Printing using Leppard and Windows XP

I have an Epson R280 connected to my iMac through a usb hub. I want to print from my Windows XP PC and Laptop through airport. When I was running Tiger I was able to do using an Epson R320, but sometimes the IP address would change and I would to go in and sent it up again.
I spent many hours yesterday trying to get it connected, no luck.
What is the diffence in the Airport in my iMac and Airport Extreme or Express?
Please help.

It sounds to me like your ISP only allows one PC per internet connection. This can easily be solved by spoofing the MAC address of your Windows XP on your router. So to the ISP your router looks like a PC, and the only PC on the network. I can't be certain that this is your issue as your across the pond.
You should contact the place you purcahsed your MacBook, or call Apple - I am sure they would be more than happy to send you a Hardware Test CD.
Good Luck!

Setting up a small business network using mac and windows??

Ok that sounds great. What is your actual question as it relates to AirPort networking? Is it: Can I set up a wired/wireless network with an AirPort base station that support multiple Mac & PC clients? If so the answer is yes.
If, instead, it is how to I configure an AirPort network to support a small business you will have to provide more details on both your networking & computing equipment in order for any of us to help you.

Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant do not restore MS Windows, it only does the OS X partition. All of your Windows stuff must be backed up and restore using a MS Windows application. If no one on this forum is able to answer your question then I'd repost it on a Parallels forum to see how other Windows users approach this.

  • Trouble printing with my HP Deskjet printer using CUPS and hplip

tl;dr This 1,646 word post describes my frustration with CUPS and hplip. I cannot get my HP Deskjet F4400 set up with CUPS, and all the solutions I've tried don't work.
I'm running Arch Linux ARM on my Seagate DockStar, a small ARM-based "plug computer" that I use as a home server. My printer is the HP Deskjet F4480, which is part of the HP Deskjet F4400 series.
I previously had CUPS set up to share my printer with my home network, using hplip for the printer driver. I never upgraded CUPS or hplip because those versions worked fine, and I didn't want to break anything avoid breaking anything. The versions that I was using had to have been at least one to two years old.
Everything was working very smoothly... until a few days ago. The drive I was running Arch Linux ARM on became corrupt, so I had to install a fresh copy of the operating system. That meant losing all of the working versions and configuration files each application I had installed, including CUPS. I thought I had a backup image of the drive, but it didn't work when I tried to restore it. (Yes, it was stupid of me not to test my backup.)
Setting up CUPS was one of the first things that I wanted to do after reinstalling, since my family depends on the network printing functionality almost daily. Unfortunately, I could not get CUPS to work with my printer correctly. It wouldn't be able to display a list of drivers, HP's setup utility encountered an error adding it, and it threw various errors when I tried to print test pages. I ended up reading hundreds of forum posts, wiki articles, and CUPS/hplip tutorials to try to figure out how to properly set it up. I ended up spending a total of nearly ten hours trying to get the printer to print with CUPS, and it's still not working after all that work.
I'm going to explain in this post some of the many things that I've tried so far. I just removed all of the printing packages from my system and any extra files that were left behind. I'm now going to be installing all of the packages again and documenting everything that I have been trying to do to get it to work. I'll try to include exact error messages and logs where necessary.
    1. I first found this article on the Arch Linux ARM website on how to set up a CUPS printer. I didn't really want to use webmin, but I did it anyway so that I could follow the guide. I installed all the packages mentioned except for cups-pdf, since I didn't need print to PDF support. Everything installed smoothly, and I configured CUPS and webmin to allow access to other computers on the network. I started to notice problems in the instructions - /etc/rc.d/cups was actually /etc/rc.d/cupsd, /etc/printers.conf was actually /etc/cups/printers.conf, and webmin didn't actually add anything to the printers.conf file. I uninstalled webmin at this point because I didn't need it, and I decided I wasn't going to follow that guide with incorrect information.
    2. I then tried to set up the printer on my own using the CUPS web interface listening on port 631. I clicked the Add Printer button and it switched me to the HTTPS web interface. I then logged into the root account and was presented with the list of printers. My printer was listed as "HP Deskjet F4400 series (HP Deskjet F4400 series)", so I selected it and continued. I saw a list of printer models (PPD files) ending in CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.9. There was no entry for my printer, so I tried the "HP DeskJet Series (en)" one. I set the default options and chose Maintenaince->Print test page. I then got a ridiculously simple error: "Unable to print test page: No such file or directory". How do I even know what file or directory it's referencing? I read online that it may be because I'm not in the lp group, but root is indeed in there. I saw in the error log "Avahi client failed: -26". I started dbus and avahi-daemon just in case, but I still got that silly error. I restarted cups and the same error message occured.
    3. I researched online that pretty much the only way for my printer to have a driver would be to install hplip. Before installing hplip, I uninstalled CUPS, leaving cupsd.conf but deleting printers.conf. Then I installed CUPS and hplip together, with hplip requiring foomatic-db, foomatic-db-engine, and foomatic-filters. Everything seemed to install correctly. I started CUPS again and then ran hp-setup -i to try to install my printer. I selected USB and it found my printer, hp:/usb/Deskjet_F4400_series?serial=[printer serial number here]. I entered a simple name and then was told that no PPD file was found for the printer but that I could specify one manually. There were none I could find online; everywhere it just said to install hplip. I used the find command to find "f4400" and finally found 2 compressed PPDs located at /usr/share/ppd/HP/hp-deskjet_f4400_series-hpijs.ppd.gz and /usr/share/ppd/HP/hp-deskjet_f4400_series.ppd.gz. I gunzipped both of them and pointed hpsetup to the hpijs one, knowing that I was using the hpijs one when it was working before. It told me "Description for the file: HP Deskjet f4400 Series hpijs, 3.12.6". Hooray! I selected to use it, but then setup failed: "error: Printer queue setup failed. Please restart CUPS and try again." Ugh!
    4. I restarted CUPS and went into the hp-setup process again. It gave me the same printer queue setup failed error. I don't know if these entries in the CUPS error log are related or not, but these errors relating to foomatic showed up. I restarted CUPS again and this time used the non-hpijs file with hp-setup. This one was called "Description for the file: HP Deskjet f4400 Series, hpcups 3.12.6". It failed again with the same error and the same entries in the error log. I found lots of posts online about this error, but none seemed to have a solution that would work for me. Now I tried running hp-setup in debug mode with -g. Here is what it said before the error. I then tried to Google "debug: addPrinter() returned (0, Unable to connect to CUPS server)". I saw on an Arch bug report to install dbus-python and python2-gobject, as well as create a symlink for /usr/bin/python2 to /usr/bin/python. It didn't work - same error.
    5. I then tried to add the printer to CUPS via its web interface. Now there were two listed,  HP Deskjet F4400 series (HP Deskjet F4400 series) and HP Deskjet F4400 series USB [printer serial number here] HPLIP (HP Deskjet F4400 series). So, hplip added the second one. I tried both of them, but after clicking Continue the page started to hang. I got another stupid, undescriptive error. "Unable to get list of printer drivers: Success". I saw the same foomatic errors in the error log as before. I then started reading the ArchWiki page on CUPS, located here. I tried the blacklisting usblp. I tried changing the permissions on the device node, although this starts to become ridiculous that it is even required to do that. Nothing was working; the printer installation still didn't work with hp-setup or with CUPS. Then, I found what I was looking for: the exact error I had on the wiki page! It said for "Unable to get list of printer drivers" you should "Try to remove Foomatic drivers." WTF? Foomatic is required for hplip, and hplip is required for my printer. I can't do that. Forum posts say to try that or do the permissions or usblp thing. Nothing is working.
    6. I tried various other things to get it to work, even though I knew they probably wouldn't make it any different. I copied the PPDs from hplip to another folder and uninstalled hplip and foomatic. I then added them to /usr/share/cups/model and CUPS successfully found them and set up the printer. I reinstalled hplip and foomatic since they're needed for those PPDs to function, and I tried printing a test page. It failed. I tried using the CUPS web interface to modify the printer driver; nope, that wasn't going to happen: "Unable to get list of printer drivers: Success".
That concludes the list of some of the things that I have tried so far. I really want to get this printer working, but right now I am really fed up with CUPS and hplip. It's things like this that make me hesitant to recommend Linux to anyone else. So much manual configuration and tinkering the inner workings of things is required to do tasks that would be quite simple on Windows. For example, I can plug this printer into my Windows 7 machine right now, wait for the driver to automatically be installed and configured, and have a test page in my hands less than a minute after I first plugged in the USB cable. I can share the printer with any other Windows machine on the network by checking a single checkbox.
But back to my problem with getting the printer to work on my DockStar. I just uninstalled all of CUPS, hplip, and foomatic again and removed all of their files. I can walk through things to try that you guys post and then give you full logs of everything - just give me exactly what to do and install and the exact order to do it all in. I just don't know what to do at this point and am so frustrated with this that I'm about to give up.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this printer working? I know this was a very long post, but I just wanted to explain everything that I've tried and how nothing worked. I really hope that we can figure this out so that I'll be able to print, and maybe it'll solve a few other people's problems with their printers, too. Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for the help.

Had similar issue with my HP Deskjet F4500C All in one printer, here's what I did:
make sure these packages are installed or install them
    pacman -S cups cups-pdf hplip pyqt3 python2-pyqt
    pacman -S system-config-printer-gnome
    rc.d cups start
To add device and install hp driver:
    1. Run ‘hp-setup’ as root.
    2. Click ‘Show Advanced Options’ button and check-enable ‘Manual Discovery’.
    3. Enter IP address 192.168.59.63 in the ‘…device ID…’ entry and click ‘Next’ to install driver.
run system-config-printer as root, to add printer
    # system-config-printer
click “Add”, Select Device -> Network Printer -> input the IP address of the printer such as “192.168.1.3″, click “Find” -> “Process”
you should be ok from here, if not some further steps:
If you encounter the following error:
File “/usr/share/system-config-printer/newprinter.py”, line 1531, in getNetworkPrinterMakeModel
    debugprint (host + “: ” + args)
TypeError: cannot concatenate ‘str’ and ‘list’ objects
You should comment out the error line at 1531 of newprinter.py, and then continue to add the printer.
4). Finally, you can run hp-check to see what problems exists for the printer.

  • Can send but not retrieve emails using Thunderbird and Windows 8.1

Hi, I am not able to get Thunderbird to retrieve emails on a new laptop.
Last week I purchased a new laptop due to an imminent hard disk failure on my old laptop. I will call them "Old" and "New" laptops. (Old laptop is still working for the moment...)
The Old laptop is nearly 3 years old, and I have been using Thunderbird on it since new without any problems.
I have downloaded and installed Thunderbird on the New laptop, and can not get it to retrieve emails.
As the Old laptop is still working (at the moment), I am able to directly visually compare and check settings on both computers.
    THE PROBLEM
Using Thunderbird on the New laptop, I am able to send emails, I can see all my old emails restored from the Old laptop using Mozbackup, but clicking Get Mail on the New laptop does not retrieve new
    emails.
When I click Get Mail, the status message in the bottom left corner says "connected to .....<ISP>..." but does not actually get the emails. However, the Old laptop is still able to get emails as it always has.
My ISP is a large Australian telco that I have used for many years and I have not changed anything with my account. The ISP is POP3.
    WHAT HAVE I TRIED
I deleted the email account created by restoring from Mozbackup, and attempted using the Thunderbird new account wizard, however Thunderbird did not recognise my ISP and would not create the account - even though it is working perfectly at the same time on the Old laptop.
All Firewalls I can find have been configured to allow Thunderbird, with the same configuration settings on both machines.
How do I know I can send but not Get emails from Thunderbird on the New laptop?
I have sent test emails to myself from the New laptop. Thunderbird sends successfully, I am able to preview the test emails via Mailwasher on the New laptop, and can read, reply, etc, to the emails if I log into my ISP webmail service. However I can NOT get Thunderbird to retrieve and download these emails on the New laptop. If I go to the Old laptop, Thunderbird works perfectly, retrieves and downloads all new emails, including these test emails.
I am now at the point where I do not know what else to try and would appreciate any suggestions.....
I have spent many hours over the last 3 days surfing the net, forums, Mozilla Support, etc, and tried everything suggested, without success. The only thing I have NOT tried is starting windows in Safe mode (as per some suggestions), as it is not a viable long term solution.
    OTHER INFO
    Computer Details;-
    "Old" laptop;-
Windows 7 Home Premium - continuously updated with all Critical and Important updates. 64 bit version.
Antivirus = Bitdefender Total Security (subscription and licensed). Up to date.
MailwasherPro 2012 (subscription and licensed). Up to date.
Thunderbird 24.5.0 working perfectly. Up to date.
    "New" laptop;-
Windows 8.1 - up to date with all Critical and Important updates. 64 bit version.
Antivirus = Bitdefender Total Security (subscription and licensed) - downloaded and installed. Up to date.
MailwasherPro 2012 (subscription and licensed) - downloaded and installed. Up to date.
Thunderbird 24.5.0 - downloaded and installed.
Note: I 'downloaded and installed' the Windows 8.1 version of these programs to avoid any potential compatibility problems restoring or copying from a Windows 7 backup version of the programs.
    1) New laptop came with pre-installed with McAfee - which has been Uninstalled due to running Bitdefender (Windows searches for 'McAfee' return nothing found suggesting the Uninstall was successful).
    2) Thunderbird has been added to both Bitdefender and Windows 8.1 firewalls on the New laptop.
    3) Bitdefender and Windows security settings are identical on both laptops - as near as I can determine, I may be missing something - but have checked all settings 3 times by doing a side-by-side visual comparison.
    4) Thunderbird settings are also identical and I am using the same email address and ISP that I have been using for many years.
    5) I migrated Thunderbird settings, accounts and emails from the Old laptop to the New laptop using Mozbackup, then visually checked and compared all settings in Thunderbird between the two machines.
    6) For info, I have used Mailwasher for many years as a simple way to preview and wash mail before running email programs such as Thunderbird - might be overkill, but I have also never had a virus or malware problem, so will keep doing this.
    7) I have Uninstalled and re-installed Thunderbird on the New laptop twice, and done the same with Bitdefender once.
    8) Any config changes I try on the New laptop, I either restart Thunderbird and / or restart the New laptop, or both.
    9) I have not created a Windows 8.1 account and am not using SkyDrive.
    10) Only other software I have installed on the New laptop is Google Chrome, Office Home 2013 and iTunes - all are working.
    Thanks in advance....

Well there is not much left. If telnet works then the path is clear and there is no hardware firewall blocking ports.
All that is left is software, so try windows safe mode with networking. A very handy way to eliminate software. it also actually disables most anti virus resident features and is preferred here because anti virus/security programs do not always disable or turn off when they say they have.
You might also try the McAfee removal tool. https://community.mcafee.com/thread/52788 I notice the rep said yes to both, they did not say not required.
Finally you could try creating a new profile, and see if it works just to exclude corruption of your existing profile. ( I doubt it but I am at the anything goes point)
Just as an aside, I have never had an email borne nasty and I for many years never even had an email virus scanner. So yes I think your a bit over cautious with mailwasher, if that is what your using it for. Thunderbird does not support scripting languages or flash, or most plugins in the email sandbox. The result is getting a virus from a mail in Thunderbird is really only possible, for all practical purposes, if you open that password protected zip from the young Russian woman and that is what the anti virus should be blocking anyway when the temp file is written.

  • How to print directly to printer using USB and Bluetooth from Java (J2ME) app.

I write mobile phone apps in Java (J2ME). I want to print directly to a printer via USB and via Bluetooth. I cannot use a print job with the Java available to me. Once upon a time you could just send text and print control characters to a printer. I would like to be able to do that again. Alternatively could you provide a 'skeleton' data stream into which I could insert my code to produce what is sent to the printer when a print job is used with Java on a laptop or PC. I just want to sent simple text with a little formatting.

    Hi,
As far as printing to devices not all devices support Bluetooth. Many devices support Bonjour protocal, IPP. The main print port is 9100. Additionally you can see what IO protocols are supported on a product by looking at the EWS (Embedded WebServer) there should be a networking page with that information.  Port 9100 is your basic print port and different devices will support different formats (PDF, JPEG, PCL5, PCL6). If there is an API you can find (i am not familiar with J2ME availible calls, then you can use those and send the data to port 9100. Again that is the basic path most printers will accept. not all devices support bonjour not all device support bluetooth etc... Hope that helps and good luck.

  • Sharing a Printer between XP and Windows 7 computers on a Wireless Network

Does anyone know if you can share a printer on a home network between a windows 7 and an XP SP3 computer?
I had a wireless netowork set up at home with an XP desktop hardwired to a cable modem and a printer with USB connection. I also had an XP laptop with wireless connection to the Internet. I was able to share files between the two compters and remotely connect to the printer (a recently purchased HP Photosmart C4600 series) from the laptop. Everything was fine until I had to replace the desktop.
I replaced the desktop with a laptop running windows 7.  The first problem I had was the new laptop would not connect to the Internet through the existing newtork - neither hardwired or wireless. The problem turned out to be my existing router so I replaced it and the new laptop now connects to the Internet. I set up a new network.
The problem I am having is remotely connecting to the printer with the XP laptop. I have the printer connected to the windows 7 laptop via USB (it is not a wireless printer) and have gone through and set both computers to the same workgroup, turned on file and printer sharing and have tried everything I have read on the microsoft forums including turning on UDP and TCP ports. I turned off firewalls and uninstalled CA security software to eliminate any potential unseen conflicts. I even tired connecting the printer to the XP thinking windows 7 might be "smarter" than XP and I could print remotely from the windows 7 computer. That didn't work either.
I can see the XP computer and access shared folders from the windows 7 computer and vice versa. If I physically connect the XP laptop to the printer via USB I can print so I know the drivers are OK.
The printer icon appears when I bring up the Printers and Faxes window on the XP computer and I am able to view the queue and even change options when I go into Properties. It shows it is selected as the default.
When I try to print remotely from the XP computer I get a message "Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current priter setup" - then it lists 3 thing s to try which I have done. I also went through the XP printer troubleshooter program which was a dead end.
    HELP!

If networking isn't working out for you, you may want to try out a swtich. Best Buy sells one by IOGEAR that allows for two USB connections to tie into one computer. So long as windows 7 can either download its own driver for the printer for basic features, or if you want to download canon's driver this solution will work. The only draw back is having to bring the laptop near the printer when you need to print.

  • Black & White printing using Acroread and Pasta

    Hi,
We have Acroread at the Unix server end and the printer is configured to "--PASTA Universal Printer Type".
Presently we are able to print the PDF output of the BI Publisher reports generated by Oracle concurrent programs but those are coming in Color mode.
Can anyone please advice how to get the output in the printer in Black and White mode.
    Thanks,
    Pranit.

I have a new Canon printer and find it is swallowing up the small black ink and not using the large black ink container. I tried printing in gray scale, but that also seems to use up the small black ink container. What settings should I use. e.g. Color Sync (Quartz filter, black and white or None???), Quality and Media (gray scale???), color options (color correction, None????) and any other thoughts???
    Thanks.

  • How do I get good quality prints using AE and an Epson SPR800 printer

I need to print best quality A4 colour prints for a friend.
My Macbook is connected wirelessly to the home network and prints documents usually on the Epson with no problems.
    My questions are:
    1. What settings should I use from Aperture to get the best quality print?
    2. Should I print from Photoshop CS3 or Elements 6 to give a better print and if so what settings should I select.
    3. I have read all about ICC profiles for the printer and paper and have downloaded the latest from the Epson web site and installed but are these being used when I print using the AE. I ask as I seem to remember in the past that to print over the network the settings on the Macbook were saying I had an an Apple Laserwriter P/S driver and not the Epson R800 driver.
    4. Would I be better to connect directly via USB to the Macbook?
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi, I am also interested in the answer to your question and likewise I am wading through lots of threads with no answers...
I did come across something that recommended importing straight from iDVD rather than using iMovie to send to iDVD ... something to do with it being encoded twice? Also people seem to think that iMovie HD creates higher quality mpegs compared to iMovie 8.
But would be good to find a definitive FAQ about all this. There is this site but it is out of date: http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/index.shtml.

    Hello @Emilio66,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you're experiencing issues when trying to print from Microsoft Office and Test Pages from your Windows 8.1 computer to your HP ENVY 4500 e-All-in-One Printer. However, you are able to print from all other programs from your computer to your printer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this printing issue.
Recently Microsoft has released a Hot Fix to correct 'Offline' or 'Partial Printing' issues within their latest Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 Operating Systems as they recognize this as an issue within their Operating System. The issue occurs when you have a networked printer and a corruption with the WSD (network) port on the Windows Operating System. This issue appears to affect a variety of networked makes and models of printers. Therefore, I am going to have you run the Hot Fix to correct the network printing issue. Please click here to install the Hot Fix. Once the website opens select the button for Hotfix Download Available. Please follow any onscreen prompts to install the fix. Once the fix is installed you should have no issues printing to your printer.
If the printing issue persists, can I please have you click here to download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool. This Tool will run on your computer and 'fix printing' issues for you. Should any driver, software, or connection conflicts be found than the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool will attempt to resolve those conflicts for you. Once the Tool has completed please test printing again.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you!

    Hello!
My home office is in a mixed environment, 1 iMac with Leopard 10.5.8, and the other iMac running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on bootcamp. Both computers are connected to the Airport Extreme (dual band version, firmware 7.4.2) via Ethernet. I attached the HP LaserJet P1006 to the Airport's usb port in order to share the printer to both platforms.
My problem is that, I got the printer installed on Win 7 by using bonjour print service v2.02 without any problem as it said works in both Ethernet and wireless, I sent a print test from win 7 successfully, then I did another test from leopard ( as I presumed it should works also), however, it says "the printer is in use". and wouldn't print. I tried restart the Airport Extreme and tried print from leopard again and that was fine but then Win 7 couldn't print.
Is there any solution for Mac + Win environment like my description? If I have 2 computers running on OS X they print perfectly well. Thanks all!
My solution for now is to physically plugging the printer to where I need to print from. I use Ethernet wired both computers is because I want to take the advantage of the gigabyte lan port for speedy files transfer between both computers.
