RAC OS Prerequisites

I believe for 10g R2 RAC installation on 2 or more nodes all the nodes in the cluster must have the same operating system and also at the same patch level.
I have gone throught the install guides available on OTN but it talks only about the minimum OS requirement and various packages required.
I am looking for a document which mentions that all the nodes in the cluster must have the same OS / Patch level.
Thanks & Regards,
Ajith

Ajith,
The requirement is that all the nodes have the same O/S major version. Therefore, you can infer that they don't need to all have the same O/S patches if some of those patches do not relate to Oracle's operation.
However a key concept of Grid Computing is Manageablity, which includes establishing and maintaining standard configurations. Therefore, to reduce the burden of managing many nodes in a cluster, you should strive to keep all the servers configured identically in terms of O/S packages and patches, whenever possible.
It also helps emensely when diagnosing errors if all the machines are configured identically.

  • Installation of RAC with ASM on Solaris

    Hello Everybody
I have to install and config oracle 10g RAC and ASM on Solaris, and as per my understanding network prerequisite is 3 IP's for each node,
    1) A public IP's registered on DNS and
    2) A virtual IP's registered on DNS, but NOT defined in the servers. can be defined later during Oracle Clusterware Install, And
    3) a private IP only known to the servers in the RAC configuration, to be used for the interconnect.
    The scenario is like
The Servers & the Storage are in different Network and hence the public registered IP address & Virtual IP address is not possible. Only Private IP Address can be possible, But both the servers are accessible from to me Please confirm on the same.
    My question is
Is is possible to build the RAC and ASM only with the private IP without the public and the virtual IP, if yes how?
The setup is not going to be the part of any production or any development environment, I am new to this and just wanted to test the RAC installation with ASM.
Your inputs or suggestion are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for your time.

    Hi,
for a 10g RAC you need:
    - a host-IP for every node
    - a private IP for every node
    - a virtual IP for every node
Host-IP and Private IP must be assigned to both hosts and conenction between the hosts using either the host-IP or the private IP must be possible.
Is is possible to build the RAC and ASM only with the private IP without the public and the virtual IP, if yes how?The term "private" and "public" does not refer to public IPs. It refers to the fact "private" is only for communication between the nodes and public for communication between the client and database.
For a successful installation you need at least these three IPs on each system.
So for instance your public IPs reside in the network 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 and your private interconnect network can be 192.168.2.0/255.255.255.0. Both networks consists of private (i.e. non-routeable) IPs.

  • Oracle 11gR2 RAC setup with ASM option running on two nodes . Seeking help

    Hi ,
Recently we have migrated to 11gR2 extended RAC for one of our application using ASM . Its a two node RAC setup . We are using ASM Normal redundancy feature maintaining two failure group .
I need few clarification regarding our new DR set up .
We are planning to have EMC SRDF replication from any of node storage ( Either 1 or 2) to the DR disks .
Its stright to use when we use the normal file systems . In case of ASM , I am not sure how this replication will work ? and on which level the replication should happen ?
Do i need an ASM instance up and running on DR server , Which will recognize the disks as it is once DR disks are separated from prod replication and assigned to the server ?
What should be prerequisite on DR server before we can start the srdf replication (EMC) and make it work .
Thanks for All your Valuble suggestion .

Before you decide to use EMC replication give considerable thought to the fact that you are introducing a single point of failure.
Hardware snapshot replication is very fast. That is all it is. If you database crashes because of corruption on disk ... your replica will be equally corrupt.
What is fast can not do what DataGuard does ... verify quality. If the point is DR. Go with DataGuard unless EMC is willing to, in writing (not verbally) give you a guarantee (in hard cash) to cover all costs if they replicate bad blocks and it causes an outage.
And just so no one thinks I'm picking o EMC ... the same weakness exists with all of the other storage vendor's products.

  • Oracle Rac on Solaris Containers

We are planning to implement Oracle 11G RAC on Solaris 10 using non-global zone. RAC is now officially certified on Solaris containers.
But we are still investigating whether zone Cluster (Using Solaris Cluster) is the prerequisite to have Oracle RAC on Solaris non-global zone.
This oracle document *(Supported Virtualization and Partitioning Technologies for Oracle Database and RAC Product Releases [ID 1173831.1])* stated that:
_"*Oracle Solaris Containers are supported with Oracle RAC 10gR2 and 11gR1 (with Oracle Solaris Cluster on SPARC64). Solaris version 10 Update 7 or later (patches 141444-09, 143055-01, 142900-06, 143137-04 "md patch") with Oracle Solaris Cluster 3.3 and 3.2u2 patched to 126106-39 or later."*_
Does it mean that Oracle RAC is supported on Solaris Container only with Solaris Cluster?
In other word does Oracle RAC is supported on Solaris Non-Global zones without using Solaris Cluster?

It was my understanding too. Do you have any source document where it is specifically noted that solaris cluster(Zone Cluster) is needed for RAC?
Please check this document www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/systems-hardware-architecture/deploying-rac-in-containers-168438.pdf, nowhere it is said that Solaris Cluster is needed.

  • Prerequisite "Clusterware version" fail while applying 10.2.0.4 pachset

I've installed Oracle Clusterware and Oracle RAC 10gR2 on two nodes.
Now I'd like to apply latest pachset 10.2.0.4 available for Linux 32bit.
This is the output about my current versions:
[oracle@node1 ~]$ crsctl query crs activeversion
CRS active version on the cluster is [10.2.0.1.0]
[oracle@node1 ~]$ crsctl query crs softwareversion
CRS software version on node [node1] is [10.2.0.1.0]
Why am I getting the following prerequisite error ?
    Checking Oracle Clusterware version ...
Check complete. The overall result of this check is: Failed <<<<
Problem: The 'active' version of Oracle Clusterware is not 10.2.0.4.0.
Recommendation: You must upgrade all nodes of the cluster to Oracle Clusterware 10.2.0.4.0. If you have upgraded some but not all of the nodes to use the 10.2.0.4.0 version of Oracle Clusterware, then the 'active' version will not be 10.2.0.4.0. You must upgrade all nodes in the cluster to Oracle Clusterware 10.2.0.4.0 before proceeding with this installation.
Can I simply check this prerequisite (as User Verified) and continue to upgrade (first) the Oracle Clusterware and then the database ?
    Thanks,
    Marco

Looks like you are attempting to patch the ORACLE_HOME to 10.2.0.4 before patching the CRS. You have to first patch the CRS home to 10.2.0.4 and then your $OH.
Or possibly you are really intending to patch the CRS, but apparently you are selecting the destination home as $OH instead of $CRS_HOME.
    HTH
    Thanks

  • RAC Install fails with "OCR upgrade failed with (-1073741819) on 10.2.0

I am trying to install RAC 10.2.0 with two Server 2003 R2 nodes connected to a fiber channel SAN. I have set up the shared storage, created the extended partitions, and setup the unformatted no drive letter volumes. Both servers see the unformatted volumes (and no others do). The preinstallation checks work fine and the installations works fine until the first configuration assistant runs. That would be the "Oracle Clusterware Configuration Assistant". It tries to run crssetup.config.bat and fails on step 3 (configuring OCR Repository) with
    ocr upgrade failed with (-1073741819)
If I uninstall clusterware and try again it will not show the OCR and Voting disks as available disks until I delete the volumes and partitions and recreate them. I have run the precheck batch files and they show everything as good as well. When I define the OCR and Voting drives in the clusterware setup I do not select format or assign drive letter. Every time I try to do the install I get the exact same error.
Is there anything I am missing or some trick or patch I may not have done?

  • 10g setup with add rac option later

    Hi
We have plans of upgrading our production environment to 10g on a seprate machine.
Can we install all cluster ware on that machine and install
oracle 10g then export and import and start using 10g,later once we plan to move to oracle 10g RAC we can use all this setup just by adding one more node.
In short can I install oracle 10g now and move to RAC just by adding node or with minimal impact to production.
Will it work ? If so how can I achive that.
    Thanks in advance

Yes you can install a so called single node RAC. Just take care that all prerequisites are met that later if you add the other node(s) it will work (e.g. If you just have 1 node, it is difficult to check the sharedness of the storage. Or network interfaces that they will be the same when the second node is added etc.).
Also setup ssh for your own node and check with cluvfy.
Installation of a single node RAC is equal to the installation of a multiple node RAC.
    - Install Clusterware then Patch Clusterware to 10.2.0.3
    - Install ASM Home, Patch ASM Home to 10.2.0.3, Configure ASM
    - Install DB Home, Patch DB Home to 10.2.0.3, Configure DB
Before adding the second node use clufvy to check your setup:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/clustering/cvu/cvu_download_homepage.html
Later an additional node can be added from the first node with the addnode.sh script without downtime. Detailed description found here:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/rac.102/b14197/toc.htm
Chapter 10 UNIX or 11 Windows.
Just 1 tip, since a cluster is more complex than a single instance.
Test it for yourself to get experience in installing and adding the node(s), that nothing unexpected happens when doing this on the production server.

  • Problem of using OCFS2 as shared storage to install RAC 10g on VMware

    Hi, all
I am installing a RAC 10g cluster with two linux nodes on VMware. I created a shared 5G disk for the two nodes as shared storage partition. By using OCFS2 tools, i formatted this shared storage partition and successfully auto mounted it on both nodes.
Before installing, i use the command "runcluvfy.sh stage -pre crsinst -n node1,node2" to determine the installation prerequisites. Everything is ok except an error "Could not find a suitable set of interfaces for VIPs.". By searching the web, i found this error could be safely ignored.
The OCFS2 works well on both nodes, i formatted the shared partition as ocfs2 file system and configure o2bc to auto start ocfs service. I mounted the shared disk on both nodes at /ocfs directory. By adding an entry into both nodes' /etc/fstab, this partition can be auto mounted at system boots. I could access files in shared partition on both nodes.
My problem is that, when installing clusterware, at the stage "Specify Oracle Cluster Registry", I enter "/ocfs/OCRFILE" for Specify OCR Location and "/ocfs/OCRFILE_Mirror" for Specify OCR Mirror Location. But got an error as following:
    ----- Error Message ----
The location /ocfs/OCRFILE, entered for the Oracle Cluster Registry(OCR) is not shared across all the nodes in the cluster. Specify a shared raw partition or cluster file system that is visible by the same name on all nodes of the cluster.
    ------ Error Message ---
I don't know why the OUI can't recognize /ocfs as shared partition. On both nodes, using command "mounted.ocfs2 -f", i can get the result:
    Device FS Nodes
    /dev/sdb1 ocfs2 node1, node2
What's the possible wrong? Any help is appreciated!
    Addition information:
    1) uname -r
    2.6.9-42.0.0.0.1.EL
    2) Permission of shared partition
    $ls -ld /ocfs/
    drwxrwxr-x 6 oracle dba 4096 Aug 3 18:22 /ocfs/

    Hello
I am not sure how far this following solution is relevant to your problem (regardless when it was originally posted - may help someone who is reading this thread), here is what I faced and here is how I fixed it:
I was setting up RAC using VMWare. I prepared rac1 [installed OS, configured disks, users, etc] and the made a copy of it as rac2. So far so good. When, as per the guide I was following for RAC configuration, I started OCFS2 configuration, faced the following error on RAC2 when I tried to mount the /dev/adb1:
    ===================================================
    [Root @ *rac2* ~] # mount - t ocfs2 - o datavolume, nointr / dev / sdb1 / ocfs
ocfs2_hb_ctl: OCFS2 DIRECTORY corrupted WHILE reading uuid ocfs2_hb_ctl: OCFS2 DIRECTORY corrupted WHILE reading uuid
mount.ocfs2: Error WHEN attempting TO run / sbin / ocfs2_hb_ctl: "Operation not permitted" mount.ocfs2: Error WHEN attempting TO run / sbin / ocfs2_hb_ctl: "Operation not permitted"
    ===================================================
After a lot of "googling around", I finally bumped into a page, the kind person who posted the solution said [in my words below and more detailed ]:
    o shutdown both rac1 and rac2
o in VMWare, "edit virtual machine settings" for rac1
o remove the disk [make sure you drop the correct one]
o recreate it and select *"allocate all disk space now"* [with same name and in the same directory where it was before]
o start rac1 and login as *"root"* and *"fdisk /dev/sdb"* [or whichever is/was your disk where you r installing ocfs2]
Once done, repeat the steps for configuring OCFS2. I was successfully able to mount the disk on both machines.
All this problem was apparently caused by not choosing "allocate all disk space now" option while creating the disk to be used for OCFS2.
If you still have any questions or problem, email me at [email protected] and I'll try to get back to you at my earliest.
    Good luck!

  • HP service guard and RAC or dataguard

HP service guard must use with RAC on HP unix server?
In dataguard how can we use the hp service guard?
    will you pls. clarify.

HP Service guard is a clustering or High availability solution that protects you against hardware failure. Oracle Parallel server, the precursor to RAC, when implemented on HPUX platform required HP Service guard. With RAC, oracle bundles in its own clusterware and service guard is no longer a mandatory prerequisite. If Service Guard is installed oracle clusterware will delegate some of the cluster responsibilities to service guard.
Dataguard on the other hand is a Disaster recovery solution that protects you against site disaster or whole data center outage. With that said it is not uncommon to see dataguard being setup between two servers within same datacenter to protect against hardware failure or for reporting purposes.
How would you use dataguard with service guard? On the production site, you can use service guard for fail over the database between two nodes in case there is a hard ware failure. You can do the same for the DR site also.

  • Replication between 2 node RAC environment and standalone

I would like to find out if we can setup replication between a (2 node) RAC environment and standalone database located at different location. Any help regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for the reply.
Consider for a moment I cannot implement dataguard/stream -- because I believe both involves licensing issue --- now only option left is writing my own code. If I right my own code what are the prerequisites for this and what do I have to keep in (technically)mind before i start implementing this. Any help or any lead would be greatly appreciated.

  • 11.2.0.1 rac startup very slow

    Stack information:
    RDBMS: 11.2.0.1
    OS: AIX 5.3
    Clusterware: 11.2.0.1 Oracle CRS
    Issue:
We have recently upgraded from 10.2.0.4 to 11.2.0.1. Prior to the upgrade, our rac clusters would start in about 5 minutes maximum time. After upgrading to 11.2.0.1, startups take approximately 45 minutes. The way that the CRS daemons start is also very strange. We start CRS on node 1, and it takes about 15 minutes for the daemons to start. After they are started, we start the daemons on node 2. At this time, the daemons on node 1 become unavailable for another 10 minutes. After the daemons on node 1 are back, the same thing happens on node 2 and the daemons are unavailable for 10 minutes. Finally, the cluster is available and runs with no issues. There are no error messages that occur during this slow startup.
I have opened a SR ticket on this with Oracle, but have not made any progress on the issue. I have also found similar issues logged on metalink, but didn't see any workarounds to the issue. I wanted to create a post on this forum to see if anyone has seen issues such as this, and if you are aware of a workaround. Please let me know if you have any information.
    Thank you

I would not think the CRS daemons as the primary culprits - simply "taking time" to start courtesy of some bug or something.
The CRS/OHA daemon has prerequisites. Such as opening the voting and OCR disks. Such as initialising its network end-points on the Interconnect interface. Such as IPC communication between daemons. Etc.
Take the OCR/voting disks prerequisite. The system level devices (LUNs/scsi targets/whatever) need to be created by the relevant kernel driver and these need to accept I/O.
This can only be done after the kernel driver "discovered" the actual devices via the storage fabric layer (HBAs/HCAs/etc).
If ASM is used as storage management layer, the ASM instance need to start and successfully mount these devices first.
The discovery process itself can be quite slow, depending on the fabric layer used. If for example the server crashed, the fabric layer may still have stale device entries for the LUNs for that server - and these need to reset when that server now wants "duplicate entries". Older versions of the SRP protocol (for Infiniband fabric) can be a bit cumbersome and even problematic in this regard.
Now, I'm not saying that the storage or Interconnect layers are the problem - simply that these need to be fully functional in order for CRS to start. And this is where I would start looking in your case to determine whether the prerequisites are met early/fast enough to meet CRS startup expectations.
