Puppet Tool RT Preview Issue

Since CC 2014, I'm having odd issues with the puppet tool. It works as expected until I get to RAM preview it. The preview happens, but playback only happens at around 37fps (is a 60fps comp) and the distort effect does nothing, YET if I scrub the timeline it is smooth and the warp happens. It smacks of a render issue in the Mercury engine, but I just wondered if anyone else had seen this before? In CC, things were fine (though I would have to admit that I can only recall using the puppet tool in a 30fps comp there, not 60) and now it seems broken.
Thanks in advance,
Ian

After Effects does not use the Mercury Playback Engine. That is a set of technologies that Premiere uses to playback a video stream.
The Mercury Transmit in AE is a technology for sending video to an external monitor, but I would not expect that to interfere with how AE renders anything.
You say you can scrub the timeline and it's smooth. What if you step through frame-by-frame?  If that works, note that it will have cached the frames into RAM. Try invoking a RAM preview again and see if the problem persists.
What happens if you render your comp?

  • Animate using Puppet tool and rotation. Continually rasterize messes it up.

In After Effects CC....Trying to animate a vector arm using rotation and the puppet tool. The animation looks good until I hit the continuously rasterize button on that layer. Then it gets distorted and chopped up. I need it to be continually rasterized so that it is not pixelated.  Any suggestions on how to fix this would be awesome.

I import an illustrator file, select the continuously rasterise switch and apply the puppet pin effect.
I find that AE just doesn't like AI files with the puppet pin - mesh seems to get all screwed up. If you apply any scale to that AI layer, it's even worse. REALLY difficult to work with and to me, it seems like there are some bugs when the source is an AI file - am I wrong?
Your issues are probably occuring because you're not using the puppet pins correctly. This page in the AE help should help explain things. Here's a relevant portion:
Note: Don’t animate the position or scale of a continuously rasterized layer with layer transformations if you are also animating the layer with the Puppet tools. The render order for continuously rasterized layers—such as shape layers and text layers—is different from the render order for raster layers. You can precompose the shape layer and use the Puppet tools on the precomposition layer, or you can use the Puppet tools to transform the shapes within the layer. (See Render order and collapsing transformations and Continuously rasterize a layer containing vector graphics.)

  • Hand tool in preview (in mountain lion)?

I'm missing the hand tool in preview. Is it completely gone or is there any chance to get it back?

I use a Wacom tablet with Maverick, and not sure if this will help you all but you may find a similar fix.
I solved the hand tool / panning issue by going to the System Preferences. On my Wacom prefs, there is an area called "Application". There you must click the " + " button to add the Preview app. After the Preview icon is visible, select it, and then choose "pan/scroll" or similar modifier for one of your pen/mouse buttons.
My Wacom Tablet button for panning with this setting does not work unless I also hold down the "option" button. So it's new programed button + option.
    This is all so specific.

  • Adobe Content Viewer (desktop preview) issues

The Adobe Content Viewer (desktop preview) runs off the bottom of my screen (27") when viewing content from InDesign for the new iPad. Would like to be able to alter window size and be able to scroll down to view artwork at full size. Am I missing something simple?
I've downloaded the latest updates for the folio producer tools as well as the folio panel update.

The Adobe Content Viewer for the desktop currently doesn't preview new iPad (2048x1536) folios properly. This desktop preview issue should be fixed in the next release.

  • 5.5 Crashes when using the pin puppet tool

Hopefully somebody can help me. Every time I try to use the pin puppet tool, I get the same error message:
After Effects error: Crash in progress. Last logged message was <7320> <DynamicLink> <5> 000000001B5098D0
Folloed by a message apologizing for the error and a last chance to save the project (which sometimes saves a blank project).
I wasn't using any large images or doing anything to overload it. Help, please?

Thanks for replying Todd. I do submit every crash report. I have been trying to re-enact my crashing problems and I have only slightly narrowed it down.
I have noticed that the puppet pin tool only crashes my large projects (Illustrator file @ 3840x2160res fit into an AE comp of 1920x1080res with 30+ layers). My projects here at work deal with short animations, but I have made my comp size large so that I can pan around my scenes. I'm only using the puppet pin tool on 1 or 2 layers, but I feel that the program just freaks out because I have so many layers in my shots.
After AE crashes and I reopen it, I don't have a problem with the puppet tool again.

  • RAM Preview issue

    Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone has seen this or can provide some direction for further investigation. This is on a new Mac Pro on which I have just installed FCS
In some projects the RAM preview has no effect on playback performance. After generating a RAM preview, the project will play at the same speed (say 2 fps) and as soon as I pause playing, the green progress bar that indicates project is loaded in RAM disappears or becomes fragmented - without modifying the project in any way. When this happens it also becomes nearly impossible to do additional editing as every simple task (as simple as resetting the play range) can result in the spinning beachball. There was a recent thread on RAM preview issues (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12215113&#12215113) but it appears the problem there was due to a long HDV project. The projects I experience this on generally have a lot of particles or replicated elements, but are standard 720 x 486 resolution projects lasting less than 10 sec. System memory usage is relatively small, less than 4 GB.
These issues arise on a recently purchased MacPro (3.33 GHz 6-Core, 16 GB RAM, ATI 5870). The boot disc is an OWC SSD, and user folders, scratch, etc are on separate hard drives. I installed the operating system on the SSD using the installation disc, and have manually installed all my programs from their original discs. (I initially used migration assistant to bring over applications, but that failed with some applications, so I wiped clean and started over). There have also been some past threads on how different hardware configurations can affect performance, but I don't seem to be doing anything abnormal here.
    What I have done:
    Tested ram using memtestosx
Verified memory usage through activity monitor. The projects I have tested on use up less than 4 GB of system memory
Before each test or comparison I reset preferences.
I do not have this flakey behavior with an older MBP (17" 2.93 GHz Core 2 MBP with NVIDIA 9600) running the same OS (10.6.4) and motion version (4.0.3). Running the same project on the MBP will take longer for the RAM preview to complete, but when it does, the project plays at full frame rate.
The upgrade to a MacPro was mainly for other CPU and RAM intensive applications unrelated to video or graphics, but I expected motion to show a nice performance boost over the MBP on this new machine. Anyhow, any insight or direction for further investigation that I should pursue will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I tried your project (nice, BTW), and yes, 20,000+ particles take some time to render. However, when I did a RAM Preview, I had no problems - after render it played at full speed.
    UNTIL...
I selected the emitter. Then playback went to the pre-RAM-Preview speeds. As soon as I turned off overlays or made sure the emitter was not selected, the playback instantly sped back up to full speed. I believe this is because Motion needs to image the constantly changing outline of the emitter. This means it needs to be re-drawn every frame after Motion determines the extent/size of the 20,000 particles on their random journey.
I think this is backed up by the fact that near the end of your project, there are only a few particles to keep track of and the playback appropriately speeds up. Also, CPU usage vastly increases when I turn on the overlays.
Moral of the story? To ensure the quickest possible playback, turn off overlays (⌘/) or ensure that something like a particle emitter is not selected during playback.

  • Preview issue. Send to iPhoto option is grayed out after Lion upgrade

Preview issue. Send to iPhoto option is greyed out after Lion upgrade.
In Snow Leopard it was an option to send pics from Preview to iPhoto, but now it is greyed out if I right-click on the pic. I have searced and tried everything, but I cannot fix it, so does anyone have a fix for it? Please :-)

I can offer no help but would also like to see this issue resolved.  Firstly, it would be useful to know if this problem is seen by everyone.  When viewing photos in Preview, with thumbnails in the sidebar, right-clicking on any of the thumbnails results in this:
Prior to the upgrade to Lion, "Send to iPhoto" was not greyed out and worked as expected.

  • Quick preview issues

I’m using a late 2008 MBP and SL 10.6.4 with AP3. After importing around 5000 RAW to a new project, quick preview in full screen isn’t working properly. Viewing the photos in full screen at full resolution is not an issue. Only when switching to quick preview, the image disappears and the screen goes black. When flipping through the photos in full screen and quick preview on, the photos flash up for a blink of an eye before the screen goes black again.
What I’ve tried so far is to delete and generate new previews, repair permissions and the library and rebuild the library. However, as a result all projects now have the same issue. Moreover, photos aren’t shared with other (iLife) applications. The projects in the photo browser in Mail as well as the control panel for desktop background are empty. Sharing with iTunes, i.e. syncing photos on my iPhone, doesn’t work (again, projects have 0 photos). Of course, sharing is enabled in AP preferences. I’ve read several articles about this sharing problem but the solutions posted didn’t work for me. As sharing uses the jpg files, I guess this is somehow related to the quick preview issue.
It seems that for some reason Aperture does not read the jpg files. Any ideas what else I can try to solve this? Thanks!

Unfortunately, I do not have a solution for you because I am struggling with a similar problem since the release of AP3. I have also experienced the blink of an eye appearance and disappearance of some previews. Also, sometimes the thumbnails and the preview pictures shown are unrelated, or the previews are scrambled. I have tried every AP2 to AP3 conversion strategy in the book; the result is always the same. Hope Apple finds a solution for this quickly.

  • Puppet Tool in After Effects 7.0?

    Hi Everyone,
I have a question for you.
I am trying to create a 2D animation with after.
I want it to look like tradional hand drawing animation.
I have a character to animate and I wanted to use the puppet tool. The thing is that I have After Effects 7.0 and I cannot find this tool. Does that mean that the puppet tool does not exist on After 7.0.
Please let me know and if you have any other advice to prevent drawing all the images, I'll be happy to hear them.
    Thanks

  • CS 5.5 After Effects Crashes with Puppet Tool

Currently, I'm using a CS 5.5 After Effects and the program keeps randomly crashing when I use the Puppet tool specifically with the message "After Effects error: Crash in progress" and says it created a copy of my last save.
    Computer Specs:
    Mac Pro 1,1
    Mac OS 10.7.5
2 x 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon
    7 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    250 GB SSD - 60 GB available
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
Please be specific, so I may understand the problem clearly. Thank you in advance.

Understood. After repeating this process a few times today CS 5.5 AE crashes after using the Puppet Pin tool when applying more than one Starch point or adjusting the first starch point. This is a repeated cycle. I addition, I'm using a plug-in called DUIK with puppet tools to create inverse kinematic arms. Below is a step by step process with a picture of the  error/crash reports at the end.
For the Right Leg I applied Four Puppet Pin Points with all excluding the Toe Point used as a IK applied from the DUIK plug-in. The Amount of Triangles is 600 w/ 0 Expansion
I apply a Starch point at middle thigh. Amount 100,  Extent 94.  In one case at this step, adjusted the starch point a few times and AE crashed.
I adjust the Thigh Starch Point to Amount 12, Extent 94. When I go to apply the next Starch point at the middle Calf, AE Crashes every time.
These two windows pop up. The text is very long for the crash report so this first image is the top.
This is the bottom of the Crash Report.
Here is I believe to be the same crash report, but gets sent to Adobe. May have more detail. Top of the Report.
    Bottom of the Report
I've used this same plug-in before with many puppet pin points, but no starch pin points however I've seen examples of people using the starch points with the plug-in before so i know its possible. I've done complex puppet tool projects with both tools for muscles and bone movement before with no problems, but that was in CC 2014 AE. Please let me know if you need anymore info or details to help me understand my problem and solution. Thank you in advance

  • RAM previewing issue

    Hi,
I'm working in After Effects CS4, and I'm having a problem when I try to RAM preview short sections of an animation project. The RAM preview keeps stopping before it reaches the end of the work area, and beginning again. I'm pretty new to the program, but I've also noticed the little green bars that, I believe, tell you if the section has rendered/processed always have little gaps in them. That may be related. I don't know.
Does anyone know what may be causing this RAM previewing issue?
On a side note, I'm using After Effects on a Macbook (not a Macbook Pro), and I'm wondering whether this problem may be due to the Macbook not being sufficient for After Effects and CS4 in general. (I had originally intended to install the program on my 2004-era G5 tower, but it wouldn't install After Effects CS4 because apparently the program won't work with PowerPC processors, only Intel ones. At least that's what I was told.) Anyway, I've wondered whether the RAM previewing issue may be due to the Macbook not being enough computer for After Effects/CS4. My Macbook has a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 and 106 GB of available space.
Any insights on the RAM previewing issue and whether my Macbook isn't a suitable computer for these programs would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a lot,
    Neil

From the theoretical specs there is nothing that speaks against your notebook. Apparently the biggest hurdle for some users is to get it to run in the first place, but now that it runs, it's safe to say that you will be able to use it properly. Of course, to let truth have its way, you will become slightly peeved at a point and get that yearning for a new machine, when you use more functions and your projects become more complex. Especially the only 2GB RAM will then often become a show stopper and you will really hate Adobe when one of those dreaded "Could not creat X x Y buffer" or similar out of memory warnings pop up. Still, no need to rush. Take your time and see, if AE is even everything you thought it would be and then make clear, structured plans for getting a new computer. You wouldn't wanna spend another 2000 bucks on a spiffy machine just to run AE once a month.

  • Expression with Audio Amp and the Puppet tool

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could give me a hand trying to figure out if an expression would work to accomplish the animation I am after.
I have a music file converted to Key frames based on its amplitude. I have another layer with the puppet tool mesh on it. What I am after is having the character dance to the music. I was curious if I could set up an expression so allow it to detect if the amplitude is greater than a value and move the deform position to a specific value (example: When the amplitude is greater than 15 [Drumbeat] the foot will touch the ground).
I was worried if I did this the Dance would be jerky as I have this in mind for one of the feet:
    effect("Puppet").arap.mesh("Mesh 1").deform("Right").position=
    if (Other Layers amplitude > 15){
    position(5,5); (**position at ground**)
    }else if (Other Layers amplitude > 15){
    position(10,10); (**position at knee**)
    }else{
    value;
I know this formula currently will not work. But could a formula written do this type of movement in line with the music? Would the movements between the key frames be smooth or would the movement be jerky from one spot to the other without interpolation ?
If anyone could point me towards some information or knowledge regarding expressions and making objects "dance" I would be very much appreciative. Thanks.

Conditional statements are always "jerky" - it's the nature of the beast. A branching state can only have an x number of fixed values, but none inbetween. You'd have to create different code that measures the actual temporal distance from a trigger keyframe and modulates the interpolation, contained in a loop. Depending on the density of the cues, you'd also have to define additional behaviors for how a new beat mixes/ overrides a previous one, how to smooth out ambiguous areas inbetween, flatten inactive areas and a few other things. This can become quite complex. Therefore a better solution may be to rely on available scripts (e.g. nabscript's audio amplitude scripts) or plugins such as Trapcode's Soundkeys that provide a more direct way of dealing with audio-generated data.
