Problems with Parallel Port on Reboot

Hi,
I use labview to drive my stepper motor connected to the parallel port
on my Win98 machine. The motor takes a step for every clock pulse sent
out on a particular pin on the port.
Although my problem is not directly related to labview, I was hoping to
get a solution. Every time I reboot my computer (at least once a day,
it seems) the computer sends a series of clock pulses to the port,
moving my motor several hundred steps. I cannot tell if it's a regular
series of pulses or just random noise.
Is there a way to disable the lpt port or otherwise prevent spurious
noise being sent out to my motor when rebooting my machine? Or when
labview is not running?
Thanks,
Scot

Windows likes to check for plug-n-play devices when it boots up. You may want to set up a relay/interlock gating system that only allows pulses to reach the motor driver when one digital line is high and another other digital line is low.

  • Problems with USB port and song transferring;

Hi! I just got an iPod and I am having problems with it. My computer doesn't have a Hi-Speed USB port, even if it's 9 months old. Some of my friends don't have it either but they still are able to transfer songs onto their iPod. For mine, it keeps saying "Do Not Disconnect." I waited for 5 hours last time I got it and it still isn't working.
I also updated my iPod software today and the iPod icon isn't appearing on the bar to the left in iTunes. I'd really appreciate any help on this! As well as if I really need to do something about the ports or if it could function like this normally.

  • If you're having problems with USB ports, read on...

i'm reading that alot of people on here are having problems with their front (or top) usb on their cases not working with their k7n2 boards.  i have come across the correct solution to this problem in one of the posts (after having solved the problem on my own), however noone has posted the solution by itself on this forum so everyone can easily see it.
The trick is to make sure that pin 10 (at least on a K7n2 delta-L), the pin labeled USBOC (USB Open Connection), is wired to NOTHING.  If the connector to your front usb ports is fused into one giant connector and it HAS a wire that will connect to this pin (labeled GND2 or Shield or something), CUT THAT WIRE.  Pin 10 on JUSB2 (at least on a K7n2 delta-L) must be OPEN.  If this pin IS connected to something (even if it is only GND), the motherboard will think something is connected to this usb port and you will get many unknown devices listed in your windows device manager and the rest of your usb ports may or may not work.
As a general rule of thumb, if a pin on a motherboard is labeled OC for "Open Connection" and you wire something to it, you're asking for trouble.
If you cannot understand this you should not be attempting to wire a motherboard in the first place.
Here is a picture to go along with this discussion.  If you cannot see this picture, I am sorry for it has probably been removed from the place I posted it online as I cannot attach pictures physically to this post.  If someone here has a way to permanently host this picture and post it to this thread permanently, that would be wonderful.
In summary: all usb ports/headers have only four pins associated with it (VCC, USB+, USB-, GND).  If the connector (whether it's one big connector or individual sockets) to your front/top usb port has 5 sockets, don't connect the 5th socket to anything.  That goes for any case/motherboard combination.  This is what i'm talking about above.  I have no idea why motherboard and case manufacturers have a 5th pin involved in any way on either the pin or socket side.  It is not used for usb.
EDIT:  I just noticed this has already been discussed in the trouble shooting guide in the above sticky post.  oh well, now we have a pretty picture to go along with it (i hope).

    :-D)Hello guys,
as promised I come back here to give the results of my tests... and I have to say that you saved my day (even if I had to open back 60 secured cases).
So the solution was the right one, when I unplugged the "ground" end of the front USB connector cable from the USBOC pin, those connectors finally worked as expected with USB 2.0 compliant devices.
So thank you really much for this very usefull information !
And even if maybe it's not only MSI's fault, I still believe that more information on those connectors in the user's manual would be really usefull (who knows what USBOC means except a few people and who could imagine that pluggin on it a "ground" cable would make it unserviceable ??). And who ever saw a user's manual bundled with a case ?? it's pretty unusual
Hope that someone at MSI will read that and take it into consideration, not for me (because now I'm aware) but for the thousands other consumers that will feel a little bit "annoyed" with that issue. I don't think that adding one line about it in user's manuals would be so much expensive
But I'm quite lucky myself... being able to understand and write english (even if I still have some progress to do  ) gave me the possibility to find the solution... but a lot of my french fellows can't do that... and there's no french forum here... How can they do ? They rely on user's manual
    Best regards,
    Nicolas

  • Problem with COM port opening

I made an application using COM port to dialog with a microcontroleur and i have some troubles with the opening of the port. i developed it under window XP pro and labview 6.1 and i have no problem when i launch my application on an XP PC having labview installed or on a window 98 PC without labview (just the runtime engine). But when i launch it on an XP pc with only the runtime engine, it seems to launch correctly but in fact, there is a problem with the COM port opening. The menu allowing to chose the port number is inactive and has no effect, like if the software wouldn't recognize the material port on the PC. And consequently, nothing happens when the dialog should start.

Is the VISA run-time engine installed? I don't understand why it would work on the win98 machine unless you have an older installation of it there.

  • Internet problems with Parallels.

Windows 7 shows that I have an active Internet connection, but I get the error "Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource is not responding." My network settings for Parallels are "shared" and I've installed Parallels Tools.
I'm running the trial version of Parallels to see if it's worth buying. The internet worked just fine the first couple of days, but suddenly it won't load any webpages or even show my shared folders. I uninstalled and reinstalled Parallels but that didn't fix it either. I have no problems with my connection on the Mac side.
    Any thoughts?

  • Wee Problem with Parallels Desktop and the Westmere Mac Pros

Just got my new Westmere 8-Core Mac Pro last Friday, and spent the last four days in agony.
I used Migration Assistant to transfer over my accounts from my old Mac Pro, but it crashed hard -- so hard that I had to reformat the hard drive and do a clean install of the system. So I decided to do a clean install of all of my programs as well, and the Westmere crashed on the Parallels Desktop installation. And, again, it crashed so hard that I had to reformat the hard drive and do a clean install of everything all over again.
Today, I read a review of the Westmere Mac Pros in Macworld (http://www.macworld.com/article/153704/2010/08/quad8_core_macpro_2010.html?lsrc=top2), and learned:
We ran into a problem running Parallels on the Westmere-based Mac Pros, so we could not complete the Speedmark 6 suite of tests. When booted into 64-bit mode (as the new Mac Pros do by default) the systems would crash with Parallels installed. Booting into 32-bit mode would allow the systems to start up, but we still couldn’t use Parallels. We eventually tried a complete wipe and reinstall from the Mac Pro’s systems disc and downloaded the very latest version of Parallels to eliminate any other potential problems, and had the same issue. Apple and Parallels are aware of the problem and assure me that Parallels is working diligently on a fix. The application worked just fine on the new quad-core Mac Pro with the Nehalem processor.
Hoped I saved somebody some time.

    Hi akapod,
Looks like they may have the fix out.

Sorry, that didn't work.  I get no drop down menu from the Hot Sync Manager for the Serial Port.  What comes up often is:  "The selected port, COM1, is not available at this time.  Hot Sync Manager will open the port when it becomes available."
Could it be the Norton Antivirus Firewall that is preventing the Hot Sync Manager to open the Serial Port?  Just a thought.  Thanks for your help.

  • Comms with parallel port

    Hi
I am trying to send  a command to a printer via the parallel port, but am having no joy. I have set  the BIOS printer port setting to 'Bidirectional', and created a small test program as  attached.
I need to send an  <ESC>A, 10 (hex), <ESC>Z in order to stop the printer during a print  run,  and an <ESC>A, 11 (hex), <ESC>Z to restart the printer. I have used the functions found in the example, but maybe I'm misunderstanding the functionality of the functions?

    Hi Alan,
I was working on a windows 2000 sending a signal to the parallel port using a Out Port.VI and it worked fine because the format of the computer was a 378 like you have in your program; however, when i tried to use this program in a windows vista, this didnt work because the format of the parallel port of this computer was BD00-BD07, which is not written in 16 bit like your program. In order to solve this problem, i used VISA Write and it would automatically send the signal to the parallel port. Try using VISA and you shouldnt have any problems. I will send you an example VI so you can see how i used it. I also modified your VI using VISA instead of using Out Port.vi. It has an error because part of the file is missing but this should get you started. If you have any questions dont hesitate to ask.

  • Will there be any problems with Parallels Program if I upgrade to Maverick OS?

I have OS 10.7.5 on my intel iMac desktop and MacBook Air with Parallels 9.0.2 running Windows XP.  Will there be any problems if I upgrade to Maverick OS? Do I have to do anything special because of the Parallels side when I upgrade?

You shouldn't have any issues, since Parallels v9 is the current version.  You might want to visit the Parallels support forums to see if users there are aware of any issues.  I know I upgraded my MBP from Mountain Lion to Mavericks and I had no issues with my Parallels v8.  A short while after the update to Mavericks, I did upgrade my Parallels to v9, but I wasn't really having any problems on v8 either.

  • Problems with parallel compression

I'm having some problems utilizing parallel compression on some drums. Here's the setup:
-9 tracks of audio (mixed, EQ'ed, etc. ) outputting to a Bus, which serves as the master drum fader
-master drum fader has very light EQ and compression, and a limiter
-audio tracks also have a (post-fader) send going to a separate bus for parallel compression
-parallel comp bus is heavily compressed, slightly EQ'ed
-plugins used are all Logic's: limiter, compressor, channel EQ
The problem is that as I increase the parallel fader, the bass drum loses it's punch. It almost sounds like some kind of phase cancellation. The snare seems to lose a little presence as well. The cymbals, on the other hand, sound great. So if I leave the parallel fader very low, I'm not getting the compression I want out of the cymbals. Any ideas?
I'm still pretty new to mixing, and definitely to parallel compression, so it seems likely a problem with my plugin settings. I got some advice from a friend of mine, and tweaked a little from there, but here are the settings of the compressor on the parallel bus:
    Threshold: -17 dB
    Ratio: 10:1
    Attack: 10 ms
    Release: 11 ms
    Knee: 0.0
    Peak Mode
    Thanks for your help.

I guess I'm just a little stuck on the usual parameters (ratio, threshold, attack/release, etc.), though I realize the Warmer doesn't operate in quite the same way.
Right. It is a bit confusing and there are only some controls which have usual plug-in equivalents. Look at VM as being a limiter, which in turn has an infinite ratio. The compression element of VM (as I understand it) affects the amount of compression underneath the ceiling. So the knee control affects that compression depth, rather than the compression curve, related to threshold, as seen in conventional compressors, like a sub threshold adjustment.
the knee sets the amount of compression applied to signals leading up to the ceiling, right?
Exactly. The ceiling, you would think, is the limiter ceiling for output a bit like Logic's adaptive limiter output. It is really a way of moving the output level to something other than 0 dbFS, and works with the saturation settings on the VM's back panel, and the way it handles the input side of VM. So I usually leave the ceiling at zero (as it's not being used for mastering) and change the drive, knee and saturation to taste. So the metering behavior you see, to me makes sense. Compare with pre and post, and adjust the drive, and it is more visually in step. I think it's more like a threshold than anything else. The knee is also affecting VM's make up gain, which you can balance with the drive knob to get the right amount of coloration.
Drive is, as you say, just an input level.
I always have FAT on. When used on drums, I change the rear saturation to less high and bass, more mid. I also change the freq. settings to be more active in the low mids, but this changes for each kit. I usually have brick wall and Auto (for release, not auto gain) on, with release set at X1.
The Mix control is mysterious to me. You would think that it works so that you can change the mix between an unprocessed input to the VM output and therefore use it on a drum submix without a separate bus for parallel compression, but it sounds different to me (and much better) when I use it on a bus set to 100%, so that's what I do, with some EQ before VM.

  • Headphone connection sporadic and must twist to get good connection; is there connection problems with connection port?

More times than not the headphone i purchased from Apple Store (Nike) and others do not get good connection in port of the nano so cannot play; if i twist it in the port it might hit and get sound but then can loose it with movement and/or get static; any history/problems with ports allowing good connections with headphones; it is surely fully pushed in; thanks

Thanks for the quick reply.  The use of a heat gun to loosen the adhesive complicates matters, but your point about the 4G's unsoldered jack brings it back into the realm of a possible self-fix.  I've read the notes by other users--some were successful with pipe cleaners or pressurized spray cans or both.  I'll try that first before going for disassembly.
The first repair place that comes up when I Google "iPod repair" prominently features headphone jacks for the iPod Touch, suggesting it's a pretty popular item.  Maybe the placement of the port, or even its angle, is a receptacle asking for trouble.  If I get it to work again, I'm going to look for a leather, or folio, type of covering that doesn't leave that hole exposed.
