Problem with STEREO track

hi everyone.
this is a really dumn question since i used to do this all the time is Sonar.
i recorded some vocals and it only recorded in one channel. i could always hit the infinity button to make it mono so i can hear it on both speakers. however, isn't there some effect i can add to get sound on both channels and keep it the stereo track? i'm using the tascam us-122 as an interface and for some reason it only allows you to record on either the L or R. not both of them at the same time. any ideas?

Next time record the mic on two seperate tracks and set the track delay to taste on one of the tracks. Or -quick fix, copy the region to another audio track and set the track delay as above. Use pitch changer to drop or raise the pitch one cent or two (keep it subtle or it will ruin the vocal track). Next ime, you could also use two mics, one a condenser for direct (or ribbon or tube) and a dynamic pointed slightly off center (just becareful to watch for phase issues) small dead rooms work best because they minimize reflections and capture the "dry sound" More track delay can always be added to spread the stereo effect. I find that the spreader plug-ins are good for instruments but deadly to vocals. Your lead vocals have to be kept pure unless you are distorting on purpose. Megabucks are spent on mics and vocal processors by the larger studios for just this purpose. Two or three mics are always better than artificial effects. Try using your best mic in the usual place and set two ambient mics panned hard L/R - watch the phase and enjoy

  • Video with stereo track and click track for live performance

    Hello,
I have a video that was created in FCP sync'd with a stereo sound track and a click track. I need to play this video live (using projection) with the stereo track routed to the main outs and the click routed to the in-ear monitors for a performer to sync with. I have not done this before and am trying to wrap my brain around it. I'm also hoping to come up with the easiest and most reliable solution. As I understand it, this video will not be able to play back from a burned DVD, but rather will need to play back in Logic with 2 audio tracks (L/R) for the sound track and then 1 track for the click. These 3 tracks can then be routed to their required destinations from a soundcard or mixer.
Does this seem to be the best and most reliable method? I've only burned audio to video (never using a click) in FCP before and have always played back from a DVD. Now I have this live player/syncing component and am not sure of the best way to do it. I have some experience with Logic, but limited.
I really appreciate any suggestions/tips any one might have.
    Thanks.

I've opened the movie (with stereo track) in QT Pro and then added the click - and now the 2 audio files are there, sync'd up.
When you say you opened the movie in QT Pro, I assume you mean the QT Pro version of Quicktime Player 7. So let's say you have the movie open in Quicktime Player 7, and you press ⌘J (Window > Show Movie Properties). And in the window that appears, hopefully you see several items listed, including Sound Track 1 and Sound Track 2. These are your two audio files, that are now part of the movie file. One of those files is your stereo soundtrack, and the other is your click. So let's assume that this is a total of 3 channels of sound (because I understand your click is mono).
Select Sound Track 1, and select the tab Audio Settings. Let's assume this is the stereo soundtrack. In the scrolling area at the bottom right of the window, under the heading Assignment, you should see Left and Right. Let's leave it that way.
Now select Sound Track 2. Under Assignment, there should be just one item listed (that is, there is only one channel in this Sound Track, if the click is mono). Under Assignment, it probably says Mono. Change that to Center.
Save the movie. We're done with Quicktime Player for now. Launch Audio MIDI Setup. It's here:
    Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup
I assume you have an audio interface connected that supports at least 3 channels. In AMS, find the window (or tab, depending on your OS version) for Audio Devices. Select your audio interface. Select the Output tab, and press the button Configure Speakers. In the window that appears, select Multichannel, and change the menu selection from Stereo to 5.1 Surround.
You will probably see that "left front," "right front," and "center" are assigned to outputs 1, 2 and 3, respectively, of your audio interface. If not, make it so, and press the button Apply.
Now when you play your movie, the stereo soundtrack will appear at outputs 1 and 2 of your audio interface, and the click will appear at output 3. Now you can cable your stereo mains to 1/2 and your in-ear monitors to 3.

  • OMF import-How do others deal with stereo tracks?

When importing OMF's from Avid or FCP all stereo audio files come in on separate mono tracks (ie all music tracks will appear as two adjacent mono tracks). When track managing, all stereo audio files need to be moved from the mono tracks and placed on to stereo tracks (for inserting of effects, etc.) prior to editing and mixing.
In another pro audio ap that shall remain nameless, one would simply grab the stereo pair (left and right sides of the audio file) from the adjacent mono tracks and drag them onto a newly created stereo track. This method is extremely fast and is vital when faced with an hour long show (especially when the video editor hands off an OMF to which there is no rhyme or reason which happens more often than not!).
How is this accomplished in Logic?

    Rohan Stevenson1 wrote:
aaron, read through this twice before and now about 3 times more. i still don't understand your problem.
i would have prepared tracks prior to importing in logic, or imported them into some kind of template and shifted them around like that. i would use KCs to accomplish most of this. you only need the LH file to play back a split stereo file in stereo.
    Hi Rohan,
As a professional post audio mixer, I am given OMF's from either Avid or FCP from the client. I have no control over how the tracks are managed by the video editor prior to my receiving them.
Even if the video editor has track managed the audio appropriately (VO, production audio, FX and music all placed on their own tracks which rarely happens), the files will still come into a DAW on separate adjacent mono tracks.
For example, all of the music in an hour long program will come in with the left side of the stereo file on one mono track and the right side of the audio file on another mono track. This is just how OMF's translate from video aps to DAW's. The OMF cannot be tweaked to operate differently. It is what it is. Obviously any stereo elements need to be placed on stereo tracks for eq, compression and volume automation.
When mixing a show, the first thing that must be done is to 'track manage' all of your elements. Usually VO on one track, production audio split amongst a few tracks, mono and stereo effects on their own tracks and then a couple of stereo tracks for the music.
So let's say I open an OMF. The first thing that must be done is to go through the show, identify all of the stereo elements (most commonly music tracks and FX), grab them from the mono tracks that they came in on and place them on to newly created stereo tracks. In Pro Tools this is a fairly quick process as you are able to grab two mono files and drag them directly on to a new stereo track right in the arrange page.
Every time you open a new OMF you are confronted with hundreds of regions that need to be track managed before you can edit and mix. Deadlines are always tight so a fast and efficient method is a must.
What I am describing is standard practice in a post audio workflow when mixing for television. This is not a pressing issue as the studios I freelance for are all PTHD based. However, I would love to start testing my Logic rig at home to see how it stacks up on big sessions!
Any help or tips would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Problems with audio tracks

Happily pressing on with my first project when problems arose with audio tracks. Suddenly - when I added video clips I got sound on A2 but nothing showing on A1 (and sound only from right hand speaker). Clips are okay as sound is on both sides when played in Viewer and Canvas just can't add them both to timeline. It was okay up until the point I did my first audio fades within a clip (using the 'elastic bands'). Now I can't even insert a clip with both tracks ahead of that point. A1 just won't accept anything.
Now when I add a clip I only get audio on A3!!!!
Voiceovers all went onto A6 and are okay but is it normal for them to hide down there?
I am sure this is finger trouble on my part as I am so new to FCE but can anyone tell me how to recover?
    Thanks,
    Tom.

Sounds to me like the audio targeting is amiss somewhere.
In the audio tracks you will notice a1 & A1: meaning audio track 1 and the audio will go to that track when edited. To get stereo, two tracks will be used eg. a2 & A2. Having A1 and A2 is FCEs default setting with a1 & a2 selected. This setting will place stereo audio into these default tracks. If, for example, you want the tracks to be edited to A5 & A6 then you move the a1 to a5 and a2 to A6 (click and drag). This is called track targeting for obvious reasons, untill you change it, all new edited tracks go to tracks 5 & 6.
Click on a1 twice, did you notice it move and seperate from A1, this is a de-selected state (a gap between a1 & A1). When a clip is edited to A1 in this state it means no audio will be added to that track. Most likely you have an unlinked audio track. I hope this brief bit of info helps you figure out what audio ends up where in the Timeline.
Regarding recovery, you could try the AutoSave Vault. Go back to a date and time that is before things went wrong and open that project.

  • AVG problem with sqlite tracking cookies

Every time I open Firefox I get an AVG warning about tracking cookies in Sqlite. I can't clean these cookies. AVG deny that there is a problem with AVG, so how can I fix this? I'm fed up of it and on the verge of going back to IE just so that I can open my browser without a stupid banner coming up.

I too have been exeriencing this problem for the last week now, and am getting extremely frustrated with having to delete the cookies EVERYTIME i open the Firefox browser. Sometimes AVG detects two of the sqlite tracking cookies, at the same time. When prompted to clean them, i have, only for AVG to give me a message that it has been unable to disperse of them. Then, i tried adding them to the exceptions list so that they could be ignored, again, they still kept popping up. I've opened up the location they are too be found in (AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\zof3e2jk.default\cookies.sqlite), and deleted it myself. This is however, all of the login details history you have kept on websites, as when i restarted Firefox, i had to retype my login details on every website i visit. I've never had problems with AVG until now, but from what i have read on the AVG forum, it is yet another bug with the latest 2011 version. My advice...stick with Firefox, and get another anti-virus program until avg can provide a more stable version.

  • Problem with song tracks order

I seem to have this problem with only one album. Even though each song in the album has been correctly identified by its track number it still shows up in iTunes in the wrong order. This is especially annoying because the album has gapless playback and since all the tracks are in the wrong order I can't listen to it as I normally would.

Yeah... same thing happened when I downloaded Season 2 of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. They all transfered over fine, but in complete wrong order. *****, because the show follows a serial time-line and now it's all messed up.
    Anyone help?

I purchased two CD's and both have problems with some of songs jumping tracks.     It does this on my computer and on the Ipod.     How can I redownload the purchases?

You would have to put all of the music on one computer.
You cannot sync music from two computers to your iphone, it must all be on one computer.

  • Compressors with Stereo tracks

I've been recording solo steel string guitar with 2 mics and panning one to the left and other to the right. I think I've sorted out most of the phase issues this brought up with some better mic placement.
Once recorded the levels of each track peak at about -14 or -15.
the song is a fingerstyle tunes with lots of dynamic changes.
I've been messing around trying to smooth a bit of the peaks and bring up the overall levels with the "Silver Compressor". Now the loudest peaks are about 5.8 to 6.9. I have a Silver Compressor on each of the 2 guitar tracks with the same settings....
    attack 3.5ms
    release 98.0ms
    threshold -17.5
The result is the gain meter on the compressors going to about -5 pt -10db and overall more percieved loudness.
    I like it
Question 1. How do those compressor settings sound to you all?
Question 2. What issues do I have with the fact that I'm using an individual compressor on each of the 2 guitar tracks? Something tells me there might be a better way.
Question 3. I've been using the Silver Compressor because I find it easier to use than the regular Logic Compressor. I'm just not sure what all the controls do on that compressor. Any thoughts on if I should try using the regular compressor rather than the Silver?
Question 4. Sometimes I play around with the Mastering Channel Strip Settings on the Output 1-2 track including the preset multiband compressor. Any thoughts on how that might be used on the solo guitar song?
Thanks for all your help and ideas in advance...
    Morris

Q1: If you like it, then our opinions matter very little.
Q2: No issues, really. Maybe if you had lots more tracks going on with lots more plugins runnning you might want to consider sending stuff into the busses and effecting/compressing them that way. Or, you could set up to record your X/Y mic'd guitar onto a single stereo track and add a stereo compressor of your choosing. It would simplify things, which is usually a plus, because you'd just have to adjust one compressor plugin.
If this is what you are doing (your question is a little ambiguous), then maybe experimentation is in order, perhaps recording the L and R to two separate tracks and compressing them diferently would be a nice effect that serves your purposes better, hard to say. But it seems kinda self-indulgent and potentially distracting LOL.
Q3: Maybe read this: http://www.recordingproject.com/articles/article-printable.php?article=6 for a nice guide with audio examples. Or http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/pages/Compression.htm
Q4: I usually slap some sort of multiband on the Output 1-2 for mixdown. I do not mix with it on. I use it to tighten things up at the end--but I do not rule out doing more level adjustments on the other tracks with it on

  • Permissions problems with sound track pro and garage band

I am having a problem with the loops and sounds in Garageband and SoundTrack Pro. When I attempt to use a sound in garage band,  I get an error "an eror occurred   result code = -5000   File = Garageband-Temp-54E281E". When I do a search there are about 58 separate folders with loops or effects in them. If I isolate the one I want to use and change the permissions of the folder to everyone read and write I can use the sound, but I don't want to manually change the permissions for 58 seperate folders. I ran repair permissions using disk utility but that did not fix it. Any suggestions, I have a lab of 22 imacs, if it was just one I would just fix the permissions on it but for 22 separate machines, I would like some automation. Thanks in advance for your help.

I'll also add that I'm pretty sure I used this microphone along with the iMic USB a few years ago when I had my 'quicksilver' Mac G4 and it worked with that machine. As noted above, I've tried it with both a 2 channel and both the mono channel settings in Garage Band; but I am using a 1/4" to 1/8" jack adapter in order to plug into the iMic's 1/8" receptacle. The adapter is stereo to stereo, meaning it has both contacts for r & l. That shouldn't make a difference should it? In my experience if you are using mono equipment (like a single microphone) the sound will still be delivered through one of the two channels.

  • Setup Problems With Fast Track Pro

Hey, to anyone reading this, if there is anyone. I'm new to forum boards and I kind of need some assistance, (of course). I recently, (a month ago?), purchased Audition CS6 and also purchased an M-Audio Fast Track Pro. I'm trying to record vocals on a laptop. I tried to set this up on my own and with manual assistance and I have made little to no progress.  Main issue is I only hear recordings/audio through the left headphone. If someone could, for lack of a better term, baby-step me into setting this up, I'd appreciate it.

Your set-up for the Fast Track is correct.
You are only recording a single channel and you are presumably plugging in the mic into input 1 on the Fast Track.  You are then arming Audition to record a STEREO track, not a MONO track, thus you are only hearing the left channel because you only recorded the left channel.   When recording a single microphone on the Fast Track, have Audition record only a MONO track.  To record a MONO waveform, open Audition and in the upper lefthand corner click on Waveform.  A window will open called New Audio File.  You will see different parameters to be selected.  Audition defaults to STEREO channels.  Change this to MONO and hit OK.  You have now armed Audition to record a MONO file.
If you have already recorded a take that you like, but wish it to be MONO rather than STEREO, then you can open that track in Edit View.  You should see that your waveform has two tracks, with your recording on the Left (top) section and nothing on the Right (bottom) section.  Go up to the Menu Bar at the top of the window, select Edit, then in the Edit Menu select Convert Sample.  In the Convert Sample Type window, you will see a Presets dropdown menu at the top.  Open that and select Convert to Mono (Average).  Now, before you click on OK you must go to the Channels section in the middle of the window and click on the little white triangle next to Advanced.  You will see percentages for Left and Right.  Make the Left 100% and the Right 0%.  Then click OK at the bottom of the window and your waveform will now be a MONO waveform.

  • 4.1 update - problems with stereo connectivity

I have a high end audio system in my car... Focals, w7, etc etc. It is ran by a avhp3100dvd. Since I updated my iphone4 to the new 4.1 OS, I get random static through the audio system. It is sporadic, lasts 3 to 4 seconds, goes away, and then comes back. It worked earlier today before I did the update. My itouch works fine, so I know it isn't the radio. I restored the iphone4 AGAIN (a clean restore btw, so I just spent an extra hour organizing my iphone again) just to see if the upgrade was corrupted somehow. I still have the same issue. The phone plays like normal with headphones, it is just when the iphone is synced to the radio.
I have seen numerous complaints about the new OS not being compatible with radios after updates. I was very hesitant to purchase the iphone4 because of this, but I tested it before I bought it, and everything worked with 4.0. That is the ONLY reason I purchased the iphone4. I felt like apple forced 3g customers to upgrade after the 4 update made them unusable. 3g phones need to be fixed with the new operating system and PLEASE FIX connection problems with other devices.
It doesn't make sense why an update would mess up connection capabilities with other devices (isn't that a step backward?). The reason why I have purchased apple devices (iphones, macbook, itouch, ipad) is because they typically just work. That hasn't been the case lately. Thanks for reading my rant

Thanks for the rant but it's probably better to contact Apple about this. We don't work for them.

  • Problems with audio track through US-122 in Logic Express

    Hi,
This may be a completely stupid question, but I'm having problems with recording through my Tascam US-122 in Logic Express. I can't get anything to register on the level meter in Logic Express (neither direct input nor microphone input). However, I can get the input from the Tascam to register in the system preferences menu outside of Logic, and can get the built in mic on my IBook to register inside of logic. Does anyone have any ideas for me to try out? I've looked in the manual and I'm supposed to be getting the Logic Express training book soon, but I was hoping to record sooner than that.
    Thanks!
    Shawn J

Sorry, ignore the above. I needed to enable record before the level would show up.

  • Having problems with 4 track preamp

I have just gotten a Yamaha MW10c usb mixing studio hoping that I would be able to record at least 4 channels live into garage band. However I have followed the instructions and garage band with only recognize the first to channels. Is this a problem with garage band or my mixer. The manual says that I do not have to install any software. That it should just be plug and play. Are there multi channel preamps that work for garage band and can record up to 4 channels at the same time?
    Thanks
    Dunbar

Most usb audio interfaces are only 2 channel out. The only usb mixer that I heard does multichannel out is the newest Alesis multimix usb 2.0.

  • Problems with stereo audio tracks

I'm recording from an external synthesizer, and it sounds really weak when I record in mono. So I switch over to stereo, where I record on Audio 1 on the track list (as it now represents the left side, while Audio 2 on the track list represents the right).
After recording, I copy the recorded region onto Audio 2 to create the stereo effect (i.e. Audio 1 = left side, Audio 2 = right side). Audio 2 is controlled by stereo object "Track 1-2," which is set in Audio 1 (where I originally recorded the external sound).
    But...
My problem is I'm not hearing any sound on the right side, or at all when I copy and paste the recorded region from Audio 1 to Audio 2. I don't know what I'm doing wrong or if I have to set the parameters so that Audio 2 actually plays the right side of my "Track 1-2" stereo set-up from Audio 1.
    Thanks for any help!

1: if something is stereo record it as stereo and if mono record as mono
2: recording mono and changing it to stereo won't make sense because its the same channel on two sides it'll still sound mono
3: recording stereo then switching the channel to mono is not a good idea because if the the both sides are phase then it'll sound weird because you'll only get the both soft sides in the centre or both loud sides in the centre
I'll rather use direct mixer plug-in for this type of job or I'll force split the stereo file then put them on two separate tracks then centre the pan on both tracks
my English is not that good but i hope you got what i mean
or get a cable which is 1 stereo 6.5 jack to two RCA left and right or two Mono 6.5 Jacks left and right
this way headphone out from the external gear to two channels (unbalanced) in your interface to logic
then select which input they are then hit record
doing this way will make sure anything you hear in headphone is what ever you'll record

  • Problems with stereo image

The stereo image of the files playing in itunes is not 100% accurate, is there a way to fix this issue (i.e. third party plug in or so)??
Here's my problem: first of all I'm a musician/producer with pro equipment and I'm trying to copy a few sequences into the ipod. That means that I only need to hear one side of the stereo file, as the other side is the click going into the drummer's headphone. However, if I play the track outside of itunes it sounds fine, if I open it with itunes to copy it into the ipod I hear the L side (click) bleeding into the R side (sequence).
    How can this be fixed?
Thanks and sorry for the long post.

You're right, I didnt even know there was such a thing in the preferences. Anyways, now it's working on itunes, but when I copy the tracks to the ipod I still get the same problem. Does the ipod have the sound enhancer too?? Where do I turn it off?
    Thanks
