Purpose of Contribute

Hi everyone,
I have to create a content management system for a small
website I'm creating for a client. I was planning on using xml and
php to create it but then I wondered about the possibility of my
clients using contribute to update the site. I've never used
contribute before and wondered if someone could clarify for me what
it's actually used for. I mean I assume that it's used as an
alternative to a content managment system that's built from scratch
right? All they'd have to do is buy the program and they'd be able
to update their site - is this correct?
Would really appreciate any help offered.
Thanks

Hello,
What I suggest is that you download the trial version at
http://www.adobe.com/products/contribute/
and try it out for 30 days.
Contribute is an FTP-based editor, that is installed on the
client-side. The editor is very easy to understand and use, because
users can use the navigation of their own website to reach the
pages they want to edit.
For a very brief demonstration you can also visit
http://www.digital-ink.nl/di_demonstratie.php.
When you use Dreamweaver to build your sites you can add so
called 'editable regions', so your client can only update the
content you made editable. But you can also use Contribute on other
websites without these regions and with pages with (X)HTML content.
You can also borrow that 'editable code' code and use in
another editor: make sure you don't use the name of the instance
twice:
----------------------------------- example code ----- see
body tag for editable code------
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0
Transitional//EN" "
http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;

<style type="text/css">

color: #FF0000;
font-weight: bold;
-->
</style>
<body>
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="content" -->
editable content
<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
</body>
</html>
When you download the trial version maybe you can use this
code to try things out.
Have fun!

  • Templates for New Pages Not Updating

I am a site admin with 7 Contributors accessing my site via
Contribute 3. I have created templates for them to use to create
their new pages. These templates allow them to only edit text; they
cannot update styles or layout in any way. I have noticed that,
whenever I make updates to my templates and resave them out onto
the server, some of my Contributors will pick up the new template
and some will not. Is there any way to force them to pull the new
templates? I have asked them to all Refresh Templates before they
create new ones....they tell me that they have, but they are still
pulling the old template. This causes an issue because, if they
pull the old template, I have to open their page in Dreamweaver and
update the template. Doing this on 30+ pages each month gets quite
tiring and almost defeats the purpose of Contribute for me. Any
suggestions on this issue are much appreciated!

Perhaps - and this is just a guess - the template references
in the pages have got messed up. Something I've noticed is that
template names with spaces in them get messed up by Contribute. At
the top of each web page based on a template is the <!--
InstanceBegin template=".....dwt" --> tag. If the template name
in there contains spaces it will sometimes get URL-encoded, i.e.
spaces become %20, and then Dreamweaver no longer recognizes the
template name as matching the one you're editing. Best practice
seems to be a an all character template file name.

  • Cannot install Firefox extension for Contribute 4

I'm trying out Contribute 4 and right away during
installation there's a bomb: The installer tells me:
    Unavailable Components
These components cannot be installed on your systemat the
    current time
    Contribute Extension for Mozilla Firefox
Version Required: Mozilla Firefox Version 1.0 or later
Version Installed: Mozilla Firefox must have been launched
    at least once
The same thing happeneds when, after the original Contribute
installation, I tried to use the Add/Remove Programs control panel
to Modify the Contribute installation so as to install the Firefox
    extension.
I'm running Firefox 1.5.0.8. Needless to say, I HAVE launched
Firefox "at least once", indeed, many, many times.
What could the problem be and how is it fixed???

for you (IT tech) and because
the 'extensions' folder inside Firefox App has only Read-Only

Another place to check is whether Mozilla Firefox is installed in
the default location c:\program files\. directory.
If you can confirm that you have admin rights and installed
both FF and Contribute 4 and it is located in the default
    directories, just post back.
I can create a bug in your behalf or you can fill out a bug
    request directly here

I have admin rights for the account ("Administrator") on
which I installed both Firefox and Contribute 4. However, neither
is in the default location, as I NEVER install ANYTHING in
C:\Program Files. (This is to make the whole system more granular
for backup purposes.) All my programs (except recalcitrant ones
from Microsoft) go into subject-area subdirectories of lanother
    ogical drive.
And data goes onto yet another logical drive, with most going
into a Documents directory there (which has been designated as what
Windows XP brings up as Documents). Under that Documents I have my
Firefox profile, inside that, the Firefox extensions.
So I'm certainly suspecting now that Contribute 4, unlike
other programs, did not attempt to handle non-default installations
of Firefox (or possibly even of Contribute 4)!

  • Does anyone know a good photo gallery that I can use in contribute and easily add photos and new galleries?

Looking for a good gallery that can be easily updated by the user in contribute. All the ones I have found are too complicated for the general user to add/edit photos

Not that I know of, but you definitely need a relational database for this, and FileMaker is the best there is.
It might be worth asking them if they already have a template for your purpose.
Of course, they also make a simpler and cheaper version called Bento:
    http://www.filemaker.co.uk/products/bento/
I have never used it but it might be worth a look?

  • Every BPC Consultant must contribute for this question.

    Dear Experts,
I am new to SAP BPC.
I have gained basic knowledge on BPC.
I have given a basic presentation on BPC in our company by presenting a demo application with consists of Application have dimensions, Security settings, data uploading, BPFs (Business Process Flows) and Reports & Input schedules & Currency Translation scripts.
Actually, Our Company leads said, u201DWe can also do these features like Reporting & Currency Translationu201D in MS-Excel then what is the use of BPC?u201D.
I did not able to answer this question.
Need a Complete picture on BPC. And what exactly the BPC tool is & how it is different from other tools.
Please explain me what is the Uniqueness & beauty of SAP BPC.
    Really I need expertu2019s answers.
I request all BPC consultants to contribute this question by your valuable answers.
    Thanks for your contribution.
    Cheers,

    Hi Kumar,
The use of BPC is to develop and maintain planning and consolidation platform for an organization to evaluate company performance. When compared with other products, It is a very good product to do planning and consolidation. It is very flexible, user friendly.
It is not just doing reporting and currency translation. You need to develop a platform. Excel is just an interface that BPC uses and currency translation is part of a task. Excel is more userfriendly tool, that way BPC uses all different functions for evaluation purposes. BPC is got ocean of tools and tsks that you can perform for the evaluations.
Using Windows MS Excel reporting and currency translation, that will not produce any data base platform neither any flexibility in evaluations. It is just produces a view of some data at some point of time and it is not a data warehouse as well.
    Make sense...
    Regards,
    Sreekanth.

I am trying to open a template I have created in Dreamweaver
with Contribute to test it out. However, when I try to open the DWT
file in Contribute, it gives me "Contribute cannot edit this type

  • Is precise image editing possible in Contribute?

I designed a site for a client and gave them a guide with
precise instructions for the sizes of images in different layouts.
The problem is, Contribute doesn't seem to allow for *precise*
image editing. For instance, I have a layout which uses graphics at
106x106 pixels. The client has photos from a digital camera that
they need to crop/resize to go into this layout. I can resize the
shorter dimension to 106 by entering a number in the toolbar.
Theoretically, I should then be able to simply crop the image to
106 in the other dimension. But as far as I can tell, there is no
way to crop something numerically, and the width/height fields do
not change dynamically as I move the crop window. So the only way
to do it is visually, by trial and error. Which means I shave off
enough that it's close, and then try to count the pixels as I move
the crop window, and hope I haven't moved it two pixels in one
move, or its UNDO and try again.
A related issue: is there any way for the Contribute user to
change the dpi of an image? They often shoot photos at a higher dpi
for using in print, and it would be nice if they could reduce these
photos to 72dpi in Contribute. The whole point of my recommending
Contribute was so they could update their own webpages just using
this program. If they have to call me to modify images, or purchase
a separate piece of software just to crop/resize images adequately,
then that really defeats the purpose of their using
    Contribute.

Thanks for posting this. I'd not discovered the right-click
menu that allows for cropping, rotating, etc. This seems a very
    useful feature.
Having found it I thought I'd see if I can find a way to do
what you're looking for, but unfortunately I can't find any way to
set the crop width and height either. I suspect that without an
external application, such as Fireworks (pay) or Gimp (free),
you'll not be able to crop the image to a specific size other than
through the trial and error approach you're using.
Also, I could find no way to reduce the DPI of an image, but
to be honest this doesn't surprise me, as this is more of an
advanced feature and Macromedia sell a product capable of this. You
did mention that you recommended Contribute so your client could
update their own web pages, and while graphics are included within
a web page, they are separate files and for the most part will
require a separate application to update them.
My suggestion would be to get a separate application for the
image, but you're not limited to purchasing one. One pretty good,
and FREE, editor is Pixel Editor (
    http://www.iconempire.com/pixel-editor/index.htm)
which should be fine for reducing DPI and cropping, as well as a
host of other features. You could also try GIMP for Windows (
    http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net
    - an open-source product), which is also free and very well
respected in the open-source community. However, both these will
require your client learning a new product, so I concede to your
initial point of kind of defeating the point of using Contribute,
except that you'd be hard pressed to find a similar product to
Contribute for web page design that include the feature you're
    needing.
Hope this helps, even a little.

  • Error message in Contribute on file checkout from Subversion

I have Contribute CS5 and Subversion talking to each other perfectly (I also have my Dreamweaver CS5.5 connected to this Subversion server). I can create a new file in Contribute and save it which checks the file into Subversion, but everytime I try to open either an exsisting file (or the new one I just created) I recieve an error message "There is a mismatch in the version of the file on the site, and the source file. Click OK to choose a version from the Subversion server." I say OK choose the most current version and then recieve another error message "The file in the Subversion repository could not be locked. Contact your admin for details"
Subersion and Dreamweaver 5.5 are working together like a charm (check in/out and locks) but Contribute not at all. I have read and reread the forums (both for Subversion and here) and none of the solutions are quite fit my problem (although I have tried them just to see).
    Any suggestions?
    Here are my details:
Contribute is running on a Windows 7 machine
Subversion is VisualSVN Server running on a Windows 2008 Server (running the Subversion build recommended by Dreamweaver 1.6.17 not the newest build 1.7)
I have a QA server (where we check in and out from) running on Windows 2008 server (all the 2008 servers are running the newest RC builds)
We connect to the QA server via a share

    Hi,
You should create a RDS deployment and then you can set the licensing mode and name in the Deployment Properties.  I'm assuming you only have 1 server for all RDS purposes.  Please let me know if my assumption is incorrect.
    1. Server Manager -- Dashboard -- Add roles and features
    2. RDS installation, Quick Start, session-based deployment, finish wizard and restart
    3. Once the server comes back up log on and let it finish the install
    4. In Server Manager -- RDS -- Overview -- Tasks -- Edit Deployment Properties -- RD Licensing tab, set the licensing mode to match the type of RDS CALs you purchased, and set the FQDN of your RD Licensing server (itself)
After completing the above please test by logging on as a regular user and verify that there event is no longer being logged.  You may also open RD Licensing Manager and see that the RDS CALs are being issued.
    Thanks.

  • Defining the purpose of use in the DTAUS

I would like to contribute a suggestion for improvement on behalf of our clients.
This would be happy to set the SAP Business One, as the purpose of his DTAUS files are built. Currently, the SAP Business One version 8.81 is installed PL05.
    Sincerely,
    Mandy Mäke

    Hi Hendrik,
You are right its not possible to directly navigate between 2 windows of the same component. Even the SAP help says like navigation between windows of the same component is not possible.
But you can however use an workaround strategy as how suggested by Suman Kumar is one of his earlier threads:
    1) Create 2 views and 2 windows and assign 1st view to 1st window and 2nd view to 2nd window. Also create an exit plug for window1 with parameter URL of type string.
Note: when you create windows automatically an interface view will also create with same name.
    2) Create application1 for window1(nothing but give interface1 ) in the same way create another application and assign interface view2.
Then write your logic in the onAction method of view1, call the exit plug of window1 then pass the URL of second application.

    Uday

  • Dreamweaver/Contribute/CSS issues

Anyone run into issues when creating a site with Dreamweaver and an external CSS and having information edited in Contribute add in-line styles? It is a pain in the rear to continually go back and edit out the in-line styles when the purpose of using contribute is to free me up from that type of content editing.
    Any advise would be wonderful.

interesting to find this topic....since I too am having this

"unable to retreive tables from this connection, click on the
'define..." button to test this connection"
then I go to advanced in the create recordset window and get
    the error....

has anyone seen this or know how to fix....please help.

  • How do I edit php pages within contribute

I have a page that I have made PHP.  The purpose is to display different parts of the page based on the subscription level of the client.  So there are 4 subscription levels and 4 section of the page.  Now I want to edit one of the 4 sections which are html code.  It displays the page correctly, however once I select edit the page is recognized php and shows a little box icon and not html.
I use contribute to edit the HTML portions of the page??
    John  -

    Hi,
You can use the option of editing the web page in an external application for making changes in php page.
I had couple of questions - How are you displaying the different sections of the web page? Is it depending on the subscription level of a user - which you are controlling via php? And, is the HTML code in the web page generated by the php code?

  • Contribute CS3 incompatible with Dreamweaver CS3

All my Conribute connections no longer work with DW CS3 &
    CT CS3. Why?
    1. I have correctly set up a remote connection in Contribute.
The contribute connection to the website IP is established.
    2. The FTP connection from DW to the website IP is also
    correctly established and working.
    3. The connection information is identical for both
    applications and verified.
    4. PROBLEM: When trying to set up the Contribute connection
from within DW, the following error msg appears: "Dreamweaver could
not connect to the remote server. You cannot perform Contribute
administration tasks without a connection to the remote server.
Please fix the remote connection before proceeding."
    5. NOTE: When the "Administer Site in Contribute" (or Test)
button is clicked in DW, it appears that several files are being
loaded to the remote server before the error message appears.
Subsequent attempts at clicking the buttons seems to load more
    files. Very weird.
    6. FACTS: There is no problem with the remote connection from
    either DW or CT.
QUESTION: What's up with this message? Why is there a failure
to communicate between these two application that wasn't there
    before?
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
    Chris Kane

Have you found an answer for this. I am in a similar
situation, in CS3 Mac. If I use www.mysite.com/www, which is the

Dreamweaver could not find a page at the specified site root

If I just go to the main url, www.mysite.com, I get:
Dreamweaver could not connect to the remote server. You
cannot perform Contribute administration tasks without a connection
to a remote server. Please fix the remote connection before

I've tried it on another site I administer and it worked

    hi,
i am also new to contribute it is just that im using CS 3
you mentioned that you were not able to connect to any site
    at all,,,
i had the same issue at first and contacted IT ,turns out
that the issue is not with contribute but my computer settings,,,
try to check if your machine is using a proxy server this
might be conflicting with your connection from contribute to the
    server
    (tools>internet options>connections>LAN settings )
if the proxy server is checked you would need to disable it and use
a fire wall client instead for security purposes,i would also
suggest for you to contact IT if you need assistance.
i think the reason why they no longer support older versions
is that the issue for that old one is already solved with the new
    release,,,hmmm
also i was able to find this tech note(but this is for CS 3,
although its the same concept), i just hope it helps= )

  • Contribute 4 and new Google owned-Blogger - connection problem

There was an old thread on this topic but no resolution from
Adobe... only user solution seemed to be an upgrade to new
Contribute CS3 which I cannot do.
I have a new Google Blogger account, I want to manage my blog
through Contribute 4. There is a connection issue - the preset
configuration for Blogger on Contribute is not valid, I do not know
what to put into the wizard to configure manually to get round this
    issue.
Please can someone confirm that Contribute 4 IS compatible
with the new Google-owned Blogger system and how to set up the
connection... or if I need to download some sort of patch/update to
get this working. This is a huge issue for me right now ;-(
Thanks anyone and everyone for any help you can give me.
    Yours somewhat despondent...

Let me second this call for support. I originally purchased
Contribute 4.0 for the express purpose of uploading my Blogger site
when the program was originally brought to market. When I first
learned the wizard was programmed incorrectly, I exhausted all of
the available support channels and was told months ago that the fix
was coming. Here we are almost a year later and the largest blog
platform in the nation can't be accessed by Adobe's offering for
the masses. Has the Dreamweaver culture been totally absorbed and
    discarded into the Adobe citadel?
