R2 XP to Windows 7 Migrations - User State Data Restore Fails

The client I am at is trying to migrate about 800 XP clients to Windows 7 before the April deadline.  They have ConfigMgr R2 and are aware of the limitations with ADK 8.1 for Windows XP.  We are following the following ConfigMgr Blog:
https://blogs.technet.com/b/configmgrteam/archive/2013/09/12/how-to-migrate-user-data-from-win-xp-to-win-8-1-with-system-center-2012-r2-configmgr.aspx
We have created the separate TS to capture the User state on the XP box.  That works find.  We have created the TS to deploy Windows 7 and also restore the users state.  That is where the issues are.  The image deploys fine however the
User data is never restored.   When we do a 7 to 7 Migration everything works great.
Below is an example of the loadstatescan.log file from another client but it is exactly what we are seeing here as well:
2009-11-26 14:00:35, Error
[0x000000] The account XXXXXXX\admin is chosen for migration, but the target does not have account XXXXXX\admin. See documentation on /lac, /lae, /ui, /ue and /uel options.
2009-11-26 14:00:35, Info                  [0x000000] Failed.[gle=0x00000006]
2009-11-26 14:00:35, Info                  [0x000000]   Unable to create a
local account because /lac was not specified[gle=0x00000006]
On both TS we have uncheck the box that say to copy and restore local accounts.  However, as you can see in the error above the loadstate is trying to restore the local Admin account.  Is there a work around?  I have seen other post about
this but no one has either updated them with their fix or there hasn't been a fix?
Kristopher Turner | Not the brightest bulb but by far not the dimmest bulb.

So I am not sure if this is the "technical fix" for my problem. Something I don't think should fix it but at least it fixes it for now. On the task that runs the capture user data the default settings is to capture all user data unless you specify other
custom settings.  We have been using gather all data. However, in the restore user data step there is actually a check box to allow local accounts to be restored.  Once we check that box our XP to Windows migrations run without an issue.
First, why isn't there a check in the user capture to disable local accounts if there is a check box for it in the restore user data? Anyway, that is our fix for now.  It is working but still a little confused.

  • How to manually recover user state data saved to a State Migration Point

    Hi,
In SCCM 2012, how would you recover the User State saved to the State Migration Point manually?
In SCCM 2007 you could do what was outlined here:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrosd/thread/159affd3-1726-4829-a0f4-0c875481fc11
However this does not work for SCCM 2012 because the User State Recovery key so long that it cannot be used with a loadstate command (Loadstate commands cannot be longer than 256 characters)
Previously you could also have just opened the User.mig file using Windows Easy Transfer and entered the User State Recovery key stored in SCCM - however in SCCM 2012 this does not work either!
I really need to recover the contents for a user who got a new computer (old one stolen) and requires data from a previous user state capture on the State Migration Point.

    Hi,
It seems something changed in SCCM 2012.
I've got the same problem and after couple hours of research I found MS article that only helped me -
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824962.aspx
In SCCM server I run this command:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.0\Assessment and Deployment Kit\User State Migration Tool\amd64>usmtutils.exe /extract C:\tmp\_MIG\USMT.MIG C:\tmp\_MIG\Extract /decrypt /keyfile:C:\tmp\_MIG\Key.txt
    and received necessary data.

  • Windows 8 "The user Profile Service service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded."

    Hello All,
OK here is what i'm trying to figure out. First off i am new to my company and still trying to learn the in and outs but have already been thrown into the lions cage by myself. I inherited a network that is run on Windows Server 2008 R2. The domain consists
of XP,Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines. Here is the issue i am facing.
Every once in a while (usually after a few hours of inactivity) when a user goes to log into the machine they receive an error stating  "The user Profile Service service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded.". However
this only happens to the windows 8 machines and like i mentioned earlier it usually happens after a brief inactivity period. Now restarting the machine always works(100% of the time) but this super annoying. I have also completely restarted the server just
to find out the problem resurfaced later that day.
Any idea on how to fix this issue? Like i mentioned this only happens to the Windows 8 machines. Is there something i should do on my server to prevent this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you

  • How to migrate user's data from Panther G3 to MacBook Snow Leopard?

Migration Assistant isn't helping at the moment. Over the network, it just spins saying "looking for other computers" even though I've seen and acted on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3253  -- although that doesn't relate to Panther so it isn't right for that. Anyway, so I forget doing it over the network.
I copy two users' entire directories on the Panther G3 machine to an external hard drive. I plug that into the MacBook, open Migration Assistant and choose from a disk. Now it just spins indefinitely where it's supposed to allow me to select the disk -- it can't even show the disk (the disk has mounted fine).
I'm now thinking Migration Assistant is completely useless -- better not touched?
So I haven't got a clue how to get two users from a G3 machine to the new MacBook. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Interestingly, it looks like a mounted disk image of a full system is recognized by Snow Leopard's Migration Assistant. Although the disk image is not bootable, it presents as a separate volume "with OS X installed", and apparently this is enough.
One of my external drives contains a  sparsebundle disk image of my oid G5 Leopard Mac that I created with either CCC or SuperDuper just before that computer died. I just tried mounting it by double-clicking it, and then running Snow Leopard's Migration Assistant, choosing the option to migrate "From a Time Machine backup or other disk." The mounted volume was recognized as a "disk", and all its contents were accessible as items to migrate. I didn't actually run it.
CCC makes it easy, though, to protect the other stuff as you suggested and then clone to the whole partition rather than to a disk image.

  • Folio13 Windows 7 pro 64, system image, restore fails

I have (10) HP Folio13, running Windows 7 pro 64, I have used the Windows 7 system tools, to create a system image onto a USB 2.0 external Seagate harddrive. It created fine.. to test it I tried to restore the image onto a different HP Folio13.
I hooked up an external USB cd-rom/dvd reader/write to either USB ports, and the USB Seagate hard drive to the other free USB port, thats on the HP Folio13. and I'm using a Windows 7 system restore disc.  If the USB cd/dvd write is hooked up to the USB port on the left hand side, it crashes stating it can't find the x:\sources\recovery\tools\hp recovery manager.exe this application has request the runtime to terminate it in an unsual way please contact the application support team for more infomation, if i shutdown and place the cd/dvd drive into the USB port on the right hand side. it works.. and boots correctly but can't find the Windows system image, that exists on the USB external harddrive.  I know that the USB windows system image is valid.. I was able to restore it too a differnet HP laptop a 8560w.. with the same boot disk, but since the HP 8560w has a built in cd reader.. all works well.  I have updated the BIOS to the lastest as of today (F.18) I have updated the USB drivers, I have tired using F11 on the HP Folio and tried to restore it from that, but what comes up, does not support a system image restore, F11 only works for system restores..  I need some aid.. I have a valid Windows 7 system image on a external USB 2.0 hard drive. I would like to restore it to a HP Folio13.

  • SMPs not deleting user state as configured

We have CM2012 SP1 R2.  Some of our SMPs are running out of space.  They are configured to delete user state data after 14 days but I see in some cases there is older user state data sitting on the SMP taking up space.
First question is why is the user state data not deleting after 14 days as configured on the SMP properties?
Second question is, is it safe to delete these folders manually?  Or is there a better method to "clean-up" the old user state folders?
    Thanks much!
    FP

Just a public service announcement...  Don't delete the whole directory that holds user state info, just delete the USMT sub-folder and leave the large cryptic-named folder on the state store intact.  If you delete the whole folder then SMS_Executive
service will start to crash and bring down the site server that your SMP is on.  For more info see this article:

  • How Front End pool deals with fail over to keep user state?

Hello to all, I searched a lot of articles to understand how Lync 2010 keeps user state if a fail happens in a Front Pool node, but didn't find anything clear.
I found a MS info. about ths topic : " The Front End Servers maintain transient information—such as logged-on state and control information for an IM, Web, or audio/video (A/V) conference—only for the duration of a user’s session.
    This configuration
is an advantage because in the event of a Front End Server failure, the clients connected to that server can quickly reconnect to another Front End Server that belongs to the same Front End pool. "
As I read, the client uses DNS to reconnect to another Front End in the pool. When it reconnects to an available server, does he lose what he/she was doing at Lync client? Can the server that is now hosting his section recover all
"user's session data"? Is positive, how?
       Regards, EEOC.

The presence information and other dynamic user data is stored in the RTCDYN database on the backend SQL database in a 2010 pool:
http://blog.insidelync.com/2011/04/the-lync-server-databases/  If you fail over to another pool member, this pool member has access to the same data.

Capturing user state........ Retaining files for a specific time?
Can I retain the user files/data for a specific time as a copy after capturing user states then restoring them? If so what's the procedure and location of the files?
    tconners

If you are using a SMP, yes, this is built-in functionality. The files are located in the location(s) specified on your SMP configuration. You'll also need the computer association that created them because it contains the encryption key.

I am having trouble trying to capture a new Windows 8 image with WDT 2012.
    My Setup -
    Server 2012
    WDS
    MDT 2012
    Windows 8 ADK
    Hyper-V
I have created a new task and I can get the image to successfully deploy the image to a VM but it seems to fail at the Restore User State task.
Once the install Applications task has finished I added a Suspend task so I could customize the image a little. Upon resuming the task sequence is where the above failure message appears. I can see it gets to the next step (which is 'Restore User State')
but that seems to be where is crashes.
Does anyone have any advice on what I might be doing wrong or what I can do to resolve the above issue?

WAIK being installed was probably your issue so I wouldn't bother disabling the restore task. It is used to migrate user data, docs, and settings on refreshes, not new builds. It doesn't affect CopyProfile, just note that data will be migrated on refreshes so
some aspects may change, ie wallpaper, shortcuts, etc but what gets migrated with USMT can also be configured.

  • User State Migration using SMP with config manager 2012 R2

    Hi ,
I have SMP at primary site and need to migrate XP and 7 machines using this SMP (using USMT),
what are the steps do i need to define in TS so that usmt can use State migration point for user setting\data backup?
Another challenge i see it with XP since we are deciding to take 2 phase approach, that means we will backup data using 1 TS (3 step TS) and then restore data as part of another TS that will install windows 8.1 also with user state restore.
Any pointers if we need to define anything special in TS (migration store etc.) or since its SMP, TS should able to take care of finding it automatically and backup\restore user state?
We have MDT based TS, just wondering if we need to define anything inside CS.ini file related to SMP?
Any pointers will be appreciated. Thanks

  • Dynamic computers collection based on User State Migration associations

At our company, we have a group of computers with the follwoing situation:
User works on machine with WindowsXP, there is already prepared new machine, with Windows 7 installed, and delivered to user. I have prepared 2 task sequences - "State Capture" and "State Restore", both deployed to separate device collections.
Now, what I do is create old/new computer association in the User State Migration tab, add old computer to Capture collection, let the TS complete, add new computer to Restore collection, and let the TS complete. After all these steps user can begin to work
on the new machine with his/her profile and data migrated.
But I would like to speed things a little bit, and allow my
colleagues to perform such "migration" by simply adding computers association. To achieve that, I need to create a query, that would assign computers to collections, based on the existing associations in the User State Migration tab. The problem is,
I fail to find appropriate rule in query wizard. Is it possible at all?
I need computer to be added to Capture collection upon detection of it being source computer in the USM tab, and removed from collection upon finished TS, with the target computer added to Restore collection at the same moment and removed from the collection
    upon finished restore TS.
I would greatly appreciate any help or pointing into right direction.

    Hi,
There is a blog about removing computer from collection after SCCM task sequence. But it is for SCCM 2007. You could have a look on this blog to see if the script can be edited to meet your requirements.

I use USMT 5.0 to capture the user state running on Xp and restored with USMT 6.3 for Win 8.1 (Now run the hotfix from Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2910552 and it´s work )
Also try SMP, capture user state ... but not restores either ...
