Question on Branching

I have defined two conditional branches on a page X
1. If PL/SQL Expression 1 is TRUE then go to Page Y
2. If PL/SQL Expression 1 is FALSE, then go to Page Z.
It seems I need to define an additional branch which is UNCONDITIONAL back to same page (X), otherwise I keep getting error ERR-1777: Page provided no branch.
any reasons why ?

  • Multiple Choice Question Issues

I am embedding a quiz within my presentation with individual
question slides interspersed throughout the presentation. These
questions are pulled from a couple of different question pools. I
want to use a multiple choice question that branches to different
parts of the presentation depending on the correct or incorrect
answer. If the user answers the question incorrectly, I send them
to the next slide which has two click boxes. On this slide, they
can either click one box to move back in the presentation and
review the material or click another box to move them forward to
another multiple choice question. If they go back and review the
information, they would eventually return to the same multiple
choice question to try it again. (This is the desired navigation,
    anyway.)
What actually happens is that when the user goes back to
review the information and then finally returns to the question,
the question has not been reset and still shows the incorrect
answer marked with no way to clear it.
I have used this same navigation on a drag-and-drop type
question and it works fine. All the settings for the
multiple-choice questions are set the same as in the drag-and-drop
    question.
Any help in making this work correctly would be greatly
    appreciated.

I can't see where that error might arise except possibly for a case where an AS2 radio is used since it appears they don't have a group property, but an AS3 radio button does.  Check to be sure that your Flash Publish Settings are set to use AS3.  AS3 errors normally have error numbers which also makes the error you quoted ring of an AS2 scenario.
Here's a link to the file I made based on your code that works fine and doesn't display the errors you mention.  It is a CS3 file.

  • Multiple branches to the same page

    A few questions about branches...
    1. Having a branch back to the same page with a 'when button pressed=Submit', another branch back to the same page with some other button-press condition, etc are all redundant, right?
It is sufficient to have just one unconditional branch back to the same page, right?
    2. What is the difference between branch type 'branch to page or url' and simply 'branch to page'? Does the former cover the latter, so why do we need two types?
    3. Anyway, when I choose the latter, there is a checkbox below the page number for 'branch to page using redirect'. What does this mean?
    4. I have always seen the 'On submit: after processing' branch point being used. When would the other branch points be used?
    Thanks

    Vikas,
    1. No, they are not "all redundant" nor is any
individual one. What if your page is submitted in
some way other than by one of the buttons evaluated
    in the branch definitions?
Right, thats why I said "It is sufficient to have just one unconditional branch back to the same page, right?". Why is it not sufficient to have just 1 unconditional branch? That would cover all the cases. Each page process can then check for whatever conditions it needs?Ummm, you say "Right" to my rebuttal and then you restate your original premise -- that logic eludes me. Let me offer this: Ponder my question, exactly as I wrote it, and consider self-submitting items, tabs, javascript, fields that submit the page when you hit Enter, etc., then it might make more sense. I don't think I can help you with that last part "Each page process..." even if it were an actual question.
    2. A Branch to Page (aka direct branch) calls the
target page directly from accept processing without
using a URL redirect. The other type redirects.
Maybe this has nothing to do with HTMLDB, but whats the difference between "directly from accept processing" and "redirect"?Fair question. When you submit a page, wwv_flow.accept processes it. When it finishes, it evaluates the branching logic to determine what page you see next and then either redirects to that page (to f?p=...) or calls wwv_flow.show in the same database session (direct branch).
    3. That's a way of creating most branches as URL
redirect branches when the developer isn't paying
attention. Uncheck the box to "really" create a
    direct branch.
You seem to be implying that a "direct branch" is not really desirable in most cases? Why? (I guess your answer to my question above will clear this up for me)Well, they're usually not the best choice. You end up with "wwv_flow.accept" in the browser location window after the branch and using the browser's back button to go back to those requests gives you that annoying "page contains POSTDATA" message. Those branches can be useful if you want to stay in the same database session for page processing (after submit) and the subsequent page view, such as in the case of inline validation errors where package state is maintained. The checkbox (default checked) technique is to require developers to really think about a choice that may have been reflexive.
    4. Please read the User's Guide.
I did. Lets take them 1 by one
    a. On submit, before computation: The docs say this is to be used for a Cancel button. But wouldnt a javascript:document.form.reset() do the same thing?A Cancel button that submits the page does just that, it submits the page, allowing session state to be saved and any logic on the page to be performed before the correct branch is taken. You ask whether that javascript would do the same thing. The same thing as what, the Cancel button? No!
    b. on load before header: "...displays another page instead of the current page...". But then why wouldnt I just create a branch of some other branch point with that "another page number" in the first place?Because sometimes it's better for page X to decide to go to page Y before doing much of anything than for N callers of page X to make the same determination.
I guess I am having difficulty understanding the concept of a "branch point". As you said elsewhere, a branch doesnt contain any logic, it doesnt call anything, it just branches to some page/url.Where did I say that?
So, why have all these different branch points? What advantage does having this fine degree of control provide us? (as opposed to always 'on submit: after processing'?)Your proposal about reviewing various branch points was "Lets take them 1 by one", but then you skipped three of them. Please read the entire section on branching, create pages with all possible types of branches and a variety of buttons and conditions, experiment extensively with them and let us know if it's still unclear. I think you'll find, over time, that all features
in HTML DB are there for a good reason. The developers found a need for them developing real applications. Where capabilities were missing, features were invented and added,
where features seemed useless, they were dropped/deprecated. The tool you see today has been evolving for years. I think it's unreasonable to expect to be able to
appreciate the value of every single feature until you've been using HTML DB for a couple of years.

Simple Question - Which branch of MBA would suit my work experience?Unfortunately, your question is too simple.
I have worked in FinanceSo you delivered peoples pay cheques?
MfgYou made christmas cards as a side line?
ConstructionYou mixed cement for the builders?
How can anybody possibly give you any viable suggestions as to what would be suitable for you if you are going to be so vague in your description of your skills. People would need to have full details as if you were writing your CV to have any idea what sort of thing suits you.

  • Action Dropdown failure

The action drop down does not function in an interactive report. It works on an existing page in the application. The page in question is branched to from a another page. When I copy the page that works and branch to it, the action drop down does not work. If I branch to the working page, the action drop down works. Each time the only things that change on the branching page are the page being branched to and two page variables.

I believe I know what your problem is. Perhaps not but it sounds familiar!
If your Interactive Report is conditional based on a specific request, the Actions menu, column sorting and anything else that uses AJAX breaks. This is because all the functionality in the report is still dependant on that condition, and all of the standard javascript calls do not set the REQUEST each time.
If this is the case and this is the issue you're facing, I logged a bug for that already via Oracle Support (14483344). There is no workaround for this - you simply cannot use the extra functionality in Interactive Reports conditionally based on the REQUEST parameter.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is SQR #include a depth first search or breadth first search alrgorithm

Just wondering if SQR compiler is a dfs or bfs algorithm? I am guessing a dfs since includes can show up at the beginning or end of the sqr or sqc definition but position is relevant. So a few questions that branch off of that one.
I have successfully included file filea.sqc and fileb.sqc in myfile.sqr, then included file subfile.sqc in both filea.sqc and fileb.sqc. There seemed to be no error message, so I am wondering how the file include works. I would think from a compiler point of view, if we included the same procedure or function twice, we should do one of three things - ignore the second instance (do nothing), override the first instance, or throw an error.
So, anyone know how the compiler stack is built?

The documentation doesn't help much, but if you want to prevent an include from being loaded more than once, you should be able to use a combination of compiler directives, i.e. #IFNDEF and #DEFINE.
In your example, if you code subfile.sqc like
    #IFNDEF SUBFILE_INCLUDED
    #DEFINE SUBFILE_INCLUDED Y
    begin-procedure subfile_proc
#ENDIFthen you should only get one copy of the code between the #IFNDEF-#ENDIF statements.
You could probably use something similar to test how SQR handles multiple includes of the same file. Try something like
    #IFDEF SUBFILE_INCLUDED
    Display 'Subfile included twice'
    #ENDIF
    #IFNDEF SUBFILE_INCLUDED
    #DEFINE SUBFILE_INCLUDED Y
#ENDIFand see if the message is displayed.

  • Does an if condition should work via RunSelectedSteps?

    Hallo,
I start a part of the Sequence via RunSelectedSteps and between the steps there is a condition like this:
    if (Locals.Count == 5)
        { do something }
    End
Although the variable locals.count isn't equal to 5, it seems that TS handles the if condition as true and execute the steps. Is this a correct behavior? If you don't know this, it might confuse the debuging process a little bit.
    Regards
    Carsten

    Carsten -
There are two options on the Execution tab of the Station Options dialog box that you should look at: "Branch Mode" and "Evaluate Preconditions". The one that will affect your question is "Branch Mode". Basically the If will be ignored if the setting is "Ignore All Branching" or "Ignore Branches to Unselected Steps" and you do not select the End step. Try setting this to "Allow All Branching" to see if the behavior is what you want.
"Propagate Failures and Errors from Nested Interactive Execution to Calling Execution" is another useful setting to be aware of.

  • Branching quiz based on unanswered questions

I'm using Captivate 5.5 to design an awareness module that contains 2 short knowledge checks at key points in the module (around 5-6 questions for each). The knowledge checks aren't compulsory and learners can move freely backwards and forwards through the module, and therefore can skip questions.
We want to encourage them to answer all the questions (but not force them to if they don't want to). I've thought of branching the module at the end, with uncompleted questions branching to a reminder slide, and all questions completed going to a summary of the module.
The way I've tried to do this is to use an Advanced Action with the CpQuizInfoTotalUnansweredQuestions variable to trigger the branching. This works okay if the learner doesn't move backwards. Once they go backwards past a question they haven't answered yet it will be counted as unanswered a second time. This means that there is no way they can ever get the variable to 0 and then move to the summary slide.
Is there any way to use the CpQuizInfoTotalUnansweredQuestions variable to get it counting the unanswered questions correctly?
The other way I had thought of doing it was to add another variable that changes when the branching/reminder slide is visited the first time, and having the Advanced Action check the variable to see if the slide has been visited before and if it has then it forces the slide to be skipped. This would assume that the learner went back and found and answered all the questions they missed or decided not to answer them all.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

  • How do I get my captivate lesson to back up through branching and Questions?

I have a course of 60 lesson slides with question slides appearing throughout the lesson. It also uses branching. Our legal department wants the user to be able to back up through the entire lesson but I have encountered the following problems:
    - When I use the skin to create a navigation bar the back up buttons won't follow the branched section the user followed but instead simply back up to the previous slide number.
    - When I created my own back up bottons, which can be set to jump to the branched slides, I discovered that I can't add them to the question slides.
    - When I tried a combination of my own buttons for the lesson slides and the back button, that is an option within the question slide properties, I discovered that once the user clicks this back up button on the question slide (and then comes forward to that question slide again) he/she is stuck and can't proceed past the question slide. The slide remembers the previous question response (the radio button selected previously is still black) and not even the skip button will allow the user to advance.
I'm hoping someone else has encountered this type of problem and can help me with a solution. I currently have both captivate 3.0 and 4.0.
Any help at all would be appreciated a lot.
    Kevin Martin

    Here's something to try...
Remove the skin so users must use the buttons you add, which will work with the branching. Add a menu to the project and strategically pick the slides that are included in the drop-down. I'm pretty sure you could have the menu go to quiz slides. I use lesson dividers as the options in the menu so users can go to the beginning of a section.
I will warn you that many folks have experienced quiz slides locking up if the user goes backwards through the module at any time. When they get to any quiz slide, there will be a caption that says "You did not answer the question completely" and the user cannot continue.
To avoid this glitch, I re-created quiz slides from scratch using click boxes and text entry boxes. This gives you a little more control over things, but you can't replicate every type of quiz question CP has.
Hope this helps...I'm no expert, but I've dealt with the same issues. Good luck!

Did this update make a physical change? Branching from that question, will this update confuse lets say, a parent that isn't savvy?

Did this update make a physical change?
    No
will this update confuse lets say, a parent that isn't savvy?
This will depend on whether they are savvy enough to open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility on their Mac , click on the picture of the AirPort, and then click the Update button.
It that sounds too complicated, best to let someone else handle the update.

  • Random branching for quiz questions

I have a quiz that has ten questions. I want participants to

I've uploaded our solution to the random quiz in captivate to

  • Branching with random questions

    Captivate newbie here...
I am trying to create a Jeopardy-style quiz in Captivate 3
using random questions which are contained in separate pools for
each question category. The game board is on slide 2 and it has 20
transparent buttons with "jump to slide" actions, each of which
points to a random question slide. The random questions slides have
a Submit button and a Back button, which I intend to cause a
backward jump to the game board. The branching tree view shows one
navigation arrow (black) from slide 2 to each question slide, and
each question slide shows "Jump to slide 2" actions for both
    success and failure.
I had hoped that the jump back to the gameboard would be
automatic after the user answers the question, but it isn't. The
Back button on each slide must be used to get back to the
gameboard, but sometimes it takes the user back to previous slides,
with their already-answered questions, and the user must hit the
back button many times to get back to the gameboard.
I used the downloadable sample Jeopardy game from this site
as inspiration, but it's not really a quiz. In it, the user does
not enter an answer; instead, the answer is presented via a
    rollover.
So I guess the question is, can you use navigation with
    random question slides?

Hi ImagineerBill and welcome to our community
As you have seen, Captivate isn't too keen on allowing
Question slides to be presented in any order. I know this probably
sounds contrary to how random question slides work. But please hear
    me out.
Captivate normally moves from slide to slide in a linear
manner. This introduces a problem if you desire to branch backward
    in a quiz.
The answer to your actual question of "Can you branch from
Random Questions" is that you can. But you need to consider how the
branching will work and how it may affect scoring.
We see a similar issue erupt when you wish to have a common
slide with many links that may be launched. Often, the person is
desiring that as the original slide is returned to, the visited
slide is somehow marked as having been visited. And as you have
seen, this is exactly how the Jeopardy style game works. It works
by exploiting a bug/feature/callit what you want with Captivate.
This is the feature of a slide retaining the moused over state when
you have a rollover on it that is combined with a Click Box object.
Because the slide is presenting the rollover as if you were still
mousing over it, it indicates the destination has been visited.
To be honest, I'm not sure a solution exists for what you are
seeking. Unless you might construct the random slides as a series
that must be answered in a specific order, but presenting random
questions until you exhaust the pool.
    Cheers... Rick

  • CP5.5 Navigation not working with 2 questions in different branches of a project.

    Ok.
The project is a simple thing that advances to a two option menu.
Each of the two options takes you down a branch of learning till you get to a single question slide (multiple choice)
Once that is completed (either correctly or incorrectly) you can go back to the menu page and click on the button to go down the second branch which again ends with a question slide.
Once that is completed (again either pass or fail) you progress through to the end of the product to the close.
You can go down either branch.
However, once you have done either branch 1 or branch 2 question (in either order), when you go down the alternate branch, the product hangs prior to the second question slide.
    Any ideas?
I know quizzing in CP5.5 is a bit tetchy.

Just had another idea.  This issue might be due to Quiz Scope.
Try adding a score to the button/s that allows the user to head off down either branch.  Alternatively, try adding a True/False question on a slide BEFORE the branching slide.
If having a scored object at or before the branching slide solves the issue, then you know that what you're dealing with is a Quiz Scope issue.  Then you can just extend the quiz scope to at or before the branch slide to fix it.

  • Circular loop in question slide even though branching view looks different

I'm having a bit of trouble getting captivate to do something
every simple. I need to ask a few short yes/no questions if the
user answers "No" to all then they get redirected to a web address.
If they answer yes they get a different slide that points them to
    the contact details.
My problem is that no matter what answer I give for the
questions I end up getting sent to the contacts slide. The
branching view looks like it should do what I need.
Is there a way of telling from the XML export if there is a
    problem with the source?

    Hmm... that's a weird one.
Does your "failure" slide comes before the "success" slide in
your project? If not, try switching them around and see if that
    fixes things.
Otherwise, I'm wondering if it's not an issue of the Quiz
preferences being too limiting to ever get to the "failure" slide.
Depending on the order your slides appear in, Captivate may not be
allowed to go to the "failure" slide.
Quiz navigation issues typically result from the settings in
the Quiz preferences being incorrect. I'd try setting the quiz to
Optional in the Quiz preferences and then play with some of the
other settings to see if that helps.

  • Branching to particular assessment questions within one CP File

Wondering if this functionality works. My course has two branching paths midway through the course, depending on the type of job role (Job Role #1 views certain slides in the course, and Job Role #2 views other slides in the course).
At the end of the course, there is a SCORM assessment. Course will be uploaded to an LMS and learners have to pass with a certain score.
Some questions in the assessment will be for both job roles and others will be only for either Job Role #1 or Job Role #2. My question is, can the user branch to the appropriate assessment questions for their job only and have it scored correctly in the LMS? I'm not sure this is possible since you can't have multiple assessments in one CP file. Thank you.

Are you using Captivate 6? In that case you can use Branch aware feature. I explained a little bit how it functions in this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5125622#5125622
