Problem formatting text

I have this problem in formatting (I think the correct word is formatting) the text in a table of contents I'm making. What I want to do is the following:
True out the document I have got these headers that look like this:
1.2.3. Dit - Is - Text
Say this subject is covered on page 50 of my document, then the entry in the table of contents should be:
1.2.3. Dit - Is - Text..................50
So far so good. But then my problem: underneath this entry is an other one, lets say:
1.2.3.4. Dit - Is - Text - Ook .....51
When you see these two below each other, you can see that the text (the D's in "Dit") doesn't line up:
1.2.3. Dit - Is - Text..................50
1.2.3.4. Dit - Is - Text - Ook .....51
What I want to do is more or less the following;
1.2.3.    Dit - Is - Text..............50
1.2.3.4. Dit - Is - Text - Ook .....51
(The D's in "Dit" should line up exactly.)
I don't want to do this manually because the table of contents might still change so it will be nice if I can do this automatically.
Does anyone have a clue how I could do this. I took a look at nesting styles, but I don't think the solution is in there (but i might very well be wrong). Some one mentioned grep but I haven't got a clue how to use grep... (and it didn't really seem suitable for my problem.)
I can imagine it's quite easy, but i'm kind of a novice when it comes to InDesign and computers as a whole.
I'm using Adobe InDesign CS3 (English version) on a Windows 7 computer.

I think Peter is going in the right direction (I did just type in the numbers and didn't generate them in a numbered list of some sort). When I type "((\d\.)+)" in the GREP "Find what:" field it finds the "1.2.3." / "1.2.3.4." and so on parts of the paragraph names in my Table of Contents. All i need to do is add a tab after this part of the paragraph name. I think you did explain how to, but i didn't really get it. When I enter "$1\t" in the "Change to:" field the result is something like this:
(before i do the grep search / change to)
1.5.1.3. Beheer - Productbeheer - Producten - Prijzen bewerken...63
(after I do the grep search / change to)
1.5.1.3. ...........................................................Beheer - Productbeheer - Producten - Prijzen bewerken...63
Thats in the right direction, but i don't need all the dots, I just need a tab!
Peter are you Dutch (your name sounds kinda Dutch) because then maybe you could explain to me in Dutch (which would make things a bit easier for me).

  • Problem with text formatting on upload

    Hi there,
I am new to iWeb and coming from a design background where I'm used to being able to format text leading and character spacing in programs like inDesign.
I have found where to do this in iWeb so that my text is not all bunched up and close together, giving the layout some breathing space, but when I publish the site and view it online this formatting doesn't work and the text goes back to its old bunched up look.
Does anyone have a tip on how to fix this?
    Thanks!

    Thanks Tom,
The URL is www.yachtprojects.eu and I am having all sorts of problems with the site now. I am based in France, using Orange as my ISP and I cannot access the site from either my home computer or my iPhone (which is also on Orange). It takes AGES to load and then finally comes up with the text but no images.
Other people however can see the site, and when I was in Ireland last week, I could see it, but it had some worse problems with the fonts not fitting the layout than I was describing before. I have no idea why this has happened or how to fix it and I'm currently looking at moving the site to a different server to see if that makes a difference. The current server people claim that they can see the site OK so they have no interest in helping me solve the problem.
With regard to viewing the site on other browsers, I have tried Safari, Firefox and Explorer and none can view the site properly from my home Mac. Other people everywhere else seem to be able to see the site, but I don't know if the text looks the way it should or not and I suspect the line spacing problem is still there.
The best representation of the site with just the initial problem of line spacing but all other things OK is if you look at it on my mobile me server: http://web.me.com/alisononline/yachtprojects/Home.html this is the way the site was meant to look, but just with the line spacing not as spread out as it should be.
It would be wonderful if you could help shed some light on these problems for me!
    Thanks
    Alison

  • How do I use Dreamweaver CC 2014.1 Live View to copy complex formatted text into web page?

Since Design View has been removed from Fluid Grid Layouts, and could be removed completely in next upgrade, I cannot use Live View to place complex text into my web pages.
Our business requires the listing of complex job descriptions on our web pages.  Design View worked fine, Live View does not. Both examples are noted below.

Obviously, as seen above, I'm doing something wrong or Live View does not do all the functions that Design View use to do.  I realize I can still access Design View in non-Fluid Grid Layout documents and that is my current work-around.  I copy from my Word file into Design View available in non-Fluid, then copy that code into my Fluid Grid Layout document, not real efficient use of my time.  And, even that work-around may not be available after the next upgrade.

Hans thank you for your reply and attention to this matter.  Moreover, with your steeped expertise I do not, in any fashion, intend to be flippant or capricious.
However, I do not believe the reply is on point since I'm not discussing the insertion of an HTML tag/element; but rather, the placing of complex formatted text into my various web pages.
Design View and  2014.1 Live View seem to serve different functions.  That is, Design View, for us, serves as a highly sophisticated HTML5 code generator that allows us to properly display complex formatted text that originally is created as a Word docx file.  As I noted in my original post, the complex formatted text from the Word file is then pasted into Design View and thus properly renders on the web page.  I invite you to try this yourself.  Simply copy my properly formatted text in my original post (that can be found at "Using Design View the web page rendered this way:") to a Word file, and it will retain the complex formatting, then copy that Word file text to both Design View and  2014.1 Live View files.  Please apprise me of your results.
Discussion has been had in at least two separate threads on the Design View disappearance in Fluid Grid.  In https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1597260 staff member Lalita wrote "It would be helpful for us if you list the issues you are seeing with fluid grid live view editing."  And in https://forums.adobe.com/message/6807088#6807088 staff member Subhadeep wrote "If you can list down the workflows you are trying while editing in Live View & the issues you are facing in doing so, it will help us understand what is amiss & suggest alternative workflows to do the same."  I believe I've pointed out issues when attempting to use Live View for functions or work flow that customarily had been done in Design View.
Being a CC subscriber, if someone can provide me with a workflow using other additional Adobe products to get my complex formatted text from Word ultimately to my Dreamweaver web page, be it an image insert or whatever, I would take the suggestions.
The difference in the coding of my example in my original post is as follows.

It is readily apparent that Design View is a much needed code generator in the Dreamweaver product.  Live View serves completely other, and needed, purposes.  Therefore, I still, after all the forum discussions, do not understand why Design View has been removed from Fluid Grid.
Again Hans thank you for your reply.  But unless I'm missing something, citation to the links you provided does not solve my problem.  And that problem is this: If Design View is on its way out and thus will be completely removed from Dreamweaver at some point, then how do I provide my information (i.e. complex executive job descriptions) on my website?
Apparently a vote is taking place https://forums.adobe.com/ideas/3922 on the issue of placing Design View back into Fluid Grid.  I do not understand why the need for two rather disjunctive functionalities are at the mercy of the democratic process.  These are matters of engineering principles not "town hall gatherings".

  • Can no longer past formatted text into Mail in iOS 5...

With iOS 4.x on my iPad, I was able to past in rich, formatted text from other apps.  So I could compose an email with colored text, different fonts/sizes, bulleted lists, etc. in another app and past it into Mail.  It would keep all of it's formatting.
With the upgrade to iOS 5, this no longer works.  Everything I paste into Mail has no formatting.  I saw this first on my iPad 2 but I just tried on my iPhone 4S and the result was the same.
Even if I receive colored text in an email, I can't copy it from one place in the email to another and keep the color format.
Is there some new setting that is disabled that stops me from doing this?  Is anybody else seeing this problem?
    Thank you,
    Roman

I am using indesign CS2 and i'm trying to import a Word document into a new chapter for a book i'm laying out. it's about 30 pages, but there are at least 80 foot notes. i'm able to get about 1/2 of the document with the footnotes to flow correctly, then EVERYTHING disappears. the only way i've been able to get the remaining text to appear is by adding characters to the text. i'll hit "vvvvvvvvvvvv" a bunch of times and "magically" a little chunk of text and it's footnotes appears. then the ole disappearing act happens. so i do it again. i'm able to get all the text to appear finally, but when i delete the "vvvvvvvvvv" from the places i inserted them, the text disappears again. i have no idea why this is happening or how to fix it. any ideas?
    thanks so much,
    travis

  • How to use formatted text in a static text/laben(or other) component?

    Hello everyone,
my web application reads a VARCHAR from a SQL Server database which is bound to a static text/label component. The problem is that I don't manage to include line breaks this way.
Is there any way to do it? It doesn't have to be using a static text or label component, I just want to display formatted text on a web page which was read from a database.
Thank you very much for your help,
    Arthur

unfortunately it doesn't work this way(or I am doing it wrong as I don't know anything about css)
If I set white-space: nowrap the text is displayed in one single line ( so probably I implemented it the right way)
but with white-space:pre he still ignores all the whitespaces!
reading the same text (from a microsoft sql server table)with a textarea component all whitespaces and line breaks are shown! there has to be a way to make the static text or label component act this way(I don't want to use the textarea component because it's ugly and doesn't serve for my purpose).
    can anybody help me?
    edit: observation:
if I use "nowrap" for the textarea component he still keeps all whitespaces WITHIN the string but displays the whole string in one line
but somehow he deletes white spaces in the beginning of the string
the static text/label components delete all whitespaces before AND within the string

  • Problems Aligning Text in Headers and Footers

I have tried to add headers and footers to documents and the  alignment is wrong.  The center footer/header should be center-aligned  and the right header/footer should be right-aligned.  Unfortunately,  they are both left-aligned.
The preview shows the headers and footers aligned correctly, but when  the headers/footers are inserted in the document, the alignment reverts  to left aligned, although it is centered and on the right side of the  page, as appropriate.
This is not a problem in Acrobat 7.
Please advise if this is a bug and is awaiting an update, or if there is  something that I need to do to fix this problem.
This is a screen shot of the preview windowindicating the proper alignment as indicated in the ovals:
Here is the actual document once the header and footer are added.  Notice how the alignment switches to flush left:
    Any guidance is appreciated.
    Thanks.

Nope.  The good folks at Adobe have neither addressed this issue (and I have
heard from others that it is a problem for them as well) nor have they been
very good about maintaining my account to be able to log in and follow up on
    it.
The truth of the matter is that it appears to be a glitch in some, but not
all, versions of this product and clearly it is not a big enough problem for
them to want to fix it.
I wind up using Acrobat 7 when I need properly formatted headers and footers
or ‹ and this ought to get the attention of the folks at Adobe and maybe
prompt someone (anyone!) to take a look and fix this glitch ‹ you should
check out PDFPen.  It does much of what Adobe can do including headers and
    footers.
If I didn't already have Acrobat 7 (and 8 and now 9), I would ditch Acrobat
and just use Preview or PDFPen.

Anybody ever solve this problem? I just started using(trying too, that is)
Acrobat Pro for writing letters and starting at the top I ran right into
this problem. Seems like a deal killer.

  • Problem copying text from word to dreamweaver

    Howdy..
had a problem copying text from a word doc (07) to
dreamweaver, for some strange reason it missed a complete section
in the middle, 2 paragraphs gone... no errors... no blank spaces,
just would not copy and paste the section, everything b4 and after
was fine, the only way to correct this was to copy to
textpad/notepad first and then recopy and paste..
    anybody have any ideas ?
    anyone seen this happen b4?
    cheers
    Pythagonal

nope, there didnt seem to be any special formatting in the
word doc, just a straight forward press release, two of them
actually and they both had sections that didn't copy and paste.
what was very strange was it was sections in the middle of
the docs, and wasnt the same in both, was 2 different areas in
each, just when u copy'd and pasted it gave nothing..
and ive never seen anything like it b4,
ive just upgraded to CS4 a few weeks back and this is the
first time ive noticed it, ill keep my eye out and see if its
somethng to do with the way word is formatting stuff..
    cheers

  • Anyone seeing pastes as html instead of plain or formatted text?

I am being assisted by Microsoft here - but thought this may be a conflict problem so am posting here: Has anyone experienced this:?: In MS Word (2008 or 2011) when copying text in a document and then pasting, the pasted text is all html - blue and underlined and with some link.
This happens essentially ALL THE TIME now - and the initial "things to try" with MS have not cured this. The fact that it occurs with MS Word 2008 and 2011 (I have both on my MacBook Pro-13" May 2010 version running 10.6.6). I believe this started with MS Word 2008. I've not yet tested Excel and Powerpoint -but believe I may be seeing this with Excel as well. NO - SOME TESTING JUST NOW DOES NOT SHOW THIS AT ALL IN EXCEL 2011.
And when I copy some text from somewhere else (like this message) and then open a doc in Word and paste it- it pastes fine. But not when I take an existing doc and copy paste.
Any comments (or cures!) really appreciated. Again, I'm getting good, personal support from Microsoft - but my Mac is very personalized with startups programs and haxies and more––– I thought someone may have had a similar experience and could help.

I'm replying to my own post here because I may have found the answer-- It seems that CopyPaste Pro 2.3.3 is causing the conflict / problem with MS Word - causing it to paste html instead of regular or formatted text.
For the moment, I've reinstalled CopyPaste 2.2.7 and this does not seem to have the same problem. I just think Apple should include multiple pastes as a standard part of the OS. OK I'll write to them on that point.
Note that I will keep this post open a few more days in case the problem is more complex - i.e. that CopyPaste is conflicting with another (of my many) shareware programs which is then together causing the WORD paste problem -- but I don't think it is that complicated. Let's see what the CopyPaste team says.

  • Is it possible to add new columns with format "Text" once a table is linked to a form

Is it possible to add new columns with format "Text" once a table is linked to a form in Numbers for iPhone or is it impossible and thus a serious bug?(Rating stars and numeric vales seem to work.)
Those bugs happen both for new speadsheets as well as existing onces, like the demo. When you are in the form only the numeric keyboard shows up.
Pat from the Apple Store Rosenstrasse/Germany approved that it looks like a Bug during the Numbers Workshop I was in: It is not possible to add new columns with format "Text". I reported the error for Version 1.4 but there is no update nor do I get statement of understanding the issue.

    Hi Knochenhort,
I see what you are talking about now. Without knowing how the program actually works, I think this is what's going on:
When you add a new column to an already existing table (with already existing formats), the new cells come already formatted like the previous column. So when you add a column to the end of the demo table, the cells are already formatted like stars, and when you add a column to the beginning, they're already formatted like number.
I think this is why it's different when if you add columns to a table with blank (unformatted) columns. In that case, the new cells aren't already "tainted" with a set format, so you can change to text format without issue.
It seems like the problem is that you can't format cells that are already formatted as "number" as "text" format (even if it doesn't look like they are, because they are blank). IMO, this is a bug! This is why you don't see this issue when adding columns to a new table, because the new cells don't already come with a format.
To workaround, you can highlight the body cells after adding the new column, and delete the cells. This will "clear" the formatting, so you can then go in the inspector, format them as text, and the correct keyboard will pop up.
    Hope that helps!

  • Formatting text (bold, italics, etc) in webmail client does not work in Firefox; works in IE and Chrome

I use the Smarsh webmail client for my company's email service.
I have been using Firefox in the office for quite some time, and only recently has this issue come up.
When composing emails using the Smarsh client, I cannot format text (using bold, italics, or underline) using the buttons built in to the client. When I highlight text and click a formatting button, the cursor just moves to the end of the line.
Using keyboard shortcuts to edit the formatting works sometimes, but is sporadic (sometimes formatting PREVIOUSLY selected text but not the currently selected text).
I have tried downgrading to Firefox 16, 17, and 18 (as this problem has only come up in the last couple of weeks, and Firefox 19 was release I believe on 2/13), but this did not solve the problem either.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache.
Note: ''This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to.''
To clear cache and cookies do the following:
#Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
#Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
#Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
#From the details list, check ''Cache'' and ''Cookies'' and uncheck everything else.
#Now click the ''Clear now'' button.
Further information can be found in the [[Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox]] article.

  • Import(insert) formatted text(HTML) into document

Hi guys, I have faceed with folowing problem:
how to insert into text frame formatted text ?
At Indesign desktop version this feature was able through pasting HTML from clippboard with appropriate settings of clippboard preferences. But at server version there is no such function.
I have also invesigated XML import:  you can set up text and paragraph styles and map them with tags but this technique doesnt support nested styles for instance if you have <b><i>xxx</i></b> and appropriate styles "b" and "i" i will be applied to "xxx".
So I need to insert html as it did clipboard pasting.
    Any thoughts ?

    Questions:
    1. What version of SQL Server are you using?
    2. Are you required to use a specific DTS package or do you simply need to import data from a file to a table?  You might also consider using the bcp utility or, if you are using 2005 or newer, integration services.
    3. Is the uploading of files and the import of data a manual process or is it automated?  Is there a user uploading one file at a time to your server or do you receive files in batches.  Can you describe the work flow?
You might try the following if you are required to use DTS:
    1. Upload your text file with CFFILE, putting in the directory expected by your DTS package.
    2. Rename the file to the name required by your DTS package
    3. Use CFEXECUTE to run the DTS package by calling dtsrun at the command line.

  • How to -format text  in web dynpro?

    Hi all,
I want to display text messages in web dynpro in different colors.
and also to display some text in bold, some in italics etc
    How can i achieve that?
    Points assured for help?

    shobhendra,
Direct support for rich-formatted text is not available in current release of WD Java (though it exists in NW04s WD ABAP).
For workaround (HTML display) please refer my blog post:

  • Output required as formatted text (space delimited)

I need to get the output of a query in a strictly defined space delimited text format. Can anyone advise if that is directly possible in BIP? Currently the method I am using is that I have created an excel template specifying all the formats (column width, number format, etc.), then during runtime, I run the report, open it in excel (with macros disabled), do a "Save As" to save it as a .prn file (Formatted text file), then rename the prn file to .txt
This works although it is rather cumbersome. Any suggestions for simplifying the process?
    Thanks
    MS

Thanks Vetsrini, this is precisely what I was looking for. But somehow I am not able to fit things together. I made the rtf format and uploaded into BIP as etext template, but when I view, it doesn't say anything. I saw one of your earlier posts where you had replied to a member's similar query, you had told that there is some problem with the template. Is there any log on the server where the errors are logged?
And can you give the format for a simple query with just, say, 2 fields - empno and name (6 chars and 25 chars)? It would be great if you give the sample XML and the etext template. The one from the link you sent looks a bit complex.
    Thanking you in anticipation.

  • Cannot paste formatted text.

I am using ID CS 3 on a Macbook Pro, running OS 10.6.2.
My problem is that I have text formatted italic and bold from Text Edit but I cannot paste the formatted text (or import it) into ID without losing all formatting. I went to this Discussion Forum and looked there first and the only fix I am finding is to make sure that preferences allow me to paste formatted text. In my ID preferences it is selected that when pasting text from the clipboard that all styles will be retained but this is not what happens. I can copy and paste the formatted text in TextEdit and can also create formatted text within ID and copy and paste that as well. But I cannot do this between the two programs.
    Any suggestions?

What I am trying to place is an rtf text.
What I have done since posting this issue:
    1. Restarted ID several time, restarted computer.
    2. Logged in on another account, bypassing all logon items.
    3. Disabled all added plugins, leaving just the Adobe and required plugins.
    4. Started with a fresh ID document.
None of this has solved the problem, I simply CANNOT paste in formatted text.
    Other suggestions?

  • Usage of formatted text in SAP

    Hello,
I have a requirement to provide the user with an interface where formatted text can be maintained and this text needs to be transferred to a smartform and subsequently converted to a PDF.
I have problems with SO10 or Text modules in transaction code SMARTFORMS where any formatting that I apply gets vanished when I click on SAVE.
For example, the user will maintain text like below:
    Hello,
This is a sample formatted text maintained in SAP and this needs to be sent to SAP Smartform where the formatting in maintained.
    Thanks. .
The requirement is to produce the above text with the same formatting in smartform so that this is available in the PDF that i would be generating
    Regards,
    Srini

    Hi Srinivasan,
as for that you have to create a own style, which you connect to the user-interface, where the text is created and also in your smartform itself.
How to modify the SYSTEM-Form used nearly everywhere...
See here, how you can change the form for nearly all text-inputs in an ERP.
If you got a own program to maintain the text, it is a lot easier. Let me know, if face some problems here
