QT movie to H.264

Hello guys,
I am converting QT movie to H.264 using ProRes as intermediate codec. This is the workflow:
from QT movie to ProRes. From ProRes to H.264.
My question is this. If I want to change some settings, like audio or frame controls, do I have to change it only in one step or in both steps? Do I have to change it once in ProRes settings and leave default setting in H.264? Or do I have to change it in ProRes and then again in H.264?
Thank you so much

Hello Wally,
Qt movie is just name used by Final Cut Pro for QT file you end up with when exporting your project. Many tutorials suggest to export it as this QT to obtain the best possible picture quality. ProRes is an intermediate codec designed for saving huge amount of rendering time. If I convert it directly into H.264 it takes several hours. Converting it to ProRes and then to H.264 takes about 15 minutes.
Excellent grasp of a complex workflow.
If I want to change some settings, like audio or frame controls, do I have to change it only in one step or in both steps? Do I have to change it once in ProRes settings and leave default setting in H.264? Or do I have to change it in ProRes and then again in H.264?< </div>
You want to make changes only once and target them to your specific needs. In this case, you want to preserve everything in your intermediate that the original has to offer. then you make your framing and audio changes and modifications for your targeted export, regardless of the codec.
If you knew your intermediate was going to be feeding a certain collection of output target, you might want to add some processing to the that step, but not usually. For instance, your original is 1080i with 5.1 audio and say you know your targets are different codecs but they're all 640x480 letterboxed and mono and, umm, black and white. You could export to your intermediate with most of those settings intact. This would save considerable time in the transcoding.
Or did I miss the whole point?

  • After Effects render constraints for .mov with h.264 codec maximum dimensions 2000px x 2000px?

Is there anyway I can create  .mov container with h.264 codec with dimensions 3840px by 1080px? When I try rendering from AE it lowers dimensions to under 2000px. Same thing happens when I try to save as from Quicktime. Programs I have access to are Premiere Pro, After Effects, Adobe Media Encoder, and Final Cut.
    Thank you for your help.

Yes, It does seem to be mutliple LDCs. They asked for a final output video as 3840x1080. The  requirements are this and they finally sent this display.
    Basic Requirements
Ensure the resolution of the file (width and height in pixels) matches the specs provided exactly, even small deviations can result in poor quality playback or no playback at all
.MOV animations must use H.264 encoding
We recommend 15fps (frames per second) for animation
File size should be roughly 1 Megabyte per second or less, i.e. a 10 second .MOV file should be 10MB or less.
Thank you for your help, I will ask on the other forum.

  • Error trying to convert .mov to H.264 (mp4) for vimeo upload

    Hi.
I have a 25 minute long sequence which is 1920x1080. I already exported a .mov file (49 GB) with out changing any settings and it plays back perfect.
I want to upload this to vimeo as high quality as possible. They suggest H.264 (mp4) and a whole string of other optimal settings. When I exported from FCP with their requested settings the result was a glitchy/pixelated mess which I would be embarrassed to show. I have seen a lot of high quality movies on vimeo, so i know it's possible to have it look better.
I tried next to use a variety of conversion programs to convert the .mov file to H.264/mp4. mpegstreamclip and Emicsoft MTS converter both gave me problems. I also tried to "save as" from quicktime and also ran into quality problems.
I just tried using Compressor, and after 3 hours got this error:

    THANKS!

if the movie you exported is self-contained, not a reference movie it is not referencing your original files. Try putting it on the external, and render to the external too. I hope the Lacie is a 7200 drive and firewire, NOT usb.
For testing purposes you could use quicktime pro and cut out a small 30 second or 1 minute section, and see if compressor will process that - then do your whole movie

  • H.264 in mov vs. h.264 in mp4

I find this very confusing. what is the difference between using h.264 in a .mov file and using it in a .mp4 file.
Is MP4 both a container file and a codec?
I am sold on h.264, but now I don't know which to use it in: Export to QT Movie or Export to mp4.

I don't think Apple is "pushing" the .mov extension over the .mp4 extension. The issue about MPEG-4 (and .mp4 files) is one of Microsoft's refusal to follow the standards and the attempt to create their own.
Many .mp4 files created using Windows software use "proprietary" Microsoft codecs that do not comply. People will soon be very confused (like the way it is today with .avi files).
Another issue is the browser plug-in. Users must "set" the plug-in (MIME Settings) to handle .mp4 extension. It is turned off during a default install of QT.
A Web visitor (first time visit to a page holding an .mp4) may have the file "download", open in a new browser window or even in a different application other than QT.
Whenever I use MPEG-4 settings in my projects destined for Web use I always use the .mov container.
Next year will bring the first MPEG-4 DVD's and some broadcasters are already using H.264 for set top boxes (convertors for HD signals).
One day the .mov format will seem about as relevant as DOS. We aren't there yet.

I want to know the best way to batch convert movies in Quicktime Pro with H.264 compression and save as a .mov file?
The QT Pro Player is not, in and of itself, a batch processing application. You can, however, parallel process your files easily enough. Simple open your additional source files and set up your export options for each. As each new export begings, a new progress bar will appear in your export window. If you wish true sequential batch processing, use an application like MPEG Streamclip (free) as your "front end" to access the QT structure for exportation.

I have a .mov that is 3840x2160 and that's what it should be. I need to convert it to h.264 and keep the 3840x2160. I have tried several things and it always renders to 1920 x 1080. How do I get it to render to the 3840x2160?
    Thanks

What would those "several things" be that you've already tried?
It wouldn't hurt to know something about the project, your machine, and other things, either:

  • Limitations of Quicktime files (.mov and h.264) in Windows 64-bit.

It was recently brought to my attention (yes, I'm late to the party) that any file that requires the Apple Quicktime process for playback (decoding) is severely limiting my otherwise powerful system.  The Quicktime process is a 32-bit process, which limits your editing functionality to 4GB of RAM—even if you have 32GB or more installed!
I'm starting this new thread because the thread on which this was brought to my attention wasn't directly related to these issues.
A few of my questions:  Why do so many cameras create .MOV or .MP4 files that require QuickTime components?  64-bit QuickTime X has aparently been available on the Mac for quite a while, yet I presume they won't allow anyone else to develop a 64-bit codec for Windows, so why hasn't someone sued Apple for monopoly, anti-trust, conflict-of-interest, etc?  And most importantly, in a world where DSLRs and off-board ProRes recorders abound, are Windows users really stuck with no option but to transcode the footage before heavy use in Premiere?  The Atomos recorders provide the option of using DNxHD, however, if I understand correctly, that codec still requires Quicktime (I've not tested this bit).  Is there a matrix available that shows camera / recorded format / requires quicktime / 8- or 10-bit / 4:2:0 or 4:2:2, etc?
To my fellow Windows 64-bit editors, how do you keep your sanity when editing "natively" in Premiere .MOV, .MP4, ProRes or DNxHD with the 4GB RAM limitation?  And what camera / off-board recorder do you prefer to avoid both a long transcoding session AND get right to work with native 64-bit codecs?
    Thanks in advance!

    http://blogs.adobe.com/VideoRoad/2012/12/premiere-pro-and-quicktime-an d-nikon-oh-my.html
Just now.  Yet, it seems to contradict my own findings.  The article says:  "In the case of Canon DSLR files, there’s something in the file header. Premiere Pro can recognize that the clips came from a Canon camera, and bypass QuickTime. This enables Premiere Pro to have smooth playback of DSLR files..."
The test I conducted was between files from a Canon 7D in their original format vs. an AVI file I transcoded from those originals using GoPro Studio (formerly Cineform).  I load up a project and timeline with the original 7D files and then scrub the heck out of the timeline, back and forth.  I have Task Manager open in order to monitor my RAM usage.  I simply could not get past roughly 4GB.  Once I deleted all the original .MOV files from the project, retaining only the transcoded .AVIs, the project cut like butter.  The harder I scrubbed the timeline, the higher my RAM usage soared until it gradually, and gracefully came close to maxing out.  Lol.  Is there a better test I should run?
The other test I ran was a project where I took a single talking head clip of approximately 5 minutes in length.  Nothing too taxing for the hard drive, and something that *should* be easy enough to play completely from RAM, once it played through once or twice.  I cut this clip and staggered a few tracks on top of eachother.  No effects, no transparency.  The cumulative effect was a cuts-only edit, but on the timeline my tracks looked like stairs, etc (perhaps the stairs weren't necessary).  The primary goal here was to watch how the system performed with a simple cuts-only project where Peremiere was repeatedly asked to access the same file from random locations in the file.   The .AVI version of this project, again, played flawlessly.  The .MOV version played even worse than I was expecting, since cuts-only 7D footage is usually not SO hard on the system (even if it is limited to 4GB RAM).  The .MOV project couldn't keep up.  Period.  As soon as the file needed to "jump back" on itself, the refresh rate became intolerable.
So is the 7D an exception to the rule stated in that article?  It definitely seems to be limited to 4GB of RAM!  If it isn't, why am I seeing this?
Also, is it possible that the footage from the 7D may not *REQUIRE* Quicktime to decode, but since Quicktime is found on my system, the 7D files default to using it anyway?
I've not tested my GoPro footage so thoroughly, but I believe it's limited in the same way.  After a transcode to AVI in GoPro Studio, even 2.7K footage plays slick as a whistle.  Not so when I don't transcode.
    Further thoughts?

  • Mov or h.264/AVC format - Casio Exilim EX-F1

Does anyone have any experience with the new EX-F1? I'm currently thinking of buying this camera since it has the FULLHD movie functionality. The EX-F1 saves the film in the mov-format. I heard different rumors if I can import these films and this format also with Final Cut Express and can cut / edit them. Is there anyone who can give me som ekind of feedback or suggestions?
    Thanks and regards

To all intents and purposes FCP is the same as FCE.
1080i as far as I know is not a format, maybe someone with more knowledge can clarify the point.
The problem is that many people think that if a camera shoots "digital video", its output should be editable in a digital video editing application.
Unfortunately there are numerous digital video formats and most of them are not compatible.
FCE/FCP edit DV, which stands for Digital Video, but is not to be confused with digital video using small letters.
DV is a specific format of digital video, not to be confused with all the other versions of digital video like the various flavours of MPEG etc.
It's a bit like car engines. All engines (except Wankels) have pistons, but you can't put Ford pistons in a Toyota engine etc. You have to use the correct parts for the particular car.
So FCE/FCP won't (easily) edit any old type of digital video.

  • How do I convert MOV file to H.264 with QT Pro?

Hey where is the option to select h.264 in the drop down menu for "export"?
I have been trying to convert an MOV file I took with my pocket camera to H.264, so I can upload it to Google video .
But when I clic on "Export" I get all kind of options like "movie to bmp, movie to avi, movie to iPod, ect. ect. ect. ect."
But where is the option for "movie to H.264"?
I don't see it. So I selected "Movie to Mpeg4" , thinking that this might work just as well for uploading to Google videos. I kind of would rather use H.264 instead because Google says it accepts it and I think it would be a smaller more compressed file.
My QT Pro version is 7.2,,,,,,,maybe that is the problem.
Any Ideas out there? Please help, I have been spending all day trying to do this simple task with a 9 min. clip. whew!
    Thanks, -Scott

Ok you guys, here is what happened. When I click on the "export" drop down menu and I selected "mpeg 4" Then I clk. "options" and then I clk on the "Video Format" drop down , all that I can select is ,'None, MPEG-4 Basic and MPEG-4 Improved.
As QTKirk mentioned above, "pick a container and then pick the codecs." In this case select the "MP4" File Format and then see if the H.264 can be selected.
H.264 is there but not highlighted, why? I do not have the option to select it...... I tried. It is all grayed out. So is the option "Pass Through".
See above. If you reset the File Format to "MP4" and the H.264 option is still not available, then I would suspect that the file is not "fully supported" by QT. MOV is a file container -- not a codec. Had assumed your model would likely be the QT supported MJPEG/Wave combination but I could be wrong.
also the option for video size selection is all grayed out for selecting 640X480 or anything bigger. The only video size options that are in full black, for selection are 352X288, 320X240, 176X144 and 160X120. My original file is 640X480.
Once again, the MPE4 (ISMA) File format is tied to specific "standardized" settings while the MP4 option is not. Switch to the MP4 option and see if all options be come available. Also note, making your encode dimensions larger than your source file can reduce the quality your final product (i.e., make it "fuzzy" in this case).

  • Slow motion 50% export H.264 MOV (at half frame rate)

    Hi,
I'm using a QuickTime MOV file (H.264, 1080p/59.94fps, 15 seconds) and have set slow motion to 50% (= 30 seconds).
Can anyone confirm that when I export this clip to 29.97fps I won't lose frames?
I have Compressor and think I found nearly all required settings except:
    - Key frames - shall I use automatic or 24 or what? (How can I find out what the original key frame value was?)
    - Frame reordering - shall I uncheck this option? (What does it mean? It's not in the manual.)
    Many thanks!

If you want to make absolutely sure you won't lose frames, you should manually set a project to 29.97fps, import your 60/59.94fps and conform the video (Retime menu > Conform Speed [the retime menu is the 2nd one from the left over the effects browser area/under the inspector area]). FCPX will automatically frame for frame adjust the video to fit to the slower frame rate.
Key frames (video compression, not animation):  a key frame is a complete image -- 100% pixels in use. Every frame between the key frames are only the parts of the image that change from the last frame (like Cel animation). Setting Automatic allows the software to make the best choices of when and where to create a complete frame. Otherwise, you can experiment with different values (up to All, which is pretty much no compression) to see what kinds of results you get and the overall quality (use very short pieces, like 5 -10 seconds.)  High motion areas in video are always going to be the most challenging with respect to compression (particularly bitrate), so... it's worth figuring out what settings you like that will give the best results (and 5-10second clips don't take that long to render.) I generally use Automatic and adjust the bitrates to give the best overall results (which occasionally requires testing segments.)
Frame reordering:  allows applications to "decompress" video frames in a different order than they are played, thereby allowing those apps that understand it a way to work faster. Larry Jordan suggests that this setting always be set for H.264 video (although I don't if I'm uploading to YouTube -- I try not to give YouTube any excuses for recompressing my video, so I try to have it already optimized before uploading... so far, it seems to be working.)

  • How do I divide a long h.264 .mp4 into smaller movies?

I have 2.5 hrs of .mp4 movie in h.264 format that I would like to divide into 1/2 hr units.
    1. I find it very difficult to get my crops accurate in QT.
    2. When I save it it saves a .mov, just changing the file type to .mp4 in Finder renders it unreadable
    3. Exporting to mpeg4, which I presume will create an .mp4 file, takes forever
There has to be a better way surely.
    Can anyone help? Much appreciated.

Use the Movie Inspector window and some keyboard shortcuts to get accurate "cuts". The left/right arrow keys move one frame at a time. Hold down the Shift key as you tap the arrow keys to expand or reduce your selection. Letter i and o keys set in and out points to make a selection.
Once you have your selection use Command-C (copy), open a new (empty) Player window and Command-V (paste). Save As to make a new file.
Switch back to your longer file. If you no longer need your current selection simply hit the delete key. Repeat the steps above until your made all your "parts".
When you get to your final selection and just Save As to make a new file. Close the older window and make sure not to save "changes" when you close the window. This will leave your original file untouched by these edits.
These new files will be identical to your source but will be in a .mov container. No need to edit the file extension or export again.

  • M4v movie file in h.264 format freezes in itunes/quicktime

I have some movie files in .m4v format with h.264 codec, and when I play these in itunes/quicktime, the video quickly freezes but the audio continues to run without pause. I've noticed that a movie in .m4v as an MPEG4 works fine, however. Exact same result if I run a .mkv movie with h.264/MPEG4 (works for MPEG4 only)
    I'm using a Unibody MB OSX 10.5.8.
I'm hoping to run the h.264 in itunes so I can stream it to a new apple tv because of the better quality vs. MPEG4.

  • "Incompatible format" when importing H.264 NTSC .mov file

    DVD Studio Pro 4.0.3. G5. OS X 10.4.11.
Created a new SD DVD project, NTSC. Tried to import a .mov file: H.264, AAC movie file: H.264 Decoder, 320 x 240, Millions, AAC, Stereo (L R), 32.000 kHz. FPS: 15.
Message: "Incompatible format". Exported to PCM audio, no dice. Exported to DV/DVCPRO and PCM audio, imported OK. Any suggestions? Thanks.
    Bob

DVDSP only accepts a fairly narrow range of file types when it comes to importing.
For video, that means files that are in editing codecs (like DV/DVCPro), if you want DVDSP's internal encoder to process them. Otherwise, if you want to encode elsewhere, you must present it with either an MPEG-2 file (usually preferable) or an MPEG-1 file. Since your source file is smaller-than-the-norm frame size, MPEG-1 would have worked for you. Though DVDSP, only accepts 23.98 or 29.97 frame rates in NTSC land. (of course, for PAL projects, 25 fps is cool)
In terms of audio, .aiff or .ac3 are acceptable.

  • Nikon D600 MOV (h.264) files slow in Premiere 5.5

I'm wondering why the Nikon MOV files (h 264, 1080/30p) files stutter in Premiere 5.5. Doesns't matter if "CUDA" is turned on or off. They play back so smoothly in any other media player (Windows Media player, Quick time player, etc. and at full res.)  The similar files from my Canon 7D also play back much more smoothly in Premiere 5.5.  I'm wondering if the Nikon D600 is too new for Premiere 5.5 and if I need to upgrade to version 6.  Any ideas?  The system is running fairly fast - Win7 Pro X64, Intel 3770K (not yet accelerated, 16GB RAM).

To add to Jim's remark, the reason is the .MOV extension. That causes PR to use QuiRckTime and that is a 32 bit application. It completely destroys the 64 bit nature of PR, thus reducing available memory to around 3.3 GB, even if 64 GB is installed, increasing the swapping to pagefile, slowing down your system even further.
