Quicktime multicast

Dear all,
We are developing and streaming video platform, encoding the video in h.264, and then encapsulated in rtp packets.
We are trying differents approachs, namely unicast and multicast.
In unicast we are sending the stream to QTSS, with the client connecting to QTSS to view either a live or pre-recorded content.
Our big issue is with live streaming, in which QTSS acts as a simple relay ... it seems unnecessary as the only thing done is a previous rtsp initialization.
This is why we are trying to use multicast. Maybe we are wrong in our approach, but isn't possible to stream just the rtp packets generated by the encoder to a multicast address and then the client connects directly using this multicast address? (In this scenario we don't have QTSS)
Can Quicktime play multicast streams directly? It is needed any session protocol(RTSP,SAP,SIP)? It is mandatory the use of QTSS to view multicast streams?
Thanks in advance,
A.Silva

Can you say the steps you took to make the movie that the viewer use? I've done multicast, and I've tried typing in the IP numbers and not got too far, but when I did an export movie, and used that, the other machine saw the feed right away.

  • Quicktime Multicast Broadcast locks-up/crashes Airports

    We are experimenting with QT Broadcast which works like a charm in unicast mode. However, what we really need to do is generate a couple of streams of h.264 video in multicast. We have managed to get it working fairly easily, however the multicast seems to cause our assorted Airports (all extremes, some of .11n) to lockup. The freeze usually lasts 20 to 30 seconds. The problem will ping pong around the network as long as the multicast is up.
    The topology is roughly 25 Airports on a moderately sizable campus network with a dozen or so switches running 10/100 mbps. we are using a 10.x.x.x address space internally with not particular subnetting. I've tried fiddling with things like the packet size (the TTL is set to 1) with no particular improvement. We are using the default multicast address settings provided by QTB.
    I would love some suggestions on getting this to work.

    And, piggybacking on tjk's queries:
    Do you have one AC adapter that stays in the office and another that travels with the Powerbook outside the office?
    Does the office have any sort of power-conditioning equipment installed, i.e. to smooth voltage irregularities, filter out noise, etc?
    Is your use of the PB at the office subtly different from your use elsewhere, i.e. are there keystroke combinations you use more often elsewhere, and not at the offfice? Particularly ones involving the left Command key? How many other places have you used the Powerbook in, where the problems have occurred? Are we talking about two or three other places, or a dozen?
    Unless an odd power-supply issue is in play, it seems exceedingly strange that the office should provide immmunity from whatever affects the PB everywhere else (except at the Apple Store, of course). Are you quite sure these freezes never happen at the office?
    I've never heard of any aspect of one's wireless configuration (or malfunction of same) causing a whole computer to freeze, so I strongly doubt that your networking arrangements in any location are implicated here.
    If your computer were freezing up unpredictably wherever it goes, tjk and I would both immediately have urged you to look into the Orange Ribbon Cable Issue/Fix, as it has come to be known around here. Unless your PB is the 400MHz or 500MHz model, which don't suffer from that problem, I suggest that you try the free, quick and easy ribbon cable fix just to see whether it makes any difference.
    Please keep us posted on your progress.

  • Technical quicktime support?!

    where do i get fast & cheap technical support concerning my quicktime & multicast questions?
    i have a quicktime pro serial number.

    Hmmmm, exactly what to do consider cheap?
    If you have AppleCare then technical support is FREE for 3 years. If you don't have AC, then tech support I believe is around $40.<--- Cheap enough for ya?
    Apple Discussions is FREE.

    Hi Wouter,
    My first question would be what software build you are running on your 5508 controllers?  Also, is multicast properly configured on the wired side for bonjour?

  • Multicast in JMStudio??

    Hi!
    I want to send a video stream to a multicasta address.
    I use JMStudio to transmit the stream. If I specify a unicast address everything works fine. But if I specify a multicast address (e.g. 192.168.100.0) the client does not receive anything.
    Does anyone have a solution for this problem?
    Deike

    Hello Deike,
    1) How are you able to multicast the data to thataddress as given in
    your example. typiucally you can't use addr startingfrom 192.x.x.x
    for multicast. I am wondering how you can say thatyou are
    multicasting to this addr. I use an IP address which has 255 instead of the host
    address.
    For example in a class A network it would be
    127.255.255.255,
    class B 149.243.255.255 an in class C (in my case)
    192.168.100.255.
    So the packets are sent to each host in the network.
    That really works.### I guess NOT. You may not be multicasting it but broadcasting the packets. Since yu don't have routers yet, you won't know the traffic. Check it out. Probably thats the reason why the client is able to receive the packets even though they have NOT yet subscribed to multicast group.
    >
    You can't have your client's either to subscribe tothis multicast
    address. If you are trying to use anything in thatrange, then its
    totally invalid.How does my client subscribe to a multicast address?
    And why does he have to?### why does he have to ... hummm. Trickier to answer. I am thinking how,,,,,,, hummm hey c'mon thats how the things have to work I say ,,,
    >
    Refer to rfc1340 for the valid addresses. This rfcmight also address

    >
    2) You can give a quick try by multicasting toaddress 224.0.0.1. All
    your clients should get the data provided you haveONLY one IP
    router/ IP switch between them.
    3) make sure your IP routers/ IP switches can handlethe multicasted
    data & process them correctly. probably you may haveto configure
    them to do so.I haven't used a router yet because my server is part
    of the two networks in which I tested my applet.### try going thru router & see if the clients still receive the packets,,,

    The QT movie opened promptly for me in Firefox 4.0. The fact that it's intermittent for you with FF indicates that it's a connection issue and not an iWeb issue. For some reason not all of the files are being loaded by FF at those times. (The server is probably being run by an Ohio State graduate )

  • Stop or Redirect RTCP Multicast via SDP Files (Help!)

    I've got a piece of hardware (Optibase MM400 encoder) that generates both an SDP file and a multicast RTP video stream. (I've configured it to omit the audio stream.) The SDP looks like this:
    (Note: I've obscured some of the IPs with letters)
    v=0
    o=INGESTSERVERA7 723 75540417 IN IP4 AAA.BBB.239.243

    The problem is that both VLC and QuickTime spit out multicast packets in response to the streaming video--e.g. RTCP. (I'll explain why this is a problem in a followup message.)
    I tried using the RTCP bandwidth specifiers (b=RR: and b=RS:) in both the session and media contexts, but it they didn't affect the RTCP packet rate (one every five seconds).
    Here's how I used them in the session context:
    v=0
    o=INGESTSERVERA7 723 75540417 IN IP4 AAA.BBB.239.243

    a=mpeg4-esid:224
    I also tried it once with the "b=AS:" value set to the total size of the media stream.
    Next, I tried to use the "a=rtcp:" attribute to redirect the packets to a different IP (unicast) and then just a different port.
    Here's how I used it in the session context:
    v=0
    o=INGESTSERVERA7 723 75540417 IN IP4 AAA.BBB.239.243

    ...then just thet port...
    a=rtcp:11223
    This didn't affect the RTCP packets from VLC or QuickTime one bit, while changing the media port did have an effect--proving that the SDP files were being read.
    On last thing I tried was the "a=rtcp:unicast reflection" attribute, hoping it would return traffic to a unicast address that I could blackhole.
    Here's how I used it:
    v=0
    o=INGESTSERVERA7 723 75540417 IN IP4 AAA.BBB.239.243
    s=MM-400
    t=0 0
    a=rtcp:a=rtcp:unicast reflection
    a=rtcp:11223 IN IP4 10.10.10.10
    a=x-authentication:A989B14958B5089A940C1201
    a=isma-compliance:1,1,1
    a=mpeg4-iod: "data:application/mpeg4-iod;base64,AoILAE8BAQABAQOBJgABQIhkYXRhOmFwcGxpY2F0aW9uL21wZWc0LW9kLWF1O2Jhc2U2NCxBVWtCUndVZkEwTUE0QVFFT3lBUkFGQUFBQURhd0FBQTJzQUZMQUFBQWJBQkFBQUJzbFZWQUFBQnRRa0FBQUVCQUFBQklRQ080QUFnSXlBQWFBQkNnRWdBOVFXRURoUmpCZ0VEBA0BBQAAyAAAAAAAAAAABgkBAAAAAAAAAAADWQACQDZkYXRhOmFwcGxpY2F0aW9uL21wZWc0LWJpZnMtYXU7YmFzZTY0LHdCQVNZUVNJVUVVRlB3QT0EEgINAAAUAAAAAAAAAAAFAwAAQAYJAQAAAAAAAAAA"
    ...and still, the VLC/QuickTime Player clients continued to spit out RTCP multicast traffic on the port (11111) following the media port (11110).
    Anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Surely VLC and/or QuickTime has implemented a solution.
    Note, this problem was identified in the QuickTime forums a few times, but never addressed:

    One last note: I successfully delivered the SDP file as a local file, a web file, and wrapped within a SAP multicast.. all with the same results.

    For the purposes of completeness, and evidence that I've been digging for the answer, here's some overview and reference information.
    Intro (skip if you know about RTCP and its downsides)
    For people just running into this problem. VLC and QuickTime Player send out a multicast packet every 5 seconds in response to multicast RTP stream(s) identified via SDP files. These packets are "RTCP", which is sent by RTP clients to report on the quality of the streams from the client perspective.
    The problem is, these packets can overwhelm a system with thousands of clients:
    * All client packets have to be delivered to all other clients (huge complexity)
    * Routers have to maintain giant lists of the multicast senders
    * Many systems are only efficient for single-source multicast traffic (think satellites)
    Note: As I understand it, the RTCP multicast packets are sent to all clients so that each client can throttle the overall RTCP bandwidth to reasonable levels. While this is clever solution, it doesn't reduce the number of multicast senders--just the frequency of their packets.
    Possible Solutions
    I've read through a lot of the SDP/RTP specs. It seems like the preferred (by the spec authors) solution is to redirect the RTCP traffic to a unicast location and then rebroadcast the RTCP traffic from the same single source.
    This spec mentions the "rtcp-unicast" option:
    Draft Spec: RTCP with Unicast Feedback (http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-avt-rtcpssm-17)
    This spec specifies means of directing RTCP traffic to specific ports/IPs (presumably unicast included):
    RFC 3605: RTCP attribute in SDP (http://www.packetizer.com/rfc/rfc3605/)
    Another potential solution (ideal in my case), is to pinch the bandwidth for RTCP traffic down to zero, effectively stopping all RTCP traffic from the clients.
    This spec specifies the "b=AS:", "b=RS:", and "b=RR:" bandwidth modifiers:
    RFC 3556: Session Description Protocol (SDP) Bandwidth Modifier (http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc3556.html)
    Other Specs
    RFC 4566: SDP: Session Description Protocol (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4566)
    * Replaced RFC 2327: SDP: Session Description Protocol (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4566)
    RFC 3550: RTP: A Transport Protocol for Real-Time Applications (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3550.txt)
    * Replaced RFC 1889: RTP: A Transport Protocol for Real-Time Applications (http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc1889.txt)
    RFC 3890: A Transport Independent Bandwidth Modifier for the Session Description Protocol (SDP)
    RFC 4585: Extended RTP Profile for Real-time Transport Control Protocol (RTCP)-Based Feedback (RTP/AVPF)
    RFC 1890: RTP Profile for Audio and Video Conferences with Minimal Control
    Question: Which RFC(s) is QuickTime compliant with?

  • SDI Capture Card that works with QuickTime Streaming Server/Encoder

    I can't seem to find any major SDI video card manufacturer that has drivers which work on a MAC OSX Server using QuickTime Streaming Server & QuickTime Broadcaster. Apple has suggested we try LiveChannel and I have yet to contact them. I have however contacted AJA, BlackMagic, View cast, etc. and none have tested their cards against QuickTime Streaming Server & QuickTime Broadcaster.
    We need to be able to do Multicasting
    Any help is appreciated!

    Sorry but I think I was impatient when I wrote that.
    After monitoring the .upcoming file, I saw the new entries appear after a while.
    You can modify the .playlist file at runtime without updating QTSS. It will read that file automatically after a while.
    It seems to work fine now.
    Thanks

  • Problem : Audio drops out on multicast

    We are using Quicktime to view multicasted feeds. We read in the SDP file, Quicktime goes off, does the connect...all is well..until you try and fast forward to get rid of the latency (customer wants < 100 ms, which Quicktime can do fine). If you get to the end of the buffering, video still works fine, but audio drops out and does not come back. There is also some audio pops while the fastforward occurs. This behaviour is the same on both the standard player and the wrapped version.
    Have not seen anything in COM interface that can let me see how much buffering is left, otherwise I could simple keep poking fastforward until I have minimal buffer left.

    There are only two possible causes I can think of:
    1. The fiel your'e using out of FCP is bad.
    2. The encode that DVDSP created is bad.
    > After exporting to DVD using compressor, the audio on the DVD completely goes away 49 seconds in.  It's there on the master in FCP, but not on the DVD.  It goes away in simulator too.  <
    How did you export out of FCP? I always use a self-contained movie. If the movie includes the audio, there's a problem in DVDSP.
    If you are exporting to MPEG2 out of FCP, you must figure out a way to check the audio portion of the file.
    If it goes away in Simulator there's an issue happening right at that point. Does it play in the DVDSP timeline? Does it play in the media viewer of DVDSP? Can you open the exported movie in QT Player?
    Is there anything significant about the 49 second location?

    Anyone know if its possible to hook up QTSS to a NewTek Tricaster output?
    The Newtek Tricaster only outputsa unicast Windows Media stream but we need our users to access it via the QTSS so its multicast.
    Thanks

    Hi Braja,
    I don't have an answer for you but that looks like a router issue to me. However, I don't know the quicktime streaming server very well at all. I would try reposting in Discussions-->Digital Life--> Quicktime--> Quicktime for Mac OS and/or in Discussions-->Mac OSX technologies--> Networking and the Web. Good Luck!

  • Unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie, camera not recognized.

    I am unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie.
    I have been dealing with this problem for quite a while now, and I think I have tried everything posted on these forums regarding this issue. I have been to the Quicktime, iMovie, and this FCP forum looking for the solution. Hopefully someone has a suggestion that I have missed or have not tried yet. I have a Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger 10.4. I am running Quicktime 7.04, and FCP 4.5.
    My problem is this… I am unable to capture from my Canon ZR-200 Mini DV camera, using Final Cut Pro, iMovie and also Quicktime. FCP says no camera recognized. iMovie says no camera attached, and Quicktime says no recording device found. In FCP, I am using the Firewire Basic setting, and NTSC DV settings. I have captured in FCP with the same camera several times in the past. I think the problem started when I upgraded to OSX 10.4, or one of the Quicktime upgrades.
    Here are the details…
    - Camera is connect via Firewire. I have tried the built in ports, as well as a Firewire Carbus card.
    - OSX recognizes the Canon ZR-200 in the System Profiler, so I know the computer sees the camera.
    - I have tried the camera on a Windows XP machine, and capture works perfectly, so I know the camera is functioning properly in VTR mode.
    - Deleted my FCP pref’s using FCP Rescue.
    - Deleted the Quicktime receipts, and re-installed Quicktime 7.04
    - Reverted back to Quicktime 7.01
    - Set the audio to 44.1 in the the Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder
    - Tried the “GarageBand” fix, opening the programing, playing a few notes and closing.
    - I have installed Quicktime using the program “Yank” to completely delete Quicktime and re-install.
    I may have tried more solutions, but these are the fixes that I can recall.
    If anyone has any others suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
    Brent

    Hi Brent:
    Although it looks as if you have tried all of the 'fixes' that are normally suggested here, please read through this Apple Article to see if some obscure thing applies to you.

  • On Dell core2duo - QuickTime PictureViewer does not work

    I have some considerable problems with QuickTime's PictureViewer application. The system has Windows XP pro and a core 2 Duo processor running at 1.86Ghz - also has 2 Gb ddram. Norton internet security is installed and up to date.
    Once the PictureViewer application is launched and used to view a file, the shut down by the X, the UI is still running, even though the application has stopped. I have ACDsee8 as default picture viewer.
    I also carry IrfanView to preview single files. No files are default in it.
    Is there a trick to using the PictureViewer application?

    Howdy neighbor,
    I used to live in Maryland and loved the Amish shops and drivers (carriages) along Route 6 and 301.
    On the Mac OS Picture Viewer has been replaced by our "Preview" application (part of OS X) and Windows users still get it installed as part of QuickTIme.
    It is a relic of the old days of Web use and most modern Windows no longer use Picture Viewer in anything they do day to day.
    It appears as though you have assigned image formats to open in your image (viewing/editing) software and not open in Picture Viewer.
    QuickTime Control Panel can remove most of these file associations that force Picture Viewer to open the file and you should then be able to assign the application you want to use.

    Can you start QuickTime on your computer?
    You'll probably have to search for the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and use it to remove QuickTime Player and iTunes. Then download and install the iTunes again.

    windows installer has stopped working
    a problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
    windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is avabilable.

    Head into your Windows Update. Are there any new updates available for you? If so, and you install, does that clear up the error message?
