the pulldown menu for available printers, despite the printer package has been installed.
Did anyone come across this problem before?
Best regards
Claudio

The issue you are having is partly a driver issue. You must use a CUPS driver to use the standard CUPS network protocols in OS X. I think Canon released a CUPS driver in December for the MP210 - do you have that?
Then, about the address. USRobotics uses a non-standard port for the IPP protocol. Usually it's :631, but you'll notice that it's :1631 for USR. To do that in OS X, you need the "Advanced" protocol selections. In Printer Setup (10.4), click Add, then hold down the Option key and click More Printers. At the bottom of the first menu you will find the new item Advanced. Select that. Then in the second menu, you will find Internet Printing Protocol using http (or IPP - on OS X these are identical). Enter the URI:
http://192.168.1.1:1631/printers/canon -- in this case canon is the queue name.

  • Printer won't stay connected via wired router

I have a Deskjet 1512 all-in-one and I'm having some problems getting it to work.  I have Windows 8.1 and I'm connecting the printer through a linksys router via USB.  The USB Control Center that I downloaded from linksys shows that the printer is connected, but it keeps connecting, then losing connection and I can't figure out how to keep it connected.  So far I haven't even been able to print anything.
Any and all help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi @Blends412,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see that your HP Deskjet 1512 printer will not stay connected via wired router. I am happy to help!
According to your printer's specifications, and user guide, this printer only supports a direct USB cable connection, from the printer to the computer. You will need a USB 2.0 printer cable. The cable looks like this.
Please see this guide, Setting Up the Printer Hardware for HP Deskjet 1510 and 2540 and HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 1510 and 2..., on how to setup the printer.
Hope this resolves your issue, and thank you for posting!

  • Printer will no longer connect to wireless router.

My printer won't connect to my router.....I disconnected a Vonage phone from my router, never touched the printer, but since disconnecting the phone, the printer no longer works....I've shut my cable box, router, computer and printer down and re-connected in that order....I've attempted multiple times to connect to the WPS from the printer both by pushbutton and PIN....and I've been unable to find anything on line to help with troubleshooting...any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

    Hi @MKhelp
Thank you for reaching out to the HP Forums, I'd be happy to help you work towards getting your 3054 back online.
I can help you put the printer on your wireless network without software. I use this method for iPads, iPhones and other devices that do not have software.
Restore the network defaults on the printer by pushing the wireless button, going to settings, and then restore defaults. The wireless button should then start flashing, this means it is now in autowireless mode.
Connect to the network that the printer is broadcasting. It is usually HP-setup-3054 and then part of the MAC address. The wireless light will still be flashing on the printer at this point, this is normal since this is not an actual adhoc connection.
Load up the Embedded Web Server (EWS) in the browser on your mobile device. The default IP for autowireless is 192.168.223.1.
Go to the network tab along the top of the EWS.
Click on Wireless Setup Wizard along the lefthand side to begin configuring the printer.
You have now completed the Wireless configuration, follow the next 3 steps to start printing.
The blue wireless light will go solid, put the Mac back on your own network.
Add the printer to the System Preferences.
    Print

  • Epson printer using airport express connect wired to PC

    Hi,
I have a problem with my epson printer C41 series.
It is connected using USB to Airport express then wired using ethernet cable to my existing router in order to share to 3 computer (2 PC, 1 PowerbookG4).
Firstly, I used bonjour to detect the printer, and it was working perfect unfortunately under my PowerbookG4. So I unplug the powerbook, just want to use airport as printer server. I ran bonjour again, it detect the printer under my airport, but it doesn't work when printing.
Perhaps you could help my problem.
    Thanks in advance.

I have a cable modem (Comcast) connected (WAN) to my
Airport Extreme Base Station. Question: Can I us an
AirPort Express to "join" this network (plug it in in
another room) and use the LAN port to connect an
Ethernet cable to a computer's Ethernet port?
If you "Join an Existing Wireless Network" the ethernet port on the AX is DISABLED. If you set up a WDS network using the AX to extend the range of your AEBS, the ethernet port will be ENABLED.
    Will
the AE LAN port have a local IP address ( i.e.
10.0.1.5) available for a wired Laptop to connect to
the internet (or even attach a non-wireless internet
    web camera)?
Properly configured as a WDS network, the device connected to the AX ethernet port will pull an IP address from the AEBS, just like any other connected device. You can also configure this connected device with a static IP address, outside the range of the dynamic DHCP addresses.
I hope this is not too basic......

  • Error code 0XB80ACAA8 on my printer, when trying to connect to my router

Dear Support, I bought the printer 2 weeks ago. It worked perfectly, but since today I get the error code 0XB80ACAA8 when I try to connect to the Router. Can you tell me where the code stands for and what to do in order to resolve this?

Hello,  Please try the below steps. remove the cartridges.Unplug the power cord from back of the pritner.power Off the wireless router.Wait for 60 seconds.plug in the power cord to the printer only.install cartridges when prompted. If issue still exits, its time to replace the printer. Now power on the wireless router. If issue still exists, then check if there is a firmware update for the router. Also change the router settings Channel = 11,  mode= B/g.  Frequency = 2.4 GHzIf issue still persists, then its time to replace the printer. Please call HP Tech Support for further assistance.

  • HP 7510 AIO printer won't stay connected - Wired workstation, wireless printer

Hi!  I spoke (and checked solution button) too soon. The printer still "disappears" from the Wired XP network workstation. The only difference since applying the solution given is that the disconnects are now happening about every 12 hours, vs every couple of hours.
Ink notification is set to "only when I print"
Static IP is set for all machines
HNDU works -- when the printer is visible but will hang the workstation if printer is not visible.
    Original comments follow below;
HP 7510 wireless printer disappears -- 4 station XP wireless network, w/ 1 PC hardwired.
    Options

    Printer: HP 7510
Network:  multi-station wireless, thru DLink DI-632 (one PC hardwired to router)
Address Config:   Printer is using static IP -- outside of DCHP range (192.168.15.240)
Printer Config: Each computer has static IP set into the control panel app, using IP addressing.
Operating System:  XP (Service Pack 3)
Other devices:  Ipad, Xoom and Kindle Fire (all working using ePrint)
Network Security Protocol: WEP (we're out in the country)
Network Setup:  Main router, along with 2 access ports (hardwired); currently using channels 1, 5 and 11 (again, we're in the country and have little competition for channels)
File Sharing: All machines in network have one open "share" drive, accessable with passwork.
Scenario:  Wireless computers appear to stay connected for several days to a week at a time. (We reboot weekly, just as a SOP)
Computer that is wired to the network loses communication with the printer a couple of times a day and needs to be rebooted in order to restore connection.
When this happens, other machines continue to print and scan, with no problems, and the wired machine continues to have its name displayed in the SCANNING panel on the printer -- but the printer won't talk to it.   All network functions, including internet and intranet access to the printer's EWS is still available.  I have noticed that if I go into check ink levels, though, that the ink check software behaves differently.
Normally in the ink status app, there is a small "working" icon with 6 dots. When this computer is connected properly, it will start jumping around the circle, showing activitiy, get to 41%, and then display the ink status info.  When the printer/computer connection is not working, the "working" icon will go to just a couple of percent then jump to the printer information page, showing make, model, serial number, firmware level etc.
In every instance so far, rebooting (with no other action) brings the printer/computer connection back to life -- until next time.  I am trying to find any other pattern for this behavior, just can't identify it yet.
I started out with the plain vanilla installation, but then every computer in the network would consistently drop connections, about every 45 minutes. Using the info on this forum, I've eliminated the drop-outs for those printers, and got to the Static IP solutions (we've done that anyway for years with net-ready machines).  This is the last machine that "drops off"  It appears that some piece of HP-required software is "dropping out" or getting clobbered, but I cannot see a pattern, even checking and noting the various software used locally on the machine, and the various websites visited. So far, no pattern.
I am hoping that an HP guru with access to the source for the "ink supply" status software can take a look at what is happening and why it will always go to 41% and then display ink status (when connected) and then only go a couple of percent and display the ink status (when it isn't connected).
    Thanks, in advance,
    jim

    More info:
In last paragraph, above, the request for "ink status" is returned with a static display of the printer firmware version, driver version, step level, MAC# etc of the printer, not "ink status" when the printer is disconnected.
Also, when printer is disconnected the HP home networking utility will hang the system -- a hard reboot is required, which restores the printer, until the next time it goes "into the woods".  Signal stregth, measured on the printer, is 4 bars (very good).

Thanks!  That appears to solve the problem.  After your suggestion, I remembered that I set the "ink level warning" on this machine ONLY to "Always warn me", as opposed to "tell me only when I am printing".  That seemed to be the problem. Only the computer that was set to "always warn on low ink-levels" was disconnecting -- the others worked fine! Now, all are working fine.
Just to be safe, though, I've also turned off the "scan from printer to computer" function on each computer. That was set for each machine, and seemed to work fine. The other machines in the network did not disconnect, and the printer was tracked whether each computer was on or off.   May try to turn it on later; I'll see if the family uses that feature very often!
    Thank you for your help.

I spoke too soon!  After about 26 hours, the printer connection on the one "hard-wired" CPU dropped, which is better than before, but still not solid.  Same exact symptoms as before. Only piece of the puzzle that was different this time is about 50 pages were scanned, some to this computer.  Used the "Scan requested from CPU" process, rather than enabling the "Scan TO Cpu" function in the software app.  It did not drop the connection immediately after -- about 1 hour to 1.5 hours afterwards.  Suspect this is a coincidence, not a cause of the problem with this machine.
I also scanned (same approach) from one other CPU on the network -- that wifi connection is still rock-solid.

    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I think it is fixed now.....the problem seems to reside in the module that will notify you immediately if ink is low (vs notify me only when printing).  If, when initially installed, the user selects "immediately", then the printer will randomly disappear. (More on "re-finding it" later.)
Also, it is difficult to change the ink notification setting, because it appears not to be "sticky", but will sometimes, flip. (I've not figured this out yet).  As long as the setting for "low ink notification" is on "only when printing", life is good.
If the printer does disappear, go over to the Advanced tab when the printer software/firmware page comes up, instead of the current ink levels.  Reset the selection about "tell me about ink notification" to "only when printing", and then toggle the "autoshut off" from "NEVER" to "2 hours" and then, finally, back to "NEVER".  Then, lastly, press closed on the panel.  Printer should be connected again. To test, go to the Photosmart 7510 app again, and select "Show estimated ink levels".  The counter will start at 1%, jump to 41% and then bounce around until it displays the ink level.
FOR HP TECH:  Please consider making the "ink level notification" persistent in the registry OR provide a de-install tool that will completely clean all traces of the prior installation of the 7510 driver / app in the registry, so that a new install may have this setting saved correctly.
Hope this helps some of you -- it's an excellent printer once its running!

I have an Airport Extreme, 2 laptops with windows 7 and a wireless HP printer.  I am not able to connect the laptops to the printer.  Any advise?

The problem is not the router.. the issue is the vpn has put your computer in a different IP range with a different gateway. When you turn off the vpn the computer returns to local lan and can print.
Some vpn software allows you to set gateway to use local net instead of remote gateway or access to other webistes or local lan.
    Read up the issue.
    http://stevejenkins.com/blog/2010/01/using-the-local-default-gateway-with-a-wind ows-vpn-connection/
    Cisco vpn client..
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/239113
I did not search much.. just grabbed the first article I could find that explains the issue.
The whole point of the vpn is whilst it is connected your computer is NOT part of the Local Lan .. it is part of the Remote LAN via the vpn tunnel.
It is also a security risk using split tunnelling so often it will not be allowed.
Plug the printer directly into the computer via usb or whatever.. Local connection will work.. not local lan.

My printer has started using the Photo black cartridge a lot more than it used to.  I think it is using the Photo Black even when there are no images on the document.  I have had the printer for about 4 1/2 years, and it just started doing this in the past six months.  I used to only replace that cartridge about every 6 months.  Now I have to replace it about every 2 months even though I am not printing images.  I replaced the photo cartridge 3 days ago, and it is down about a third, and I have printed no images.  I saw something in one of the responses that talked about changing preferences in the Advanced tab of my printer, but the only option I see there for printing is Automatic.  I would appreciate any help I can get before my printer sucks up my bank account!

Hi @smithloi , and welcome to the HP Forums!
I see you're experiencing cartridge issues.  I would like to help!
I'd recommend removing the cartridges, and performing a power reset.  Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I'd then suggest running the following updates:
    Critical Update
    HP Update Software Utility
    HP Print Software Patch

  • Problems connecting my iMac to a Netgear router USB printer

    Hi,
First time for this sort of thing... here goes...
I have an iMac and a Macbook Pro connected to a Netgear wireless router. The router has a HP Color Laserjet 1600 connected to it via USB.
I knew that the HP 1600 was not initially compatible with Macs but wanted to see if I could save throwing it away, and found the open source CUPS driver and associated files here: http://macosx.com/forums/hardware-peripherals/302806-hp-lazer-1600-printer-drive r-mac.html
Installation of the drivers went fine.
Then I went to system preferences > Print & Fax > + and added the printer with the following settings:
    Protocol: LPD
Address: 192.168.0.1 (the netgear router IP address)
Print Using: HP Color Laserjet Foomatic/foo2hp (recommended)
The printer seemed to be discovered successfully. However when I attempt to send a document to the printer it returns the message:
"Attempting to connect to host 192.168.0.1 for printer
Network host '192.168.0.1' is busy; will retry in 30 seconds..."
    - and hangs there indefinitely.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Check the documentation for the Netgear router. Since you are using LPD, there is most likely a specific queue name you need to enter to access the USB port. This would explain the error, as you are connecting to the print server (router) but the spool file cannot find its way to the correct port, hence the busy message.
