Pulldown removal in AME?

Can AME removal pulldown from Canon Vixia .MTS 24PF files?  These files are not real 24p unless pulldown is removed; they are in a 60i wrapper.
I note that in the AME settings we can change the frame rate.  So if I were to select the 23.98 frame per second setting, would this effectively transform my files in true 24p?  After doing this conversion in AME I cannot see any interlacing in the picture, whereas I could spot interlacing in the original .MTS file.
Thank you.

yes AME can do the pulldown by hardcoding it to 23.98 (your source is most likely 59.97i not 60i since it's NTSC).
BUT....
pulldown is all about which frame to throw away.
24p encapsulated in 30p has frame doubling. (ie pullup) Every 4th frame is doubled. thus 4 frames becomes 5.. ie 24 becomes 30.
24 FRAMES A:B:C:D played at 30 FRAMES     A:B:C:D:D:A:B:C:D:D:A:B:C:D:D
BUT.... if AME doesn't choose the RIGHT frame to throw away you COULD get
WRONG      Throw away A:          B:C:D:D:B:C:D:D
WRONG      Throw away B:          A:C:D:D:A:C:D:D
WRONG      Throw away C:          A:B:D:D:A:B:D:D
RIGHT          Throw away D:         A:B:C:D:A:B:C:D
So I'd suggest that you do a test run and if it doesn't flicker you're good. If it's wrong oh you'll know - it's aweful.
If it DOES FLICKER then drop it into a 23.98 Sequence in Prem Pro and export from there. - Then you can INTERPRET FOOTAGE to change that behavour.

  • 30 to 24 frames, pulldown removal issue

I'm working at this animation place. The animators work with the live footage that comes in to composite their animations. So I have to convert each shot from 30 to 24 fps (it comes in at 29.97)
So far the workflow has been export each scene using the current settings of 29.97 10 bit uncompressed non drop.
bring that qt into after effects.
interpret footage > conform to 30 fps > guess pulldown removal (WWSSW) then i'd render out a targa sequence at 24 frames, and everything works out nicely.
    until,
I'm working on a sequence that when exported to QT
shows some scenes with split frames on EVERY frame.
so the remove pulldown feature in AE fails because of this.
I then discover that some of the scenes in question
have time remapping applied to them (frames blended).
Does anyone have a fix for how to handle footage with
time-remapping applied, so it exports with proper 3:2 pulldown?

Cinema Tools can remove the pulldown in one step from the 29.97 files. I doubt this will work right at all with time remapped clips though, so you need to go back to the originals, then time remap them back after they've had their pulldown removed I'd think.
You are right about the clips... need to do them one at a time. I suppose you could try a sequence, but the result would end up being one long clip... might not want that?

  • ADVANCED PULLDOWN REMOVAL - Problem with 60 Hours of Material

After I capture about 60 hours of material and worked for the past 3 months in a 90 minutes documentary I realized that the material was shoot in 24P advanced and was not captured in advanced pulldown removal mode! What should I do now? Should I do an online of the 90 min sequence with advance pulldown removal? What should I expect to happen? Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

I am delivering an EDL to do an online in HD for later on blow it up to 35mm. I just don't want to fix problems in the online because it'll take time therefore MONEY. I was thinking on recapturing the master sequence in my machines at advanced pulldown removal, fix any problems and then export the EDL to go to the online.

  • Advance pulldown removal problem

There is a bit of info i've found about similar issues but nothing covers my scenario. I captured dvx100a 24pa footage-- but without the advance pulldown removal selected. The clips therefore all had frame rates of 29.97. I then went to tools and added the "*remove advance pulldown*".
Two different things happened to my clips. It's corrupting some clips and not others. Some worked and changed to 23.98 fps. Others instantly went offline and when I tried to reconnect the media from the capture scratch I get this:
"*File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown*" and I can't reconnect the media--that still plays fine in quicktime from the capture scratch. I have to re-digitize all the random clips that this happens to.
I'm wondering if it might be a fps and timecode issue-- or a codec issue. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks.

Think I figured it out. There was a duplicate folder with the media files on two hard drives and FCP may have been trying to reference both. Deleted one folder and files went offline then when i reconnected the media and applied "remove advance pulldown" it worked this time.

  • Audio goes missing after advanced pulldown removal

Anybody come across this? I can't find anything in the forum about it.
I shot 24pAdvanced on my DVX-100A. Captured everything as 29.97 NTSC DV in 20 min segments. I do a DV Start/Stop Detect to get markers placed, then do an advanced pulldown removal and edit on 23.98 timeline. I've got about 100 hours of footage, and have been going along quite smoothly on about 80 of those hours.
Recently however, some clips mysteriously lose their audio after the pulldown removal! Both audio tracks are still there, but they are flatlined. All except for the first 4 or 5 seconds actually. That much audio is present. Then the waveforms show it just flatline. Recapturing the tape replaces the audio, but then it disappears after the pulldown again!
    Any thoughts would be welcome

  • Interlacing remains after pulldown removal

    Using Cinema Tools 3.1.2.
I am attempting to remove the pulldown after transfer from film to video. All seems to have gone well, except... in the resulting file, there is now 1 interlaced frame every 4 frames. I used the default RevTel settings: F1-F2, New File, Conform to 24.0 (Yes Std Upper/Lower), Fields: AA/Style 1.
Does this sound familiar? What am I doing wrong here? Thanks for any assistance.

    Hi cgtyoder,
Hope this isn't too late, I just saw your post. What you need to do is split the media file in two, either by digitizing separately or using media manager with the copy feature after making subclips, and do a reverse TK on them separately. If you don't have burned in timecode on the transfer (I assume you don't), you'll have to detect which is your A frame by looking at the interlacing pattern. To use the settings you have, your cadence should be (where C stands for clean frame a D stands for dirty frame):
    C (A frame)
    C
    D
    D
    C
    C (A frame)
    C
    D
    D
    C
    C (A frame)
    C
    etc.
Let me know if you need more details.

  • Cinema Tool's pulldown removal and quality

How much quality is lost if you have 24p Normal being run thru Cinema Tools to edit in 24p? When it is transfered to film and video is it really noticable?
    Thanks, Alex

    I read this from here:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/24p_in_FCPnattress.html
-----When “normal” 2:3:2:3 pulldown is removed (in Cinema Tools, say) the DV video needs to be decompressed so that the pulldown fields can be extracted. Final Cut Pro can remove the “advanced” 2:3:3:2 pulldown without decompressing the video, and hence it’s “in camera” quality can be maintained.------
It doesn't seem to make a big difference to this writer because he goes on to explain the advantages of 2:3 as well... I just thought perhaps someone could coment
This is a great website but are his settings correct... i.e. run it thru CT and then treat as advanced?
    Thanks again!

  • Advanced Pulldown Removal

Why can I not always capture APR in Final Cut 5 when it is selected in the capture settings? This applies to batch capturing or capturing on the fly.
Is it a buggy program or is there something I should know?

The only times I've had problems with this is if I've captured multiple formats on one tape and my batch is too close to the other format. I mean, if the run-up is starting in the odd format.
I'd hate to say go in and capture one at a time... then make sure the pulldown was removed and if not, do it manually... under TOOLS.

  • Diff between 23.98 & 23.98 advanced pulldown removal?

kind of confused here, I understand that 23.98 advanced will allow you to edit true 23.98 progressive frames, and if you just use dv 29.97 to import 23.98 footage, it will also work if you want to mix 23.98 and 29.97 footage.....but what is the 23.98 capture preset?

You must have a complicated job dealing with all these different formats and editing routines. I've managed to setup our ad agency as a single-room facility to negate the need for so much transfering, onlining and offlining and other garbage workflows.
But on to your question. I'm a bit confused about the pulldown getting added twice, but OK. A simpler way to avoid it is to keep the DVD content 24P all the time. All DVD Players prefer 24P streams over 60i with pulldown since they can output progressive footage this way. Sending your footage out the kona to a DVD recorder may have seemed simpler, but it just messed things up.
It might have been easier to just make the QT master file in 24P and send it to compressor to make a 24P MPEG 2 stream, than DVD Studio Pro it.
As for your timecode problems, I'm not sure how to help you since most of my workflow (thanks to the one-room setup) makes 99% of timecode unnecessary.

  • Removing Pulldown from 1080i59.94 footage to get 1080p23.976

I have 1080p23.976 footage that is stored in-camera by wrapping the 24p footage into a 60i wrapper, by introducing pulldown in-camera. To edit it, I need to remove the pulldown from the 1080i59.94 footage, with the end result being 23.976 fps progressive. Can After Effects do this? Interpret footage, maybe? Also, I only have CS4.

Since you run AE 9, the codec of the footage could be a stumbling block as well.  If it's not DVCPro HD, you'll probably have trouble with long-gop codecs used in HDV, XDCam and others.  I recommend converting the footage to a lossless or uncompressed codec prior to pulldown removal.

  • How to remove 24pa pulldown?

Hello, my first post as a new CS6 user coming from FCP7. So far I'm loving it.
Here's the thing; I dragged some 24pa footage off a HVX200a P2 card onto the disc then imported to a 1080/23.98 timeline.
All looked great until I applied the warp stabilizer or the C2 lock&load stabilizer plug-in then everything went crazy not stable at all.
I looked at the file properties and it said Frame Rate: 29.97 (24p) and I assumed the 24p was the pulldown removed.
I captured the same fooage through FCP's capture window that has a dedicated pulldown removal button then imported that.
The properties show Frame Rate: 23.976 and the filters work fine.
Can you tell me what I'm missing please?
    Thanks.

The properties on the left is what I imported straight from the disc, the properties on the right are from disc captured through FCP7. Note the frame rates also no idea why I get a data rate analysis on one and not the other.
Thanks for the link and I've already seen it so I did capture the entire contrents.
I know how 24pa works and for that reason I agree and usually always shoot 720/24pn but this is a specific project that wants 1080i/24pa.
I've searched but I can't find an answer to this issue.
    Thanks.

  • Footage imported 720PN, Didn't remove pulldown, Fix in Compressor?

Hi, if you know this, you are truly an FCP ninja.
Was unfamiliar with the 720p workflow and simply used Import -P2 footage off of the card. Didn't use Remove Pulldown Box. Seemed simple enough, but now the footage is a mess. It's choppy and sped up. Don't have original files.
I understand that compressor (FCP 6.0.6) has a way to fix this? Is that true? Re-shooting is not an option and days are already gone. Any true Compressor ninjas out there? Please?
    Thank you so much!

Thanks for replying.  I was beginning to think my post would be buried and never seen again.
I am aware of the need in CS4 to do the manual "Interpret Footage" step, which was not required in CS3 when needing to remove 3:2 pulldown.
But unless the 3:2 pulldown cadence information is recorded as part of taking the progressive footage and putting it into a 60i wrapper (i.e. your progressive footage is actually recorded on tape as a 60i signal, but where the frames follow a 3:2 pulldown system), then Premiere would be left to guess at the pulldown timing.
So far from my research, it would appear that a number of first-level prosumer cameras that do the 60i-wrapper method of recording progressive frames onto tape do not record the pulldown phasing information.  That would prevent Premier Pro CS3 and CS4 from successfully restoring the footage to 24p after interpreting the footage.
People say that Sony and Canon are particularly bad about this. Panasonic cameras have not had reports of problems for SD progressive as well as HD progressive pulldown removal - that I know of at least -- so they appear to be consistent among their models for recording 3:2 cadence phasing information.
You mentioned that you are now having problems with your footage.  A couple of questions for you.  What model camera do you use?  And are you using DV or HDV, or something else for your progressive footage?
For example, if you use a Canon XH-A1, do you shoot HDV 24pa mode?  Thoses pieces of information will make the situation more clear.

  • 24pa footage taken offline when pulldown is removed!?

here's my situation. I shot a bunch of interviews using my JVC GY -HD100 and dr-hd100 (firestore hard drive recorder), recording 24pa dv footage. The record function on my dr-hd100 was set to dv recorder and quicktime (this is before I figured out that I could use the new quicktime 24p format). Then I brought all my clips into FCP, and spent a bunch of time separating them into subclips.. w/o removing the advance pulldown... then as I start bringing them into the 24p timeline, I see the little red line come up, and remember that I need to remove the pulldown frames. So I select the clips then choose "remove advance pulldown" from the tools menu... fcp spends some time "verifying the cadence" and when it is done some of the clips are now offline... don't ask me why!
When I "Analyze Clip" for both the files that went offline, and those that didn't it says the same thing NTSC at most quality 23.98 fps etc for most of the offline clips as it does the online clips. Then for a few clips that had gone offline it says "this is not a movie that can be analyzed".
What is stranger is that when I go to "reconnect media" and find the original clip on my hard drive, the name matches and everything but FCP won't let me connect the clip. When I analyze the file on my hard drive by selecting tools>analyze movie>file and selecting the quicktime file on my hard drive it wont even give me an analysis window.
this has to be an issue with final cut, no? I am running 5.1.4
    anyone's thoughts would be appreciated
    peace

    Welcome, Ace.
I kinda do not think that camera uses the advanced pulldown technology when recording 24p. This is something you should scour your camera and firestore manuals for.
Secondly, NTSC is the standards council for 601, Standard Definition tv. ATSC is the standards council for itu-709, High Definition television, although, I've read reports that JVC cams utilize 601 colorspace for some of their "High Definition" video (I've not been able to confirm this independently so it shouldn't be considered gospel). Not that any of this helps your issue.
I do not work with HDV (thank my lucky stars) nor this camera so I can't be the expert here but I would point you in the direction of the capture and pulldown removal techniques used. May want to revisit your procedures.

  • Using a Blackmagic Card to remove Pulldown

    Hi,
We did a test here where we setup our Blackmagic card to remove the pulldown (hardware) from Digital Betacam footage shot in film. The only option that we saw in the preference pane for blackmagic was to select the frame reference (00)-(01)-(02) etc.
In FCP 5.0 we used the blackmagic 8 bit capture presets. We put the fps at 23.98. The grab went fine, the pulldown was removed properly. That was surprising since we thought it wasn't supported, but after several tests we could confirm that it was working properly.
The thing that we realised later was that the timecode in the quicktime file was totally wrong: it was kind of randomly offset + it was in 29.97 fps even though the clip was playing in 24fps. So are we missing a setting here, or it just because the feature is not supported inside FCP5.0 ?
    I can handle the truth.
    thanks in advance
    seb
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Very interesting, as I also thought the AJA was the way to go if you wanted to do pulldown removal. Just to clarify, you were capturing at 23.98p, correct? You just have me a little confused when you say "the clip was playing in 24fps" as 24fps and 23.98p are different settings.
Also, it's the timecode in FCP that's displaying 29.97, right? A little while ago I was in a forum where there was confusion b/t timecode in FCP and the burn in time code. That doesn't sound like what you're experiencing though. Other than the timecode, you say everything look right? No interlaced frames or anything like that? Again, from your description it sounds like this all went fine. My only guess is that Black Magic can remove the pulldown but can't properly deal with the timecode so they say it's not supported. In my limited experience, I captured interlaced, removed the pulldown, and used the media manager to make offline copies. This worked perfectly switching b/t the online and offline versions. Surprisingly, even when I accidentally directed the timeline to reconnect to the interlaced media that I had not deleted yet, I still eneded up at the same place in the footage. So, I'm guessing keeping up with all these timecodes is a tricky matter and perhaps Black Magic is directly their efforts elsewhere.

  • Remove Advanced Pulldown and Reverse Telecine...

    Hey guys,
I have read all the hundreds of postings here about problems with removing advanced pulldown. Some people mention using compressor to get the clips to 23.98. I was happy to find that indeed compressor did get the clips that I couldn't remove pulldown in FCP on to 23.98, and that those clips play on the same timeline as my other 23.98 clips. HOWEVER, the clips that were reverse telecined, then brought into FCP play with a stroby effect... There's weird horizontal lines through them. Anyone know what is going on? I guess I will start re-logging and capturing the clips as shorter clips and then try to remove the advanced pulldown on them (from what I understand FCP can't remove the pulldown if there is a cut within a clip...) but if anyone knows of an easier way to deal with this, let me know. I am working with 50 hours of footage, probably 5 of which I couldn't get the advanced pull down off of, so it's a lot of work! Thanks!

I found this answer to one of the posts about removing advanced pulldown problems:
"Are you certain it's 24PA and not 24P?
You might be able to break it into smaller chunks with QT Pro and try removing advanced pulldown on that, but that's just a shot in the dark..."
    Patrick
Can someone explain how to use Quicktime Pro to break the clips into smaller chunks without going through and re-logging and capturing all over? Although, I already put all the clips that didn't get the pulldown removed in FCP through cinema tools to make them 23.98 too...I suppose this will make it impossible for me to use the QT PRo method...I am losing days of work here making smaller and smaller clips out of this material by logging and capturing over and over so I'm desperate to make sure there's not an easier way around this...
Outside of when you are tranferring to film, does anyone have a really good reason to shoot 24pA on the dvx100? With this project it was definitely a mistake!
