Pro Res and FCP X

Will encoding my clips to Pro Res and then importing them into FCP  X speed things up instead of importing the clips straight from my camera to FCP X?

Sorry, this is footage taken from a Canon 7D. 24fps 1920x1080. FCP gets bogged down sometimes. I have a dual quad core Mac Pro with 16 gigs of ram.
Thanks,
Shawn

  • Pro Res and FCP 5.1

I have pro res files, working in FCP 5.1.4 - importing files work but I have to render because prores files are not available in sequence settings.
I am learning it came out with version 6 but.... question is 'can I add prores codecs to fcp 5.1.4 and use them?'
Tried to drag codecs into easy setup folder, no go... any advice?
    Thanks

'can I add prores codecs to fcp 5.1.4 and use them?'
Not legally. They are only licensed with FCP 6. There is a decoder in QT 7.6, but the encoder and the ability to edit with them requires that you use FCP 6.

Gotta upgrade to FCP 6 or 7.

  • Apple Pro RES and DVD Studio Pro    for burning DVDS

I have a FCP file, shot in HD, 5.5 min long, in apple pro res. It needs to be in a format to send to various people to play on a commercial DVD player as well on apple and pc computers. So far I have made a H264, as well as a MPEG 2 on a "-" dvd and both will play only on my mac computer, not on a playstation 3, nor a pc, nor a commercial DVD player. What should I do?

so sorry I sounded curt....must be the heat.
I have zero experience. Someone was helping me compress my final cut pro movie which was apple pro res, then , in compressor we tried H.264, then MPEG 2, using "-", but neither of these would play on anything other than my mac.
I need them to be in a format that I can send to people who may be using a pc, mac or commericial DVD player.
It's very nice of you to reply....

  • Pro Tools and FCP

    Hi All
Anyone doing the roundtrip from FCP to Pro Tools and back again regularly? Is it as easy as an exported OMF to PT and then an exported final audio track in the desired format back to FCP to be synched with the video?
My organization is changing from Pyramix to PT, and the aforementioned workflow is what we have used with Pyramix, will that also work in PT?
    Cheers
    -j-

Unnecessary nowadays for ProTools. It was the best way to get your audio, with your levels and pans and keyframing, to ProTool prior to FCP 6. But FCP 6 and now 7 have a more robust OMF that includes those. Now it is more used for Avid to FCP, or FCP to After Effects, or FCP to Avid...stuff like that.
There still remains that 2GB file size limit...just FYI.

  • Pro Res and Intensity Pro Question

    Hello All!,
I currently traded in my Sony FX-1 for a Sony V1-U. Very happy with everything on it so far! My question is simple. I am about to undertake a project that is some basic 2 cam sit down green screen interviews. I will be purchasing the intensity pro to capture Pro Res 422 via HDMI from the V1U. My biggest concern is that I will not be able to re-capture if needed! I have read and am pretty sure I can set my camera to HDV downconvert and my device control to DV and capture preset Pro Res 422 and capture through the intensity pro.. My only question is will this allow me to log my footage then do a batch capture. Highly critical that I am able to re-capture the footage as this client seems to come back every couple of months and make changes and I don't like to keep footage on my drives. I also think it would be beneficial to have pro-res to help me with keying the green screen as HDV is 420 and Pro res is 422. Any suggestions? thanks so much in advance!

    Hello,
I have done just that sort of operation. I am using a Canon HV20 with HDMI out to
Intensity Pro. My camera allows for down convert, which I do not use, but I do connect
a firewire cable which then gives full log and capture. I am not a pro so my daily
experience is for my own needs.
I hope that gives you some help, others here might be able to offer more.

  • How to set up Final Cut Pro, Pro Res and H.264 project

Before I dive into this edit, I want to be sure it will all be compatible.  Here's what I have:
Pro Res HQ422 footag,  imported it into Final Cut Pro.  I also have H.264 footage imported into Final Cut Pro. Will it be possible to mix the H.264 footage on the ProRes timeline?  The ProRes footage was shot on a Canon 7d Mk II with an Atomos Ninja Star.  I have another batch of footage I'd like to use shot on a Canon 6d (full frame) that imports in as H.264.  This project will also use stills in the edit.
    Any suggestions or comments appreciated.
    thanks
    JR

Many of us will tell you it's no big deal to mix your media codecs. Your modern Macintosh can handle the job. Mostly.
Myself, I use workflows that carry over from ye olden days. I transcode everything to my planned release codec before beginning to edit and the timeline is the release medium's codec. In this case, I'd be moving everything to ProRes422 (not HQ) because you can't really gain anything by converting your DSLRs' MPEG4 to ProResHQ. I have really good reasons for this step but my reasons probably are not valid to anyone else.
Whatever advice you receive here, you must design and conduct some useful tests to determine if said advice is any good for your workflow and machine's specs. Know what your release medium is going to be; how high does the editing, rendering, and sharing quality need to be before you hit the ceiling?

  • When to use Pro Res and what else?

I recently went up to HD and have FCP7, all I've done is DV projects, which I transfer to iDVD. I've been reading a lot about Pro Res, up to now I used DV/DVPRO NTSC. I continue to use DV ftg and slowly am coming up to HD. Question is will Pro Res make a better dvd

    Hi
DVD is as standard (whatever program used - Toast™, DVD-Studio pro etc) ONLY SDef-Video and feeding it higher resolution forces it to down-scale and this is not done in a High quality way but here MORE IS NOT BETTER.

  • Pro res conversion FCP 4.5

Is it possible to convert H264 to pro res using Final cut pro 4.5 or any other software without having to buy the latest final cut? I also have OSX 10.4.8 so I couldnt install it if I wanted to.
    Any help?

Convert first. You don't want to edit with H.264: it's an acquisition/delivery format; not an editing format. It's a very CPU-intensive codec and will bog your system heavily, at some point.

  • Pro Certification and FCP 6

    Hi,
I'm thinking about taking the cerification test, but I'm wondering, when does the test switch over to FCP 6?
Also, does certification expire when new versions come out, or is it once certified, always certified?
Oh, also, I'm thinking about going for level 2. I know that knowing peachpit's 1st book is good for level 1, but aside from taking the class, can anyone give me an idea (book-based would be great) of where you need to be to take level 2? (I've taken begining and advanced classes at community college and been through book 1 and Adv. Color Correcting.)
    Thanks!

The Level 1 tests usually take about 3-4 months after the Level 1 Peachpit books are released to switch over. In the cases of the FCP 5 Level 2 & 3 exams (which were new) it took almost a year for them to move out of beta.
While your certification on the Apple Certified Pro page lists the version of FCP (or whatever) that you're certified for, the logos that you'll get (for business cards) will not. Those logos simply say "Apple Certified, Final Cut Pro, Level One." And, unless I'm mistaken, only FCP and DVDSP are labeled with 'Level One' since none of the others (Motion, Soundtrack Pro, Shake, etc) have Levels.
About Level 2 (or 3) - you must take a class at an Apple Authorized Training Center, so confirm if your community college is on the list. The training center proctor must enter the code for the center when you take the exam. (In case you're wondering, that same code is not needed for the Level 1 test).
As far as where you need to be for the Level 2 test, the book by Michael Wohl (or this one, for FCP 6) should be your bible - know it inside out - because the questions are directly from it (test questions are lifted, in some cases verbatim, from the end of each chapter). That said, you really should have serious experience with FCP to take Level 2. I'd imagine anyone who studies very hard can pass it, but it demands intimate knowledge of the application.
Also, tests of all Levels - and programs - tend to favor keyboard shortcuts, so if all you do is right-click all the time, work on memorizing what the corresponding keyboard shortcuts are, because they do ask that. Now, there are questions about how many different ways something can be done in FCP (or the software in question), but, surprisingly, there more questions simply asking things like "What is the keyboard shortcut for User Preferences?"

  • Why do I have to convert t2i files to pro res in fcp x? What difference does it make ?

    Hey Guys,
Just wondering why do I have to convert canon t2i files to prores in fcp x? What difference does it make ? I'm able to edit in fcpx the files that have just been imported diectly in. Does it cause any problems in export?
    Thanks so much,
    Jamie

I am not familiar with Canon files.
I assume that they are like AVCHD which are really designed only as a delivery format and not for editing.
Though they can be edited it is concidered better to convert them to ProRes 422 for editing.
Though nothing terrible will probably happen if you don't convert them, you are likely to get improved results and faster rendering of complex effects with the converted media.
The best thing is to do 2 very short (sub - 5 minute) identical test projects adding lots of effects etc. with both methods and then you will be able to determine which technique suits you.

  • Pro Res in Final cut express How do i get a good quality SD DVD

I recently bought final cut express and have suffered getting a good quality SD DVD out through the workflow from my cannon XHA1.
On screen its fine but when i author through imovie to DVD the quality is poor.
So reading the various threads it would seem that i need to use Pro res and the ingress codec... But cant find this option in express ?
Question is. Is pro res codec available in express and if not can someone suggest the optimum set up for HD capture to SD DVD output
    Many thanks

Use either of these techniques to get good quality DVDs from AIC.
    1. Edit your HDV/AIC in the timeline. Then create a new DV-PAL (NTSC) Anamorphic sequence. Copy your edited HDV/AIC to the new sequence. Do not alter anything. Render the sequence ..... this will take a long time - up to twice the length of the project. Then File>Export>QuickTime Movie (Not Self-contained).
However, if you use the QT Movie in iDVD you will get a squashed 4:3 movie, so first of all you must make QT stretch it out to its proper 16:9 dimensions like this:-
+a. Open the exported movie file in the QT Pro player.+
    +b. Go to Window>Show Movie Properties.+
+c. Select the "Video Track" and in the "Visual Settings" panel uncheck "Preserve Aspect Ratio".+
+d. In the "Scaled Size" box set the width to 1024 pixels for PAL.+
+e. The "Video Track" will have turned grey, so click it to make it blue again.+
+f. The opened movie file will jump to 16:9.+
+g. Close it with the red button and click Save.+
    2. This method is fast. Set your camera to "Locked DV" which means that FCE/FCP will capture it as anamorphic DV and edit it as standard definition anamorphic DV. (Use Easy Setup ... DV-PAL (NTSC) Anamorphic).
You can then Export>QuickTime Movie to be used in iDVD and use the stretching technique mentioned above.

  • Pro Res Plays Over Firewire?

I dropped a Sony EX-1 1080i clip onto a timeline, setup in FCP Easy Setup for DV-NTSC Firewire Basic. I changed the rendering to Pro res and rendered the timeline as usual. Looks great and plays fine over firewire to my Sony DVCAM deck.
It seems counter-intuitive that a Pro res rendered project would play over firewire. Could someone in-the-know explain how this works.
    Thanks!

I think you may be referring to the Render Control setting in user preferences. If you look at that setting, changing it to ProRes only works if the sequence is HDV, XDCamHD, or EX. You are working in a DV sequence so that setting is ignored.
Just because you have EX footage, doesn't mean it'll render in ProRes no matter what sequence you're working in. For it to render ProRes, you have to first be working in an EX sequence then apply some kind of effect or motion that requires rendering, and then when you render it'll render in ProRes.
The reason for this I believe (because I don't really work in those formats) has to do with the fact that HDV, XDCamHD, and EX are long GOP formats. Therefore any rendering probably takes longer in the native format than in ProRes. They probably include that setting to speed up the workflow for those using intraframe codecs.
If you place an HD clip in a DV sequence and render you end up with a DV clip. You've been seeing no difference from before because nothing has changed for you.
As for taking advantage of HD well, mastering to DV will at minimum, lose you half of your color information or as much as 75 percent. That can't be helped since DV is 4:1:1 color sub-sampling, and HD is 4:2:0 (HDV) and up. However, if you master to DVD, you can keep 4:2:0 which is still better than DV. Obviously the screen resolution can't be helped until you are mastering to HD.

  • Duplicating a portion of Pro Res media for use in another project

I'm working on a compilation video which is drawing from many different interviews.   I need to duplicate certain sections of 1080p 29.97 Pro Res timelines and then bring them into a new FCP 7.0.3 project.
The clips will be pulled from many different external drives.  And I can't connect all these drives together at the same time.
So my question is...when I am on the FCP timeline of one of these older projects, how do I best copy a section of it while keeping it in Pro Res and hopefully not having to recompress it?   I don't want to go back to the AVCHD camera files that it was generated from.
Would I "Send to Compressor" right off the timeline and use one of the Pro Res settings?  Same as source settings, etc.
Or would I "Export as a Quicktime" movie off the timeline?  Settings info?
I am trying to preserve the image quality but at the same time this will not be for broadcast.   It's for a non-profit's website.
Any advice on this would be very much appreciated...
    Thanks,
    John

If you are trying to Media Manage selections from a sequence that span multiple clips, then create a new sequence and copy and paste all the selected parts into the new sequence so that it contains only the selected sections of content you want to copy and consolidate.
Then, with that new sequence selected, open the Media Manager and make sure that Include Master Clips outside selection and Include Affiliate Clips outside selection are unchecked, and the Delete Unused Media from Duplicated Items is checked.
Unless you are leaving room for handles in your selection process,  check Use Handles and dial in a duration, so that your clips have some padding.

  • HOW DO I CONVERT F4VS TO APPLE PRO RES?

Hi, I need to transfer a premiere pro project as a XML to FCP so i plan to convert the files into premiere pro  into Apple prores so they can opened in a Apple Pro Res project in FCP. The files I need to convert are the original MOVs and F4vs so the movs won't be a problem but the I've tried converting the f4Vs in Adobe Media Encoder and it seems to suggest I need FCP installed on my computer to convert them to pro res bu there must be a way of getting F4vs in to FCP. This is a project I'm transferring to be opened on someone elses computer in their FCP so how is this done?
    PLEASE HELP!
I have the apple pro res codec already installed on my computer and downloaded a free trial of Pavtube but when I tried converting a F4v file into prores it said I need Final Cut already installed on my computer so would wondershare say the same thing. Sorry but I just want to be clear so...If I convert all the movie files in my Premiere Project into Apple Pro Res then export that as a XML then send all the individual files along with the XML project file to another computer they would be able to open the XML project all good and fine in FCP7?... There isn't any speed adjusted clips in the project as with those I nested and converted them into f4vs in Media Encoder then reimported them into the Pro project, then there are a few clips that I have adjusted the scale and postion and put on a slight fade on some clips- would those effects transfer to FCP7 ok ?
The project files I used in Pro are-
    Editing Mode: DSLR,
    25fps,
    frame size 1920 x 1080, vertical 16:9,
Pixel Aspect Ratio, Square Pixels (1.0)
    Fields : No Fields(Progressive Scan)
    Sample Rate 48000,
    Video Previews-
Preview File Format I-Frame Only Mpeg
    Codec Mpeg I-frame
So if they open a project in FCP7 with as much of those settings as possible and in Apple Pro Res and then import the XML would that work?
Any advice would be extremely welcome and I'll be very greatful.Cheers
    Simon

Try using MPEG Streamclip. Seems to work for a lot of folks.

  • P2 Footage and FCP X

I received some P2 footage (720PN), most of which I was unable to import into FCP 6.0.6 using Log & Transfer so I decided that this might be a great time to upgrade to FCP X.  So I did, but FCP X had the same problem -- about half of the files would not import properly.  All of the files played fine using P2CMS, and in the end I was able to use P2ProLog to transcode everything to Pro Res and then edit in FCP X.
    1) Shouldn't I be able to import any P2 footage into FCP X?
    2) Could the "720PN" be the issue?

I had all of the files transferred from the camera to a hard drive, and I did use import from camera (even though it's on a drive).  Some of the files work and some didn't.  I also checked that there were no weird file names or delete clips -- both of which can cause problems.
