Purging memory in Ppro

While I'm working in Ppro, I see the memory usage gradually go higher and higher, until the programme crashes once it's using more than aroung 2.5gb.
Is there any way to purge the memory, as in AE, to free it up rather than reload the project when I can see it getting high?
Thanks, Linda

Are you using MPEG or AVCHD source footage?
No
Do you have any 3rd-party hardware like Matrox or Aja or BlackMagic?
Yes, the Matrox RTX2 card.
But my forum experience so far is that Adobe blame Matrox while Matrox blame Adobe... and I don't understand either one's argument well enough to respond.
I've worked on an RTX2 CS3 system for a couple of years, and have many Matrox projects, so sadly removing the board from this new CS4 system isn't really an option at the moment.
I'll keeping saving / quiting... maybe 4.2 and some new Matrox drivers will fix it

  • After Effects CC 2014 - Purging Memory Cache

So purging memory in After Effects on my Mid 2010 Mac Pro can take hours on my computer.  I have it set to 72GB right now and purging that is taking 3 hours and 50 minutes.  A co-worker of mine that is on a slower pc running the same version of After Effects purged his 96GB of cache in just a few minutes.  Is this normal on a mac to purge this slow?  Neither of us have solid state drives on  our machines.  I do at home, just not at work.  This just seems ridiculous to have to wait this long to purge memory.  It should be instantaneous like emptying a trash can...

    Kevin,
I’ve reinstalled Adobe AfterEffects CC (version 12.2.1.5) and am still having the same issue with the failure to recognize Quicktime.
    Can you assist?

  • How to purge memory in OSX 10.4.11?

    Dear Reader,
I'm in possesion of a 2005 mac mini G4. (Yes, it's one from the great PPC era).
And long story short, I use this machine as server. To monitor I use the terminal on my Macbook pro.
And i want to be able to PURGE the memory, like I can with other mac's in my household.
To monitor this G4 i use the following procedure:
    In terminal on my MBP:
    ssh -22 admin@ipaddress
I then get prompted for my password
Then I can use commands like: top, netstat, ps aus, kill etc. etc. to view my macmini's current occupations.
However the command: PURGE does not seem to work.
It seems to me, that the purge command was added after OSX 10.4.11. Tiger is the OS which i'm currently using.
On 10.7 and 10.8 macs this command is great. When your machine's memory gets clogged you can easily purge it with this command.
Is there a way to perform such an action in OSX 10.4.11? And if so, how do I do it.
Many Thanks for your help in advance.
Also please excuse me for english is not my native language.
    Kind Regards

  • AE Errors - Memory

    Hi,
I have been experiencing some seriously annoying AE problems.
I'm experiencing these exact same issues on both:
    - iMac osx 10.9.4 3.2GHz Intel Core i5 processor - 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory
    - Macbook Pro osx 10.9.4  2GHz Intel Core i& processor - 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory
It all starts with the error when trying to RAM preview:
Which occurs between the 2nd or 3rd time I try to RAM Preview (Resolution set to Third) after opening my file.
After getting this note I notice that on my activity monitor AE is consuming about 4.67GB of memory
After pressing OK and scrub through the timeline I get this error right away:
After pressing OK this one follows:
After pressing OK this one follows:
After pressing OK this one follows:
I press OK and wither I get the following and AE crashes:
Or I get back to the second error and this Errors Spam loops over and over again until I panic, try to save the file and get this one again
I have no way to either save my work, nor even work! It's like this ae file is completely drown in AE errors.
No matter what machine I work on I will get the same errors over and over again.
1 - I tried to purge Memory and Disk Cache - Problem remains
2 - I tried to work in Quarter resolution - Problem remains
3 - Switching Multiprocessing On or Off - Problem remains
The only thing that fixes it is actually forcing quit on AE and opening again. But after my second or third RAM Preview it gets the same errors over and over again.
I am out of ideas, does anyone knows how to fix this?

    Hi Mylenium,
    thanks for your reply,
Not so sure about the plugins as I do not have any external plugins installed.
As for the Codec, I have no idea how it would influence the workflow.
This problem does not occur while working on lighter AE files.
I've experienced the "RAM preview needs 2 or more frames to playback" error quite often in the past but I can say it could be related to the low RAM on my old mac but I've never experienced such a persistent problem like this one, even our new Mac Pro can't handle it.

  • PPro CS6:  Source Monitor Dropping Frames

    Greetings,
Currently I'm working off an iMac, OSC 10.8.4, 12 GB RAM, with i7, and ATI Radeon 1GB video card.  I haven't noticed it recently until today for some reason, but my source monitor keeps dropping frames like crazy after about 5 seconds of playback.
I've read other threads that recommend lower preview frame res, as well as playback res to 1/4.  I've tried that, allocated more memory to PPro (only 2GB left to other applications, yet PPro seems to only use 1.9GB during dropped frame playback), shut down other proccesses that might be consuming memory, switched PPro to enable better "Performance" in preferences, and rebooted several times.
I realized that it could be the source footage from the start:  1080p 23.976fps TIFF sequence.
How can I get PPro to actually use more than 1.9GB of memory during playback in order to get over this TIF hump?  Or does the real answer lie not in memory, but more processing power?
Not a job-threatening situation, but just curious as to what it takes.
    Thanks!
    -Hunter

Okay, thanks for the additional infor. I've taken note of this issue and will investigate when we return from the company shutdown on July 8.

  • After Effects CC 12.2 Purge issue?

    Hello,
I'm really scratching my head here. Using AFX CC hasn't exactly been as smooth as I hoped for. I keep getting “hick ups” both during
previewing and rendering. It's always one frame that messes up. It seems that AFX is “collecting” the wrong frame at the wrong time.
A straight Purge memory isn't solving the issue, but if I Purge All Memory and start previewing the precomps from the very first one AFX
seem to get it right. I have a relatively simple master comp set up (using Element 3D) with three layers of precomps in it. I've spent the
last few hours trying to get a 18 sec sequence to render properly, which it also did until I now changed the color on the 3D Element logo
in the composition. From then on it's only been frustrations. Any tips are highly appreciated. Thanks.
    Kind regards,
    Terje Rian

    Hello,
Thanks for replying. My CC software is up to date pr 18th of Aug 2014.
Version 13? I'm not sure what you're referring to?
My OS version is 10.8.5. I use a Mac Pro 2x2.4 GHz 6-core Intel Xeon with 32 GB Ram 1333 MHz DDR3.
My AFX cache disk is a Samsung 840 Pro SSD 512 GB disk.
I'm not using other effects in this particular comp.
    Thanks.

  • [Cisco ACS] Memory Utilization limit

    Hello,
We have 2 CSACS 1121 with Cisco ACS 5.2.0.26.10
The primary server manages 20000+ authentications per day.
    Its memory utilization increases everyday.
    It is now at 83%
    Is there a limit?
What will happen when memory utilization reach this limit?
What can we do to purge memory utilization? (reboot, service restart...)

  • Media Encoder CC x64 not opening

I get the error "Adobe Media Encoder CC has stopped working: A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
I have a GeForce GTX 760 (if that matters).
Media Encoder won't start via After Effects Export or by starting Media Encoder on it's own.

The error I get is: "Adobe Media Encoder CC has stopped working: A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." ... no crash info.
I'm on PC using Windows 7.
The GeForce GTX 760 upgrade was to version 331.93
The stop working message occurs as Media Encoder is loading the Quicktime.prm
I do purge memory and cache before kicking off the export. However, this happens if I'm just opening Media Encoder.
Is their a way to reinstall Media Encoder?

  • Which is the best app to clean my mac? MacKeeper?

i need to know what you recommend me to clean my computer. I have read that MacKeeper is not good at all so i don´t know what should i do.
    thanks

If you have a problem, please describe it, rather than your conclusion as to how it should be solved. Otherwise, see below.
    How to maintain a Mac
    1. Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; all should be made directly from the original data. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
    2. Keep your software up to date. In the App Store or Software Update preference pane (depending on the OS version), you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis.
Keeping up to date is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible. Incompatibility with third-party software is by far the most common cause of trouble with system updates.
    3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, such stuff is useless or worse than useless. Above all, avoid any software that purports to change the look and feel of the user interface.
It's not much of an exaggeration to say that the whole "utility" software industry for the Mac is a fraud on consumers. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
As a rule, the only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for, and doesn't change the way other software works.
Safari extensions, and perhaps the equivalent for other web browsers, are a partial exception to the above rule. Most are safe, and they're easy to get rid of if they don't work. Some may cause the browser to crash or otherwise malfunction.  Some are malicious. Use with caution, and install only well-known extensions from relatively trustworthy sources, such as the Safari Extensions Gallery.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
    4. Beware of malware. Malware is malicious software that circulates on the Internet. This kind of attack on OS X used to be so rare that it was hardly a concern, but it's now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it — the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness — not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must come directly from the developer's website. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from the web, without your having requested it, should go straight into the Trash. A web page that tells you that your computer has a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with it, is a scam.
In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications and Installer packages that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.
Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most people don't.
    5. Don't fill up your boot volume. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a boot failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Macs that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem.
While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage use and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
If storage space is running low, use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move seldom-used large files to secondary storage.
    6. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” "defragmenting the drive," “running periodic scripts,” “dumping logs,” "deleting temp files," “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," "checking for bad blocks," "testing the hardware," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems, not for prevention.
To use a Mac effectively, you have to free yourself from the Windows mindset that every computer needs regular downtime maintenance such as "defragging" and "registry cleaning." Those concepts do not apply to the Mac platform. A computing device should not be a focus of your attention. It should be an almost invisible tool by means of which you communicate, work, and play. If you want a machine that is always whining for your attention like a neurotic dog, use a PC.
The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it.

  • Macbook Air not starting at all

    Hi,
i have a MacBook Air 11" (mid 2011), purchased in Australia.
the other day I powered it down, unplugged the power, re-plugged, and it won't start at all.
    no beeps, no fan noise.
Green light on the Magsafe connector.
Magsafe power works on a different Macbook.
    checked Magsafe connection for dirt/debris.
    tried with battery unplugged.
    tried with SSD out.
    tried SMC reset.
ordered and installed a new I/O Board.
i left it unplugged for a week.
    still nothing,..
when it has power connected, the top/middle of the keyboard is warmer than the sides, indicating that power is getting in.
Unfortunately i'm in Mallorca, Spain, with no Genius bar available and only 3rd party repair shops.
So before I head off to be quoted an exhorbitant amount to replace the main board, are there any other magic suggestions out there ??
    thanks in advance!

Back up all data before making any changes.
If you've installed something called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and reboot. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
If you've installed an equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and reboot.
If there's no improvement, or if you're not aware of having installed anything that fits the description, post again.

The most extreme examples are the "CleanMyMac," "TuneUpMyMac," and “MacKeeper” scams, but there are many others.
As a rule, you should avoid software that changes the way other software works. Plugins for Photoshop and similar programs are an obvious exception to this rule. Safari extensions, and perhaps the equivalent for other web browsers, are a partial exception. Most are safe, and they're easy to get rid of if they don't work. Some may cause the browser to crash or otherwise malfunction. Some are malicious. Use with caution, and install only well-known extensions from relatively trustworthy sources, such as the Safari Extensions Gallery.
Only install software that is useful to you, not (as you imagine) to the computer. For example, a word processor is useful for writing. A video editor is useful for making movies. A game is useful for fun. But a "cache cleaner" isn't useful for anything. Cleaning caches is not an end in itself.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve. Do not rely on "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
    4. Don't install bad, conflicting, or unnecessary fonts. Whenever you install new fonts, use the validation feature of the built-in Font Book application to make sure the fonts aren't defective and don't conflict with each other or with others that you already have. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. Deactivate or remove fonts that you don't really need to speed up application launching.
    5. Avoid malware. Malware is malicious software that circulates on the Internet. This kind of attack on OS X was once so rare that it was hardly a concern, but malware is now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against malware, but you can’t rely on it—the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness—not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
    6. Don't fill up your disk/SSD. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a startup failure.
A well-designed computing device is not something you should have to think about much. It should be an almost transparent medium through which you communicate, work, and play. If you want a machine that needs a lot of attention, use a PC.

  • MacBook Pro mid 2014

Received my new 2.8 GHz MacBook Pro (mid 2014).  Had a 2.3 GHz (early 2011) MBPro. Note: both have 16 GB RAM running OS X Mavericks 10.9.4.  Nothing drastic in the looks department until you look close.  This post, isn't about esthetics (which are great BTW).  It is to get some idea from other users of their experiences.  Mine came with the optional 1 TB SSD (which after looking around in teardown photos - are like memory sticks rather than the old HD looking device).  I immediately partitioned it to be similar to the way my old 2.3, then having used Carbon Copy Cloner (which I do daily) to mirror my boot disk, I used CCC to make my new boot partition on the 2.8 just like my 2.3.
To my question(s)...  The 2.8 MBP memory seems to be close to the max (16 GB) often.  I do (and have often on the 2.3) had many apps open when I'm doing desktop publishing/web development-publishing, like Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Word, and a number of other running. No appreciable notice in the system slowness.  A few spinning balls here and there but as with the 2.3, could have a ton of apps running.
One spinning ball incident I looked at the Activity Monitor and the RAM was at 13 - 14 GB.  Running Cocktail to purge memory not in use only releases a few GB, BTW.
Since this MBPro is newly on the shelves, probably totally (duh) architecture, etc.  So this may be normal and something I need to get use to unless problems arise.
Anyone think I should back up (not backup) and start over with the OS X  and reinstall a clean/fresh copy on the boot volume and let the installer copy over my apps, folders, configurations, etc.?
BTW - this 2.8 may look a lot like my 2.3 but there's so much different I need to read up on the new stuff.
    Tom

FYI - tried to do a clean install of Mavericks (noted in another thread) and the Installer said "Mavericks cannot be installed on this volume."  What?  Now I wondering if I messed up and should have made a copy of the OS that came on the MBPro if this is a different version of Mavericks.
PS: Memory issue is still there: at this time 12:60 GB out of 16:00 GB with very few applications running.  ?????

help. I have a Google Hangout in 40mins and my sound seems to have vanished. I went to Sys Prefs and it came up with Digital Out....and the Internal Speakers option is no longer there. How do I reboot, or fix this please?

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. If not, the machine needs to be serviced. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by the warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Problem Opening Composition in CS4 on Windows 7 (Worked in Vista) 32-Bit

    Hello,
Merry Christmas! Hope everyone is having a better one than I am at the present time!
At little background information on what I have and what is happening.
My machine is a custom built machine with an ASUS P5KC Motherboard, Intel Quad Core Q6600 @ 2.40GHz, and 4.00GB DDR3 RAM, with a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX.
Yesterday when I was working on this video, I had Windows Vista Home 32-bit installed. All fonts, footage, plug-ins, etc were there, working fine. The project had multiple compositions with quite a bit of 3D elements.
Somehow that machine got infected with a wicked little trojan; cleaned it enough to get my files off of there and make a backup.
I then installed Windows 7 Professional 32-bit, re-installed After Effects CS4, copied all of the Video Copilot Evolution footage, and Pro Scores, Designer Sound Effects, and Action Movies Essentials to the machine; installed the fonts and plugins again.
I then attempted to start After Effects and open the project; all was good -- it recognized that there was 53 items that were not found (unlinked footage). However, once it loaded and it started to load the last composition that I had open (which just so happened to be the fairly large one with 3D elements), it would simply freeze and become "not responding".
I tried this various times; no luck.
I then started a new project, and "drug" the existing project to the new one. This allowed me to open the project without it opening the previous composition. I was then able to re-link all footage and sounds. I then was able to open the other compositions, but the moment I tried to open the composition that I tried earlier, it froze again.
So then I thought, well maybe I can just render it, or make it a proxy, etc.
Both failed. Even when I add to render queue, as soon as it adds it, before I even click start rendering it will freeze.
I thought maybe this was a memory issue; I did some tricks to allow After Effects to use all of the memory, and all cores of the procesor, verify OpenGL state, and allow it to use 80% of the physical RAM on the video card -- still no luck.
I tried cleaning the project, and purging memory; no luck.
I can post the AEP project file for anyone who is willing to help.
Perhaps installing a 64-bit version of Windows 7 would help, but I don't understand what this issue is steamed from.
    Thanks,
    Travis

    Situation Update:
Installed Windows 7 Professional x64 Bit, Adobe After Effects CS4.  No improvement, still same issues.  I then installed the 9.0.2 patch, and tried again -- same result, negative.
    Response to Mylenium:
Thanks for the advice.  It appears as if all devices have the latest drivers on my computer, and are running as they should.  Not sure too much to check on After Effects, but it says everything is "Supported" in the OpenGL dialog on AE CS4.
Also, I'm able to render the main compsotion (which contains other comps in the beginning, and then middle way it has the problematic composition in the timeline) up until the point where the first frame of the problematic composition is.
I beleive it will aid in your assistance to me by seeing the actual project; please see the attachment.
Project number 2 is the initial project, where the "last thing opened" was the problematic composition.  Project number 3 is the "new project" with the old project added.
You will see what I'm explaining once you take a look.
    Additionaly Regarding QuickTime
I just recently downloaded the latest version of QuickTime Player (QuickTime Player 7, Version 7.6.5).  It has installed, and I'm able to play MOV files that I have used in the composition.  I'm unsure as to additional options to check within QuickTime.
    Thanks,
    Travis
