Problem Cisco Catalyst 3850 input errors
Ive installed two stacked Catalyst 3850s. Connected to these two switches I have a SAN 6210 Equallogic Dell ESX .
The interfaces on the switches is bundels with Port-channel. MTU size 9198. On swich one its no problem but on switch two I see input errors on these interface.
If I move the cables from switch two to one then its ok...
I have two 10G going to the SAN. And 4 ESX server with 2 ISCSI each.

Cisco Catalyst 3850 as ntp master
Hi All,
I have 2 x Cisco Catalyst 3850 stacked together. What are your recommendations if I use the C3850 as a ntp master for all edge switches connected in my network? All edge switches must be authenticated if it needs NTP sychronization. But other than that, what are the downsides?
For example,
1. I heard that switches do not have an internal clock so is a poor device to be a centralized NTP master.
2. I have also read that switches also have slow CPU processors that may lack the processing required.
3. Its NTP sychronization will use external NTP servers which are resolved into IP addresses (e.g. pool.ntp.org). IP address can change. What other more reliable NTP sources are there?
4. Any other thoughts and comments are most welcome.Firstly, DO NOT use the command "ntp master". Cisco do not recommend using this commands because this will confuse the NTP propagation inside the network.
Next, all Cisco devices do not have a dedicated clock. All appliances need to get SNTP/NTP time synch from somewhere. This "somewhere" could either be a dedicated GPS-based NTP server and/or a time synch somewhere out in the internet.
You can also use the command "ntp update-calendar". This new command allows appliances to take regular "snapshot" of the time and save it into the NVRAM. In case there was a reboot or a power failure, the appliance's time is not too far away instead of waiting 5 to 10 minutes for SNTP/NTP to synch. -
How many Cisco Catalyst 3850 switches can make up a Cisco StackPower stack?
I know the number of Cisco 3850 switches for stacking is 9, so, if I make up a Cisco StackPower stack, MAX is 9, too?
Hi, emma, only 4 switches can become part of the same Cisco StackPower stack in a ring topology.
For the Cisco 3850 switches stack number, there are two types:
Up to 9 Cisco Catalyst 3850 switches can be stacked together to build single logical StackWise-480 switch since Cisco IOS XE Release 3.3.0SE. Prior to Cisco IOS XE Release3.3.0SE, up to 4 Cisco Catalyst 3850 switches could be stacked together. -

Cisco catalyst 3850 switch won't take command: "switchport mode trunk encapsulation dot 1q"
Hi all,
I'am working on this switch's configuration. when I typed "switchport mode trunk encapsulation dot 1q", I got an error " invavid input". I'm guessing that this model already set encapsulation type to dot 1q, and that's why the switch won't take it, right?
Please help!According to the documents it supports both.
You are however using the wrong command, it should be -
"switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q"
ie. no "mode" keyword.
If it doesn't take that then do a "sh int <x> capabilities" and it should show you which encapsulation methods are supported.

Hi ,
I have a question. If the only requirement for the DC is to have iSCSI for some servers , is it better to go for Nexus 3K or I should choose Cat 3850. Apparently with 10 gig uplinks Cat 3850 is more expensive. Can someone plz tell what would be the benefits of each in this scenario?
FawadHi ,
Cat 3850 is mainly used for unify wired and wireless networks. Cisco Catalyst 3850 Switches, which combine wired and wireless by supporting wireless tunnel termination and full wireless LAN controller functionality.
In other hand , Nexus 3000 is datacenter top of the rack switch and low latency , unify data ad storage switch and well suited for your Iscsi requirement . so i would suggest nexus 3000 .

Catalyst 3850 rack mount kit: 3850-RACK-KIT or C3850-4PT-KIT ?
When purchasing a Cisco Catalyst 3850, do we need to buy the rack mounting kit to install it in a standard 19" rack? 3850-RACK-KIT or C3850-4PT-KIT ? Is the 4-point kit really necessary, can the 3850 hang only on the front of the rack?
No, you don't need the C3850-4PT-KIT. 3850-RACK-KIT comes in the box and it is good enough as long as you rack it nice and tide. The reason some people use C3850-4PT-KIT is because the switch will hang from the back a little when using 3850-RACK-KIT and so if you don't like that than you want the 4PT.

Catalyst 3850 Cross-Stack EtherChannel
On 3850 configuration guide, I came across PAgP desirable mode is not supported in the switch stack (cross-stack EtherChannel).
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3850/software/release/3se/layer2/configuration_guide/b_lay2_3se_3850_cg/b_lay2_3se_3850_cg_chapter_0101.html
But on Q&A document, it mentioned 3850 supports PAgP.
Q. What cross-stack EtherChannel link bundling protocols are supported?
A. The Cisco Catalyst 3850 supports Cisco Port Aggregation Protocol (PAgP) and industry-standard IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP). Other 3750 Series Switches support only LACP for cross-stack EtherChannel.
Seems like both statements are contradicting.
Can someone shed some light on this?
Thank you.Hi, adimakmur
Cisco Catalyst 3850 Cross-Stack EtherChannel can be PAgP+ and can be used for VSS dual active detection.
In last deployment of 3850 we use Cross-Stack EtherChannel and use it as trusted for VSS dual active detection.

Cisco Catalyst WS-C3560-48TS and DLINK 3120 interface errors
Hello,
We are getting a lot of FCS-Err in one FC- GIgabit trunking interface between Cisco Catalyst WS-C3560-48TS running IOS Version 12.2(25)SEE3 and DLINK 3120 Firmware 4.00.015.
Our config in the cisco is the following:
interface GigabitEthernet0/1
description SWITCH-Dlink01
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport mode trunk
macro description cisco-switch
spanning-tree link-type point-to-point
We have tried without "macro description cisco-switch" and "spanning-tree link-type point-to-point" too and the problem persist.
If we run "sh interfaces counters errors"
Port Align-Err FCS-Err Xmit-Err Rcv-Err UnderSize
Gi0/1 0 11423 0 11423 12516029
The errors counters in the DLINK are growing very fast too.
Usually these errors are related with hardware or cable problems, we have changed the cable, the SFP and the port, but the problem is still there.
We have activated the debug for the interface and syslog, but we aren't getting any error.
Do you have any idea about this issue or how to troubleshoot it?Hi,
Try to hard set the ports on both sides to Gig/full duplex and test again.

Cisco IP phone problem with external directory http error
Hi,
I have a problem when I try to open the directory on different model Cisco IP Phone for new deployment.
In CUCM (version 8.5) we have configured internal and external directory and on each device set the "service provisioning" to "both". For all the sites configured in CUCM this feature is working properly, but not in the new deployed site. I´ve already verified the url is written properly.
I get the following error messages for these different models:
- Cisco IP phone 8945: "HTTP connection failed"
- Cisco IP Comm: "HTTP error [500] "
Thank you for your help,
Regards,
David LozanoHi David,
What firmware are you using? Do you have 8945s on the other sites? I found a bug, but I'm not sure it applies to your description:
CSCty58000 Bug Details
8945 freezes when directories is pressed
Symptom:
8945 freezes when directories button is pressed.
Conditions:
This issue happens when the phone load is 9.2.3 and the directories URL doesn't contain port number.
Workaround:
Please use http://X.X.X.X:8080/ccmip/xmldirectory.jsp for the directories
URL instead of http://X.X.X.X/ccmip/xmldirectory.jsp
You can try upgrading to firmware 9.3(1)
