Question on troubleshooting

HI all,
Since the iTunes 7.7 "upgrade," I've been having some odd issues with my iMac and Apple TV. Since this forum is for the latter, I'll restrict my question accordingly.
My Apple TV no longer shows up in iTunes on my iMac. I've checked "Look for Apple TV" in iTunes preferences, and have checked off "Share contents of entire music library"; I've ensured that my firewall settings are set to "Allow incoming connections."
After going through the Apple Support doc that deals with this common problem, I've been hooped by one of their troubleshooting steps: "Ensure that iTunes Music Sharing" is on in the Sharing panel.
I don;t have that option in my Systems Preferences. Under ~/System Preferences/Sharing, I have the option to enable a bunch of things (Internet Sharing, Bluetooth Sharing, etc), but nothing specifically for iTunes or Music.
I'm running the latest version of Leopard. Where is this option?

Yeah. It'd be nice if they updated their troubleshooting advice to reflect that we're at 10.5.4.
Here's a weird thing. I've found that iTunes can find my ATV when I stream via AirTunes -- it instantly finds my Apple TV speakers, and all my iTunes music and the Internet radio stations come through. And when I choose "Add Shared iTunes Library" (Settings>Computers), the Apple TV shows up in my iTunes "Sources" column (with the generated five digit passcode), and seems to be ready to stream or sync. So somebody's talking to somebody...
Could it be as simple as reconnecting the ATV to iTunes, disconnecting from the main library, then re-syncing all my stuff? I've got one unwatched movie rental that I don't want to lose, then I'm trying that. Don't mind re-syncing if it solves this!

  • I have a question about troubleshooting Spotlight.

    I have a MacBook running 10.7.5, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB HD, with about 173 GB free.  Clean, virus-free, spyware-free system.
    Recently, the MacBook began freezing up.  I thought, at first, it was just Firefox, but it began doing it randomly, regardless of the activity. The freeze-ups would not only happen during regular use, but even during reboots or when starting in Recovery. I began to suspect that the freeze-ups were related to Spotlight when, after several reboots today, I happened to click on Spotlight to quickly access a diagnostic app.  I saw that Spotlight was "indexing".  The fan was running.  I began to wonder about that, as I do notice the fan running a lot, lately.  Rather than run any Terminal commands, I opened System Preferences ---->  Spotlight-----> Privacy, clicked the + button and dragged my hard drive's icon into the field, overlooking the warning that Spotlight wouldn't be able to return any searches.  Suddenly, my MacBook has not only stopped freezing up, the fan's no longer constantly running and I can now watch videos on YouTube.  (During the past week or so, videos would come to a screeching halt and begin "broken record repeating" and the cursor would freeze up.)  That's no longer happening; videos are fine. 
    My question is this:  I realize that it's probably not the best solution to keep my hard drive out of Spotlight's grasp, the Spotlight app is there for a reason.  But obviously, Spotlight is causing my MacBook to freeze up with all this indexing.  How would one go about isolating the offensive file, script, etc., that's sending Spotlight into its frenzy?  I'm reluctant to move the hard drive's icon out of the privacy field to ferret this out because the laptop will certainly freeze up about every 10 minutes.  But I suppose I must, in order to detect the issue?

    If you have had this problem while booted ino recovery mode, it's not a Spotlight issue. If your hard drive is failing, that could cause the problems you describe. Do you have good backups? If not, your first order of business needs to be backing up all data that you don't want to lose. Once you have done that, you can start troubleshooting.
    Regarding troubleshooting, you can check the SMART status of your hard drive in Disk Utility, but it's important to note that failing hard drives can easily have "verified" SMART status.
    It would also be worth repairing the hard drive with Disk Utility. If the hard drive is actually failing, though, repairing won't do squat... the drive will have to be replaced.
    Your problems involving Spotlight could also have been caused by a corrupt Spotlight index. Since you added the entire hard drive to the Privacy pane, removing it will cause Spotlight to completely rebuild the index, which would solve that problem... if that were the problem.
    Also, you mention that your machine is "clean, virus-free, spyware-free," which suggests that you may have been using cleaning utilities and anti-virus software. Regarding the former, that's a bad idea - see The myth of the dirty Mac. As for anti-virus software, what software are you using? Some anti-virus software is good, while others can bring your Mac to its knees.

    I have been having issues with my battery capacity. The battery will drain within half an hour with it being fully charged when the battery normally lasts me all day. I haven't had the phone that long so it most definitely shouldn't be happening. I went to my service provider about the problem and he said to go into the apple website, click "support" and then "battery capacity issues" to which you then type in your email to troubleshoot the problem on your phones however, I cannot find this. Someone help me out!

    1. I take a string from the 30rd to 255 character out of the URL starting at "/".
    2. Now I search for a string between "shop_Id=" and "_", on which the stickyness is based.
    3. string "148.49" is allocated to service1, string "148.48" is allocated to service2.
    Is there any possibillity to view or debug the handling, how the string is matched in the http request and on which service the request is forwarded ?

  • Photoshop elements 11 video editor troubleshooting

    Trying to edit video taken from nikon D90.    Video editor says that the file is not supported or is missing a "codec"
    Any advice?

    Do you have Premiere Elements 11 as well as Photoshop Elements 11?
    How are you importing your video into Premiere Elements 11 (assumed Windows)? Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets? Or are you moving it from the Elements Organizer into the Premiere Elements 11 Expert workspace? Does the video play back OK on any of your computer players (Premiere Elements not involved)?
    Bottom line may very well be a problem with the availability of the MotionJPEG video codec to Premiere Elements.
    The 3 remedies that one frequently sees:
    a. file conversion
    b. download, install of MotionJPEG codec
    c. grabbing appropriate codec from a camera utility if the camera has such a utility.

  • Troubleshooting Address Book issues using Palm Desktop for Mac (v. 4.2.1) and a T3?

    Can someone please make suggestions which would correct the following issues?
    1) When printing an Address Book from my Mac, the information in the "title" field prints twice. (I have checked my Preferences settings & reviewed how I have entered the information, etc. and everything is in order; also, an Address CARD DOES print correctly --- and --- after syncing to my T3 and then to my husband's PC, an Address Book prints correctly from the PC.)
    2) After I have synced the Address Book from my Mac to my T3, the "zip code" entries appear BEFORE the "city" entries on the T3. (The zip codes appear correctly on my Mac and print out correctly.)
    3) After I have synced the Address Book from my Mac to my T3, the "contacts" all appear in BLACK on my T3. Is there any way to show the different "contact categories" in COLOR on the T3 as they were originally entered in my Palm Desktop for Mac?

  • Iphone 5s: surprise shutdowns at lower battery %

    Iphone 5s; Version 8.1.1
    As soon as my iphone was a one year old in November, 2014 I started having this issue. I have not been able to track a pattern as to when this happens.
    Issue: When the battery is low enough: 25-40%, and I am trying to use my phone. It would suddenly hang and then shut down. When I try to turn it back on with the power key, the phone indicates no battery and asks for a plugin for charge. As soon as I plugin, the phone turns back on, and the battery is now low any more, it is at whatever percentage it was before it got shut down.
    Is there any one out there with such an issue? I feel that there is a defect in the battery or a bug in software.
    I am annoyed by this because I cannot trust my phone any more, it can power down randomly when I need it. Whats even more frustrating is that this problem started right after my warranty expired. I have owed iphone before, I am disappointed that the quality is degrading.

  • IPhone 5s iOS 8.1.2 turning off at random battery percents?

    For Christmas i was lucky enough to receive and iPhone 5s, upgrading from my 2 year old iPhone 4s which had a terrible battery life and numerous other glitches. All excited on Christmas day i restored my brand new iPhone 5s from the back up of my old iPhone 4s, then on that very day, my phone died at 55%, tried turning it back on and it indicated that i needed to plug it into a charger. i waited a minute, tried turning it back on, and it worked, showing that it had 53% left? so i continued to use my new phone, i was playing music out load and using Facebook messenger, then again it suddenly died, this time at 48%, tried the same method mentioned previously with the exact same result.
    Searching the internet for possible solutions, i tried a "DFU Restore". DFU stands for device firmware update. This did not provide any fix to the battery issue, the following day it suddenly shut down at 60%. I again tried a "DFU Restore" only this time i did not restore it from a backup, the first DFU "Restore" i restored it from the backup of the phone, the second time i didn't wondering if the issue was related to the backup. The second time worked, at least for a few days, then again it suddenly shut down with plenty of percent left.
    In Summary:
    My Brand new iPhone 5s with the latest iOS is randomly shutting down with plenty of percent left and then requires either charging to turn back on OR wait a minute or so and it will be able to be turned back on, only for the same thing to happen a minute later.
    I do not think my phone is incorrectly reading the battery level as it seems to be used at a normal rate.
    I have Tried:
    Restore
    "DFU Restore"
    Draining battery to 0% and charging to 100%
    Verbally abusing my iPhone
    All with no fix to my problem
    I am asking for advice, what else should i do? is their a fix that i don't know of? should i replace the battery? i don't know what else to do....

  • Users cannot edit a shared calendar of a shared mailbox that was deleted from the cloud and recreated on premise

    Description:
    The following example account [email protected] is an on premise AD account being used as a shared mailbox in the cloud. We have discovered that regardless of what we do, not a single user can edit the calendar entries.
    The following message is shown in Outlook Click to Run 2013 when an entry. "New appointment" button is also greyed out, including "Calendar Permissions" and some others.
    This problem started when the shared mailbox was created wrongly by creating it in the cloud first and we had to delete it and start over. The "in the cloud" user was deleted and the same user was created in AD on-premise with the same account name
    and then Dir Synced with the cloud. A license was assigned, a user mailbox on exchange online created and the type was converted to a shared mailbox and Editor rights were defined on the calendar folder for specific users.
    Actions performed:
    Action01: gave users Editor rights on calendar folder through powershell
    Result01: Rights correctly added and can be seen when get-mailboxfolderpermission is ran
    Action02: Opened calendar with Outlook and tried to edit entries
    Result02: Error message pops up saying "You don't have permission to create an entry in this folder. Right click the folder and check..."
    Action03: Opened calendar with OWA of users
    Result03: Users can edit the shared calendar on OWA
    Action04: Gave users Full Access permission on mailbox with automapping on
    Result04: Users can edit calendar in Outlook
    Action05: Gave users Full Access permission on mailbox with automapping off (mailbox no longer visible in outlook)

    Additional information:
    We have seen this problem with another user which was recreated, when he shares his calendar with others and people get the calendar invite email and click "Open Calendar" they receive a popup "The folder cannot be found".
    My first impression points to a corruption/bug in the GAL on exchange online, since we're using o365 for midsize bussinesses we cannot use the AdressList role to expose the adresslist cmdlts for deeper troubleshooting.
    PS:
    Issue tested on different computers and with different user accounts, not a single user can edit the calendar of [email protected] when editor rights are given.
    Noticed when editing rights for the shared mailbox in powershell after the first confirmation line
    Office 2013 is click to run was updated to latest version, version number: 15.0.4659.1001

    I haven't heard of that one.
    Questions:
    Does the calendar in question show up in the "Subscriptions" category of iCal?
    If you remove all accounts from iCal > Preferences > Accounts and quit and re-open iCal, does the calendar in question vanish? If so, does the calendar come back when you re-input the servers you need into  iCal > Preferences > Accounts?
    Can you provide a screen shot of your calendar sidebar.
    While you answer those questions, some troubleshooting to try:
    Try dragging one of your other calendars above this calendar that won't delete and then quit / re-open iCal and attempt to delete the calendar in question.
    Failing that:
    1. First make an iCal backup:  Click on each calendar on the left hand side of iCal one at a time highlighting it's name and then going to File Export > Export and saving the resulting calendar file to a logical location for safekeeping.
    2. Go to iCal > Quit iCal
    3. Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical
    Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
    4. Launch iCal and test.
    If the issue persists at this point:
    Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical
    Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
    Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove them all.)
    ---NOTE: Removing these files may remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.

    Alright, now that's out of the way, heres the error i get.
    Adobe After Effects CS3 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

    This happens every time i try to import any kind of file. And I'm running the trial version of AE btw.
    Now heres the things i have already tried.
    1)Reinstalling After Effects repeatedly.
    2)updating quick time
    3)Deleting the pref file
    4)removed any and all plug-ins
    5)Deleted the OpenGL file
    6)changed by screen resolution.
    7)closed down anti-virus programs
    8)Tried various ways of importing files, like drag and drop
    9)tried importing different files.
    10)Restarting my computer after attempting the all above^
    I have also been to the general specialist website already thank you very much.
    Edit: Now i have also tried uninstalling quick time and all of the video codec packs on my computer, this also didn't help (i did remember to restart afterwards)
    Edit: Also, i started a new thread because nothing in any of the other threads on this same or similar errors was at all helpful to me.
    edit3: i might also add that i have after effects 6.5 and it works just fine, though its much older.

  • Access Denied Using REST in SharePoint 2013 and InfoPath 2013 environment

    So here is the story. I developed a simple application in InfoPath 2013 (saving as InfoPath 2010) and published to a SharePoint 2010 server. 
    A major component to my form is the use of REST to query a SharePoint list. Everything works fine and dandy through the web browser within the SharePoint 2010 environment. Now that I have moved the source list to SharePoint 2013, saved the form as InfoPath
    2013, reset the REST data connection, and published to SharePoint 2013, I get the following message on the Form Load.

  • IMac 24" Causing Interference?

    Currently have a 24" iMac 2.33ghz Core 2 Duo\2gb\750gb\10.4.8.
    As well as suffering poor wireless performance (slow transfer, unsteady connection), it appears to be interfering with other equipment in the house.
    Whenever my external hard drive is plugged in, all radios in the house become unlistenable and my ADSL connection drops out. I have eliminated all other possibilities and it is down to the iMac-External HDD combination.
    With the hard drive plugged into my iBook, no interference or drop outs occur.
    I'm thinking perhaps something is amiss inside and the wireless antenna is broadcasting interference from the USB port/HDD? Its a strange phenomenon.
    Anybody else experienced anything like this?

    Folks who have downloaded and installed the 802.11n Enabler for the Core 2 Duos have reported dramatically increased wireless range and usability.

    I realize this may not help with the external HDD interference, but it should make your wireless experience better. A question for troubleshooting this issue. Have you turned off the AirPort card in you Mac and still experienced thi radio interference?

  • IPhone 5 battery drain since iOS 8.2 update

    hello,
    my name is Udi, from Israel.
    i have an iPhone 5 which i purchased in June 2013.
    since the beginning, i have always kept the battery saving "rules", including correct charging of a lithium ion battery, auto-brightness off, reduce motion on, push notifications off, background app refresh off, cellular data off when not in use, etc. etc.
    since updating to iOS 8, my battery life has decreased a little. but since updating to iOS 8.2 a few days ago, i have experienced, what is in my standards, a serious battery drain. e.g. when i sleep, with my iPhone on airplane mode at night battery decreases by ~15%.
    i have tried everything, including restoring the phone and using a backup.
    what can i do?
    will a restore from scratch (without using a backup) help?

    If this does not help, get your phone checked by visiting an Authorized Apple Service Provider or Apple Store next to your place, or contact Apple Support and talk to them. They can check the battery online.

  • How can I get my Mac to detect my wireless printer?

    I recently upgraded to yosemite and my Mac no longer recognizes my canon pima printer (wi-fi connection). I deleted the printer on the printer list after I received a connection error with the intention of adding it back and now cannot get my Mac to detect the printer to add it. I installed the updated driver from canon's site. Thank you for your help.
