Problem creating a disk image

Hello I'm trying to create an encrypted disk image on one of my external hard drives using the OSX Disk Utility, and am receiving the following error:
'unable to create "file Name.dmg". (no such file or directory)'
I'm creating the disk image as read/write, and with 128-bit AES encryption.
I've tried to create another disk image on my OSX HD (not an external), and still get an error, only this time:
'unable to create "file Name.dmg". (resource busy)'
Any suggestions? There is plenty of free space on both hard drives.
I'm running a Power PC G5 duel 2ghz, with OSX v 10.5.8.
Many thanks in advance...

OK it seems no one can help, so I'll try a different question;
The reason I want to create an encrypted disk image is because I've been everywhere on the 'net' and cant find out how to password protect a folder on my Mac.
This seems like something that should be very straight forward, but for the life of me I cant find what I'm looking for. Every post I read refers to creating an encrypted disk image, or playing with folder permissions - non of which actually achieve the desired result.
Surely its not that hard create a folder that requires a password to be viewed??

  • Problems creating a disk image on an external hard drive

    Hiya,
I've been trying to create a disk image on my dad's external hard drive to hold my back-ups all day with no luck. I've managed small ones, e.g. a few MB, but when trying to create images 20 or 40 GB in size (which is what I need), it isn't working.
When I've tried creating them in Disk Utility with the place to save them to as the external HD, it says "Unable to create... Illegal seek" which doesn't explain much to me! I have been successful in creating a large disk image on my own HD, but when I try to move it to the external HD, it says "Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (Error code -1309)."
    Extra info:
    - I am saving my back-ups in a disk image, as they must be password protected, so that's why I'm not just copying them over.
    - There's plenty of space avaliable on the external HD, so it would seem that isn't the problem.
    - The HD is a Freecom Classic SL, connected via USB cable.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks alot,
    Charity

Found the answer. It was formatted for Windows.

  • Problem creating encrypted disk image

I have just moved from an Aluminium PB G4 with 10.3.9, on which I successfully created encrypted disk images and sparse images.
I now want to do the same on a brand new WD My Book attached to the new Macbook Pro. I open Disk Utility and click New Image. But when I do so, there are fewer options than there are on the old machine. I only have
    Save As
    Where
    Image Format
    Encryption
No option for specifying size, no sparse option.
Also, if I try and create a dmg on the My Book, I get 'Unable to create "myfilename.dmg". (Invalid argument)'
    Any suggestions? Thanks

V.K.'s suggestion worked. Thank you. But now I've found that I get the full set of options in Disk Utility too. Baffled.
In the week I've been using my new Macbook Pro, I seem to be getting eerily similar experiences, i.e. apps don't work right, then I quit and next time they behave themselves. Yes, I know it sounds weird.
Is this an appropriate place for me to ask further questions. Namely, what's the best place to find out about 1. read/write v. sparse disk v. sparse bundle? 2. partitions - should I used them, whatever they are? and 3. why are the bigger disk images called CDs and DVDs? If I want a passworded place to put files on my external drive, bigger than 500MB, is there any reason not to use one of the CD/DVD size options?
    Thanks

  • Trying to create HD disk image on external drive

I'm trying to use the disc utility to create a disk image of my HD, saved to an external drive (500 GB, My Book) via FireWire. After choosing the appropriate origin and destination info on the drop-down menus, and clicking Save, I get a dialogue box that for an instant shows the operation in progress, then reverts to: Unable to save DMG, resources busy. I might not have the exact words, but it's very close.
What am I doing wrong? What resource is "busy", the HD or the external? The dialogue box doesn't indicate that info. I'm not aware of any obvious conflicts. No other applications are running.

Were you trying to copy the Mac OS volume?
I think the OS itself is a big program that is running. So somehow the source is changing every minuets. You may try SuperDuper! or Carbon copy cloner to do what you want, both of which are free, at least some of the main functions are. They should have no problem when dealing with the OS that is currently running.

  • Disk Utility reports "resource busy" and can't create an disk image

    HI,
Just succesfully updated to Mountain Lion on my MBA and iMac. No problems. A very smooth proces.
But, on my iMac the Disk Utility are not able to create new images at all! I'm not sure if this relates directly to the update, as
DU works fine on the MBA.
I have tried to create a simple disk image from a folder, sparse bundle disk images and sparse disk images - with and without encryption.
They al gave this output from DU: "Unable to create "MYDiskImage.sparsebundle." (Resource busy).
I understand from other postings on the web that others have experienced the same message from time to time, but have not seen a fix for it anywhere.
I can see the "disk iamge" in the DU window (left pane) but are not able to locate it with Finder or on the computer anywhere, but are even able to "repair the
disk image with DU, but then there is actually no disk image when trying to locate it. Very strange.
    Any help?

    Hi Darth,
Thanks for the suggestion. Somehow I managed to solve the issue (the question was posted in July), I  think I restarted the computer a couple of times, but it's interesting that you mention Drive Genius and Drive Pulse, as I also had that app running!
Maybe Drive Pulse was also turned of here in my process and helped to solve the issue.

  • Disk Utility - Create encrypted disk images super sloooow

Trying to create encrypted disk images via Disk Utility on my iMac (i7 8GB) is super-slow in 10.8.   It worked quite fast in 10.7, but now it's super-slow and doesn't even seem to ever finish.
    I've tried re-installing 10.8 with no difference.
Anyone else having trouble with this?  Even a small dmg (~200MB) doesn't seem to work.
Unencrypted images seem to work OK (if not a little slow).
I realize that the encryption process will be slower but something is definately wrong with 10.8 disk utility in this regard.  I have 1TB+ free space.  I have tried with another user account as well.
My task was: (new disk image, read-write, 128bit encryption)

Have you tried using Disk Utility from within the recovery mode? (Hold down CMD and R when booting)
I used to have this problem but creating them this way really improved the time.

  • How do you create a disk image of windows so u can increase partition size?

Ok, I have installed windows on my mac using bootcamp so i can play pc games and such. I mainly use the mac side of the computer but I have 30 GB devoted to windows. I ran out of space though and now want to uninstall windows so i can make the windows partition bigger. The problem is that I don't want to have to install ALL of my programs over again once i reinstall windows so I want to take a disk image of windows which i can revert to once it is reinstalled. I tried using the disk utility to do it but it keeps giving me error messages. Does anyone know how do create a disk image using windows??? or maybe I'm doing something wrong with the disk utility??? HELP!

The easiest way I have found to do this is to backup the windows partition with a program such as WinClone
    http://twocanoes.com/winclone/
Then use the bootcamp assistant to erase and recreate the partition, finally restoring the backup to the new partition. I have done this several times with my mac and it works great.

  • Fix to the problem-- Back up Disk Image could not be mounted

In order for TC to backup your entire HD it needs to create a Disk Image on your Mac. For example you would have seen your computer do this operation if you ever installed programs on your Mac computer.
I actually had this same problem and I searched the forum for answers. One fix that I found was that your computer might actually not be named. To fix this click on the apple in the upper left hand corner and then go to >System Preferences. Then click on >Sharing, after you do that you will see Computer name at the top. Type in whatever name you like for that part and then also turn on file sharing by clicking the box next to it below.
The other fix to this problem...which was actually the solution to mine, was that during setup 2 files for a Disk Image mount were created onto the Time Capsule itself. It is only supposed to have one. *In order to fix this problem-->If your Time Capsule is setup so it allows file sharing you should be able to see it as a connectable disk drive in your Finder window under sharing. Click on Time Capsule from there and enter in you password. You should now be able to search though the files on it. Since this is your first time setting it up there should only be one file visible on the Drive and that one file is what creates the mounted Disk Drive...(What I found on my Time Capsule drive was a file labeled with a bunch of numbers and then a Shared folder and then another file with a bunch of numbers in that). For me it actually turned out that the first file was not working properly but the one in the shared folder was. So I deleted the first file and dragged the second file that was working out of the shared folder and into the main part of the Time capsule Disk and then deleted the shared folder.
The way you can tell which file is the correct one is by double clicking it, if you get an error message right away, delete it. If it starts to load, then that is the file you should keep. After I did this mine worked fine and backed up my disk last night. I hope this helps

I have had the time capsule since it first shipped. In that time I've TWICE suffered a corrupt backup disk image (which I checked by trying to hand mount it by selecting the TC under sharing, and trying to open the sparse image - each time it failed and reported an unfixable error). Each time this occurred after the machine had been working flawlessly for 3 or 4 weeks. This makes the machine completely useless in respect of Time Machine. The disk seems to check out as I've just zero'd all data and it did not report a fault, and I have now reset the capsule (using the hole at the back) hoping that perhaps I can give it one last shot. It seems to me that basing these backups on a diskimage is a bad idea because in principle you could lose a single bit and the diskimage will not mount (unless there's redundancy in whatever header information etc. it uses) and then you lose ALL your files. I would have thought that backing up as individual files would be more robust to occasional corruption. Anyhow, this is all very disappointing, and I've been in touch with an Apple rep I deal with to seek advice. Apple need to fix this. I don't know if it's a problem with Time Capsule, or Time Machine.

  • Problem creating a binarize image

    Hi,
I have a problem creating a binarized image.
I have an java.awt.Image from Twain (with the Morena Framework) I have to compressing with COMPRESSION_GROUP4. Before I must obtain a binarized RenderedImage.
Before I have need of one single-band image.
With this code I succeed to obtain a single-band image but for acquired images with 100 dpi resolution only and moreover images have inverted colors.
How I can obtain single-band images with resolution larger than 100 dpi?
    public static RenderedImage binarizer(RenderedImage img){
            double[][] matrix = {{ 1.0 , 1.0 , 1.0 , 0.0}};
            ParameterBlock pb1 = new ParameterBlock();
            pb1.addSource(img);
            pb1.add(matrix);
            RenderedImage bandCombinedImage = JAI.create("bandcombine",pb1);
            RenderedImage binarizedImg = JAI.create("binarize", bandCombinedImage, new Double(1));

  • Why suddenly unable to create a disk image from a CD?

I successfully created a disk image from a CD only 5 days ago. Now when I try to create a disk image from a CD (with Disk Utility) the Superdrive rumbles along for sveral minutes, while the progress bar indicates that it has reached the end of its progress.
Only after all that does a dialog box indicate:
"Unable to create "___.dmg"-Invalid Argument. "
I haven't added software but did upgrade to iTunes 6. Doubtful that could affect my abilty to create a disk image.
Would someone kindly shed some light on why this may be happening?
    Steve

Is it strange that this problem seems CD-specific?
Some CDs are copy-protected and some CDs are not copy-protected; so, no, it's not strange at all that you should be able to copy some CDs and not be able to copy others.

  • Unable to create a Disk Image

    Hi!
I am trying to backup my boot HD to a disk image, a sparse bundle. I have done this successfully in the past using Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper, but this time I am getting an error message in both programs — "The image creation procedure  failed". I have tried two internal HDs on my Mac Pro, and then an external Firewire HD as a target area for the disk image, and I get a same result. FInally I just tried to use OS X Disk Utility to create a disk image from scratch, and this also fails with a dialog "Unable to create name.sparsebundle, Resource Busy".
I can see there is some systemic issue here, but I don't understand what could that be. I would appreciate any wisdom on the matter, as I really have to backup my HD. Thanks in advance!
    Rad

    Hello,
I'm having the same problem. Re-installing the operating system fixed it, but I think Onyx messed it up again. Still not sure what it is that is causing it.
Reverting the setting on Onyx did not fix, and I don't want to go about re-installing again.
I'm wondering if you have run Onyx on your system lately?

  • Can't create encrypted disk image

With Leopard, I have repeatedly followed the instructions for using Disk Utility to make an encrypted disk. All appears to go well...all fields appropriately filled, including 128 encryption. But when I hit create, either nothing happens, or I get a second Disk Utility starting window. In any case, I am not asked to create a password, and am unable to find any trace of the disk I thought I'd just created. Would welcome your thoughts.

While creating, make sure that it's saved to the desktop so you will know where it is supposed to be, at least.. Was wondering if posssibly you lost them. Look for the named disks in your home folder and in HD on chance they are there somewhere.
I know you went to Help but just making sure you are creating disks this way (below). Everything worked fine for me--
If things still don't work, turn off DU and move to the desktop "com.apple.DiskUtility.plist" in your home folder/library/preferences. A new file will be created when disk utility is turned on again. Deleting plist files don't usually don't solve problems but sometimes they can become corrupted.
    Good luck
    RM
1 choose File > New > Blank Disk Image.
2 Type a name for the image, and choose where you want to save it.
3 In the Volume Name field, type a name for the volume that appears when you open the disk image.
4 Choose the size of the disk image from the Size pop-up menu.
5 Be sure you choose a size that’s large enough to hold any changes and new documents you might add.
6 Choose an encryption option from the Encryption pop-up menu.
7 Use the default settings for the rest of the options:
8 Choose “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” from the Volume Format pop-up menu.
9 Choose “Single partition - Apple Partition Map” from the Partitions pop-up menu.
10 Choose “read/write disk image” from the Format pop-up menu.
    11 Click Save.
Enter a password, and click OK.
Disk Utility creates the disk image and mounts its volume on your desktop.
Copy the documents you want to protect to the volume.
If you want to erase the original documents so they can’t be recovered, drag them to the Trash and choose Finder > Secure Empty Trash.

  • Idvd wont create a disk image

    I am using imovie '09 v. 8.0.6 and idvd v 7.04 which came with ilife '09
As I am still using a PowerPC my future upgrade is limited until I move upgrade intel cpu.
I am trying (without success) to burn a 40 min movie to idvd. The project also includes a 67 photo slideshow, all pictures are around 18mp jpegs.  I have 42gb of free disc space before I commence the burn and on the last two attempts, I have had the following problems.
    1. idvd wont complete encoding when using Revolution theme.  Also, Revolution chapter theme (second screen) will not play audio depsite the inspector showing the audio is enable in the audio drop zone.  On my last attempt, on exporting from imovie into idvd, no audio soundtrack in idvd despite the project worked fine within imovie.
    2. I feel Revolution theme has a bug whereby audio won't play on the chapter page despite it being enabled in the audio inspector window.
I have deleted my com.apple.idvd.plist file as suggest in other threads (as I understood idvd would then create a new one) but the problem prevails.
I have also repaired all my disk permission through disk utility as also suggested.
Can I reinstall just idvd from my ilife disk and would this affect the integrity of any existing projects? Alternatively has anyone any suggestions on how I may finish the burn to a disk image.
PS All worked well on my last project a few weeks ago.... I have a hunch it's the file size.  All suggestions welcome.
    Many thanks in advance.

Thanks for responding Bengt.  Here is the workaround.
    Problem:
imovie '09 (8.0.6) looses all soundtrack when sharing to idvdv 7.0.4 plus idvd wouldn't allow creation of a disk image.
    Findings:
It would appear all my problems start with the fact my machine - PowerMac G5 1.8ghz dual proc. 4 GB RAM IS NOT sufficient to run imovie '09.  Depsite the fact I was able to produce my project in imovie, the problems began as soon as I started to share and burn the project with idvd.
See confirmation of this point from Appleman on this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15443520#15443520
    Solution:
    1. I copied the imovie project to an external drive connected to my PowerMac G5 via FW800.
Note it is vital you follow this process to copy an imovie project from one drive to another:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/8.0/en/19548.html
This process ensures all links are preserved.  This worked perfectly for me and I understand it is the correct way to move imovie 09 projects to other drives.
    2.  I then disconnected the external Firewire drive connected to my PowerMac and connected it to my MacBook (Intel) to the Firewire drive using FW 400 to 800 cable.  After ensuring the drive could be viewed in finder by using the drives mount software, I then loaded imovie '09 on the MacBook.
and the drive then appeared in the imovie project window.
    3. Share project to idvd, complete project in idvd by adding a slideshow.
    4. Created a disk image in idvd - Note - I saved the idvd project and the disk image back to the external firewire drive given I had 1tb free space.
The problems were (imo) all caused by using an old platform PM G5 non Intel and lack of internal disk space.
Thanks Bengt and Appleman for all your help.

  • What can I do to create a disk image when I continue to get the prompt "permission denied"?  I have run the permission repair, restarted the computer and nothing changes.

I want to create a disk image for important information.  I continue to get "Permission Denied" even though I have run the disk utility for repair and verify disk permissions.  Is there a solution for this?

I had same problem as I was trying to build a windows iso following the bootcamp instructions (last evening).  I learned you cannot create a disk image at root due to changes in the operating system made by apple.  As a user (even an admin user) you can only create a disk image below root (such as in your desktop).  Any attempt to creat an image at root will return permission denied.
The Apple Disk Utility (on three macs I have tried so far) defaults to creating an iso image at the root.  If you tell it to create the image - you immediately get a permission denied error.
None of the iso creation instructions I have found on apple site so far speak to this.

  • There was an error creating your disk image.

FCPX v 10.1 In exporting a completed project to a disk image, the following error message came up:   There was an error creating your disk image.  VIDEO_INPUT_READ_ERR
It only has occurred on one project (so far).
Has anyone encountered this type of error and found a suitable work around?

If it only happened with that one project, a reasonable  guess is that the problem is in the media – either an original clip or a render file. Deleting the render files from the File menu for both project and events would be a good place to start. Turn off BG Rendring and without rendering,  see whether a short selection  will export as a master file. If it does, try the img again.
